TIPS • Planting the tree in a large pot and let it grow by one or two years to increase the thickness of its trunk.

True life story: A story to remember

By Elba M. Perez Isidro “Suddenly, I knew it was a story to remember”.

Elba M. Pérez is my name and at my fourteen years I was expecting to live an exciting experience.

At that time, I was planning to travel to London and participate in the British English Olympics, better known as BEO, in England. It was a trip organized in England. The English committee of BEO selected the best schools in México in the subject of English.

I was studying in the Active School Jean Piaget, and it was selected by BEO to represent Tabasco. In this trip nineteen partners and I decide to live the adventure. But I had a problem. I had to give a speech about the climate change politics in

Cuba. And it had to be totally in English in front a huge auditory. - No way! - I thought.

One of my biggest fears is talking in front of a lot of people, but I realized I had to face it. So, three partners and I need to know more and we practice everyday. To be familiar with this topic we had an interview with a Cuban professor, she was a young adult that recently had entered as a professor in my school.

Finally, her information and also an investigation we did was enough to complete the speech.

Then we were ready, and we gave two discourses.

It was very regretting knowing that I was able to face one my fears.

True life story: A graft By: Kristell Vargas Rodriguez Nine years ago, When I was studying the high school in the 2007 year. I had the opportunity to take a workshop. The workshop that I choose was agricultural. I was excited because I liked the ecology and the trees. Time later I had to do a project. The project it was to make a graft. It was to be born a tree within another tree. Was amazing. I believed that was a hard work. The teacher explained in the class how to do step by step. I needed land, sawdust and water in a bag. I had to peel a little part of a branch. I also had to wrap it part of the branch with the bag. The process was long. I was nervious, had to with a month to see the result. The time passed and I was a afraid that my graft not result. The teacher told me that I made a great job, but I don’t believed that. Before

I planted a tree and died, so I distrusted much. Finally the expected day has come, and which was my surprise to see how the graft had given great results. I could replant the graft. I plant my tree , and in the months that I had in the school I could see it grow and become a beautiful tree. I was happy and I realized that fail once means always be equal, and that if you trust yourself you can do it

Ocean currents push phytoplankton, and pollution, around the globe faster than thought °Ocean currents can carry objects to almost any place on the globe in less than a decade, faster than previously thought.

The billions of single-celled marine organisms known as phytoplankton can drift from one region of the world’s oceans to almost any other place on the globe in less than a decade, Princeton University researchers have found.

Unfortunately, the same principle can apply to plastic debris, radioactive particles and virtually any other human-made flotsam and jetsam that litter our seas, the researchers found. Pollution can thus become a problem far from where it originated within just a few years.

The finding that objects can move around the globe in just 10 years suggests that ocean biodiversity may be more resilient to climate change than previously thought, according to a study published this week in the journal Nature Communications. Phytoplankton form the basis of the marine food chain, and their rapid spread could enable them to quickly repopulate areas where warming seas or ocean acidification have decimated them.

“Our study shows that the ocean is quite efficient in moving things around,” said Bror Fredrik Jönsson, an associate research scholar in Princeton’s Department of Geosciences, who conducted the study with co-author James R. Watson, a former Princeton postdoctoral researcher who is now a researcher at Stockholm University.

“This comes as a surprise to a lot of people, and in fact we spent about two years confirming this work to make sure we got it right,” Jönsson said.One of the strengths of the model is its approach of following phytoplankton wherever they go throughout the world rather than focusing on their behavior in one region, Jönsson said. Because most marine organisms are mobile, this particle-tracking approach can yield new insights compared to the approach of studying one area of ocean.

The resulting model works for objects that have no ability to control their movement such as phyto-

plankton, bacteria and human-made debris. Organisms that can control their movement even a small amount -- such as zooplankton, which can control their vertical position in water -- are not accounted for in the model. Nor does the model apply to objects such as boats that protrude above the water and can be pushed by surface winds.

The team applied a computer algorithm to calculate the fastest route an object can travel via ocean currents between various points on the globe.

Most previous studies looked only at movement of phytoplankton within regions. The resulting database, Jönsson said, is analogous to a mileage chart one would find on a roadmap or atlas showing the distance between two cities, except that Jönsson and Watson are indicating the speed of travel between different points.

The researchers confirmed that the travel times calculated by their model were similar to the time it took real objects accidentally dumped into the ocean to be carried by currents. For instance, 29,000 rubber ducks and other plastic bath toys toppled off a Chinese freighter in 1992 and have since been tracked as a method of understanding ocean currents. A similar utility has stemmed from the “Great Shoe Spill of 1990” when more than 60,000 Nike athletic shoes plunged into the ocean near Alaska and have been riding the currents off the Pacific Northwest ever since. The researchers’ model also matched the amount of time it took radioactive particles to reach the West Coast of the United States from Japan’s Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, which released large amounts of radioactive materials into the Pacific Ocean following heavy damage from a tsunami in March 2011. The actual travel time of the materials was 3.6 years; the model calculated it would take 3.5 years.

I started this initiative as a platform where youth instead of idling in the shopping centre, can come and discuss life transforming ideas. It was just a way of motivating the young people not to lose hope,” says Makokha. With time and using his savings and funds from donors, Makokha, fined tuned the idea and it became an empowerment centre which has transformed formerly hopeless youth into serious agriprenuers.

The group comprises youth aged between 16 and 36 years, majority of whom are graduates. “We welcome any young person ready to learn and be challenged,” says Makokha, who used to work in the former Prime Minister’s office under a docket that deals with youth.
