e are suddenly facing a dilemma. One which we humans were avoiding for a long time. This dilemma is more major than the virus and the economic crisis. It is about facing ourselves alone and discovering who we are, what we are, what are our likes and dislikes and finding the courage to deal with ourselves. The journey of finding and understanding ourselves shouldn’t have begun with isolation. Instead, it should have been ingrained into our psyches, made to fit into our schedules, and engraved into our minds before the world stopped. Needless to say, we have always seen ourselves from the eyes of others, often
complete strangers. Sadly, we have not seen ourselves for a long time. Instead we use others as our mirrors; those who judge us without knowing who we are and what we are capable of. Allah is telling us with this disease that the dominion of this universe belongs to Him, as it always has. He did give us survivors a second chance to correct ourselves. To drop our selfish attitudes and to run towards goodness. This is another opportunity. Is it the final chance? No-one can predict it, but as Muslims we need to realize that each breath is a blessing and is also a chance to prove ourselves to our Lord; prove our sincerity and purpose. As this 2020 is unique among years, so is this issue among others of the NorthWest Muslim Magazine. This issue is filled with pieces where our writers have poured their souls into the pages. They truly bleed with the pain of their fellow human. This issue is for those soul searchers who want to find themselves with corals and pearls after a deep dive into the darkest part of the ocean, to the surface. 22

HUMOR
By: Beenish Khurshid, Montreal, Quebec This humor piece is based on the true and real events of an unnamed North American Imam. The story has been fictionalized to obfuscate the identity of the Escapee Imam.
It Was the evening before Jumu'ah, and states and provinces had just begun instituting lockdowns: no public gatherings over 250 people; universities and schools closed. Mosques too had joined in too. *URGENT - Friday Prayer Notice* (March 12): Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak in **** Experts are recommending social distancing, Friday Prayer is canceled for this Friday (Mar. 13). It is suggested that you do not attend Friday prayer elsewhere due to the pandemic, and instead offer 4 rakat Zuhr prayer from where you ordinarily reside. The heart is a vessel which can hold whatever we put in it. What if instead of filling our hearts with obsessions, egos, selfishness, narcissism, selfrighteousness, delusions, and greed, we fill the heart with love, kindness, care, empathy, justice, equability, and humility. Our attitudes, passions, actions, beliefs, cultural norms, or societal rituals must be attuned with what the creator wants and what his creation needs. This will put us into a clear straight path of moderation, which will then heal our hearts and enlighten our souls. Once we do that Allah has promised us a great bounty out of it. [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, return to your Lord, wellpleased and pleasing [to Him], And enter among My [righteous] servants and enter My Paradise."(89:27-30)

You have tried to be a good Muslim. Or you think you tried. At the hospital they test you for COVID-19 and say that you will get the results tomorrow and you should go home and confine yourself in one room. body. But now it is too late. No time for asking forgiveness. Being sick, you are in no condition to pray more and go out and start giving charity. You are in such a state of panic that you can’t think straight. You try to think of a du’a, but your mind becomes foggy and you can’t remember any du’a. The only thing you remember in this panicky state is Istighfar! You start saying Astaghfirullah. You are begging to Allah (SWT) to give you more time. So whatever thing you have been given - it is but [for] enjoyment of the worldly life. But what is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who have believed and upon their Lord rely. HADITH Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) reported Allah's Messenger ()ﷺas saying: Every (good) deed of the son of Adam would be multiplied, a good deed receiving a tenfold to seven hundredfold reward. Allah, the Exalted and Majestic, has said: With the exception of fasting, for it is done for Me and I will give a reward for it, for one abandons his passion and food for My sake. There are two occasions of joy for one who fasts, joy when he breaks it, and joy when he meets his Lord, and the breath (of an observer of fast) is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk. But at this moment, the butterflies seem especially appealing, charismatic, and mesmerizing. Though these butterflies are not new to him, and daffodils are as he has only seen these daffodils in books or websites, but not in reality. However, these butterflies are in hoards, filling the air with their unique fluttering noise and moving from one flower to the other. His desire to see and feel the flowers is completely taken away by those butterflies. I see myself as him, I make a huge bucket list, start many things I want to complete, and somehow other projects take away my breath, time and energy. (Continued on page 44)

It’s like I start a new pursuit to get further through my bucket list, but whether I accomplish it, or accomplish nothing at all - that’s another story. Instead of feeling good about having started something, my heart feels upset, sore and miserable because I haven’t been able to cross it off my list. Instead of admiring the spontaneity of the

and the new experiences I gain, I feel like I am facing setbacks for the uncompleted tasks. Is there a problem with not completing the tasks you start? Do we make lists just to cross them off and feel satisfied? What’s the purpose? What if I enjoy the spontaneity of the moment and enjoy its naturalness and beauty? Does it mean that I should just not make a bucket list ever? Probably not. Sure, I will make a list. So if not to track completion, what rationale does the bucket list give me? It is probably a thinking process to imagine what is beyond the mundane chores of life; ponder about what is lying beyond and beneath the superficiality of this world. It gives me a
reason, a purpose. But at the same time if my list is too rigid, too conformed, then I will not be able to explore past its inelasticity. What prevents me from seeing afar is that my mind and heart are kept focused on the drumroll I hear after concluding a task, a sense of worth after a demanding accomplishment. Instead of experiencing the depth of that journey, satisfied for its efficacy, it’s positive effects on life, I get mesmerized by its conclusion. (Continued on page 45)

Is my purpose in this world is to create one list after another and keep running behind each? Or is my purpose is to walk the path of life with tranquility, dignity, and gratefulness. Pick flowers on my way, smell some roses, watch the birds and butterflies fluttering, enjoying each moment; clearing up the thorns in the path for myself and others who are coming behind me. Leave some flowers for others, plant some seeds of hope, love, care and gratitude. Someday there will be more flowers, lush green forests where birds will perch, animals will roam, which will provide shelter, food and shade to millions. We might be there to enjoy that moment, and even if we

major issue that is impacting our community in recent years is the high divorce rates among young couples. Young couples who were born or raised in Canada are aware of conflict resolution tools, yet struggle to apply these tools in domestic situations. On the other hand, migrant couples of all ages going through divorce do not show proper awareness of conflict resolution methodology. Migrant couples must learn the mindset required to minimize the impact of divorce and marital conflict on all parties, especially children, who are the greatest victims. Communication and negotiations are God given

SUHOOR WARS HALEEM

n every Muslim culture there are food sused for suhoor, (early breakfast before fasting) whose nutritious value and satiability people swear by. Our editors too have their own opinions about it. They also jumped on the bandwagon and decided to compare the two food options. One of the options is common breakfast staple among North American while other option is unheard of as a breakfast.
you a lot of dismay including being “Hangry”. One of our editors swore by the filling and satiating ability of bagels while others think there are other more filling and convenient options available. As the part of North America we live in, we have long winter nights to long summer days. As we know Ramadan changes around ten days per year, thus Ramadan falls in every month of the year in around thirty-six years. This makes opening of the fast in summer at 10:30 pm while eating early suhoor at 4 am. This leaves us to very long fast, for which we need to be well fed for the whole day. Since days are long, we must have nutritious food in suhoor and Iftar to continue the work of the day as well as into the night. Food also shouldn’t affect us negatively that we feel drowsy for nightly prayers.
Suhoor the main meal of Ramadan, not only it is a sunnah, but also has many benefits other than filling you up for the day. A nutritious meal at the start of the day can save

Staying for a long time in stomach the winner is “Haleem” a SouthAsian dish. Whose non-spicy Middle Eastern counterpart is “Mujadara” African counterpart is “Harira” and “Harees” a dish staple to Arab countries of the Persian Gulf. This dish filled with slow releasing mixture of complex carbohydrates, meat and spices, which stays in the body and provide energy throughout the day. This dish can be filling as is, but, if you like to add some bread or eggs or bagel or milk to the mix, you can easily do it. It is more filling and keeps you filled and you going for a while and not grip you by Hunger until iftar.
