We have produced this document to celebrate the amazing work of Norwich City FC and its Foundation during one of the most difficult periods any of us can remember, but first I wish to thank everyone who has helped us successfully navigate this incredibly challenging year.

The Club and Foundation strived to be a beacon of support for the community during 2020, but we have received phenomenal support in return, and we are hugely grateful.

Much of the Foundation’s work in the community is supported by money raised from its range of fundraising events, which were cancelled in 2020 because of the coronavirus.

At a time when we needed them most, Norwich City fans came to the rescue and showed their enormous sense of pride in the Club and Foundation’s community work by donating an amazing £175,000 from their season ticket and membership rebates.

Foundation staff and other supporters of the organisation helped the cause further, raising a combined total of over £25,000 by joining the national 2.6 challenge initiative that replaced the Virgin Money London Marathon.

Another threat to the Foundation’s sustainability came later in the year when the rearranged date for Run Norwich, our largest fundraising event, also fell victim to restrictions.

This time it was the Run Norwich community that stepped up to show their support, as thousands chose to waive their right to a refund and main sponsors Aviva provided a package of support, allowing the Foundation to meet already-incurred costs and to continue funding

the legacy mental health project Run for Me. Partners and sponsors of our community hub The Nest, under pressure themselves, continued to support so that the project could reach completion and the community could benefit from the facilities. We can’t wait to be able to open its doors and welcome everyone back on site.

There were examples of generosity and goodwill like this throughout the year, too numerous to mention, but please know if you supported us in anyway, we are humbled and extremely grateful.

Through all the challenges of last year, we are proud of the flexibility, innovation, and determination of our team to come through for our community as they always do.

It drives us forward to know that we are helping, and we look forward to making an impact on many more people in the years to come.

Thanks also to the Foundation’s Trustees and Nest Directors for their passion and guidance throughout.

The Canaries Covid-19 Community Support Project Shortly after the UK went into its first nationwide lockdown, Norwich City’s players, coaching team, senior staff, and directors donated over £200,000 plus gift aid to create the Canaries Covid-19 community support project, which was designed to help the community respond to the pandemic in a number of ways.

The project had three core objectives: • Supporting our fans where necessary and undertaking community engagement initiatives • Supporting the most vulnerable in our wider community by working with local charities, local authorities, and community groups • Supporting the NHS and carers to help them do their job The project helped Norwich City and the Foundation to win a Changing Lives Special Recognition Award at the EDP Business Awards.

The response

Art and Design department to hospitals, care homes and medical settings across Norfolk.

A total of 13,898 individual items of PPE were delivered during this project. Working with NHS Norfolk and Waveney CCG, the club delivered PPE to 13 different sites, as well as a large drop to one site, which included 26 resus kits to be distributed across Norfolk GP surgeries.

Delivery of food parcels and care packages Over 2,500 care packages, containing over 100,000 items, were delivered to local charities and the wider community A coordinated effort between Football Club and Foundation staff, saw packages prepared in the stadium concourse and delivered across the county.

Players, such as Christoph Zimmermann, and former players Adam Drury and Simon Lappin were involved in the delivery of packages.

Some deliveries were made to the Norfolk Resilience Forum, who helped to coordinate deliveries, while some were received by charities including Dawn’s New Horizon, New Routes, Leeway, Soul Church, and Mile Cross Food Distribution Hub.

Delivering cakes and signed shirts 800 signed shirts and Delia Smith cakes were delivered to surgeries and hospitals The Club visited each GP surgery, hospital and care home in Norfolk with a personalised gift of a handmade cake and signed football shirt, to say a heartfelt thank you for their magnificent effort in looking after the elderly and vulnerable.

The Club had a fabulous reaction to these calls alone, with some Care Home Managers in tears of joy that they had been recognised by the Club, as a lot had felt forgotten.

Calls to fans

Over 7,000 telephone calls were made to season ticket holders aged 60+ Members of Norwich City’s first team squad, alongside staff from the Club and Foundation made phone calls to potentially vulnerable supporters and where needed, follow up calls or deliveries were made.

Delivery of PPE

13,898 individual items of PPE were delivered to hospitals, care homes and medical settings At the beginning of the pandemic, PPE was in short supply, so Norwich City teamed up with Norwich School to deliver PPE made by the Norwich School

Pete Dye and John Howes, First Team Kit Managers, carried out many of the deliveries personally for this project, and travelled over 2600 miles in doing so.

They visited 640 care homes, GP surgeries and hospitals, taking 800 personalised signed football shirts and an equal amount of Delia Smith recipe carrot cakes, made freshly at the Club daily with them as gifts, including letters of thanks from joint majority shareholders Delia Smith and Michael Wynn-Jones.

The Nest

Building The Nest At the end of 2019, the Foundation launched a joint fundraising campaign with Norwich City Football Club to raise the final £1 million needed to complete construction on its £4.6 million community hub, The Nest.

About The Nest

The site, a disused former sports ground, has been open since September 2018 following the renovation of the existing clubhouse, the relaying of seven grass football pitches, and the installation of five residential bunk boxes.

Located in Horsford near Norwich International Airport

The second phase has included construction of a new hub building housing two multi-use spaces, an IT suite, a café area, and disability accessible changing rooms, while a new full-size, floodlit 3G pitch was the first part of phase two to be completed and opened in 2020.

Since September 2018, the site has had 25,406 visitors

In addition, a challenge woods activity area and outdoor classroom has been built, thanks to support from the Norfolk County Council Infrastructure Fund.

The #BuildTheNest campaign saw Norwich City Football Club match fund up to £500,000 and despite the coronavirus pandemic, the campaign reached its target and construction has been completed, with the new building set to open when pandemic restrictions allow.

When fully open, it will increase the Foundation’s reach by a further 12,000 people every year

The hub will be a venue for many of the Foundation’s programmes for Health & Wellbeing, Participation & Community Engagement, and Education & Employability thanks to its facilities for being active, learning, and connecting people.

The Nest is also the new home of Norwich City Women FC.

Helping older people to stay active and connected

Boosting mental health The Foundation’s flagship fundraising event, Run Norwich, has helped us to fund a legacy project called Run for Me to support people’s mental health and wellbeing.

Our Extra Time programme, which involves weekly sports and social sessions, had 40 regular participants in 2020. When restrictions took hold, social sessions were moved online while activities and exercises were provided to the group weekly. Members were also called by the team to check on their wellbeing and reduce potential loneliness.

The group is free to all and participants meet weekly for a running session at the Foundation’s hub, The Nest, followed by a social hour with tea and coffee.

While pandemic restrictions have been in place, Foundation staff have stayed in contact through regular catch ups, check in calls and an online running group that has helped to keep participants active.

The group have had virtual social sessions with City players Sam Byram and Michael McGovern, as well as Canary legend Bryan Gunn.

Our walking football programme grew, as a pathway session was added at The Nest added to complement the more advanced group that takes place at Carrow Park near the Club’s stadium.

Supporting people with disabilities As an initial response to the pandemic, the Foundation’s disability team set about making welfare calls to potentially vulnerable participants, before developing remote engagement activities to keep everyone connected and active.

There were over 300 attendances at disability online activity sessions during lock down including watch-a-long match day clubs for first team games and the ever-popular dance sessions.

The team have even joined forces with their counterparts from Aston Villa for a joint quiz night!

Running Norwich - virtually Since 2015, the Foundation has organised Run Norwich a mass participation 10K road race that sees thousands of people run through Norwich’s city centre streets.

The 2020 edition was due to be the biggest yet, after selling out 8,500 places in a matter of hours, however the pandemic caused the event to be postponed and later cancelled.

50 attendances on Premier League Kicks pan-disability sessions

On the date that the rearranged Run Norwich had been due to take place, over 1,500 people ran 10K near to their homes and submitted their times for the Run Norwich Virtual Race.

Up to 9 powerchair players attended weekly activity sessions online

case study Julian is a member of our Run for Me programme that supports people with their mental health.

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer and came to Run for Me looking for positive activity to help him manage his mental health, alongside the stresses of his diagnosis and treatment.

Here is how Run for Me helped him, in his own words: In December 2017 I was diagnosed with prostate cancer.

In my case it was not possible to operate so the recommended treatment was seven weeks of radiotherapy followed by three years of hormone therapy, which I’m still undergoing.

The hormone treatment has a number of side effects, which have had a big effect on me: the main problems are disrupted sleep patterns, inability to concentrate, fatigue and lack of energy / stamina, mood swings and becoming emotional and depressed.

I recently had to take time off from work due to depression triggered by my treatment. Although back at work now I am finding it difficult to concentrate and work at the levels I was previously, and find it a real struggle some days.

I was looking for some sort of activity or interest that would take my mind off things. To find something that made me focus on it and forget my other problems, to get fitter both physically and mentally. I found out about the Run For Me sessions through a Couch To 5K course that I was attending.

Our coach Dudley is supportive and understanding and takes a real interest in people.

The sessions are usually effort based, meaning that people undertake the same activity but at their own pace and there is plenty of opportunity to interact with the other members of the group and talk to them during the session. Everyone is very empathetic and understanding and I really look forward to meeting up with them every week.

I’ve made some very good friends from the sessions and I’ve found that they enable me to focus on them alone and clear my mind of other things that I’ve got going on. Pushing myself hard at the sessions has a very calming effect on me and makes me feel very relaxed and chilled afterwards.

Inspiring Primary School Children

Providing further education opportunities for young people

The Foundation’s work in schools uses the power of Norwich City to raise the aspirations, skills, and wellbeing of local children through a number of different programmes.

The Foundation’s Football & Education programmes have 187 young people studying for a further education qualification, while continuing their development on the football pitch.

In 2020, the team were forced to innovate to maintain their support for schools: During pandemic restrictions, the team worked to provide home-schooling resources for parents and teachers, introducing new intervention activities to aid with schoolwork engagement, online assemblies, weekly physical activities that children could follow, and wellbeing support.

The team have also continued to deliver school sport and extra-curricular clubs for primary schools with children of key workers, when schools were otherwise closed.

Supporting Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils The Foundation has worked in partnership with the Premier League, Norfolk County Council, the Professional Footballers’ Association, and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk to support Key Stage 3 and 4 pupils through its Positive Futures programme.

Delivered over two strands, Protect and Prepare, the interventions look to protect young people against a number of growing issues in today’s society, through a series of weekly workshops, 1-2-1 mentorship, and multi-day residential visits.

The ‘Protect’ strand is a 12-week programme aimed at KS3 pupils and aims to educate participants on risks such as drugs and alcohol, knife crime, exploitation, extremism and more, so that they may make better choices and remain on a positive path.

The ‘Prepare’ strand supports KS4 pupils’ skills and positive relationships, while enhancing mental and physical wellbeing–sessions include revision techniques, managing stress, and physical activity.

Using the engagement power of Norwich City Football Club, the Foundation also delivered the Premier League Inspires programme to KS3 pupils, which helped to develop their enterprise skills and awareness of environmental issues.

Pupils designed a product for Norwich City to sell in the club store, before completing a social action project linked to the Sky Ocean Rescue initiative.

Through partnerships with the Wensum Trust and East Norfolk Sixth Form College, the students complete a Cambridge National Extended Diploma in Sport, A Levels, or a BTEC, depending on their place of study. Exit pathways including university in the UK or abroad, the Foundation’s own degree programme, employment with the Foundation or Football Club, as well as continuing to play football at various levels.

When pandemic restrictions were brought in, the team adapted to deliver academic provision online with an exceptional attendance rate, as high as 97%.

Providing continuing education for adults Working in partnership with the EFL Trust and the University of South Wales, a new Foundation degree in Community Football Coaching & Development was launched, based at The Nest.

The course develops the skills and qualities that are required to work within professional football club’s community departments or national governing bodies in areas of growth such associal inclusion, community coaching and football development.

At the end of the two years, students have the opportunity to complete a “top up” year to leave with a full BSc (Hons) degree in Football Coaching, Development and Administration.

The Foundation has also provided Adult Education opportunities through its FC Live online programme, which has seen guest speakers from Norwich City FC and other professional football settings including Stuart Webber, Ed Wooten, and Chris Domogalla (Norwich City), Ben Bartlett (Fulham), and Dean Rastrick (Tottenham Hotspur).

A youngster from a school in Norwich has made positive strides forward, thanks to a Premier League programme.

Ten-year-old David, from Heartsease, was a participant on the Premier League Primary Stars (PLPS) sessions delivered by the Community Sports Foundation at Heartsease Primary Academy last autumn.

Once a week, David and his classmates enjoyed an outdoor sport and wellbeing session run by the Foundation’s PLPS Officer Jake Mardell, followed by a classroom session led by colleague Richard Graham.

The indoor session focussed on goal-setting and positive mindsets, more important than ever in a year disrupted by the cycle of lockdowns.

This two-tiered approach quickly yielded results for David and his classmates: “We could instantly see its effect on the children’s mental and physical wellbeing across the year group. Most of what was delivered in the practical sessions was positively enforcing lots of good behaviours and being active, but also challenging the pupils to do more outside of the sessions.” said Jake Mardell.

He continued: “The work with Richard helped them understand what stress was and how to talk about their emotions openly, while learning methods to keep calm and set goals.”

David embraced the sessions enthusiastically and set himself two goals of improving his running and controlling his anger.

Muhamadu, David’s dad, noticed his son’s behaviour changing for the better.

“He used to come home very angry from school many times. He couldn’t control himself. Now, every time we go to the park, while his siblings

Further outcomes

David said: “At my park there’s a running track and I run there often now. The first time I went I felt exhausted, but now I can do two laps.”

Across the class group as a whole, class teacher Mrs Tibble noticed a range of positive outcomes.

Thanks to the indoor sessions, Mrs Ann-Marie Tibble, David’s class teacher, reflected that he is now “making better decisions, and he no longer leaves the classroom during lessons. He is using coping mechanisms to remain calm when he feels angry.”

Inspired by the sessions, David has set himself two more goals: get better at maths and become a great baker.

“David’s been fantastic. It was great to see how much he put into, and in turn got out of, the sessions,” said Jake. “We’ll stay in touch, and hope to hear how he’s continuing his good work.”

“The children were all disappointed when their afternoon lessons were over, they all responded really well to both the indoor and outdoor activities. Behaviour in the playground has improved considerably; students are more co-operative and are playing fairly.”

Reducing the risk of violent youth crime

Promoting inclusivity The Foundation strives to embed equality, diversity, and inclusion in all of our provision and in our working environment.

Onside, the Foundation’s new three-year programme delivered in partnership with Norfolk County Council Early Intervention Team worked with 16 young people and their families who were deemed at risk of being involved in youth violence.

The Foundation has developed an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy and has appointed a strategic lead, who meets on a monthly basis with five other Foundation staff members who are responsible for EDI in key areas on a day-to-day basis:

Thanks to funding from the Premier League Charitable Fund, the programme works to improve young people’s ability to reduce the risks of falling into youth violence and help them and their families to make better life choices.

Normally, each participant and their family would spend an hour a week with the Foundation’s Onside Officer at The Nest, but instead the contact has continued online during pandemic restrictions in the form of fitness sessions as well as family games and workshops.

Women and Girls’ Engagement Race and equality LGBT+

Creating positive behaviour in young people Despite the pandemic and restrictions, the National Citizen Service team were able to deliver a revised summer and autumn programme to a total of 651 young people.

Our Premier League Kicks programme adapted to deliver Kicks in the Park in nine highly deprived areas in the county, providing packed lunches to participants thanks to funding from the Canaries Covid-19 Community Support Project.

The Foundation supported the EFL Trust and Network Rail’s You vs Train campaign via social media, including a video featuring former players Adam Drury and Simon Lappin, as well as features in the first team’s match day programme. The campaign aims to help young people understand the dangers of stepping on railway tracks.

Disability HR

The Proud Canaries are Norwich City FC’s LGBT-inclusive football team who train weekly at the Foundation’s Carrow Park facility with the support of a Foundation coach.

The team is officially backed by the club and wear the club colours.

Keeping children active The Foundation’s soccer schools had visits in February from Norwich City first team players Tim Krul, Michael McGovern, and Jamal Lewis. The summer holiday courses had over 500 participants, while October half term saw a further 440 children take part.

This February half term included a live online soccer school with morning and afternoon sessions all week.

Meanwhile our football development programme helped its participants to stay connected and active throughout lockdown restrictions, hosting bi-weekly virtual training sessions and workshops, and providing welfare calls for players.

Onside:

This is likely to be the first time you’ve heard about the Foundation’s Onside programme. It doesn’t have a webpage, flyers, or posters, and rarely features on the charity’s busy social media channels.

the aim is to keep the young participants ‘onside’; trying to break the cycle of violent youth crime and exclusions and to help steer them back into mainstream education before they reach their teenage years.

At any one time only a small number of families are enrolled in the programme – which, when judged by participant numbers alone, makes it the smallest of all the Foundation’s 47 programmes.

Now in the second year of its delivery, the programme is fronted by the charity’s Onside Officer Luke Sweeney.

“I work with around fifteen families a year.

There are reasons why the programme flies beneath the radar, of course.

All the participants are referred directly to the Foundation from Norfolk County Council’s Children Services and Early Intervention departments.

This referral process, coupled with the importance of protecting the privacy of its participants, explains why the programme doesn’t make the public ‘splash’ its Foundation counterparts do. But in its own quiet way, the programme is changing people’s lives.

“The programme was born out of the Future Canaries programme, which we ran in partnership with Norfolk County Council until 2015,” explains Stevie Bramble, the Foundation’s Curriculum Manager.

He continues: “The programme focussed on improving family relationships alongside attitude, attainment and attendance at schools. The children all had a range of complex needs and challenges, ranging from attendance issues to violence.

“When a new pot of funding became available thanks to the Premier League Charitable Fund in 2019, the programme was born again under its new name.”

The scheme was developed in partnership with Norfolk County Council’s Early Intervention Team.

At its core, and as the name of the programme suggests,

“Typically, the young people are not in mainstream education, or have been excluded from school. The families are often subject to a family support plan implemented by the Early Intervention Team.”

environment. We’ve been utilising the new 3G pitch, which gives us a lot of space for the sessions.”

Of course, the Covid-19 pandemic has forced the Foundation to change how the programme is delivered.

In-person sessions have been postponed, with delivery switching online.

Once the new Challenge Woods outdoor playground and the main Hub building opens later this year (which will include new I.T. suites and classrooms), Luke will be using even more of the site’s impressive facilities.

The one-to-one nature of the programme means the content of the session can be tailored to the family.

Luke hosts weekly online fitness lessons, family games and workshops, maintaining the strong one-to-one bond.

He hopes that the young people will progress and develop enough to be able to join other mainstream Foundation programmes, such as Premier League Kicks.

“Sustaining focus and interest for young people with behavioural problems can be very tricky, so finding new and innovative ways to keep the young person engaged is vital.

“The lockdowns have brought challenges to us all, but our families are particularly vulnerable. My catch-ups aim to not only tackle boredom but break up the potential for toxic environments forming.”

Despite its challenging nature, the thrill for Luke is when a session comes together.

“The flexible nature of the course enables me to take the young person’s hobbies and interests into account. If the participant is into boxing, we’ll incorporate a lot of boxing. If they’re into football and Norwich City Football Club, the curriculum will be geared towards that.”

As a surprise, the Foundation supplied each family with a ‘lockdown’ package of footballs, cones and other sporting equipment.

For an hour a week, each participant and their family spends time with Luke at The Nest, the Foundation’s new state-of-the-art community hub in north Norwich.

While some of the content focusses on issues such as the dangers of gangs, drugs and alcohol, many of the activities are about teamwork, communication and family cohesion.

“One of the games we play is Blindfolded Foot Golf, where the blindfolded participant’s family and siblings must use teamwork to guide them around the course.

“Everyone was so grateful; they were very well received and have been used a lot to help cope with lockdown. Some of our families would not have been able to afford these items, or had any access to them, so it was really special to be able to drop the equipment off.”

Out of lockdown periods, The Nest is the home venue for the programme.

“There is no better feeling than when I finish a session with a family, and you can feel the glow of positivity coming from both the child and their parents.

“Hearing the words that they ‘cannot wait to return next week’ is a truly humbling experience. Job satisfaction at its best.”

Stevie Bramble concludes: “I think the programme shows why the Foundation is so much more than its ‘football programmes and soccer schools’ stereotype. The impact the programme is having on these individual families is massive. We are changing lives.”

We have seen a positive change of behaviour in A which had contributed to their improved school attendance and behaviours at home.

Disability dance Sessions We are really grateful for the dance sessions online - it’s one of the things J looks forward to, and she’s getting a bit of exercise and seeing her friends, so it helps in so many ways! She’s much happier if she has a scheduled routine. Thank you to everyone!

Just wanted to say thanks so much for today’s session. [My daughter] has struggled a bit over the weeks with her confidence in the sessions and has her camera off a lot of the time. But her confidence is growing, and she had her camera on a bit today so that’s a big step for her. You all do a fab job.
