MUSICAL BINGO PT2 After the success of the first Musical Bingo session, we brought it back for round two, and the youth were just as excited to play. What makes Musical Bingo especially fun is that the youth help curate the playlist themselves, giving them ownership over the music they hear while turning familiar songs into an interactive game. Everyone walked away a winner, but the bigger win was seeing how an activity outside of traditional studio sessions can keep youth engaged with music in a completely different way.

BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE LIVE COVER Tiffany continues to prove that she is one of the studio’s most promising young musicians. Already known around the studio for her ability to pick up rhythms quickly, she took on the drums for this live cover of “Blame It on the Boogie” and showed exactly why she has earned her reputation as a drum protege. Her natural sense of timing, ability to follow the groove, and willingness to challenge herself make her progress especially exciting to watch. With continued practice and encouragement, Tiffany has the potential to become an incredibly strong drummer.

SONGWRITIG 101 Mason has always been one of the studio’s strongest young artists on the microphone, especially when it comes to freestyling. This school year, however, he decided to challenge himself in a different way: becoming more intentional with his writing. Instead of relying solely on improvisation, Mason has been putting more time into developing quality lyrics and making sure that what he says on the microphone has meaning behind it. He still knows how to freestyle when the moment calls for it, but now he is also willing to sit down with a pen and paper and really work through his ideas.

EP SESSION #3 The Amani Montessori girls continue to make steady progress on their first EP, meeting every Wednesday to develop their project one step at a time. After successfully completing their first song, the group has already begun writing their second, giving them a strong foundation to build from when they return from fall break. What makes this project especially exciting is that they are not simply recording songs they are learning the entire creative process, from developing ideas and writing lyrics to recording and shaping a project together.

MIX ROOM LISTENING SESSION Toward the end of the month, the mix room became a space for the youth to do more than simply listen to music they began listening like artists and collaborators. Youth gathered around finished and in-progress songs, discussing what worked, what could be improved, and who else might contribute to an unfinished track. These sessions have become a great opportunity for them to practice giving honest, constructive feedback while also learning how to receive it.
