There’s a Time for Laughter and a Time for Tears The joys and sorrows of Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Women” were re-lived on the Notre Dame stage May 9, 10, 11 and 12. This play was chosen when the drama department found out that it is a special favorite of Sister Pauline. Then the search for period furniture and centennial dresses was on.

The authentic 1863 setting that resulted provided a backdrop for Notre Dame's little women: Terri Casaccio (J0), Mary Lohmeier (Meg), Colleen Murphy (Amy), and Claudia Casaccio (Beth). Rummel High School provided the entire male cast.

Schneewz'ttchen und die Sieben Zwerge, Grimm Brothers story about snowwhite, was presented at the spring Open House Evening with Ger— man script and colored slides by the German II class. Guests were eighth grade students and their parents who toured the academy.

The dramatization of a German story, Rita's l/l’eihnachtsgeschenk, together with other numbers and Weihnachtslieder (Christmas Carols) was given for the elderly inmates of the Omaha Altenheim at Christmas time.

Another beneficial experience was listening to tapes and recordings. Listening for meaning is rewarded by learning to understand, to speak and to read German, bringing a wealth of new cultural experiences from another language, another people, another land.

Students hoping to visit Germany next summer or so are Pat Steele, whose goal is Vienna for the summer of 1969; and hoping to Visit her grandmother in Frankfurt is Linda Hosek. Lucky girls! Who would not like to enjoy a trip down the Scenic Rhine!

In a joint conspiracy with the prom committee to conceal prom announcement preparation of the little theatre, the French Club scheduled Mardi Gras on the same day, April 1. In record time, the little theatre was re-decorated for the evening. The broom dance (not a last minute clean-up eflort, but a game) provided many laughs. The person left without a partner when the music stops must dance with the broom.

Costume judging was the highlight of the evening.

Funniest costume: Kathy Maynes, a fish. Ever watch a fish drink punch from a cup? Most original costume: Patti Rentschler, Russian Cossack. Patti had trouble looking severe, as her black mustache and eyebrows wouldn’t stay in place. Costume involving the most work: Peggy McNulty, Raggedy Ann. Where did Raggedy Ann learn to dance so well?

It wasn’t paint and brush the first day. Art I students spent the first semester learning to draw heads and objects in perspective. Finally, Sister Alexia was convinced (or was she?) that her students were ready to attempt an oil painting.

First, everyone painted a bouquet of sunflowers.

Next, it was landscapes and various subjects.

Then Sister presented a challenge: portray a word (poverty, slums, temptation, true love) in line and color. The remainder of the third quarter was devoted to painting subjects of the students’ choice. The fourth quarter was devoted to ceramics. The students found that it wasn’t as easy as it looked, and the finished product showed just how well the directions were followed. Ceramics are first shaped by hand, dried, fired, glazed, and fired again. Each student produced a miniature head and a plate of her own design.

In addition to exhibiting their work at school, art students have the opportunity to enter various competitions. Entering drawings in the Brandeis Art exhibit were Connie Kerwin, Eileen Donahue, Terri Johnson, Veronica Milan, and Diane Borcyk.

Notre Dame artists also painted a car at the “Paint-in” held in connection with the KOIL fun fair. The girls were supplied with paints, brushes, and a ’68 Opal Kadet car. Nearly nine hours later their creation was finished. Sore arms, dirty feet and tired muscles were not enough to obscure the fact that they had a good time, even though they did not win.

Through the efforts of Sr. Magdalen, the Atomic Energy Commission agreed to loan Notre Dame Academy sealer equipment used to determine the intensity of radiation. Physics students took advantage of the opportunity to ex— plore the peacetime uses of radioactivity, and based their projects on research in this area.

Students over eighteen were invited to enroll in the civil defense course sponsored by the government, which Sr. Magdalen is qualified to teach. A number of the students’ parents participated in the same course earlier in the year.

In the event of a national emergency, many people qualified to operate monitoring equipment (which determines the amount of radioactivity present) would be needed.

Have you ever seen a model dressed in slacks shrunk a size too small? Or a lovely knit dress stretched to a maxi-length? These were some of the unusual sights used as visual aids in the Maytag Educational Fashion Show. Wanda Triplett, a stafi home economist with the Maytag Company’s Home Service Department, instructed the girls on points and methods to remember when laundering clothes. Each of her rules for clean, bright garments was illustrated by one of six Notre Dame models (all size 10!) wearing an article properly laundered, and improperly laundered.

Thus, the government class sparked student interest in the issues, and the platforms of each presidential candidate. The government students v01unteered to represent the various candidates and carefully researched their platform. In their nominating speeches, they knowledgably presented their candidates point of view. His student supporters broke into Wild cheers. When their ample supplies of confetti ran out, some were seen on hands and knees, gathering more.

gram featured children’s styles, sportswear, all—occasion wear, after-five fashions and coats. All the girls in clothing classes at Notre Dame found that today’s gay fabrics and easy patterns created fun as well as new wardrobes.

The Notre Dame track team includes: Phyllis Swoboda, JoNelle Nelson, Colleen Kelly, Renie Murray, Jeanette Clark, Therese Parys, Colette Sabatka, Bobbie Horihan, and Debbie Hollingsworth.

The physical education classes at Notre Dame this year participated in a wide variety of sports this year: softball, basketball, badminton, gymnastics, archery, tennis, volleyball, flag football, Finnish softball, deck tennis, and track and field events. The girls attended a track meet at Ryan High School and came home with at least one award in every division.

Notre Dame was also represented at Omaha University’s High School Play Day and Modern Dance Workshop.

Other students became adept at bowling and gymnastics. Miss Kenworthy stressed the need for physical fitness.

One of the best kept secrets at Notre Dame this year was the location and date of the Junior—Senior Banquet: Mr. Kelly’s on May 12. The highlight of the banquet was the announcement of the annual “Miss” titles. Amid applause and congratulations, four startled seniors accepted their giftrewards for four years of congeniality, per— sonality, popularity, and activity. Through tears of surprise, Margaret Zadina thanked all for her title, Miss Congeniality. Terri Casaccio, Miss Personality, cried, ”I’m glad I came” as she received her gift. Lori Buglewicz turned her customary blushing red when named Miss Popularity. And Colleen Murphy was declared the Most Active Miss, a title earned by four years of intense participation in curricular and extra-curricular activities.

The Banquet ended on a sentimental note. The seniors were treated to the inauguration of a new tradition: Remember The faculty seems as delighted at Lori Buglewicz’ title, Miss Popularity as she is surprised.

There ’5 a Place for Us “Will all the seniors please assemble in the gym immediately?” Sr. Pauline announced over the public address system at 1:20 April 1. The seniors hurried to the gym, convinced that they were going to the prom announcement party.

Sr. Pauline met them in the gym, and greeting them with “April Fool!” sent them back to their classes. As they left, a group of juniors escorted them to the prom announcement party in the little theatre.

When everyone was seated, the lights were dimmed and spots highlighted the many different countries and scenes depicted to illustrate the theme, “There’s a Place for Us.” The prom princesses were announced: Lori Buglewicz, Marilyn Preiner, Connie Kerwin, Margaret Har— rington, and Carla Goeken. While cake and punch was being served, prom booklets were passed out. Talking, tears and autograph exchange continued until three o’clock. The juniors and seniors left. a bit sad, but still very happy.

Somewhere There’s a Place for Us. . . .

And deep in the hearts of every junior and senior attending the prom, there is the memory of that elegant spot. For one brief, shining moment all were ladies promenading with their Lords.

The clock struck ten, and the royal princesses, Carla Goeken,

Margaret Harrington, Marilyn Preiner, Connie Kerwin and Lori Buglewicz were presented to their court. Then with the fanfare, and excitement befitting her role, former Queen Diane Bonaiuto crowned lovely Marilyn Preiner Queen of Somewhere for 1968.

As the royal musicians, the Leslie Smith Soul Band, played the theme song — There’s a Place for Us, the traditional Queen’s Dance began. A joy, tinged with the sadness of parting from this fleeting moment, filled the hearts of all.

Sister Pauline, We! The freshmen honored Sr. Pauline, Notre Dame’s out-going principal, with a special program on May 14. The freshman chorus opened the program with “To Be Alive,” “Shalom,” and “Easter Song.” Paulette Mitzlafic sang ”On a Clear Day.” She was accompanied by Caryn Poell. The program included a ballet to “It‘s Sunday,” performed by Betsy Deitch and “Ellouise,”

by Mary Murphy. The Concert Choir sang selections from My Fair Lady. As a prayer for the continuance of the Notre Dame Sisters’ work, Mary Jane Hobza sang “Ave Maria.”

Mary Beth Angus presented Sr. Pauline with the proceeds of the program. This money will be used to pay part of Sr. Pauline’s passage to the Notre Dame Sisters’ international meeting in Czechoslovakia.

Senior Motto: It is the Great Beginning May 26, 1968. Just another hot and lazy Sunday?

Not to eighty-seven seniors. For this Sunday was the day of graduation at Notre Dame. To some, this assembly might be the beginning of the end of adolescence, to others, the beginning of adulthood, and to still others, just one more hurdle to jump.

The evening was the culmination of four eventful, memory-filled years. One of the most prominent of these memories was Father Kenney, past retreat master, and currently, by unanimous senior request, commencement speaker. With his warmth and simplicity, Father soon turned the solemn group into a spellbound audience. In an efiort to crystallize the central theme of his address: finding joy in bringing joy to others, Father reminisced about his past experiences. A dying little girl told Father how much the children in her hospital ward missed the “monkey priest.” “Will you take his place, Father,” she asked, handing him the puppet she had made. Unnoticed by many, Father reached into his pocket, and the monkey puppet again brought laughter to everyone, and anostalgic reminder of that past retreat to the seniors.

Following Father’s address, Sister Pauline presented the Class of 1968, and Judge John Murphy, Vice Chairman of the Notre Dame Board of Education conferred the diplomas. All too soon, the recessional began, and graduation was a memory.

Sr. Pauline, Judge Murphy, Father Schorn, and Father Kenney proceed to the stage.

“Lord, make us an instrument of thy peace,” is the prayerful song of the Concert Choir.

The Joy of Love Is Sharing At eleven o’clock on May 24 the student body assembled for the final corporate Mass of the year. The seniors, wearing cap and gown, each carried a rose. In the homily, Father Schorn recalled the accomplishments of the year, spoke of the graduates' future, and announced that he was offering the Mass especially for the seniors. In the offertory procession, the seniors presented their rose as a symbol of all they are and hope to be.

The love and unity experienced at this liturgy together later burst forth in a standing ovation for the seniors as they again took their places at Honors Assembly which followed after lunch.
