Improved Transportation Infrastructure

A public space for residents to grow plants and promote the growth of local wildlife.

Mycelium can spread wildly throughout the area to speed up the tree’s growth and sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Gas holder as a local renewable energy power plant. The housing area, educational facilities, clinics, supermarkets, schools, and many other things will all be powered by electricity. Carbon filtration mechanism is installed to capture the carbon in the atmosphere

Affordable Passivhaus housing is provided for better thermal comfort, indoor air quality, and self-maintained moisture and humidity level. Homes built according to Passivhaus standards which feature more space and daylighting, enable users to reduce the consumption of electricity

Collaboration with the chief of Manchester Council to remodel the terrain for a better bicycle and pedestrian path would help to encourage the public to use public transportation thus increase the local biodiversity

Photography Series: Identification of Characters and their Activity through Human Eyes Our aim to understand both human and non-human daily activities and engagement with the site context before we start to explore our thesis project. This help us to establish the site scene and wider landscape scenario for EmPowering Bradford site and to convey crucial messages through different experimental mediums.

Mediums explored consist of site context photography through human eyes, Mycelium and electrical network entanglement animation, wetland restoration drawings and physical sectional model.

Photography Series: Weaving human and non-human actors

Human actors from the site are characterized to become non-human, in this context as mushrooms to reflect Mycelium used through out this project and weave the characters into the landscape.

This will show how the characters are placed within the site, utilising the amenities provided and entaglement with their surrounding as shown through drawing as a medium.

Animation: Empowering Bradford through Mycelium & Electrical Network Entanglement

‘A Journey Through the Past, Present and Post- Tropicality’ by Tan (2022) was the original inspiration for creating an animation to inform our audience of our project. This video inspired us to couple our own animation with various sounds to create a more immersive experience for the viewer.

Drawing: Wetland Restoration

Peter Cook, the founder of Archigram, inspired us through his use of abstract drawings to convey messages to his audience. Archigram was an experimental collective of architects that became famous for its radical architecture concepts in the 1960s and 1970s.

immediately attract our attention through their geometries, playful use of colour, abstraction and clear conveyance of nature as part of the design. These complex drawings allow the viewer to establish their own understanding of a project to a large extent.

“We were reading space comics and we were influenced by Buckminster Fuller” - Peter Cook.

What is poignant is the atmospheric qualities of each of the drawings. The audience receives a sense of the the overarching aim of these projects through emotive means, which is one of the aims of our drawings: to create an emotional response.

Based on the substrate inoculation test results, we decided to use a coffee and sawdust mixture as this was fast growing, had good Mycelium coverage, was mostly solid, and produced an earthy tone which will be good at representing the ground below the site.

professional studies 2 // first year project Algae-rhythm

De-Carbonization plan is introduced in response to UN Climate Change (COP26) which aims to achieve 2030 emission reductions of reaching net-zero carbon by the middle of the century.

2m² of algae is believed to be equivalent to one tree which can absorb 22kg of carbon dioxide per year. Therefore, this is an invitation for the community in Stockport to integrate Algae into the development of the existing Merseyway Shopping Mall.

50-year-old sustainable plan is proposed to rewild the Earth with Algae infused photobioreactor as part of a sustainable lifestyle.

To achieve a green and environmentally safe space for the Stockport community to socialize, the Algae photobioreactor is injected as part of the retrofit building façade to sequester carbon dioxide in the air and more oxygen is released from the facade. This helps to transform the non-living concrete building into a breathable Algae-infused building.

A number of programs are introduced throughout the building such as the production of Algae infused tiles, worm food (compostable cloth), carbon-storing ink material and spirulina.

This helps to exercise the community’s use of Algae in their daily life and actively engage with the environment.
