When October arrives, North Wales takes on an almost cinematic beauty. And nowhere offers more beautiful autumnal walks than the area surrounding Betws-y-Coed. Nestled within the wooded valleys of Eryri, gentle riverside paths follow the tumbling waters of the River Llugwy, winding beneath ancient trees and past moss-covered rocks, tranquil pools and secluded woodland glades. At Swallow Falls, autumn brings an added sense of drama, with cascading water framed by richly coloured foliage. For a more immersive escape, the trails through Gwydir Forest offer a wonderful combination of woodland tranquillity and panoramic views across the Conwy Valley. For those who enjoy exploring on foot, this is an exceptional season to discover the North Walian landscape…

Landscape photography by Dominic Vacher High Street, Barmouth, LL42 1DS 01341 470118 verdunhouse.co.uk

State of the art As the nights begin to draw in and the weather takes a turn for the worse, there is no better time to have a gentle meander around a local art gallery. Here are some of our favourites to enjoy this autumn…

Verdun House Gallery

When photographer Dominic Vacher moved from Brighton to Barmouth with his wife, Lena, in late 2019, he hoped for more time to photograph the landscape that had caught his imagination. What followed was a full-time occupation, the restoration of a gallery and countless occasions when a sudden change in the light meant grabbing a camera and heading straight out of the door. It is easy to understand why. In Barmouth, a walk can take you from the high street to the harbour, along the beach or high into the hills. Across the Mawddach estuary, mountains rise behind a landscape constantly transformed by tides, weather and seasons. Even a familiar route rarely looks quite the same twice. Living there means Dominic can be ready for the moments a short visit might miss: snow settling over the harbour, lightning breaking across the sky, or a train crossing Barmouth Bridge just as the evening light falls into place. His photographs are the result of watching, waiting and, very often, simply being there. There are no replacement skies or AI-generated landscapes. Barmouth supplies the material; Dominic brings his eye, patience and knowledge of the area. His aim is to preserve the light and atmosphere he experienced and share something of what keeps drawing him back. The gallery has its own story. Housed in a nineteenth-century stone building on the high street, Verdun House was lovingly restored by Dominic and Lena during lockdown. Today it is both their home and the place where they work, with almost every stage of producing the finished photographs taking place under the same roof. Apart from the very largest pieces, the photographs are printed, framed and finished at Verdun House. Carefully chosen papers, high-quality materials and anti-reflective glass are all part of creating a premium product designed not only to look beautiful, but to last. The collection has also inspired Dominic and Lena’s first Barmouth Calendar for 2027, bringing together views of the town and surrounding landscape through the seasons. For visitors, Verdun House offers both a gallery and a starting point. Browse Dominic’s photographs, recognise a favourite view or discover somewhere new, then step outside to explore it for yourself. www.verdunhouse.co.uk

Ruthin Craft Centre

During the autumn and winter Ruthin Craft Centre will display a range of exhibitions in its galleries. From other lands celebrates the talented makers living and working across Wales who were born in other countries. Stories we tell showcases seven window displays created by seven makers. TonRaum is a collaborative project between ceramicist Claudia Lis and composer/sound designer Barry Edwards. The CELF exhibition An Unquiet Conversation will display the works of Graham Sutherland and Lisa Carter Grist, while the courtyard will have the exhibition Printmakers in Focus: Dela Anderson & Jasmine Violet and a Ceramic Portal by Lottie Venn. These are all on display until Sunday 10th January 2027. Meanwhile the retail gallery will feature a showcase by glassmaker Hannah Gibson, and Ruthin Craft Centre will also have a large selection of contemporary craft from Wales and beyond including ceramics, jewellery, glass and textiles. www.ruthincraftcentre.org.uk

The Oriel Beth Horrocks Gallery

Set on Caernarfon’s historic Cei Llechi slate quay, part of an ambitious £5.9 million heritage regeneration project, The Oriel Beth Horrocks Gallery is a captivating destination for art lovers this autumn. Step inside to discover a vibrant collection of contemporary Welsh landscapes by acclaimed artist Beth Horrocks, whose work is renowned for its uplifting use of colour, expressive brushwork and playful mark-making. Spanning more than 150m², the award-winning industrial-modern gallery provides an inspiring setting, complemented by spectacular views across the Menai Strait towards Caernarfon Castle. Visitors can browse an extensive selection of original artwork and distinctive gifts, explore Beth’s working studio and, when she is there, meet the artist herself. Families are also welcomed with a dedicated Lego activity corner for younger visitors. Ideally positioned between the iconic Caernarfon Castle and the Welsh Highland Railway, the gallery forms part of the vibrant Cei Llechi artisan village, where independent studios, crafts and eateries create a lively cultural destination. www.bethhorrocks.com

Animation Performances at Ruthin Craft Centre

This autumn, Ruthin Craft Centre presents a fascinating series of animation performances exploring the connections between art, science, nature and conservation. Created through a collaboration between artist and animator Sean Harris, musician and composer Toby Hay, and scientist Professor Danielle Schreve, the programme forms part of Professor Schreve’s Nature of the Beast research project, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The programme begins with The Nature of the Beast on Wednesday 14th October, from 6.30–9pm, which is free to attend. Adar a Ni / Birds and Us follows on Thursday 15th October, 7–9pm, also free. On Friday 16th October, The Wolf Within, 6.45–9pm, offers animation with a difference, bringing together science, conservation and museum collections to explore the natural world and our changing relationship with it. The evening includes a panel discussion featuring Professor Danielle Schreve, Sean Harris, Toby Hay, James Hitchcock of Rewilding Britain and Rhun Jones of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley National Landscape. Tickets are £5. The programme concludes with Adar a Ni / Birds and Us on Saturday 17th October, 7–9pm, priced at £10. Live music and animation bring paper cut-out birds to life across the Ruthin Craft Centre courtyard, inspired by richly illustrated historic books from the National Library of Wales. The evening also features a discussion with historian Professor Mary Ann Constantine, exploring what birds can reveal about our changing relationship with nature. With further workshops and exhibitions taking place throughout autumn, there is plenty more to discover at Ruthin Craft Centre. www.ruthincraftcentre.org.uk Page 20 NWM 2026

our region’s lighthouses are located on and around Anglesey to signal the presence of treacherous rocks there and on nearby small islands. Not all lighthouses are lonely towers clinging to an islet getting shaken, yet not toppled, by unforgiving seas – most of those in North Wales are actually on land. The lighthouse on South Stack Rock connected to Holy Island (Ynys Gybi) by a metal footbridge is sited on a headland between the foghorn and auxiliary buildings. King Charles II was petitioned for permission to build a lighthouse there in 1665. He refused and it took until 1809 for one to be built. Though daylight provides some reassurance if fog doesn’t block the view, darkness hides rocks and shoals which wreck the unlucky. It’s no surprise then that the coastline is home to lighthouses whose beams cast their warning lights for miles into the darkness.

We have to look back to antiquity to find the origin of lighthouses when hilltop fires helped to guide ships into port. Built around 2,200 years ago, the Lighthouse of Alexandria in Egypt was one of the earliest purpose-built lights, and as it was over 330ft high it’s classed as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In Britain, authority over lighthouses has resided with Trinity House since 1836, but it was formed centuries before that in 1514 to regulate pilotage on London’s River Thames. Many of

Originally built to house pilots who from there boarded ships sailing into or out of Liverpool to guide them, the castellated building was extended in 1835 and a ground floor lamp room added, with a pilot’s lookout in the floor above. Then in the 1870s it was enlarged and refurbished. Typically a lighthouse lantern is at the top of a tower, but as the ground is more than 100ft above sea level it wasn’t necessary here. A SCARY TIME…

for wildlife!

Whether you’re getting ready for Halloween or preparing for Bonfire Night, North Wales Wildlife Trust have some top tips for a fun, not frightful, time! 1. Bring costumes back from the dead

A recent survey found that many Halloween costumes are made up of 90% plastic, yuk! Why not make your own, swap costumes with friends or family, rent an outfit or pick up something pre-loved from a charity shop instead? 2. Ditch the deadly

Decorations such as fake spiderwebs aren’t just scary for wildlife, they can be deadly too. When used outdoors they can entangle birds, bats, insects and other animals. Get crafty with plastic-free decorations instead. Try making paper ghosts, a Halloween wreath from twigs and leaves, or lanterns using old jam jars. 3. Dispose of pumpkins responsibly

Pumpkin can cause severe stomach upsets, dangerous dehydration, and even death for hedgehogs at a time when they need to put on weight to survive the winter. Rather than leave pumpkins on the ground, place them on a raised platform or dispose of them in your food waste bin or compost heap.

4. Leave your leaves

Fallen leaves create warm and safe shelters for frogs, toads, hedgehogs and other creatures. They also provide food for fungi and invertebrates that recycle the nutrients back into the soil. Consider leaving some leaves in your garden – a little untidiness can be great for wildlife! 5. Check your bonfire

Woodpiles are ideal shelters for hedgehogs and other small animals. If you’re building a fire, build it as close to the lighting time as possible and check carefully for wildlife. Light the fire from one side rather than the middle to give wildlife a chance to escape.

North Wales Wildlife Trust works to protect and restore nature across the region, and supports people of all ages to take action for nature where they live. For more ways to help wildlife and news on nature in North

Half term heroes

Get the kids out and about this October half term with these spectacular days out… Get on the water – whatever the weather

Most people think boat trips are a summer thing. The team at RibRide think you’re missing out… October on the Menai Strait is quietly spectacular. The summer rush has gone. The water is calmer. And the landscape? Stunning. Ancient geology millions of years in the making. Cliffs and islands that look even more dramatic under autumn skies. Then there’s the wildlife. Seals hauled out on rocks. Seabirds diving. The occasional dolphin making everyone’s day. None of them care about the forecast. Neither should you. The RibRide crew love this time of year. Fewer boats on the water. More time to explore. That crisp autumn air. And they know what you’re thinking… Won’t it be freezing? Nope. They’ve got an entire room dedicated to keeping you cosy. Waterproofs. Winter suits. Layers upon layers. You’ll be warm and dry. Probably warmer than you expected. RibRide has been doing this for over 20 years, and has won multiple awards and received thousands of five-star reviews. But don’t take their word for it, go and see for yourself. Summer gets all the attention. But autumn? Autumn is when the Strait shows off. www.ribride.co.uk

Go back in time

Great Orme Mines is the perfect place for a Halloween family adventure! Venture deep into the labyrinth of this worldfamous Bronze Age copper mine. Back above ground the shop is brimming with treasures, including Halloween inspired ones of onyx black cats and ravens, as well as eerie little ghosts carved from obsidian! But there’s an even spookier story hidden beneath the Great Orme. The nineteenth century miners who worked at the mine believed the underground was inhabited by supernatural spirits known as “Knockers”. Fortunately, there was no need to be afraid! The Knockers of Llandudno were said to be benevolent spirits, believed to knock on the rock to guide the miners towards the richest veins of copper ore! www.greatormemines.info

The resulting dark, swirling drink was said to resemble the storm clouds gathering over the Atlantic –inspiring its evocative name. Today, the Dark ’n Stormy is closely associated with Gosling’s Black Seal Rum, reflecting the cocktail’s enduring Bermudian heritage.

Renewable Energy Continues to Make Sense for Homeowners Over recent months, energy prices have once again become increasingly unpredictable, with significant rises in tariffs. This has made renewable energy technologies such as Solar PV and battery storage even more attractive for homeowners looking to reduce their energy bills and gain greater control over their energy use.

With electricity prices remaining high, many solar PV and battery storage installations are now achieving payback periods of between five and eight years, and in some cases even sooner. Alongside the financial benefits, homeowners can also reduce their carbon footprint and contribute towards a more sustainable future. Modern battery storage systems do far more than simply store excess electricity generated by solar panels. Many can also be charged using low-cost off-peak electricity tariffs, allowing homeowners to purchase electricity when prices are at their lowest and use it when prices are higher. This can significantly improve the return on investment and is particularly beneficial during the winter months when solar generation is reduced due to shorter daylight hours and seasonal weather conditions. Battery technology has also advanced considerably in recent years. Many systems can now provide backup power during a power cut, allowing essential appliances to continue operating and enabling homeowners to remain energy independent for longer periods. Princes LHS has been an approved installer of the marketleading Tesla Powerwall battery storage system for over 10 years, alongside other leading manufacturers including Sigenergy, Hannchu and Fox. Many of these systems are available to view at the Low Carbon Home Systems Renewable Energy Showroom in Ellesmere, where customers can see the technology operating in a real-world environment. There are also financial incentives available for homeowners who export excess electricity back to the grid. Through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), some energy suppliers are currently offering in excess of 13p per kWh for exported electricity. Eligibility for SEG payments requires the system to be installed by an MCS-accredited company, ensuring installations meet recognised industry standards. Heat Pumps – The Future of Home Heating As more homeowners look to move away from fossil fuels, heat pumps are becoming an increasingly popular heating solution. Powered by electricity, they work particularly well alongside solar PV systems, allowing homeowners to generate some of the energy required to heat their homes.

Why AI may not be the best place to turn for legal advice From planning holidays and writing emails to answering those random questions that crop up during the day, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming part of everyday life. But while asking AI for a restaurant recommendation is one thing, relying on it for legal advice could be a very different matter. Brian Evans, managing partner of Lanyon Bowdler

COULD YOUR PENSION CREATE AN UNEXPECTED INHERITANCE TAX BILL? With pension rules changing from April 2027 and Inheritance Tax receipts at record levels, more families may need to rethink their estate planning says Robert Lewis FPFS, managing director of Celtic Financial Planning…

Inheritance Tax is no longer a concern reserved for the very wealthy. HMRC collected a record £8.5 billion in 2025/26, and with the main tax-free allowances frozen until April 2031, rising property and investment values mean more families could find themselves within its reach. For many people, pensions have also formed an important part of estate planning. Under current rules, unused pension funds in many discretionary schemes can usually sit outside the estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. That is about to change. From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and pension death benefits will be included when calculating the value of someone’s estate for Inheritance Tax. Death in service

couple may be able to pass on up to £1 million before Inheritance Tax becomes payable. However, the residence allowance starts to taper once an estate exceeds £2 million. The danger is assuming that a financial plan which worked five years ago will still work in 2027. Someone with a valuable home, investments and a substantial pension may suddenly have a much larger taxable estate than they expected. Planning does not necessarily mean giving everything away. It starts with understanding your position. Reviewing wills and pension nominations, considering how and when assets are used, making sensible lifetime gifts where appropriate, and looking at protection or trust planning can all form part of a wider strategy. The right approach will depend on your circumstances and, crucially, on maintaining enough money for your own lifetime needs.
