New Titles and Complete Catalogue 2020

2020 is set to be an exciting year for us in the Crow’s Nest. Winning Children’s Publisher of the Year at the 2019 British Book Awards has set the bar high for the coming year, but we’re certain that you’ll find lots of books to get excited about inside our new catalogue.
On our cover you might recognise two familiar faces: the mischievous duo from Ross Collins’ CILIP Amnesty award-winner, There’s a Bear on My Chair, return for more hilarity in There’s a Mouse in My House (p.115). In fact, our picture book list is full of treats from new and established authors and illustrators.

We welcome back Axel Scheffler’s much-loved Pip and Posy for a brand-new tale about toddler life in The Friendly Snail (p.59). Prize-winning Pamela Butchart and Kate Hindley join forces in the beautiful, funny and reassuring picture book Jeremy Worried About the Wind (p.98). Look out for a Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam festive special in Santa’s Stolen Sleigh (p.116) as well as a lyrical picture book with a powerful message published with the National Trust, The Wide, Wide Sea (p.77) by Anna Wilson and Jenny Løvlie.
We’re also so delighted to be publishing Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright! An Animal Poem for Every Day of the Year (p.96), inspired by the success of our 2018 nature poetry collection, I Am the Seed that Grew the Tree, which won the Waterstones Children’s Gift of the Year in 2018. It’s an exquisite collection of poems to share and treasure, chosen by Fiona Waters, but this time beautifully illustrated by the acclaimed Britta Teckentrup.
Swedish designer Ingela Arrhenius’ Felt Flaps series has proven a hit since its launch in 2017, with over 2 million copies sold worldwide, and you’ll spot lots of colourful new additions to the series in 2020: Where’s Baby Chick, Where’s Mrs Queen, Where’s Mr Pirate, Where’s Mrs T-Rex and Where’s Mrs Tiger (p.135). We’re also publishing a stylish new brilliantly interactive board series from Ingela that launches in June with Peekaboo Sun and Peekaboo Cow (p.55).
In July, the Olympics will be kicking off in Tokyo and we have the ultimate sporting companion: On Your Marks, Get Set, Gold! (p.49). Our non-fiction list covers a fascinating range of subjects, from an inspiring look at young people who’ve shaped our world in YouthQuake (p.103), through Building a Home (p.26), a unique picture book about construction, to learning about the human body in The Body Book (p.62) – which is complete with see-through acetate pages!
There is something for everyone in our fiction list: from taking your first steps as an independent reader with our hilarious heroine Magnificent Mabel (p.19) to getting lost in the jungle in Nizrana Farook’s amazing debut for 9+, The Girl Who Stole an Elephant (p.10). You’ll find brilliant new fiction from Fleur Hitchcock (p.68), Kirsty Applebaum (p.43), Catherine Bruton (p.54), S. E. Durrant (p.31) and Sally Nicholls (p.124). We’re also publishing the perfect gift book for all occasions, Writes of Passage: 100 Things to Read Before You Turn 13 (p.51), a powerful collection of words that matter, expertly curated by Nicolette Jones, the children’s book critic for The Sunday Times.
Our aim, as ever, is to produce high quality books that all children can enjoy – and we hope you’ll delight in exploring and sharing the bountiful range of books in this catalogue.

The next book in an action-packed adventure series for younger readers, with echoes of Enid Blyton. Perfect holiday reading!

For Aiden, Chloe, Ava and Josh, holidays at their grandparents’ cottage mean wild beaches, no curfew, Bella the dog, and most of all – adventure!
While sailing their boat around the coast, Chloe sees a terrified face at a tower window on Thorn Island. Could the face belong to recently kidnapped young George, the only child of a rich local businessman? Certain that the villains are hiding out nearby, the cousins must use all their skills and cunning to conduct a daring rescue.

‘Full of plot, action and freedom, with not a screen in sight.’

Magnificent Mabel and the Christmas Elf
Ruth Quayle • Illustrated by Julia Christians
Introducing a truly hilarious and one-of-a-kind new character: Magnificent Mabel!
Perfect for early readers, each book has three stories filled with perfectly-observed, child-friendly humour, highly relatable themes and stylish illustrations.
Sometimes life isn’t fair for Mabel Chase. Like for instance a naughty Christmas Elf gets her in LOTS of trouble. And the new boy in her class at school REFUSES to be her friend. And no-one lets her look after her little cousin, even though she is BRILLIANT with babies. But none of that matters in the end . . . because Mabel is still MAGNIFICENT!

Find out what reading level our books are using the key below from Lilac (lowest) to Dark Red (highest band).
We don’t acquire or commission or edit our books to take into account book banding, and not all of our books, it turns out, can be formally banded. Where the books have been banded, the bands given reflect an independent expert’s view of how these books best fit the widely used colour banding levels for KS1 (Lilac to Lime) and the extended popular KS2 book bands (Brown to Dark Red).
