Huge Turnout for Jamie’s Game 2

It was goals galore at a sunny Carrow Road on Sunday 25th May for the Community Sports Foundation (CSF)’s Sporting Light Appeal fundraising showpiece of the year, Jamie’s Game 2.

A crowd of over 9,500 fans were on hand to witness the excitement as the two teams of film, TV, sport and music stars descended on Norwich for the afternoon. (cont. p2)

Coastal Walk Challenge 70 brave walkers overcame fatigue, blisters and cramps in the fourth annual, Coastal Walk Challenge, sponsored

by Riverside Leisure Centre, to raise money for Sporting Light Appeal.

On Friday 13th June, the team set off from Hunstanton Bandstand along the Norfolk Coast Path and 24 hours later, ended at the finish line at Cromer Pier, 47 miles away from their starting point.

THE STARS DESCEND AGAIN

(cont.) An action-packed game saw

ITV2’s The Only Way is Essex star Dan Osborne’s team beat actor Danny Dyer’s team 14-9.

The annual celebrity match, originally named after CSF ambassador Jamie Abbott, was founded in order to raise funds and awareness for the Community Sports Foundation and this year’s crowd was even bigger than the year before.

Jake Wood and David Witts, whilst Darren Huckerby and Leon McKenzie led the scoring from the ex-Norwich City contingent.

Other stars at the game included twins Oliver and James Phelps, both sporting 9 3/4 on their shirts in homage to their Harry Potter acting roles, Scott Robinson from boyband 5ive, X-Factor contestant Ray Quinn, as well as Hunger Games 2 star Sam Claflin.

Former Canary Darren Eadie, whose company Sellebrity helped organised the event, said:

“It’s always nice to come back on the hallowed turf and to have the opportunity to raise money and awareness for such a great charity.”

CSF disability participants Emil Roger and Rosie Hodgson, two young people who have benefited from the support of CSF and the Sporting Light Appeal, were on hand to lead the two teams out and take on the roles of managers for the day.

It wasn’t just about football however – prior to the match, X-Factor winner Shayne Ward delighted the crowd by joining in with the Rock Choir’s rendition of Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are”.

Half-time entertainment was provided

by West End star Rob Houchen who sang a rousing version of “The People’s Song” from Les Misérables supported by the Norfolk & Norwich Operatic Society, as CSF Disability groups demonstrated their football skills on the pitch.

Match sponsor Aviva’s Man of the Match Dan Osborne said:

“There was such a buzz here. When you’re supporting disabled sports as well, there’s nothing better.”

The champagne came out following the final whistle as the winning team paraded the trophy, signed autographs and posed for photos with delighted fans.

All money raised from the game will help disabled and disadvantaged people across Norfolk enjoy the benefits of sport.

Coastal Walk Challenge (cont.) The largest team yet to compete in the Coastal Walk Challenge conquered sand, mud, boardwalk, road and the dreaded shingle banks of Cley and Beeston Bump.

Esme Gallagher, one of the Coastal Challenge Fundraisers, added:

“This is the hardest challenge I have ever completed. There were times when I wanted to give up but having the rest of the group there to support me, I managed to complete it.”

Each fundraiser had to raise a minimum of £150 and thanks to the dedication and effort shown by the team, the 2014 Coastal Walk Challenge managed to raise an incredible £22,378 for the Sporting Light Appeal.

“The response we had this year to take part was incredible and the largest group yet!” explained Emma Fletcher, CSF Fundraising Officer,

“This is no easy challenge and you could see the sense of achievement on their faces when they arrived in Cromer and realised what they had actually done.”

We would like to give a special thanks to Sainsbury’s Longwater and The Grove, Cromer who donated food to the hikers after they had finished the challenge plus platinum business champions Cafe2u who provided hot drinks en-route.

Sporting Light Appeal at summer events

North Walsham rocks for Sporting Light!

A sell-out crowd attended the charity Live Aid event at North Walsham Community Centre on Saturday 19th April.

The Sporting Light Appeal raised over £2500 at two events this Summer.

On the first weekend of July, over £2212.36 was raised at the CSF’s Summer Cup, a weekend festival of football for child teams across Norfolk.

At the Royal Norfolk Show, on 25th26th June, the Sporting Light Appeal stand raised an additional £406.29 for the charity.

A memorable night included live music from local bands and a charity auction – from which an incredible £10,000 was raised in aid of Sporting Light Appeal.

Items auctioned included a Gibson J35 Acoustic Guitar signed by rock legend Rod Stewart and a season ticket to Norwich City for the 2014/15 season.

North Walsham Live Aid was founded in 1985 by organiser Barry Holden following the success of the Wembley event – and this year’s fundraising total was the biggest yet.

Barry explained the importance of raising money for children charities:

“I have two children and three grandchildren of my own which fuels my belief that children’s charities are the most important of all.”

“The fantastic response from the local community for each event and being able to help children in so many different ways is what spurs me on.”

Barry Holden’s nephew Connor Kerry presented a cheque to the Sporting Light Appeal during half-time at Jamie’s Game 2.

Sporting Light funds support new disability Soccer Centres Gemma Newson (centre) at taster session

“Attending Community Sports Foundation sessions when I was growing up helped build up my confidence to go and play at an international level.

These sessions are so important because it helps children to get involved with other deaf children, have a bit of fun, practise football, build up their confidence and make lots of good friends.”

Funding raised from the Sporting Light Appeal is being used to launch two new exciting disability Soccer Skill Centres this autumn.

The Cerebral Palsy and Hearing Impairment Soccer Skill Centres will cater for both children and adults and give participants the chance to play football against players with similar disabilities.

Both the Skill Centres will take place at the Community Sports Foundation’s Carrow Park facility and will cost the participants just £1 per week.

Supported by Norfolk County Council, the sessions are designed to improve footballing skills whilst strengthening social skills such as self-esteem and confidence.

Emil Roger, CSF pan-disability coach and participant, said: “These

players aren’t really involved in mainstream football, so these sessions really help. It builds everyone’s confidence and benefits them socially.”

The two new sessions will sit alongside CSF’s two existing disability Soccer Skill Centres Pan-Disability and Down’s Syndrome – both of which receive support from the Sporting Light Appeal.

New for 2014, Canary Club will offer the chance for disabled young people to participate in sports, activities and fun games whilst socialising in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Jointly funded by Norfolk County Council and the Sporting Light Appeal, the sessions will use both Carrow Park’s indoor studio and outdoor 3G pitch to provide a widerange of activities available to participants.

Children will be able to try their hand at cricket, table tennis, curling, dance, football as well as the interactive SMART table.

Richard Simons, whose sons participated in the taster sessions, said:

“They’ve made a lot of good friends - it’s given them a sense of inclusion and a feeling of being part of a team.”

The sessions will take place every Saturday the existing disability home Match Day Club provision doesn’t run.

Thank You! A ‘Sporting Light’ thank you to some of our other fundraisers this month including:

Cromer Youth Football Club, who have raised £642 to date through a raffle and a Speed Kick competition at their Summer Tournament

Ex-Servicemen Club in Aylsham who raised £595 at their Keymer Cup Charity Darts Evening, held at the British Legion Club Schools that have taken part in the Premier League Enterprise programme who have collectively raised £2,107.48

Spotlight on a Business Champion: Steeles Law have been busy raising funds for the Sporting Light Appeal with their Sporting Predictions Tournament.

As part of the initiative, local businesses, key clients and partners of Steeles Law are set a variety of fun sporting prediction challenges across the year.

Over 40 teams, including banks, accountants and various large companies across Norwich, have taken part.

Additional events have also been held, including most recently a ‘Contract Bedlam’ teambuilding challenge at Mantra nightclub.

Gemma Hoskins, Steeles Law marketing manager, said “It was important to use the Tournament to support a local charity and the CSF seemed the perfect fit for our sports themed events.”

Over £1,100 has been raised for the Sporting Light Appeal to date.
