EARLY EDUCATION
Early education provides a critical step for both children and parents, introducing the school place and educational ideas in a developmentally appropriate environment. The flexible early education programs at NCS provide families with options to fit children at all levels of readiness for schooling.
Mini Crusaders
Preschool
A first school experience for young children, Mini Crusaders provides structured care for infants and toddlers in a Christ-centered environment. MC is ideal for parents who want to introduce their children to a scheduled program of education among their peers, and frequency of attendance can be customized for each child. Children with experience in MC are well equipped to enter preschool. A typical day includes:
NCS Preschool is a safe, loving place in which a child can begin to learn in earnest. Students are given encouragement based on their abilities and accomplishments, as well as freedom to solve problems and observe the results of their decisions and develop critical thinking skills.
• Art and science exploration • Lunch and nap time • Manipulative exploration • Outside play and buggy walks • Snack and group time • Thematic play
All of the loving preschool staff are experienced and trained as well as qualified through DPS background check and fingerprinting. They take great joy in assisting young students in early reading, art, technology, math, and social concepts. They also provide an open environment for students to experience group relationships, preparing children for future educational experiences. Preschool is offered for 3 year olds through PreK. Two, three, and five day programs are offered in order to allow maximum flexibility for each family.
ELEMENTARY EDUCATION NCS offers an academically rich and rigorous program for students in grades K – 5. The curriculum offers foundational strength in phonics with Orton Gillingham leading to competency and fluency in reading throughout the grade levels. The mathematics program aligns with Stanford 10 and ACT Aspire standards providing day to day application and proficiency with math functions. Write From the Beginning has provided a foundational system for the writing process with opportunities to write daily. Science and Social Studies are taught throughout the year as students get to see God’s hand in creation and history. Children study the Bible every day as teachers provide opportunities to talk about a Christian worldview and biblical integration in every content area. Chapel is a highlight each week as students, teachers and guests focus on character development and spiritual formation as they worship and learn together. Qualified students are invited to participate in the National Elementary Honor Society which recognizes academic achievement and character. Additionally there are weekly classes in technology, music, library science and internet safety, Spanish, art and physical education. 3rd grade families are invited to participate in an annual science trip to San Diego. 5th graders may participate in beginning band, experience an outdoor education camp and learn economics through Biztown with Junior Achievement. Technology integration increases each year in the elementary program. Each classroom is equipped with computers for student research, skill development and content application in math, reading, science and social studies. Accelerated Reading as well as IXL and VMath provide integration curriculum programs for students to get reinforcement and challenge in reading and math. Ipads, projectors, document cameras, digital microscopes and transponders are used regularly throughout the elementary program to enhance learning.

impact CAPTURE
Northwest Christian School guides students to develop critical thinking skills with the potential to become difference makers who impact change in their community and the larger world. NCS provides a biblically-based atmosphere, fostering a Christian worldview which prepares students for godly roles in home, church, country, and the world. Students participate in weekly chapel, with a student led worship team and engaging speakers. Starting in Preschool, students have the opportunity to serve the community in small but mighty ways, developing an early understanding of what it means to offer Him our best with joyful hearts. Elementary grades each take on an organization as their Service Learning Partner for the year, and Middle School students participate in several service projects throughout the year. High School students are involved in a quarterly service project where they go out and serve while being examples of Christ.
Every spring, Northwest students perform in a musical, play production, or a talent show. Both middle school and high school students may also take band and/or choir as an elective and perform in concerts, both at Northwest and in competition with other schools. Another elective that may be chosen is a yearbook class. Students are responsible for photographing Northwest functions and assembling the current yearbook. There is always something exciting going on at Northwest, whether it’s a sporting event, Rodeo Day for the preschoolers, or an all school pep assembly. Northwest is full of extracurricular activities that go on throughout the week and bring students together.

Testing times: December through May are 3:30pm. Testing June-August is 9:00am. $30 online testing fee per student required. Testing between Sept. and Nov. is handled on an individual basis, as space permits. K-5 Online students take an online placement test via a portal link and do NOT need to attend in-person, group testing. *NCS has more qualified applicants each year than openings in most grades and cannot guarantee enrollment or waitlist position by date of application. NCS considers many factors when accepting new students including: church/community involvement, written parent testimony, doctrinal/parent agreement, academic records, prior teacher and NCS faculty recommendations, family size, alumni status, sibling enrollment status, NCS employee status, application completeness, family interview, placement testing, classroom space, student conduct, and attendance records. Qualified students that remain on the waitlist in August may have an opportunity to enroll during the school year should an opening occur. Waitlisted applications are not automatically carried over into the following school year and must be renewed in January by sending a written request to: Michelle Reddy, Director of Admissions, mreddy@ncsaz.org. A prior year waitlist status does not guarantee enrollment the following year. Students with D/F grades on a recent report card or conduct infractions may need to wait one full year to become eligible for enrollment. Students with IEP/504 plans should upload a copy into the enrollment portal for an NCS Principal to review before applying to the school. TO REQUEST INFORMATION, SCHEDULE A CAMPUS TOUR OR TO SUBMIT A NEW STUDENT APPLICATION: Go to www.ncsaz.org, select “Admissions” and then either “Apply Now” or “Get Info/Inquire Now”. Online inquiries and applicants will be sent an email with a link to schedule a campus tour and will also be assigned an enrollment portal within two business days. The enrollment portal will include an enrollment checklist that lists the required document uploads, digital recommendation links, and admission event registration links.

Calculating the GPA: The formula Northwest Christian School uses to calculate the cumulative GPA is based on equating percentages with a quality point. The quality points used by NCS are: Grading Scale 98 – 100 93 – 97 93-100 90 – 92 87 – 89 83 – 86 80 – 82
Quality Points 4.33 (prior to class of 2019) 4.00 (prior to class of 2019) 4.00 3.67 3.33 3.00 2.67
Grading Scale 77 – 79 73 – 76 70 – 72 67 – 69 63 – 66 60 – 62 0 – 59
Quality Points 2.33 2.00 1.67 1.33 1.00 0.67 0.00
*The graduating class of 2019 and beyond will only go up to 4.0 (5.0 for honors). A= 93-100 worth 4.0 points, everything else remains the same. To calculate the GPA, the semester grade for each class is equated to one of the above quality points. The additional quality point for a 5.33 class (5.0 for 2019 and beyond) is added after all quality points have been totaled. The total quality points are divided by the number of classes that have been taken for credit. The final result is the GPA (grade point average). At the end of each semester, the GPA is recalculated for the cumulative grade point average.

DIBELS are comprised of seven screening measures that are indicators of phonemic awareness, alphabetic understanding, accuracy and fluency with reading, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. DIBELS were designed for use in identifying children who experience difficulty learning these basic early literacy skills and to provide support early on so that later reading difficulties will not occur.

WAYS YOU CAN AFFORD A CHRISTIAN EDUCATION 2021-2022 PRIVATE SCHOOL TUITION TAX CREDITS (Individual and Switcher Programs) An Arizona resident for 2021, may donate up to $2,435 (for married taxpayers filing a joint tax return) or $1,219 (for single taxpayers and married couples filing separately) to a private school tuition tax credit organization or STO (up to their Arizona State tax liability). Many STO’s allow donors to recommend a student for STO consideration of an award by listing a student name and anticipated school on the application. Donors can take a dollar-for-dollar tax credit on their Arizona state tax return for that tax year. All donations must be received before April 15th in order to receive a tax credit for the previous year. You cannot recommend your own child, and you must re-apply every year by the organization’s stated deadline. The guidelines and prerequisites of awards are based on several factors. Review the “STO Tax Credits At A Glance” handout to determine your eligibility. It may be possible for both new and current NCS families to qualify for “switcher” funding (also known as PLUS or Overflow) in certain circumstances. Additional verification paperwork may be required to verify eligibility for “switcher” funding. Out of state donors are welcome to make a donation to an STO, but they will not receive a tax credit. Although there are 80+ individual Arizona tax credit organizations in Arizona, NCS works with a specific group of STO’s and the list changes annually. Each STO has their own timeline and application process. Families seeking tuition assistance may apply to more than one organization. Several are listed below. For more information, applications, donor & verification forms and frequently asked question links, go to: www.azto.org Arizona Tuition Organization www.acsto.org Arizona Christian School Tuition Organization www.arizonatuitionconnection.com Arizona Tuition Connection www.ibescholarships.org Institute for Better Education www.apesf.org Arizona Private Education Scholarship Fund, Inc. www.pstf123.org Private School Tuition Fund 123 www.sto4kidz.org School Tuition Organization 4 Kidz www.newhopescholarships.org, New Hope Scholarship Foundation NOTE: As of August, 2021, qualifications for previously homeschooled, out of State families, and prior ESA recipients have changed. Please contact the admissions office for more information.
CORPORATE TAX DOLLARS (Low Income Student Program) Families may apply for corporate tax dollars if your student is entering kindergarten at NCS or is a 1st-12th grade student transferring to NCS from an AZ school (public, charter, or Arizona funded on-line program), or is a child of an active military guardian, or received a prior corporate or individual tax credit scholarship in the prior school year while being continually enrolled at a private school. Your income must not exceed 185% of the income limit to qualify a child for reduced lunches under the National School Lunch and School Act (see chart on reverse; right hand column). The majority of Arizona families, approximately 58%, qualify by income for this program. Applying early is advantageous as most applications are due in mid-late spring prior to the school year that begins in August. NCS families who are connected with an Arizona C-Corp. or S-Corp. are invited to learn more about making a corporate tax credit donation. There are 80+ Arizona Tax Credit Organizations that process corporate tuition scholarships and families are encouraged to seek out the various organizations below to learn more about corporate scholarship opportunities. Current NCS families that meet the financial “means test” AND receive a corporate scholarship, may become eligible for Switcher/Overflow/PLUS individual tax credits in the following school-year. Current NCS families that have received a prior tuition assistance award in any current year, and have been consistently enrolled in an AZ private school, may qualify for corporate tuition assistance if income meets the income guidelines. For more information, income limit charts, verification forms and new and renewal applications and deadlines go to: www.azto.org Arizona Tuition Organization www.arizonaleader.org Arizona Leadership Foundation www.arizonatuitionconnection.com Arizona Tuition Connection www.schoolchoicearizona.org School Choice Arizona www.aaascholarships.org AAA (NOTE: lower income limits; can’t combine awards) www.pstf123.org Private School Tuition Fund 123
DISPLACED OR DISABLED STUDENT, CORPORATE TAX CREDIT (Lexie’s Law”) If your child has a special need or was a ward of the State at any time, and was adopted out of the State system, you may be eligible for awards. Contact APESF: www.apesf.org or ALF: www.arizonaleader.org
EARLY EDUCATION/PRESCHOOL (ages 1-5) Private School Tax credits are for K-12 students only. Arizona offers several scholarship programs for early education/child care for low-income families. Funds are limited. www.azftfscholarships.org (Quality First Scholarships), parent helpline: 602-240-6324, or call NCS Early Ed Center Educate the 48th, 602-935-7955 (for Early Ed tuition, ages 1-5, and before and after care thru elementary school) AZ ESA, see info. below, 602-364-1969 (Preschoolers w/an IEP/504/MET/Foster Care or an NCS sibling on ESA in K-12)
KINDERGARTEN - Tax credits may be “banked” for an upcoming kindergarten student up to 8-12 months prior to the start of kindergarten, depending on the policies of the STO. There are more scholarship opportunities for incoming kindergarten students than at any other point. Receiving a tuition assistance award in ANY amount during the kindergarten school year is critical in securing a “switcher” status through 12th grade and in gaining eligibility for low-income corporate scholarships in a future year. Scheduling a personal consultation with the NCS admissions department before March of your student’s PreK year is advised.
SHOP WITH SCRIP – SWS There is a one-time fee of $10 to register for this program at the main school office. Families shop on-line and choose from hundreds of gift cards with rebates of 1.5%-15%, depending on retailer. Based on historical data and other factors, SWS reports a national average rebate of 5%. On-line orders for gift cards are placed by Monday morning and are available for pick-up in the main office on Fridays. Many of the cards are reloadable making it more convenient for frequent users. There is also a “Scrip NOW” option that allows many gift cards to be ordered as e-gift cards that are available for immediate use by printing or scanning of your mobile device. Families use gift cards like cash at local stores, restaurants, and on-line websites. Rebates are applied twice per year to tuition accounts.
ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION “EMPOWERMENT SCHOLARSHIP ACCOUNT (ESA) This scholarship is designed for qualifying preschool through 12th grade students. (IEP/504/MET, former wards of the State/Foster Care, active military/hearing or vision-impaired parents/guardians, or D/F rated public school transfer, etc.) Recipients of the ESA cannot combine their award with any other type of tuition support, including tax credits.. To find out if your student qualifies and for application deadlines, visit: http://www.azed.gov/esa/ or call 602-364-1969
REFERRAL PROGRAM Current NCS families that refer a new family may be eligible to receive a $500 (new K-12 family) or $100 (new preschool family) referral tuition credit for each new family successfully referred and enrolled per confirmation from the financial department. The number of new families a current family can refer is unlimited. Qualifying referral tuition credits are applied to the referring family in the second semester of which the new family is enrolled. The finance department considers several qualifying factors when considering the authenticity of a new family referral.
TUITION ASSISTANCE WORKSHOPS & ONE-ON-ONE CONSULTATION APPOINTMENTS Tuition assistance updates and information is available through the NCS newsletter, the admissions or finance office and through NCS workshops. One-on-one tuition consultation appointments may be scheduled by phone or in-person. The next “How to Afford a Christian Education Workshops” are scheduled for 10/5/2021 and 1/13/2022. To sign-up for a one-on-one consultation or group workshop, go to www.calendly.com/ncsadmissions.

An approved application must be on file prior to the release of any tuition awards. • If your new 2021-2022 Kindergarten or Transfer student will be participating with donor recommendations prior to March 18th, please complete AZTO’s Pre-Application to register your student with AZTO. After March 18th, please complete the 2021-2022 AZTO Application to be approved for participation in the coming school year.
AZTO has allowed our children to attend the Christian school that we otherwise could not afford. We are so thankful that our students can receive a quality Christian education that best suits their needs and prepares them to lead a life for Christ!

How it Works • Once your student’s application has been approved by AZTO’s board for participation in the tax credit programs, you are ready to spread the word. • The tax credit law allows you to promote this program to benefit your student’s tuition to your network of family and friends, anyone who pays Arizona income taxes. • You can create a custom Student Landing Page on AZTO’s Student Portal that can be shared via social media or email. More resources, a recorded tax credit workshop, brochures, a promotion video, and a Facebook link may also be found at azto.org. • Arizona Individual taxpayers may make a recommended donation to AZTO suggesting your student for a tuition award. Donations are accepted online at azto.org or by mail with a Donation Form. • Once AZTO approves the recommended donation for your student, the award will be issued to the participating school at the next award cycle. Award details can be found in their Student Portal at azto.org.
Timeline for Award Cycles • Tuition Grants are defined as board approved tuition awards from donor recommendations. These awards are issued five times throughout the school year from the Individual Tuition Tax Credit Programs (Original & PLUS/Overflow). • Tuition Scholarships are heavily focused on financial need, program eligibility, and special circumstances. Current school year scholarships are issued twice a year: Corporate Credit in September and Individual Credits in February.
