alhenbont Hall, which is located just two miles from Criccieth, is an absolute gem of a place to get married – so it’s no surprise that Louise and Simon Knight took exclusive use of the venue when they tied the knot on Saturday 11th May 2019. The wedding ceremony itself took place in the magnificent 17th Century Elizabethan Manor House, Cromwell Hall, which was built in 1607. The Hall is steeped in history, having been built in 1607 by Williams Vaughan as a wedding present for his new wife Ann Vaughan. The Hall was also used as a garrison for Oliver Cromwell’s officers and soldiers. Following the ceremony, Louise and Simon’s wedding breakfast and evening reception both took place in the stunning, newly renovated Coach House. This fantastic building, which can seat up to 150 guests, has recently been renovated by local building firm RL Davies – and now combines the original features with glamorous chandeliers and a purpose built bar, which was designed and installed by owner Paul Good. The bar uses wood from the estate and features a statement zinc bar top.

And, as if the venue wasn’t stunning enough, both the Hall and Coach House were beautifully dressed for the occasion by award winning florists, Springbank Flowers. A delicate colour palette was chosen by the couple, while lots of candles and beautiful centre pieces were also provided by Springbank, along with an ornate top table arrangement.
ACCOMMODATION IS PROVIDED ONSITE FOR 42 GUESTS IN THE MAIN HALL (SLEEPS 10) AND FIVE COTTAGES WHICH ARE SITUATED ON THE ESTATE.
“What an amazing and beautiful weekend we have had at Talhenbont Hall for our wedding day,” said Louise, who stole the show in her breathtaking wedding gown designed by Justin Alexander. “I can’t recommend this venue enough. From the moment we arrived we felt so, so special in this beautiful setting. From the gorgeous and homely cottages, to the grand and beautiful hall and wonderful grounds. It is just truly stunning – plus we were super lucky with the weather to enable us all to enjoy everything Talhenbont has to offer.” The couple enjoyed a barbeque with family and friends on the evening before the wedding and feasted on a breakfast the day after, ensuring that they made the most of the entire time that they had the estate to themselves. Louise and Simon’s family and friends relaxed the day after the ceremony on the lawns of the estate, before driving to Morfa Nefyn for some leisurely time at the beach. “We wanted a beautiful and relaxed day and weekend, and we had this in bundles,” concludes Simon. “What made it so special was Alicia and Paul who worked effortlessly to make our day perfect. We can’t thank them enough – and all of the suppliers who made our day so amazing. I can’t recommend Talhenbont Hall enough as a wedding venue, and we will certainly be back to stay as a married couple.” n

Well, the “something old” represents the bride’s past, while “something new” signifies the couple’s future. “Something borrowed” symbolizes borrowed happiness, while “something blue” stands for fidelity and love.

Rain on your wedding day While many couples dread rain on their big day (especially if they have planned an outdoor ceremony!) there are numerous reasons to believe that rain is actually good luck. One reason is because it signifies that your marriage will last the test of time – the theory being that a wet knot is extremely hard to untie, so rain on the day that you ‘tie the knot’ can only be a good thing.
The veil Again this tradition harks back to when the groom hadn’t seen the bride prior to the ceremony. The veil wasn’t lifted until after vows had been exchanged, meaning that it was too late for the groom to change his mind if he didn’t like what he saw!

Seeing each other before your big day This tradition dates back to the time of arranged marriages, when people believed that if the couple saw each other before the ceremony, it would give them a chance to change their minds about the wedding… Today many people actually choose to have breakfast together on their big day – it will probably the only time that you get to spend alone!
Throwing the bouquet In medieval times it was considered good luck to touch the bride – and even better luck to grab a piece of her wedding dress or veil. So in order to avoid being physically grabbed at, brides began throwing their bouquets to distract their guests and make them chase after the flowers, instead of her and her gown. The flowers were still believed to bring romantic luck for the future, and now mean that whoever manages to catch it is next in line to tie the knot.
Cutting the cake
Knives as a wedding gift Throwing confetti The tradition of throwing confetti over the bride and groom comes from Italy. Before paper confetti, flowers, petals, grain or rice were thrown at the happy couple to encourage prosperity and fertility. Today confetti comes in all shapes and sizes, but natural petals remain the most venue-friendly!
Going on a honeymoon
According to folklore, a knife signifies a broken relationship and is bad luck to give as a wedding gift. If knives are on your gift list, then you need to give the guest a penny – that way it’s a purchase, not a present
The tradition of a wedding cake comes from ancient Rome, where revellers broke a loaf of bread over a bride’s head for fertility’s sake. Today, the cake is cut together as a symbol of unity
Carrying the bride over the threshold There are actually numerous theories for this one… In Medieval Europe, if the groom carried the bride over the threshold then she avoided looking too eager about consummating the marriage. Meanwhile Western Europeans believed that a bride who tripped over the threshold of her new home would bring bad luck to her home and her marriage – so being carried was one way to avoid the mishap. However, ancient cultures believed that a bride was extra vulnerable to evil spirits through the soles of her feet. To avoid bringing in any evil spirits, the groom carried the bride into their new home. n
“Honeymoon” didn’t always refer to a romantic getaway… In the 5th Century newlywed couples would drink mead, a honey-based alcohol, after their first “moon” together as a married couple. W
wedding photographer, someone who could record the entire day and all of our precious moments for both of our families. We fell in love with Martin Vaughan Photography’s pictures the minute we saw them, and boy they didn’t disappoint!
We absolutely loved the “Castle Suite” – which would be the main wedding function room – for it’s breath taking views of the estuary, the mountains and, of course, Conwy Castle. We knew our guests would enjoy looking out while they waited for me to make my big entrance, and also as we enjoyed the wedding breakfast. We could also visualize having reception drinks on the terrace in the sunshine with all of our family and friends.
On the morning of the wedding itself I had a penthouse suite at the Quay for myself and my bridal party, where we were joined by the hairdresser Sian Jackson, from Llandudno and the makeup artist Cara Slater from Penrhyndeudraeth. The morning was filled with laughter and fun and the sun shone brightly. The bridal suite had the doors open onto the balcony and we could watch the boats sail past as we drank Prosecco and prepared for the big day. And of course our own precious little girl Cira, the flower girl, could sit and play.
We had no particular theme to the wedding, although if there was one it would be “family”. We love all of our family and friends so much and we wanted a true Welsh celebration with them. As a result, we tried hard to think of their enjoyment and comfort throughout –hence there was no travelling from ceremony to reception as it was all in the same place for ease and luxury.
I had found my incredible dress in a shop called Gwisgfa in Pentraeth [Angelsey], where the lady went above and beyond to help me find a fairytale gown. It had a diamond encrusted strapless bodice with the most wonderful voluminous tulle skirt. The three bridesmaids’ dresses came from Altrincham, and the younger girls got theirs from Wedding Belles in Llandudno, all in complementing shades of blush pink.
hen we decided to get married the very first thing we chose was our wedding venue: The Quay Hotel and Spa in Deganwy, North Wales. I had fallen in love with it when visiting for lunch with my mum Karen. Then later, when I heard they were holding a wedding fair, I decided to return with Dyfan to check it out.
Possibly the most important thing to us was finding our

great moments of the day was walking into the room where my bridesmaids and Taid Huw (Taid is Welsh for granddad) were waiting for the first glimpse of me. Everyone cried and laughed and it was a magical experience. I couldn’t wait to see my handsome groom and his groomsmen dressed in their elegant navy suits with blush pink cravats, all of which they had hired from Debenhams. The most memorable moment of the day for me was when Dyfan saw me wearing my wedding dress for the first time. His face was priceless. After the ceremony – where in true style we danced down the aisle with our little girl Cira – the drinks were flowing on the

terrace and everyone chatted and basked in the sunshine. The family were all so happy and the staff were all so helpful and lovely, nothing was to much trouble for them. While having family photos taken and enjoying the fun and laughter of the drinks reception we had a massive surprise: the mountain rescue helicopter swooped in off the estuary and circled a few times so that they could wave and offer their congratulations. When we went up to the wedding breakfast we couldn’t believe how beautiful everything looked. There was a real

“wow” factor to the room particularly with the view of the estuary behind it. The flowers designed by local florist Scent with Love (Llandudno) were in dusky pink and champagne: there were white Veronicas, white wax flowers, white phlox, pink lisianthus, pink avalanche rose’s, pink astilbe and pink bovardia, pittasporum and eucalyptus foliage. The transformation of the room – combined once more with the family touch: my cousin and bridesmaid had created all of the stationary – made it the perfect for our first meal together as a married couple. Hence the term “wedding breakfast”, even though it we ate it in the afternoon! The guests were treated to a three course meal: Leek & potato soup, fried potato skins and crème fraiche to start; Ballontine of chicken, pressed potato and savoy cabbage, with a red wine sauce for the main; and then a dessert of fresh fruit pavlova and Chantilly cream with a mixed berry compote. All of the guests really enjoyed it, along with the plentiful wine served on each table! Again the family came into their own as my Auntie Delyth
had worked wonders in making the cake as a wedding gift. It was five tiers tall and ornamented with cascading roses. It tasted absolutely delicious. Following the meal, and before any of our evening guests arrived, we left the Quay briefly with Martin and Debbie from Martin Vaughan Photography to make good use of our incredible location. We visited Mussel Beach and Conwy Castle to take some romantic and dramatic shots. Pictures that we cannot stop looking at to this day, we are so blown away by them. For us, the night ‘do’ was always a very important element of the day – we really wanted everyone to party and have a great time. Consequently, we employed a local company called Event Lounge who provided us with a photo-booth, which our guests loved and made us all laugh so much. They also brought along a “fun casino” and my absolute favourite thing: a glittery white dance floor on which we did our first
dance to a song my uncle Bedwyr wrote and performed himself. I truly felt like a Disney princess. The day was everything we had hoped and imagined – and more. Thanks go to all our family and friends who came to celebrate with us, and to the Quay who were incredible, especially the wedding planner who gave us constant help and support throughout the planning process. Thanks also to all the others that contributed to our day, you were wonderful. We only have one wish left and that is that we could do it every year for the rest of our lives… n

Most of the kids won’t even know what a Polaroid camera is – just wait until they see how much fun they can be! Get creative. Provide an assortment of pens, crayons and paper on a low table and ask the children to do their best drawings of the wedding, the venue and the guests. You can also dedicate a corner of the table to creating confetti to use later in the day!
Provide a fancy dress box. Even if you just put out a box of silly hats, over-size glasses, feather boas and scarves you’re providing them with hours of entertainment
Dig deep. It’s easy to create an instant sand pit that won’t damage the lawn. An inflatable paddling pool will set you back less than a tenner. Add several bags of play sand, buckets, spades and a few plastic shapes and bingo – happy kids for hours and hours!
Set aside a corner of the garden just for kids. A brightly coloured kid-size gazebo is a great idea for sunny days. Fill it with picnic blankets, cushions, comics and books. Outside the gazebo you can lay out Giant Jenga bricks, ready for building. It’s always a crowd-pleaser!
Don’t forget the kids at dinnertime. It might be worth talking to your venue about seating the children together, at their own special table. If your menu is particularly grown-up then an alternative kids menu would not only be appreciated, but could save you money…
Get a bouncy castle – you won’t regret it. Just keep away the groom and bridesmaids if they’ve been on the fizz!
Call in the professionals. If you really have a lot of kids coming, it might be worth the outlay to hire a professional entertainer. A magician or face-painter will appeal across the ages. Get the magic show to start as the speeches commence to guarantee two hours of peace and quiet… And finally, enjoy your young guests. It’s your wedding, but they will also remember it fondly for years to come.

Bodrhyddan Hall Bodrhyddan Hall is a Grade I listed stately home between Dyserth and Rhuddlan in Denbighshire. The house was originally built in the 1500’s with notable Victorian additions. We boast several acres of impressive grounds and gardens, ponds and woodland, as well as an extensive must-see historical collection which even includes an Egyptian mummy! There are stories behind everything in the hall which is open to the public on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from June to September. This year we have welcomed visitors from across the world who have had their personal guided tour of the house and gardens with our resident experts! Bodrhyddan Hall has had a wonderful summer filled with events, showcases and weddings. Our Classic Car Show in August saw over 700 classic cars displayed. This family friendly event with children’s activities, quality food and a motor themed sale saw an excellent turnout. The season started brilliantly with our first ever No Man’s Land event. We hosted around 250 World War 1 & 2 re-enactors at Bodrhyddan as well as over one thousand visitors on a spring weekend in April. Visitors were absolutely thrilled by the entertaining and educational theme of the weekend. With that said, we are pleased to announce that No Man’s Land will be returning to Bodrhyddan on 18th 19th April 2020. This year’s edition of our annual Plant Fayre which was our 18th consecutive year, saw record crowds explore the grounds, gardens and over 40 stalls selling all manner of interesting plant species. From exotic specimens to garden machinery, local honey to artisan cheese, the 2019 Plant
Fayre yet again benefited from stunning weather and was enjoyed by all. We have especially enjoyed welcoming our brides and grooms from the local area and beyond to Bodrhyddan this wedding season, with one couple even coming as far as Dubai to make their vows in the gardens. We very much look forward to seeing our future married couples who have booked their weddings with us next year! As well as updating our outdoor sound system to the latest technology this year, we have also designed a few wedding packages to make the whole process of planning a wedding a little smoother. 2020 brings some exciting developments for the Bodrhyddan Wedding Experience as well as many memorable events for families to enjoy so please do keep an eye out on our Facebook and Instagram pages for more updates! n
