Olive Owl

What a hoot!

Barry Tranter Emma Tranter

Owls can be found in almost every country in the world.

There are about 200 different types of owl. Olive is a barn owl.

Female barn owls have spotty chests.

Meet Olive. Olive is an owl. Here she is sitting on a branch. She loves being high up in the treetops.

Barn owls like Olive have fat, heart-shaped faces.

Hello, I’m Olive.

Nice to meet you!

Barn owls make loud screeching noises.

During the daytime, Olive stays fast asleep . . .

Most owls sleep standing up.

. . .

Animals that sleep in the day and come out at night are nocturnal.

Zzzzzz
. . . but when evening comes, she wakes up and takes a good look around. She has a busy night ahead of her!

Time to get up!

Owls can’t move their eyes, so they turn their heads to look around them.

An owl can swivel its head nearly all the way around – it can even look straight behind its back!

Like most birds, Olive gets around by fying. But Olive has a secret . . .

Owls have special soft, fuffy feathers so they can fy very quietly.

Ssssshhhhhh!

Owls even have feathery toes!

She is almost completely silent when she fies. This means she can sneak up on her dinner!

A barn owl’s open wings are wider than a fve-year-old’s outstretched arms.

Whilst fying, owls can hover just above the ground.
