MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT As I look back at the 2016 fiscal year, (July 1, 2015–June 30, 2016) I am humbled by all that you helped us accomplish.

In this annual report, you will find stories of hope and dedication. Stories of people like you who stepped up to make a difference for the students and cultural institutions that drive our regional economy.

You are an important part of NMC’s story. Your support inspires entrepreneurism and innovation right here in our community. Last year you helped students succeed in the classroom and celebrated new commitments to expand the Dennos Museum Center.

In reflecting on all we accomplished together in one year, I can’t help but think about all that your support means to the future of the students and this institution. Together we will continue to foster thought leaders and entrepreneurs, innovators, and pioneers.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The purpose of the NMC Foundation is to advance the work of the College. Thanks to you, that work is more successful each year than the one before.

Through charitable support of NMC programs, scholarships, and facilities, the Foundation raised more than $4.7 million in fiscal year 2016. All of us at NMC are tremendously grateful for your support and the transformational gifts to the Dennos Museum Center made by Diana and Richard Milock and Barbara and Dudley Smith, which are featured in this year’s report.

You gave 3,065 gifts to programs, which have helped NMC enrich academic programs in eighty areas— from business administration to biology; from culinary arts to criminal justice; from plant and maritime sciences to social work and world languages.

Your 630 gifts to scholarships helped students like Roxy Scrivener, and nearly 1,000 others, succeed at NMC (story on page 8).

Like you, Diana and Richard Milock, and Barbara and Dudley Smith III, consider the Dennos Museum Center one of our region’s greatest cultural assets. Thanks to Richard and Diana’s record-setting $2 million gift, and Barbara and Dudley’s transformational $1 million gift, the Dennos has embarked on an exciting 15,000 square foot expansion.

Diana and Richard’s gift is the largest single gift from living donors ever received by Northwestern Michigan College. “We saw this as an opportunity to have a major impact on a community resource that we think is really important to the life of Traverse City. We’re really just so excited to be able to do this,” said Diana.

When you visit the Dennos in the fall of 2017, thanks to Diana and Richard’s gift, you’ll see two new permanent collection galleries, additional

classroom space, backstage storage space for musical equipment, and an improved loading dock.

In the expanded space, you can expect to see NMC faculty using the Dennos as an extension of their classrooms more frequently. You can also expect to enjoy more works by outstanding local, national, and international artists.

Barbara and Dudley’s generous gift to the Dennos will expand the museum’s signature Inuit art gallery. “We just consider the College northern Michigan’s cultural centerpiece,” said Dudley.

It was at the Dennos that Barbara and Dudley first saw and fell in love with Inuit art.

Thanks to Barbara and Dudley’s gift, when you visit the Dennos this fall you’ll see an expanded Inuit gallery, which will include additional storage space. After the project’s completion you can expect to see NMC faculty incorporating the collection more often into their curriculum. You can also expect to see the Inuit art collection to continue growing; currently it stands at nearly 1,500 works. The Smiths have also bequeathed their personal Inuit art collection of about a dozen prints and 40 sculptures.

The expansion of the Dennos museum made possible by these generous gifts and by your continued support, will culminate the museum’s 25th Anniversary year.

The generous gifts to the Dennos from the Milocks and Smiths were made in the longstanding tradition of community support for the Dennos. The museum opened in 1991 following a $6.5 million community campaign, and its outstanding programming has reached international recognition thanks to your support.

YOUR SCHOLARSHIP SUPPORT HELPED ROXY BREAK THROUGH BARRIERS Scholarship recipient Roxy Scrivener’s favorite poem begins: “Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?”

She relates to its message of thriving in adversity. “My concrete was a family plagued by addiction, sexual abuse, and financial instability.

Neither of my parents went to college, and I watched them my entire life struggle to make ends meet and provide for me and my sisters.”

Roxy grew up caring for her younger siblings while her mom worked. From age 15, Roxy worked 30 hours a week, missing out on many extracurricular activities at school.

Thanks to your generosity, she found opportunities at NMC; scholarships allowed her to cut her work schedule from 40 to 32 hours a week and more fully engage in her studies. Roxy became an officer in the Phi Theta Kappa honors society, where she says, “I gained valuable leadership skills, and more importantly, I gained self-confidence.”

Roxy Scrivener (NMC ’16) overcame great adversity and was able to thrive at NMC thanks to scholarship support from donors like you.

At NMC, she found a talent for software development. Working in the campus tutoring center, she “discovered a love for education and a passion for empowering students to break barriers and overcome obstacles.”

Roxy plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems through NMC’s University Center. “I hope to make a difference in other people’s lives the way that (NMC donors) and so many others have made a difference in mine. Without donors like you, I could not ever have accomplished what I have. You have broken away the concrete and allowed me to grow. Thank you.”

ALUMNUS ROBERT TANIS GIVES BACK AND HONORS FATHER As a teen, Robert Tanis (NMC ’59) had ideas about his future, and they did not include college. But when you are the son of Northwestern Michigan College’s first administrator, Preston Tanis, you do not skip college. “The first year was truly a train wreck!” Robert recalls.

Thanks to strong support from NMC’s dedicated faculty, year two was an abrupt turnaround. “Velma Brand encouraged me to fall in love with biology. Helmut Trepte and Nick Rajkovich, among others, were great teachers. And I achieved much better grades,” Robert recalls. “I can’t give enough credit to the faculty. They helped me so much.”

NMC propelled Robert into a distinguished career in the sciences, including as part of the team that established the world-class Genetics Department at Harvard Medical School.

Now retired, Robert decided to express his gratitude for the educational foundation he received at NMC, and to honor his father’s many accomplishments, by endowing the President Emeritus Preston N. Tanis Scholarship for students studying the sciences. Robert’s generosity is giving these and future students the same gift that helped him: a quality educational opportunity from NMC. 9

Please join us in congratulating the 2016 recipient of NMC’s highest honor, Charles B.“Chuck” Judson.

Like you, Chuck Judson is committed to NMC. As a member and emeritus chair of the NMC Foundation Board, Chuck has been a volunteer and advocate for two decades. His commitment was recently recognized as he was named the 2016 recipient of the Fellows award, the highest honor bestowed by the NMC Board of Trustees.

Chuck’s philanthropy has even longer longevity. Since 1986, he has given to programs ranging from student scholarships to the Dennos Museum Center, and served as a volunteer and champion for NMC’s Annual Fund Campaign. He joined the Foundation Board in 1996 and served as chair in 2001. During his tenure Chuck helped to establish the Great Lakes campus, home to signature programs including the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, the Great Lakes Culinary Institute, and the Great Lakes Water Studies Institute.

In his professional life as an attorney and shareholder at Smith Haughey Rice & Roegge, Chuck serves as an attorney of counsel to NMC.

Korvyn went on to earn a bachelor’s in business administration from Western Michigan University. He began his career at the Grand Traverse Pavilions 24 years ago, rising to become CEO of one of the region’s largest employers in 2008. Under his leadership and collaborative approach, Grand Traverse Pavilions has become a teaching facility for healthcare students from NMC.

Therese went on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Michigan and Stanford University, respectively. Since 2001 she has served as a nuclear safeguards engineer for the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria. Notably, she was a member of the IAEA’s Nobel Peace Prize-winning team in 2005. In 2015, she was promoted to a directorship at IAEA.

Michelle went on to earn multiple degrees, most recently her doctorate in Nursing Practice from Oakland University. In 2015 she was named by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as Nurse of the Year for transformational leadership, for her groundbreaking research related to pain management in hemophilia patients. Michelle is the lead clinician in Munson Medical Center’s Northern Regional Bleeding Disorder Center, the only facility of its kind in the United States that is medically managed by nurse practitioners.

Dean was senior captain of the car ferry SS Badger; senior trial master for the Marinette Marine Corporation, and assisted in the sea trials and delivery of many of its new vessels, including more than 25 U.S. Coast Guard cutters and U.S. Navy littoral combat ships. A GLMA adjunct instructor, he was beloved by the cadets. He organized staff/cadet ice hockey games and gave incoming students tours of the SS Badger. Dean never stopped giving to the academy that taught him his skills. Former GLMA superintendent Tanner says, “He was just involved in so much, and did so much to help others. Whatever I would ask, he was there,” adding that Dean “probably helped the academy more than any other graduate.”

Eleanor Lynn and John Elashkar agreed that the greatest impact on a community can be made by supporting educational opportunities.

COUPLE PROVIDES LIFE-CHANGING OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEXT GENERATION THROUGH ESTATE PLAN Northwestern Michigan College was founded thanks to the generous support of our community. Still today, gifts from community members like you help to inspire and support the next generation of learners. Eleanor Lynn­-Elashkar and her late husband, John Elashkar, have continued the tradition of community support.

A mostly retired medical malpractice defense attorney, Eleanor has also taught law school courses in trial skills as an adjunct professor at Cooley Law School in Lansing. John enjoyed a successful career as an engineer, retiring from the Lansing Board of Water and Light as Assistant General Manager of the company. They also shared a passion for arts and culture, with Eleanor an avid pianist and having sung with NMC choirs. Both have taken many classes through NMC Extended Education offerings. www.nmc.edu/give to support NMC

John and Eleanor, when devising their estate plan, evaluated the many charitable causes they had supported throughout the years. Ultimately, the couple agreed that the greatest impact on a community is made by supporting educational opportunities for the next generation.

As a result of their decision to make a planned gift to NMC and become part of the Biederman Society, the John Elashkar and Eleanor Lynn­-Elashkar Family Scholarship will be established through a future estate gift. The scholarship will support NMC students pursuing a career in medicine, law, or engineering technology with a preference for students who indicate an interest in music.

Like you, Eleanor and John have seen the value of education to change lives and communities for the better. By making NMC a part of their estate plans, this future gift will provide life-changing opportunities for generations to come.

The Biederman Society offers a way to recognize donors who provide for the future needs of the college by including a gift in their estate plans. The Society is named for Lester M. Biederman whose inspiration and dedication led to the founding of NMC.
