BACK IN THE STRINGS AND THINGS Starting the new semester, Gigi is back teaching younger youth guitar from the ground up. Every Tuesday at 4 PM, youth gather with Gigi to learn the fundamentals of guitar, practice new chords, and build their confidence as musicians. Recently, the group has taken their learning further by recording their guitar progress and creating original sounds for the Beatmakers to sample and incorporate into their productions. This collaboration gives the youth an opportunity to see how their skills can contribute to the creative process beyond the classroom.
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE One particular youth, Josh, has been especially interested in learning guitar since Gigi began teaching at our location. Last week, Gigi hosted a mini guitar competition with fellow youth Ruby and Michael, giving them an opportunity to put their skills to the test after a month of practice. Throughout the month, they worked on developing their rhythm with a metronome, improving their chord transitions, and building finger strength and coordination. For their final assignment, the youth competed against one another for the chance to record and showcase the skills they had worked so hard to develop over the past month.
ON THE RECORD Josh ended up taking home the win! As the competition’s winner, Josh will now have the opportunity to record guitar for the very first time in Logic Pro, turning the skills he has developed over the past month into an original recording. In the next phase of the project, a Youth Beatmaker will sample Josh’s guitar recording and build it into a beat, while a Youth Vocalist will add vocals to bring the song together. Once complete, the finished track will be uploaded to the Notes For Notes SoundCloud. Be on the lookout for Josh’s song coming soon!
