fun session recently where I challenged our youth to use what I’ve taught them so far to run a session completely by themselves. Once our young rappers get some lyrics written down, we are going to transform Daniel’s beats into full-blown songs. The instrumental Daniel cooked up is attached, give it a listen!
They discovered ways to create and connect different sections, and weave different sounding sections into each other in order to make a beat with more variety. I’ve been pairing up a lot of the summer camp kids to learn how to make beats together, and their competitive spirits are coming out as they try to one up each other’s creations. The stars really aligned one day when I led a songwriting session with our new summer camp youth. Caitlin and Zuri created our beat, then Chassidy and I got a piece of paper to brainstorm some words for our hook. I came up with the first line, “yea i’m from the Bronx”, and that was all she needed. She took the theme and ran with it like crazy. 30 minutes later and we had the beginnings of a hit! Chauncey and Heila have shown immense growth and progress over the course of our daily producer hour lessons! They are learning how to count all the beats of a measure, and how to use the metronome to understand and contextualize the drums. Click the linktoheartheirlatestcreation!
Jason and I led a collaboration amongst our new summer camp kids where we gave each of them roles to carry out for our new track. We had Caitlin and Chassidy learn how to act as producer and assistant producer, taking the creative lead making the beat for our artists to sing on. Then we assigned Heila and Zuri the roles of artist and writer, challenging them to come up with the vocal melody to record over the track. This team of youth was focused and efficient, and will be reconvening next week to finish recording our new track!
