Raider tradition As a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC), Northwestern competes against colleges with similarly high-caliber programs in the NAIA. Conference teams have won 20 national championships since the league’s inception in 2000. Seven belong to the Raiders. In one of those rare moments in sports history, both our men’s and women’s basketball teams won national crowns on the same night in 2001. The men’s team repeated as national champs in 2003, and the women, in 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

The Red Raiders are listed by the NAIA as the ninth most winning football program since 2000. They’ve finished the season ranked in the top 25 for 10 consecutive seasons and were ranked in the top 25 for 72 straight polls, the third longest streak in the NAIA. Fifteen Northwestern teams have advanced to the playoffs since NWC became a four-year college in 1961. The Raiders were national champions in 1973 and ’83 and national runners-up in ’72, ’79 and ’84. They most recently qualified for the playoffs in 2006, finishing as a national quarterfinalist.

The Raiders have qualified for the national tournament 10 times, including five of the last six years. After winning three consecutive GPAC regular-season titles with a perfect 16-0 record, Northwestern finished last season tied with Midland for third with an 11-5 mark, falling in the conference semifinals. They ended the year with a 19-16 record, the 11th straight season with a winning record.

Head Coach Kyle Achterhoff Since being named head of Northwestern’s football program in 2009, Coach Achterhoff has compiled a 77% winning percentage (24-7), finishing in the GPAC’s top four each year. He previously served as the team’s defensive and offensive coordinator, during which time he helped guide Northwestern to an 83-35 record and three national playoff appearances. His defensive team helped the Raiders reach the Final Four in 2000. His offensive team was ranked as high as fifth in the nation for total offense in ’06.

2011 Season

Head Coach Kyle Van Den Bosch Coach Van Den Bosch has amassed an impressive 209-59 record at Northwestern, guiding the Red Raiders to five straight national tournaments, including trips to the national quarterfinals three times.

He earned GPAC Coach of the Year four times (2007–10) after guiding the Red Raiders to three consecutive undefeated GPAC regular seasons and a record win streak of 56 matches.

Men’s Soccer With five appearances in the conference postseason tournament, the Red Raiders are annual contenders for the league title. They captured their first conference championship in 2004 and qualified for the national tournament for the first time in the program’s history in 2007. Last season they returned to postseason play as the fourth seed. After defeating Doane 1-0 in the quarter-finals, the Raiders lost to third-ranked and defendingnational-champion Hastings in the semifinals.

Women’s Soccer The Red Raiders qualified for postseason play in 2007 and in 2010, when they finished in seventh place in the conference. Starting several freshmen and sophomores in key positions, the young Raider squad will look to challenge for the league’s top spot in years to come.

Head Coach Dan Swier Head of the Red Raiders’ men’s soccer program since 2008, Coach Swier holds a 31-37-6 overall record. He guided Red Raider teams to the postseason in 2008 and 2011. A 2006 Northwestern College graduate, he holds a master’s degree in exercise physiology from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Head Coach Blake Wieking Now in his fifth year as head of the women’s soccer program, Coach Wieking started and lettered four years as a midfielder for Northwestern’s men’s team. He earned all-conference honors three years and NAIA All-American recognition as a junior and senior.

Cross Country Northwestern runs in one of the most competitive conferences in the NAIA, featuring teams ranked in the top 25 each year. The Red Raiders have enjoyed plenty of success, however, finishing in the top five at the conference meet several times. Coach Bahrke joined Northwestern’s coaching staff in 2012 after teaching business and coaching cross country and track and field at Kingsley-Pierson High School in Iowa. He is a graduate of Northwestern, where he was a three-time All-American and national qualifier as a member of the 4x400 meter relay team. Bahrke earned a master’s degree in teaching from the University of Saint Mary.

The Red Raiders had another outstanding season in 2011–12, placing in the top five in all nine varsity meets despite just one senior on the roster.

They finished second at the GPAC championship and also posted two of their lowest team scores in the program’s history. The women carded the lowest team average and had three golfers finish in the top 15 at the conference championship.

Men’s Golf

The Red Raiders had one of their best seasons in 2011–12, winning the GPAC championship and qualifying for the NAIA tournament for just the third time in the program’s history. The men set the record for the lowest scoring average in a season and captured five team championships during the year. They earned votes in the NAIA coaches’ poll all season. All five players earned all-conference honors and finished within the top 16 at the conference championship.

Women’s Golf

Coach Aberson added the women's golf team to his coaching duties in 2012 after leading Northwestern's men's team for two years. The 2012 GPAC Coach of the Year for men's golf, he guided the Red Raiders to a national ranking and the GPAC championship last year.

Coach Van Der Weide was a two-year AllAmerican golfer at Otterbein University (Ohio), where she qualified for the NCAA Championship three times, finishing twice in the top 10 individually and leading her team to a top 10 finish all three years.

Men’s Basketball Northwestern’s Red Raiders were the NAIA Division II national champions in 2001 and ’03, runners-up in 1992, and finished in the Final Four in ’02, ’07 and ’08. NWC also made it to the quarterfinals in ’05 and qualified for nationals in ’06, ’11 and ’12. The Raiders have been conference champions (sharing the title in ’04 and ’07) 10 out of the last 14 seasons. Four NWC athletes have been named GPAC Player of the Year, and in ’03, Brandon Woudstra was named the NAIA Div. II Player of the Year.

Women’s Basketball The Red Raiders captured their third straight and fifth overall national championship this past season, defeating College of the Ozarks (Mo.) 75-62 in the title game. Northwestern competes in one of the toughest women’s basketball conferences in the NAIA: a GPAC school has won the national title all but one year since 2001. The Raiders finished the 2011–12 season with a 28-7 overall record under the direction of first-year head coach Chris Yaw.

Coach Yaw guided the Red Raiders to the 2012 national championship. He earned NAIA Coach of the Year honors and led his team to a 28-7 overall record.

Yaw served as the Raiders’ top assistant for seven seasons before being named head coach in 2011.

During his tenure, Northwestern was 200-41, with six trips to the national tournament, five appearances in the semifinals, and three national championships.

Head Coach Kris Korver Coach Korver has compiled a remarkable 301-92 record and .766 winning percentage during his years at Northwestern. He was named the GPAC Coach of the Year three times and once garnered NAIA Division II Coach of the Year honors. A former Raider basketball player, Korver is an instructor in the kinesiology department.

Wrestling Raider wrestlers have qualified for the national tournament 27 consecutive years, bringing home the Sportsmanship Award four of the past six years.

Northwestern finished 18th out of 35 teams at the 2012 NAIA national championships, with one wrestler—Nic Leither—finishing fifth and earning All-American honors for the third year.

Track & Field Northwestern student-athletes continue to excel in the conference and at both indoor and outdoor national track-and-field meets. Through the years, more than 100 Red Raiders have earned All-American status. This past season, NWC had 17 entries qualify for either indoor or outdoor nationals, with Matt Huseman winning the national indoor championship in the high jump.

2011-12 Season Head Coach Rik Dahl Northwestern’s head wrestling coach since 2008, Coach Dahl was one of 40 head and assistant coaches chosen to participate in the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s 2012 Leadership Academy. A former All-American at Northwestern, he was captain of the 1997 team that finished eighth at the NAIA championships— the highest finish for a Northwestern squad. Dahl was a semi-finalist and took sixth place at the national meet.

Baseball

Softball

The Raiders shared the GPAC regular-season title in 2011 and finished fifth in the regular season in 2012 with an 11-9 record. Seeded fifth in the postseason tournament, Northwestern defeated top-seeded Doane and went all the way to the title game before losing to Mount Marty. The Raiders won the NAIA Region III championship in 2007, the GPAC regular-season championship in 2008 and 2011, and the GPAC postseason tournament championship in 2010.

The Red Raiders have won 20 conference titles and qualified for the national tournament twice since 1973. NWC’s all-time record stands at 749-479, a .610 winning percentage. Within the GPAC, Northwestern has compiled a 189-95 mark, with a win percentage of .665. Past and current Raider players grace the NAIA record books in 27 different categories.

2012 Season

Head Coach Chris Nachtigall Coach Nachtigall earned GPAC Coach of the Year honors in his first season with the Red Raiders in 2012. He guided Northwestern to the GPAC regular-season title, its first since 2002, and to a national ranking for the first time in 10 years.

Prior to coming to Northwestern, he spent four years at Iowa Mennonite School, where he served as athletic director, admissions director and softball coach. Nachtigall was named SEISC and Southeast District Softball Coach of the Year in 2009.

Head Coach Brian Wede In Coach Wede’s six years as head of the Red Raiders baseball program, his teams have compiled a 178-121 record, making Northwestern second in wins among the 25 four-year college/university baseball programs in Iowa. The Red Raiders have been three wins or less from the NAIA World Series in three of Wede’s six seasons.

Women’s Tennis The Raiders qualified for postseason play for the third straight year, finishing third in the GPAC with a 5-2 record, the best mark since 2002. Seeded third, the Raiders lost in the semifinals of the GPAC tournament to end the year with an 11-11 record, the most wins since the 2002 season. Four players earned all-conference honors, including freshman Frankie Eszes, who set the single-season record for wins in a season and was named both GPAC Player of the Year and an NAIA All-American.

Korver Field Football games are played on Korver Field, which in 2004 was given a new FieldTurf artificial playing surface. Used by 18 NFL teams and a number of NCAA Div. I schools, FieldTurf has been shown to significantly decrease injuries. Two full-size practice football fields are also available to Raider athletes.

Bultman Center for Health, Physical Education and Intercollegiate Athletics Built in 1995, the Bultman Center features a gymnasium for basketball and volleyball that seats 2,200. The facility also includes a wrestling/ aerobics room, locker rooms, athletic training room, and the Korver Weight Room, with both free weights and selectorized machines.

Student-athletes at Northwestern enjoy some of the finest athletic facilities in the region .

DeWitt Physical Fitness Center Additional practice space is available in the DeWitt Center, renovated in 2011. Raider athletes utilize the one-tenth-mile, four-lane indoor track for training, while the baseball and softball teams practice in the facility during the winter months. In addition to the track, the center includes four racquetball courts, three basketball and four volleyball courts, two indoor tennis courts, and two badminton courts.

De Valois Stadium Korver Field is housed in De Valois Stadium, which seats 3,100. Along with the field, the De Valois Stadium complex includes a football/track locker room, an eight-lane polyurethane track completed in 2003, and new bleachers installed in ’06.

Soccer Field Complex Raider soccer teams compete and practice on fields renovated in 2011 through a cooperative project funded by Northwestern, the city of Orange City, and the public schools. Improvements included a new scoreboard, lighting, fencing and press box. Crews also installed a new drainage system, added irrigation to the practice fields, and leveled and reseeded both the competition and practice fields. Korver Field, with its artificial turf, is available for games during inclement weather.

MOC-Floyd Valley High School Diamonds Northwestern’s baseball and softball teams compete on the local high school’s fields. The lighted facilities with dugouts each seat 500 spectators.

Landsmeer Golf Club Raider golfers practice and play at Landsmeer, an 18-hole public course in Orange City. Opened in 1995, Landsmeer includes a driving range and putting green. Rolling hills provide golfers with an opportunity to test their skill, while prairie grasses and wildflowers enhance the aesthetic dimension of the course.

Pre-game I love getting to campus a week before everybody else and gelling as a team before school starts. I also like getting to know the newcomers and hearing what everyone did over the summer.

The right track At Northwestern, we do our best not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because we’re honoring God with our athletic performances. That’s a central theme of Raider athletics.

Network I love instantly having a group of 25 girls that I can do things with. I never had to worry about making friends because I have my team.

Tackling challenges Northwestern professors and coaches push me to be the best I can be. Classes and homework require a whole new level of concentration, and practices take physical as well as mental toughness.

Team spirit Being a freshman is a little intimidating, but from day one my teammates made me feel part of the team. During the first weeks of college, I could always count on having someone to sit with in the cafeteria.

Biology-health professions Orange City, Iowa

Davis completed more than 60% of his pass attempts, threw for 1,755 yards, and connected on 18 touchdowns as the Raiders’ sophomore quarterback. Interested in attending medical school, he serves as a science tutor and is a two-year starter on the baseball team.

Profiles Biology Thompson, Iowa

Logan is an All-American and all-conference runner, finishing seventh in the 1,000 meters at the 2012 NAIA Indoor National Meet. A future park ranger, he is active in FCA, discipleship groups, and intramural softball and basketball.

The best competition The GPAC is one of the most competitive conferences in the NAIA. At indoor nationals, GPAC runners made up almost half of the field in the 1,000meter finals. With those other teams pushing you, you’re bound to find success..

Nursing Huntington Beach, California

A two-year starter on the women’s soccer team, Alyssa serves as a midfielder/forward for the Raiders and is the team’s secondleading scorer. She attends all of the theatre department’s plays and serves as a coach for Orange City’s community soccer league.

Winning combination My coaches are the perfect pair. Coach Nessa is super smart about soccer and very intense. Coach Blake is encouraging and easy to talk to, and he knows how to help us win and grow closer as a team.

Scoring support People at Northwestern want to get to know you, and when they do, they know what you are capable of. Professors, coaches and friends all want you to be at the top of your game, and they give you opportunities to succeed.

Accounting and finance Spencer, Iowa

Michael is an NAIA Scholar-Athlete with a 77.4 scoring average for the Raider men’s golf team, which earned votes in the NAIA poll all season long. He also won the Mount Marty Invitational during the fall 2011 season. Michael plans to become a CPA or financial adviser and is involved in intramural basketball at NWC. GPAC champs A highlight of the year was winning the GPAC conference. The deficit we overcame the last day speaks volumes about how committed this team is to success.

Golf clu club I enjoy the camaraderie of our team. We’re a close-knit group of guys, and we hang out with each other constantly off the golf course, often going over to our coach’s house to watch sports on TV. Staying on course I’ve grown in my faith by being a Raider.

My teammates have helped point me to Christ and encourag ed me to honor God in all I do.

Profiles Ben Miller

Physical education and health Brookings, South Dakota A three-year starter who has scored more than 1,000 points, Ben helped lead Northwestern to the national tournament in 2012. He ranked second in the GPAC in rebounding, pulling down 7.7 boards per game, and averaged 13.6 points per contest.

He was named a third-team All-American as a junior and has been chosen twice for first-team all-conference honors.

Championship pick I picked Northwestern because I heard a lot of great things about the school and the basketball program. I also wanted a chance to play for the national championship, and the Raiders consistently make it to nationals.

Man-to-man Basketball wouldn’t be as fun as it is without the close relationships on the team. We’re like brothers.

Post-game Faith is a part of everything I’m n i volved in at Northwestern.

Coaches and professors keep us focused on the bigger picture.

Double-teamed Faith is the foundation for both academics and athletics at Northwestern. Professors encourage us to apply our Christian beliefs and practices to each subject. As a nursing major, I’ve been challenged to think about how I can combine my beliefs with my future occupation.

Home run When I first visited Northwestern, I had a feeling unlike that of any other college visit.

The sense of community was so welcoming. I knew instantly this was the place for me.

Ace serve Northwestern has been a popular choice for my family. I visited the college when my older brother attended. Its smaller-sized campus and inviting community were extremely appealing.

Nursing Huron, South Dakota

Sam is a two-year letter winner and valuable reserve for the Raiders’ national championship teams of 2011 and 2012. A post player, she scored an average of 7 points and made 4.5 rebounds per game. She serves as a science tutor and the leader of a discipleship group.

Overtime Winning national championships will always be a highlight, but what I’ll remember are the jokes, the pranks, the

nicknames, the Bible studies, the nail biters and the road trips.

Goal tending Our coaches are wonderful Christian examples. They promote hard work in the classroom, service of others, building relationships, and investing in our walk with God.

Exercise science Hastings, Nebraska

Alex is a two-year starting shortstop for the Raiders. She earned second team all-GPAC honors as a freshman and was a member of Northwestern’s regular-season championship team as a sophomore. A future personal trainer or occupational or physical therapist, Alex plays intramural sports and serves as a peer tutor.

Covering the bases My professors are very intentional about relating what they are teaching to our daily lives and our faith. It’s refreshing to be able to pray together as a class, and knowing my profs are Christians makes them more approachable.

Strike zone Being involved in athletics has taught me to put others before myself and helped me learn to work with all different types of people while striving toward a common goal.

Elementary education Pella, Iowa

A three-year starter on Northwestern’s tennis team, Kellie was named an all-conference player twice in doubles and once in singles. She has a 24-26 singles and 24-23 doubles record. In addition to her education major, Kellie is working on reading and special education endorsements.

Advantage in I’ve become a well-rounded student-athlete through playing tennis. I’ve learned about teamwork and sacrifice—things I’ll be able to take and apply to my teaching.

Love all The tennis team went to California during spring break, where we helped at a school for under-privileged children. Some of us assisted kids in the classroom, while others worked on the grounds and played with the kids during recess.

It was great to be able to show them the love of Christ.
