Nosy Crow is a new independent company, creating and publishing children’s books and apps. This little brochure’s about the 27 books – our first – that we’ll be publishing in 2011 (if you want to know about our apps, please ask for our apps brochure). These range from touch-and-feel board books for tiny babies to ‘romantasy’ novels for pre-teens. We’re publishing debut writers and illustrators, and more established creative talents, like Axel Scheffler and Penny Dale. We’re a team with decades of experience between us: Kate Wilson, Camilla Reid, Kate Burns and Stephanie Amster have all held senior positions at Macmillan Children’s Books, Scholastic UK, Orchard, Walker Books, Kingfisher and HarperCollins. We’re enjoying bringing our skills and professionalism to a different kind of environment: smaller-scale, personal, responsive… and fun! All of us are parents, and we bring that experience to our publishing decisions too: we have a clear sense of the potential reader for every book we publish. We also recognise the importance of appealing to parents, given that very few books are bought by children for themselves.

Dinosaur Dig! has everything that gets small boys excited – diggers, dinosaurs and dirt plus a bit of counting thrown in for good measure. Bursting with energy and noise and with a splashy, surprising ending, this is an absolute riot of a book.
Mr and Mrs Deer would love to have a baby, and one day they find a little antlered bundle on the doorstep. Mrs Deer thinks their wish has come true; Mr Deer thinks that baby is very, very peculiar.
The baby won’t stop roaring so they ask advice from friends and family, who – in turn – send them off to fetch what they think the baby needs. But – how very, very peculiar – each time Mr and Mrs Deer return home from an errand, someone has gone missing and the the baby is still roaring. It takes wise old Granny Bear to spot the problem. That baby’s not a baby – it’s a little monster. A very greedy little monster at that...

If your granny were a little bit, well, different from other grannies, would you want to change her… or would you end up thinking you love her just the way she is? In this rhyming text, a little girl whose granny is (whisper it) a witch, gets fed up with dealing with the problems she creates, so she tries to reform her, but a reformed granny is bored and boring, and maybe it’s more fun to cook up a big pot of gloopy soup with granny’s witchy friends after all.

One snowy Christmas eve, the king buys some soft red cloth to make a cloak for the princess – little does he know that the left-over cloth will be used to make presents for many more of the kingdom’s inhabitants, right down to the last teeny bit of cloth made into a scarf that is just right for the smallest mouse to protect him from the winter chill. Rhythmical writing and energetic, charming illustrations bring to life this lovely story with the perfect Christmas message that giving presents to your loved ones is just as much fun as receiving.
