Elsi the King Charles’ Cemaes Bay Circular walk, Anglesey
There is an abundance of walking routes along the coast of Anglesey, but perhaps most breathtaking of all is this cliff-top venture around Cemaes Bay. Elsi agrees that this walk offers both stunning views and the ‘wow’ factor – but remember to always keep your companion on a lead for this one. There is also plenty for humans to explore along the way – including the ruins of 19th Century ceramic works and fascinating historic sites such as Llanbadrig Church, one of the oldest Christian sites in Wales, which overlooks Cemaes Bay.

This accessible path is the perfect walk for any dog whose owner might be a pram or wheelchair user. The gentle walk offers a well-surfaced promenade, plus a flat and well-drained grassland for variety. Taking one to two hours to complete, you’ll head through Morfa Madryn Nature Reserve which offers excellent bird spotting opportunities for humans (and dogs – so do keep them on a tight lead at all times!) And with its stunning views across the Menai Strait, this route also allows your dog to dip their paws in the shallow waters along the way, if they (or you!) are feeling brave enough!

You and your four-legged friend will be spoilt for choice on this Llŷn Peninsula walk! Follow the coast along the beachfront or take the woodland route through the grounds of Plas Glyn y Weddw – meeting at the Trwyn Llanbedrog viewpoint, overlooking the sparkling waters of Cardigan Bay. Free Horse Health Clinics Reduce Need For Antibiotics Horse owners can once again access a series of free Equine Health Clinics as part of an award-winning Welsh programme that promotes the responsible use of antibiotics. The Arwain DGC (Defnydd Gwrthficrobaidd Cyfrifol / Responsible Antimicrobial Use) programme helps vets, farmers and horse owners address the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by reducing the need to use antibiotics. Responsible use of antibiotics is an integral part of both animal and human medicine to ensure the longevity of those antibiotics currently available. As part of its work, Arwain DGC devised the hugely popular 1-2-1 Equine Health Clinics – with the second tranche of clinics now open. Horses do not have to be ill or wounded to qualify for an Equine Health Clinic, and during the first phase of the project, over 200 horses were seen in clinics across Wales. Arwain DGC Equine Officer Marged Simons said: “The Equine clinics proved immensely useful to those that took advantage of the scheme, arming them with the tools and knowledge to avoid needing to use antibiotics. Or in cases where antibiotics were needed, they enabled the vet to select the correct antibiotic treatment.” Support of up to £200 is available for tailored advice on biosecurity and individualised health planning, and bacterial culture and sensitivity testing can also be funded if advised by a local vet following a clinical assessment. Funding is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a maximum of one clinic per equine owner, but the clinic can cover the advice and screening of more than one horse owned by that owner. “We can also offer group clinics on livery yards, targeting biosecurity, informative evenings for clubs and colleges, and online information via the Arwain DGC website,” continued Marged. “Arwain DGC funding can also supplement culture and sensitivity testing if your horse has a suspected infection. This ensures that if your horse does require antibiotics, your vet can be fully equipped with the information to prescribe the most effective class of antibiotics. “So, whether you are concerned about how to keep your horse safe through the competition season, wondering how best to treat those minor ailments your horse is insistent on picking up, or want to make sure you are supplying your horse with the nutrition it needs, our clinics can help.” n
KEEPING YOUR HORSE HEALTHY THIS WINTER Among common equine problems encountered during the winter is Pastern Dermatitis (Mud Fever). It is a bacterial skin infection, commonly around the lower legs, that can be very painful and often requires veterinary treatment. It is best to prevent the infection from starting at all, and if kept healthy, the skin acts as a very good natural barrier to bacteria found in the environment or on the surface of the horse’s skin. Barrier creams can be useful – but only if no infection is present – and take care to check legs regularly. Apply moisturisers or emollients regularly to prevent cracking of skin and inflammation. Often, Mud Fever creams act as a barrier and an emollient and can be helpful in prevention. Check your horse’s legs frequently and regularly allow them to dry. Protective boots can be useful, but if they are not a perfect fit, a small amount of mud can get underneath and rub the skin, allowing bacteria into the skin. Avoid over-washing legs as repeated wetting and drying of legs weaken their natural barriers to bacteria. However, if legs are sore, swollen or there is any discharge, a vet should be consulted. Other causes of scabby skin and inflammation on horses’ legs, which may require veterinary advice are Leg Mites, Photosensitisation, or a bacterial infection often deep into the skin such as bacterial folliculitis.

If just 1% of that was saved, it could be used to provide over 9 million meals – enough to provide three meals to every person in Wales. At the same time, nearly a quarter of the population of Wales is facing poverty and struggling to access quality, nutritious food. Thousands of people across the country are suffering food insecurity and regularly going hungry. (I can recommend a rather nice French country-style bistro in Deganwy if you’re struggling for ideas.) However, setting your own dining table with the posh linen, filling a vase with roses, preparing a ballad-heavy playlist and cooking a meal for two yourself demonstrates even more commitment and devotion to your significant other. You don’t want the mistake of over-complicating things, especially since its on a Wednesday this year and like as not you won’t be getting in from work until past six. Here then is the perfect dish for you, one that looks like you’ve put hours of effort into it, but which can actually be put together in minutes. Big Pool Wood, near Gronant, Prestatyn
This walk explores the North Wales Wildlife Trust’s Big Pool Wood Nature Reserve and the nearby sand dunes. The reserve is a fine example of wet woodland and reed bed with a board walk to help you explore and three bird hides to get up close to the local wildlife. With picnic tables and a circular walking route, the reserve is well worth a visit in its own right. The walk then takes you off the reserve towards the coast and joins the Wales Coast Path, on the way you may observe kingfisher, great spotted woodpecker and goldfinch. Things you need to know
The total length of the walk is 2.5 miles and will take up to two hours. Big Pool Wood can be boggy but has mainly good paths and a wooden boardwalk, it also has open water, so be careful with children. The Gronant path includes areas on the beach and dunes which can be rough and slippery when wet. Check tide tables to avoid very high tides. Directions

Sand lizards have also been introduced to the dunes in this area. Males are bright green in breeding season, but they are tricky to spot – the best chance is early in the morning as they bask in the sun. 6. Take the right-hand path and look for sea holly and plentiful orchids in June and July. Should you wish to extend your walk, you may turn right on the beach, re-joining the coastal path to eventually reach the RSPB’s Dee Estuary – Point of Ayr Nature Reserve (approximately 1.5 km away). 7. From the hide, in spring, watch for reed warblers darting to their nests amongst the reeds. In winter, look for teal and mallard in the open water. There has been evidence of otters hunting for frogs, toads and newts amongst the reed bed. Foxes are also

What clothes should the deceased be dressed in? In the delicate process of arranging a funeral, every detail is carefully considered, including what the person that has died might wear. If this is the first time you’ve had to organise a funeral, you may be unsure as to what is appropriate clothing for the deceased person to be dressed in and have a few questions.
What about hair and makeup? Knowing that the person looking after your mum, sister or Nan has seen a photo of them and knows how they liked their hair to be styled, that they preferred their makeup to be natural and maybe have a splash of nail varnish on occasion, will provide you with a lot of comfort. We wash and dress everyone in house, using a personalised blend of essential oils to nourish their skin. We don’t use any hygienic treatments or embalming except in rare cases. This is a personal choice. We would always encourage you to provide clothes that suit the person and to choose something you are used to seeing them in. You may choose something comfortable for the person to be laid to rest in, or something formal to celebrate a life well lived. However, if Dad was most comfortable in his jeans, shirt and a jumper or Mum loved her blouse and trouser combo, then we’d suggest choosing that over something less familiar and formal. Each person is unique and what they wear can and should reflect that.
