Whether Notre Dame’s Concert Choir performs in the magnificent marble and stained-glass structure which is Lincoln’s cathedral or in the tiny, unpretentious chapel of the Omaha Poor Clares, one thing is certain to all who hear them: their song bursts forth from hearts which are terribly glad to be alive and to be singing.

Moreover, this singing group is most versatile. They run the gamut from Faure’s delicate IN PARADISUM to Lerner and Loewe’s exhilarating I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT. With equal aplomb these talented young voices can grapple with the complexities of Poulenc’s LITANIE DE LA VIERGE NOIRE or blend with classical precision in the rendering of Bach’s

JESU, JOY OF MY ENDEAVOR. Moving from classical music to the modern idiom, the Concert Choir once more thrilled its audiences with their ‘Evening on Broadway,’ which has as its special theme, ‘My Name Is

Barbra’ (Streisand, that is!).

Notre Dame has presented the two faces of drama this year. The face of comedy was presented by ‘Our Hearts Were Young and Gay’, while the more serious side was shown in ‘The Heiress’. This is the story of a young girl who is destroyed because her father does not love her. Mary Lohmeier and Mark Daly portrayed the father-daughter team which was really not a family since it lacked love. Catherine Sloper’s Aunt Penniman (Kathy Jones) tried to help her learn to love unsuccessfully until Morris Townsend (Chris Crotty) entered her life. Catherine naively failed to realize that Morris was really after her money. Dr. Sloper was less naive, however, and he threatened to disinherit his daughter if she married Morris. He jilted her, and over the years her bitterness increased. A more mature andpeni— tent Morris returned two years later after Dr. Sloper’s death, but this time the cynical Catherine rejected him completely.

The cast gave a superb performance, drawing the audience into the tension. The crew created a setting so realistic that it was hard to believe it was not an actual home.

If you want a well-rounded schedule as well as a lifetime education, take foods’ class. It is really different . . . it’s enjoyable! Where else in this fast world does a girl get a chance to sit down to learn the cultural skills of craftsmen and the charm and grace of etiquette? Many of the studies in home ec classes involve outside research. But this shouldn’t scare anyone. It provides personal enrichment and promotes initiative and imagination.

“Chateaubriand” . . .“a laKing” .. . and “maitre de”. . . Sounds like French? How aboutfoods? Rightl Among the varied and interesting lessons was the study of unfamiliar food terms often used on menus.

King Louis XV, Queen Anne, Chippendale and Hepplewhite will never be forgotten. They have made their imprint in comfortable living and design and the girls can vouch for it. They are able to name the

classical styles these men represent in the furniture sold in downtown stores.

“Eat, drink, but be careful.” Here, correct table setting and dining manners are learned as well as social etiquette. More important than this, however, is the understanding of nutritive value of foods and the method of preparing delectable meals.

The highlight of activities in the foods’ class this year was by far the Centennial Breakfast. The Old West was featured by a display of antiques and waitresses who wore costumes of the era.

Sister Mary Beth has not only taught the culinary arts to her students, but she has made them feel that they have progressed from mere amateurs to real experts!

German Club Brings Touch of

the Rhineland to the Elderly

Wiedersehen’ are expressions that come

with map study, if you, like the members of

the German Club, dream of atrip to Germany.

Thus it is for Linda Hosek who dreams of visiting her grandmother in Frankfurt-amMain some day; and for Sandy Schwietz to see ‘die Schweiz’, or Switzerland. Still others yearn for a cruise along the Rhine. Sister Gabriel’s preference would probably be south— ern Germany and the Alpland.

Not satisfied with only dreams, however, the German students use their skill in more concrete ways. At Christmas time, cheerful greetings of ‘Frohlicke Weihnachtenl’ re— sounded at the Altenheim, the German Old People’s Home. The girls entertained with a Christmas program and home—baked cookies and sweets. A similar program was given in March with an Easter theme.

All in all, German can be funl And useful too, since it is spoken in all the countries of Europe. Even if you never have the chanceto take that European tour, you can have a great time in German Club.

Jove, Mount Olympus Has Moved to State Street!

Notre Dame for the first time hosted the annual meeting of Nebraska’s Junior Classical League. This convention brings together Latin students who reaffirm the value of our Roman heritage through many interesting and challenging activities. One of the events of the day was the Olympics, highlighted by the chariot races. Creative seamstresses made and modelled costumes, and the intellectually—gifted students competed in contests in derivatives, vocabulary, mythology, grammar, and Roman life.

A mixer brought the Latin Lovers back to the present day with a combo and cokes making a perfect ending to an already exciting day.

“Hey, get off my foot!” . . .

“Get your elbow out of my face . . .” These and simi— lar exclamations issued from the freshmen as they strove energetically to win the tug-of—war at Notre Dame Academy’s first Field Day held at Miller Park.

The day began bright and early when the entire student body assembled at the park. The morning’s activities were limited to competitions among each class. The seniors chose to have a soft-ball tourna— ment; the juniors competed in jumps and relays; the sophomores had gunny-sack races and played kickthe-shoe; and the freshmen held a volley-ball tournament.

Lunch provided a welcome break in the morning’s feverish activity as 390 girls settled down to a picnic complete with ice cream and pop.

In the afternoon the girls assembled on the green to watch the winning teams from each class compete against each other. The triumphant victors of the day were none other than the FRESHMENI

Notre Dame Girls Dance to the Sounds of Music ‘Excitement’ was the word on January 31. The juniors and seniors both felt it, and they were waiting for something to break the suspense.

Finally, Sister Pauline assembled the seniors in the gym. Within minutes, the stage curtain open— ed and two wind-up dolls by the names of Nancy Johnson and Colleen Murphy appeared. Barb Daley wound them up and they spoke, armouncing that the PA had arrived.

At the Birchwood Club the theme of the Sounds of Music was announced through a trip around the world. Lynne Goracke was placed in aFrench cafe with ‘Where Is Your Heart?’. On a carousel was Maryalyce Petsche with ‘If I Loved You’.

In Russia, Diane Bonaiuto thrilled to the song, ‘Somewhere My Love’. Diane Bash became a Japanese beauty as she listened to ‘You Are Beautiful’. Finally, back in America, Colleen Witzke heard ‘April Love’. On April 28 one of these girls would be crowned queen!

Those three months sped by quickly, and on that windy April evening nearly two hundred couples came to the Livestock Exchange Build— ing for an evening of fun and dancing.

Father Schwertly had the honor of being Master of Ceremonies. After his welcome, the grand march was started by the juniors and the seniors followed. Then the moment arrived that all had so eagerly awaited: Diane Bonaiuto was crowned as Notre Dame’s 1967 Prom Queen.

Peacock blue, forest green, and burnished gold are the color motif of the Plazzo Italiano’s huge formal dining room where, for the first time, Notre Dame Academy’s Junior-Senior Banquet was held.

Upon arriving at the Plazzo, the juniors and seniors greeted each other and then proceeded to the tables reserved for them. Italian dishes vied with sizzling steaks to capture each girl’s attention.

When the meal was over, the last one that many of the girls would be eating together, Diane Bash read the senior’s will. The older girls gave to their junior friends all manner of things, including a choice seat in Sister Ruth’s impossible senior English class for the

year of 1967-1968.

The banquet ended at 7:00. The juniors look forward to it again next year while the seniors have but one more lovely memory to addto the events of their final year.

The student body honors Our Lady during a corporate Mass. —Callaway Studios.

JOY IS HER NAME Wisps of cloud drifted in an azure sky, rainbow-hued dresses dotted the spacious lawn, and the scent of roses filled the warm morning air as the students of Notre Dame Academy assembled for their annual tribute to Our Lady, the May Crowning.

1967 ’s crowning brought Mary more clear1y into the teenage world through the use of slides depicting the modern woman in

her many moods. After the showing of the slides which highlighted for each girl the femininity of Mary, the students gathered before her shrine on the campus lawn. The Mass was the focal point of the May Crown— ing, and it was at the offertory that Janet Gunia placed her crown on Our Lady’s head and each senior presented to Mary one red rose.

The solemn strains of POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE echoed through Notre Dame’s gymnasium as 92 white-robed seniors filed in under the loving gaze of proud and happy

parents and friends.

The highlight of the graduation ceremony was Father Schorn’s address, filled with optimistic vision and nostalgic memories.

As he reviewed the seniors’ questions about life’s purpose and meaning, he re-emphasized the goals and guidelines that he had once given them for their future life.

At the conclusion of the ceremony Sister

Loyola, provincial superior, conferred the diplomas on the graduates. After the recessional, the girls formed a receiving line around the gym where they were congratulat-

ed, hugged, and kissed by their teachers, family, and friends.

As the evening came to an end, the seniors discovered for themselves one of life’s para— doxes: all things become dearer when we

must leave them.

Dear Jeannie, the old clock on the wall says it is time to move to greener pastures.

For us, those greener pastures will be college and a life somewhat alien to us. As the years go by, our high school days will be some of our best memories. They will provide us with a few reminiscent moments and our children with a few good laughs.

It seems like only last September that we were "green” freshmen. Awkward, uncertain, giddy, and feeling like we owned the world because we were in high school. Now we are seniors. A little less awkward, a little less uncertain, a little less giddy, a little older and wiser, and still feeling like we own the world.

In a few short days the world will open its arms to us and encumber us in the "rat-race” of humanity. No longer will we be silly high school girls, then we will be young women ofthe world who will be judged on our own merits and not on the merits that are ours as a claSS or as part of the school. Then we will be on our own. It is up to us, Shorty, to make what we will of ourselves and for ourselves. What the world holds for you and what it holds for me is likely to be two different occupations entirely, but whatever it is, it is up to you and me to make the best of it and make it work.

No matter what you do, Jeannie, or where life takes you, I ask you to remember your high school days and to remember me. But most of all I want you to remember that you still own the world.
