NORTH VANCOUVER COMMUNITY ARTS COUNCIL The purpose of the North Vancouver Community Arts Council is to enable emerging and professional artists in all disciplines, to bridge cultures, and to build strong and healthy communities through the arts.

From March 23 to June 22, 2020 CityScape Community ArtSpace was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff continued to work from home and re-imagined new programming to respond to the pandemic, continuing to fulfill the mandate. Throughout this report, the symbol at the left is included to indicate where programming was re-imagined and pivoted.

MESSAGE FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR This past year has been one of extreme highs and lows, from our 50th Anniversary celebrations to the impact of COVID-19 and the effect the pandemic has had on our regular programmes. The good news is we are nimbly and responsively riding the wave so we can continue to support, innovate, and connect our community through these challenging times.

For most of the year we rolled-out our regular programmes with details highlighted in this report. In March, due to COVID-19, we closed CityScape to the public for 3 months. We moved our exhibitions, arts education, and the Art in the Garden event online, continuing to engage our community creatively to counteract the effects of social isolation and anxiety and support artists. Our art rental programme ran throughout the closures with many people choosing to buy their rented artwork. The one programme we have not been able to continue for now is our Film Series, as we not only had to cancel screenings due to COVID but our venue closed permanently. We are looking for a new home and will bring the TIFF series back when it is safe to gather.

On March 12, we launched the North Shore Culture Compass, a project three years in the making that identifies the cultural assets on the North Shore, including the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, and presents them on an interactive GIS-based map accessible to all. A huge thanks to the amazing team who helped make this vision a reality. The project launched days before the world shut down and the Culture Compass has proven to be a valuable resource to engage and connect people despite pandemic restrictions! Thanks to a three-year Canada Council Digital Fund grant, we retained our core project team to run and expand the tool to help educate and engage our community for years to come.

I want to say a huge thank you to our talented staff for their creative solutions that allowed us to continue to deliver our programmes. They didn’t miss a beat, rolling up their sleeves and learning new skills, supporting each other, and creating innovative engaging content that has successfully maintained, and in some cases, expanded our connections and reach. A special thanks to Don Rutherford, our Board Chair, for standing beside me through the wild ride of COVID upheaval and decision making.

I’ve been inspired by the resiliency and compassion I have witnessed throughout these unprecedented times. A huge thank you to all our members, artists, donors, funders, sponsors, volunteers, Board of Directors, partners, and staff for all you have done to help our organization continue to innovate and connect. I truly look forward to the moment we can all gather again to celebrate our beautiful community. Be well, stay safe.

50th ANNIVERSARY 50 July 26 - September 7 Opening Celebration & Exhibition: Thursday, July 25 We launched our 50th Anniversary season with an exhibition looking at significant events, experiences, and influences that have shaped the culture of North Vancouver and beyond.

Intertwined with the history and reflections offered by the artists, was the story of North Van Arts’ 50 years. As the North Shore has developed, North Van Arts has been committed to advocating for the importance of art in building community. Taking art beyond gallery walls, North Van Arts has worked to make art and culture an accessible and foundational aspect of the North Shore. In conversation with the artists’ work, North Van Arts explores its ongoing dedication to enabling emerging artists and advocating for the recognition of underrepresented stories through the arts.

Thank you to the North Vancouver Museum & Archives for their generous support to North Van Arts and the artists in this exhibition.

50th Anniversary Video Reflects on the impact our organization has had on our community over the past five decades. In building this video it was wonderful to spend time digging into the archives and interviewing important people who influenced the arc of this organization and our community.

The 50th Anniversary Film was created with the help of students of the Capilano University School of Motion Picture Arts - Documentary Film Program: Jack Silberman, Instructor, Documentary Program, Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts Director/Interviewer: Jacob Townsend, Camera: Kwesi Trotman, Sound Recordist: Justine Beaulieu Poudrier A huge thanks to Katherine Gear Chambers for research and transcripts and to Editor Tamar Kozlov for pulling all the elements together. CITYSCAPE COMMUNITY ARTSPACE - EXHIBITIONS North Van Arts has operated this City-owned facility since 2001, featuring group-based, themed exhibitions. The mission of CityScape Community ArtSpace is “to celebrate and promote art and artists through quality experiences in a unique and inviting gallery space, and to create an inclusive environment which enriches and encourages interaction in the community”.

50 July 26 – September 7 Exhibition Opening: Thursday, July 25 Creativescape: Stitched Photo Collage with Amelia Guimarin, September 5 Celebrating 50 years of North Van Arts as well as art and community in North Vancouver. Exhibiting artists Alexandra Phillips, Amelia Guimarin, Amy Liebenberg, Bev Ellis, Biliana Velkova, Grace Gordon-Collins, Mehran Modarres-Sadeghi, and Taehoon Kim considered significant events, experiences, and influences that have helped shape them as artists in North Vancouver and beyond.

Art Rental Show September 20 – October 12 A semi-annual salon-style exhibition of artworks from the Art Rental collection. All artwork was available for rent and sale right off the gallery walls!

Pushing Boundaries October 10 – November 16 Exhibition Opening: Thursday, October 9 This biennial group exhibition showcased and celebrated contemporary Indigenous artists.

Indigenous cultures across North America use blankets in symbolic ways throughout their communities. These artists referenced the narratives rooted in their own nations and relate them back to pattern, textile, shape, form, or material. The blanket metaphor represents a way that we can use the deep connections of spirit while pushing a contemporary perspective on Indigenous ways of knowing.

CITYSCAPE COMMUNITY ARTSPACE - EXHIBITIONS Anonymous Art Show November 22 – December 18 Preview Week: November 22 - 26 Opening Reception and Sale Extravaganza: Thursday, November 28 The 15th Annual Anonymous Art Show featured over 600 works of art by 284 regional artists, emerging to established, young and young at heart, a true reflection of our community.

This year we tested a preview week so the community could see the show before sales began and received a lot of positive feedback.

Throughout the sale, 228 pieces were purchased, bringing in $22,800: $10,850 going to artists and $11,950 to our organization. Thanks to those artists who donated their 50% back to North Van Arts. As our primary annual fundraiser, the money raised is critical to help us offset the costs of exhibitions and arts education so we can keep participation fees low or free.

Art Rental Show January 17 - February 15 Opening Reception: Thursday, January 16 A salon-style show featuring 200 new artworks added to the Art Rental collection. Created using an impressive range of media – painting in oil, acrylic, watercolour, prints – linocut, lithograph, woodcut, photography, and mixed media, more than 150 artists shared their expressions of natural and urban landscapes, seascapes, abstract, floral – and more!

Rent and buy works right off the gallery walls.

February 21 – March 21 Exhibition Opening: Thursday, February 20 In an art world where digital technology is becoming more prevalent as a means to produce work, ?What Matters! explored art creation with fundamental materials, glass, wood, and wool, taking a closer look at the ritualized, compulsive action of making.

ART IN THE COMMUNITY - CITY ATRIUM GALLERY In partnership with the City of North Vancouver, we present the work of local artists at City Hall that explore issues and realities of the community. This gallery is designed to enhance public space, create interest, and provide opportunities for emerging and professional artists to exhibit their work. Since 2014, we have presented the work of over 20 local artists in this public space,

Robin Gleason: What Will Happen to Summer?

June 5 - September 16 paper lithograph print, cut & stacked paper Drawing, printmaking, cutting and stacking mimic fragments of charred bark. As temperatures rise and the fire season expands and intensifies, will our relationship to summer evolve?

Natasha Van Netten: Superpod September 18 – December 2 Wire sculptural installation representing all 76 southern resident killer whales. This unique group of orca have been a small population since numbers were first recorded in 1976 — fluctuating between 70 and 99 members. The delicacy of her installation echoes their fragility and highlights the value and importance of each individual within the group.

Simone Guo: Where the Water Ends January 22 – March 16 Exhibition of paintings by Simone Guo. Guo works primarily in acrylic, oil, ink, and pastel through gestural brushstrokes exploring the space between landscape and abstraction.

ART IN THE COMMUNITY - DISTRICT LIBRARY GALLERY In partnership with North Vancouver District Library, we present the work of local artists at Lynn Valley Library, since 2010. Over the past 10 years, we have presented the work of over 250 local artists in this public space, working in a great variety of 2D media.

You Are Here 2020 July 10 – September 30 The 12 paintings in this exhibition tell the story of the North Shore through recognizable places and scenes.

Participating artists: Jenn Ashton, Sahar Banisoltan, Tim Bennison, Miles Brook, Victoria Eftimova, Geoffrey Caofei Feng, Martin Henry, Danyne Johnston, Lucas Kratochwil, Shelley McDonald, Kim Rosin The calendar has been produced since 2017 as a fundraiser for the North Shore Culture Compass.

Art in the Park November 6 - January 13 Presented in partnership with Parks Canada Since 2008, the Art in the Park Programme has been connecting people to Glacier National Park through art. A group of artists spend four nights in a rustic cabin setting in Glacier National Park, exploring, photographing, sketching and, depending on their medium, producing works of art. The resulting artwork reveals meanings and relationships about Canada’s natural and cultural heritage and provides the viewer with a deep impression of and a sense of connection to these special places. The Art in the Park travelling exhibition extends this connection to urban audiences across the country.

Susanne Kestner-Aiello February 26 - March 12 Susanne Kestner-Aiello began her practice as a studiobased figure and portrait painter, working from life and mostly with oil on canvas, however, during the last ten years, her attention has mostly turned to en plein air painting. Susanne enjoys painting different Vancouverarea landscapes, and plein air painting now comprises most of her work..

When the venue was closed to the public in March, this exhibition was moved online.

Visions of the North Shore January 3 - March 13 An Arts & Heritage Millennium project commemorates 12 historically significant sites with interpretive prints commissioned of local artists.

The District of North Vancouver Municipal Hall venue closed to the public in March 2020. As we isolated ourselves in our homes, we invited our community to visit the online StoryMap of Visions of the North Shore in their geographical context.

ART RENTAL Featuring 450 original works by 175 artists in a wide variety of styles and subjects. Artworks include paintings, photography, and mixed media with pieces ranging in size from 8” x 8” to 60” x 48”. An online gallery makes it easy to view the artwork anytime, from anywhere. Established in 1972, the collection is refreshed every year and highlights are displayed in January and September at CityScape Community ArtSpace.

Virtual Art Rental Exhibitions While North Van Arts was closed to the public, we explored ways to safely engage with the community during the pandemic. As one of our new initiatives, we launched a virtual gallery platform to highlight selected works from our Art Rental Collection. The new virtual gallery feature is presented in a series of themed and curated 3D exhibitions accessible through our website.

Landscapes from the Art Rental Collection June 11 - July 13 The natural beauty of British Columbia’s West Coast seascapes, rivers, mountains and forests provides inspiration for many artists. Created using an impressive range of media—oil, acrylic, and watercolour paintings, and prints using woodcuts, photography, and various mixed media techniques—artists share the richness of their expression.

ARTS EDUCATION

Programmes for School-Age Children, 6-11

North Van Arts offers Arts Education at various venues throughout the year for all ages and skill levels. We are committed to providing excellence in arts education to the public and individuals through workshops and classes for youth and adults, after school art and day and week-long art camps for children 6-11, as well as free art activities at community events. All art courses are developed and delivered by professional artist instructors.

My child is shy and doesn’t like camps. She felt welcome in this camp.

She enjoyed the interaction with the instructors and was really enthusiastic about the song they were writing and performing.

My daughter still sings the song around the house and is really proud of the video that was made. She is showing it to everyone!.

Community-Engaged Programmes at Mountainside Secondary School

ARTS EDUCATION

Art & Mycology Isabelle Kirouac, multidisciplinary choreographer Willoughby Arevalo, mycologist, visual artist, educator Arts-based experiences allow participants to develop awareness and appreciation for the natural world through engagement of the senses and empowering of the self. This project creates a metaphor for culture and society and the important place that each individual occupies in society, just like fungi in the environment. Through collaborations with the artists, students at Mountainside Secondary explore the natural world, focusing on fungi, using various visual, literary, and performance art practices to build awareness of how all our lives are connected in society and the natural world.

Rhythm & Word Music Therapy A creative self-expression programme for at-risk youth (13-18 yrs) Facilitated by Tatyana Dobrowolski, Registered Music Therapist, Educator “Before I came to mountainside, where I joined the music therapy program, I was ruthlessly bullied for my gender identity and sexuality. I went to a high school where self expression was quashed, and led to many issues with my mental health, thus diminishing my creative side...For the past year, i’ve been in music therapy almost every day, and it’s changed my life. Having a creative outlet to express myself and my identity has been so freeing. ARTS EDUCATION DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC When in-person programming was cancelled and we were all isolated, the focus of arts education for adults & youth shifted to self-care, positive inspiration, and skill-building.

To maintain accessibility, spring courses were offered with different payment options ranging from free to full cost. Classes were delivered live online via Zoom, and recorded for those who could not attend the live class.

Adults & Youth Mindfulness through Art Journaling with Joyelle Brandt This class guided participants in the creation of personal art journals, using supplies found at home, on hand.

Appropriate for all ages, and encouraged for family groups, mixed media techniques were demonstrated to help quiet the mind and find a place of calm.

I used to feel overwhelmed by studying other people’s complex journaling pages and being frustrated that I could not figure out how to do them myself. I was losing hope that I would ever know. Now I’m beginning to make them and it’s a great vehicle for getting in touch with the self. Now more than ever, it is important to have a tool that accesses our inner wisdom… Doing this course of mindfulness gives me hope, joy & peace. Thank you!

Joyelle Brandt’s Mindful Art Journalling class is so needed in our community right now. As a teacher, artist and partner, it is hard to get in personal learning and art practice time in ideal circumstances, let alone during a world pandemic. Joyelle led intentionally with a calm, solid presence and supported the flow both verbally and musically with grace. The class left me feeling positive, grounded and full of hopeful creativity for the upcoming week. Thanks for making this possible, accessible and inclusive for so many folks!

Intro to Acrylic Painting with Jeff Wilson Acrylic paints are very popular amongst artists for their brilliant colours, ease of handling, and rapid drying. This course was for anyone to try acrylic paints for the first time, or brush up their fundamental skills.

School Age Children Stories & Songs with Joyelle Brandt For families with young children at home, Joyelle provided some creative distraction with stories and art activities in this weekly class.

Secondary School Programming for Mountainside Secondary Students When schools closed in March, Music Therapy moved online and expanded to include school staff. Group videos created by the staff were shared widely within the school and school district reinforcing the connections within the school community. Staff created 3 videos, covering ‘Landslide’ by Fleetwood Mac, ‘Fever’ and “Lost Together’ by Blue Rodeo.

Art & Mycology continued online, offering classes in podcasting, storytelling, a virtual plant walk with T’uy’t’tanat Cease Wyss, (Indigenous plant diva) as well as sending participants outside on personal nature walks, with guided fungi observation assignments.

EVENTS - ART IN THE GARDEN ONLINE May 1 - 31, 2020 During the general confinement period of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 21st annual event was re-imagined to offer our community an uplifting diversion, while supporting local artists.

Art in the Garden Shorts Local musicians and visual artists created videos from their gardens, sharing how they are inspired by nature, releasing new videos each week during the month.

PROJECTS Studio in the City 2019 - The Harvest Studio in the City is a summer student employment programme by the City of North Vancouver managed by North Van Arts in 2019. Artist/Mentors: Dolores Altin and Elvira Monteforte worked with 8 youth over the summer to conceive of and create the public art installation.

Guided by City staff and community consultations, the objective of Studio in the City 2019 was to create a community gathering space for the Queensbury neighbourhood and to create a public art attraction for the Queensbury Village businesses.

The space was built using locally sourced natural materials as a nod to the area’s past land use as a forest, harvested for its valuable timber. The space challenges our notion of who should benefit from shared natural resources and raise awareness of the true value of forests.

Buckets of Hope | Spring 2020 The City of North Vancouver distributed Buckets of Hope throughout the City, encouraging residents and visitors to brighten up the city during the COVID-19 pandemic. The buckets included chalk to share messages of hope and positivity.

Local artist Sandrine Pelissier designed several large hearts, and with talented friends and fellow artists Therese Joseph, Sophie Babeanu, and Charlotte Pelissier, painted black outlines on the sidewalk in front of CityScape Community ArtSpace. The heart outlines remained the entire summer, inviting passersby to grab some chalk and add colour.

launched March 12, 2020 at The Polygon Gallery A culmination of 3 years of research, fundraising, and collaboration, the North Shore Culture Compass was launched.

Developed on a GIS-based platform, the hub tool is a free online map that visualizes the rich cultural offerings of the North Shore. As a community resource, the Culture Compass increases our collective awareness of the North Shore’s cultural core — including the First Nations and diverse communities — promoting social engagement, new community interactions, and an understanding of what makes our shared home unique.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Kate Galicz Born and raised in our amazing and diverse community, Kate is a proud North Shore resident, who is pleased to be raising her family here. She holds a BA from UBC in history and art history; a Masters in Art History and a graduate diploma in curatorial studies from York University; and a certificate in human resource management from SFU. Kate has a broad-based knowledge of the arts and culture sector, working for Heffel, Canada’s national fine art auction house. As the Director of Heffel Vancouver and the National Co-Director of Consignments she is a key member of the leadership team. In addition, Kate manages the Human Resources department for Heffel’s growing national team. In 2019, Kate co-chaired the Audain Art Museum Gala and currently sits on the Gala Committee for Contemporary Art Gallery, securing corporate sponsorship and donations to their auction event. Kate is passionate about arts, culture and community.

Monica Gewurz Born in Lima, Peru, Monica immigrated to Canada in 1976 where she obtained her Bachelor of Science and Masters in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning. Throughout her career, Monica has worked in the public and private sector in real estate, land development, environmental and tourism issues, and economic development, and treaty negotiations with First Nations in BC and Alberta. She lives in Vancouver and has travelled extensively throughout the world studying different art forms. In 2013, she obtained her Fine Art Certificate from Emily Carr University of Art and Design, where she is currently enrolled in the Advanced Study Certificate program, in painting.

As a mixed-media artist, her paintings have been exhibited at numerous galleries in BC’s Lower Mainland and are in private collections internationally. Monica believes strongly in the multidisciplinary and multicultural potential of the arts council to encourage a broad range of people to participate in culturally enriching programmes and activities.

Nancy Hoang Nancy completed her academic studies in English Literature and Business Administration at Capilano University.

With a background in retail and marketing, Nancy is currently communications coordinator at Quay Property Management. Nancy enjoys volunteering at her local community kitchen and has previous experience with marketing communications at Think the World Differently and sat on Seasmart’s Board of Directors.

Anne-Marie Lawrence Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Anne-Marie has lived in North Vancouver since 1972. She has been involved in many community organizations such as the North Shore Women’s Centre, United Way Committee for the North Shore, Girl Guides, and the North Vancouver Community Arts Council. With an avid interest in the arts, Anne-Marie has had a membership with the Vancouver Art Gallery since 1983. Anne-Marie sits on the Board of North Shore Heritage Preservation Society because she strongly believes in the value of heritage as an expression of cultural identity and supports the retention of heritage structures, integrating with new construction rather than demolition, to retain as much of the original character of the North Shore as is possible.

David Little David obtained a law degree from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of British Columbia, and has since practiced business law in Vancouver. Involved with the business and legal community, David has worked on many complex projects such as hospitals and educational institutions. Many projects involve multiple parties with private and public objectives to be reconciled. Raising a family with his wife in North Vancouver, he has enjoyed the programming and events of the NVCAC, notably the art rental programme and the Anonymous Art Show. David is supportive of the organization’s efforts in bringing art to the community in interesting and unexpected ways, creating a feeling that North Vancouver is a real community where people of all ages live, work, create and grow.

Effat Mirnia Born and raised in Iran, Effat was part of an art-loving family. From childhood, she expressed her feelings and thoughts through her art – painting, writing and poetry became a form of release for her. From a very early age, Effat volunteered with several organizations: she taught underprivileged children working for UNICEF and taught illiterate women in the villages of Iran.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Effat Mirnia continued In Iran’s Governor House, she worked with immigrants and refugees to help them lead a successful life in a new country. Effat obtained a Bachelor in Communications and a Bachelor of Arts in Design. Since moving to Canada in 1983, she has worked in diverse fields such as interior design and customer service while raising her two daughters.

She has fully integrated herself within her community and has volunteered her time with autistic children as well as organizations such as North Vancouver Community Art Council. She is currently volunteering with Immigrant Services Society (ISS of BC) as a facilitator and a member of the advisory committee for refugee and immigrant women who are new to Canada. She also volunteers as a counsellor with the North Shore Seniors Peer Support and Hamrahan Iranian Seniors Support. Her creative oil and acrylic paintings vary from landscapes and architecture to portraits and realistic life subjects. Art has not only become a creative outlet for Effat but a true passion in life.

Etienne Normandin With a Masters in Public Affairs from the Université Laval, Etienne is a senior economist for the Government of Canada with a background in public policy. In addition to his career, Etienne is personally motivated by a conviction that art can be a critical tool for social integration and social development, especially for children and youth. This is why he began volunteering for the North Vancouver Community Arts Council shortly after his arrival from Ottawa, Ontario in 2016. Etienne also volunteers with the Young Associates of the Vancouver Art Gallery and was recently appointed to the City of North Vancouver Social Planning Advisory Committee. With his professional background and personal interests, Etienne is looking forward to working with the NVCAC to help build a strategic vision for the organization while strengthening the economic case for arts in the community.

Sandrine Pelissier Sandrine obtained her Masters of Natural Science degree at the University of Rouen, France and has been working as a professional visual artist since she moved to Canada in 1998. She is very involved in the community, as cofounder of the North Shore Arts Crawl and co-founder of a weekly life-drawing group. Furthering her own career as a professional visual artist and instructor, Sandrine also has extensive experience in marketing and events planning.

She has a keen interest in community art projects that make the North Shore an exciting place to live with many opportunities to connect the general public with artists.

Don Rutherford Don is a long time member of the North Shore community – both personally and professionally. He and his wife established their home in Deep Cove in 1985 and went on to raise two boys in the Cove. Now empty nesters, they continue to reside in their Deep Cove Cottage and enjoy every minute of living in this unique community.

After graduation from the University of B.C. School of Social Work in 1982, Don worked for several years in the field of adolescent offenders, assessment and treatment planning. In 1988, he joined the North Shore Neighbourhood House as Executive Director where he remained for almost 25 years. Don retired in 2011 to enjoy “a life of leisure” which entails a never ending list of chores including gardening, trying to learn to paint (watercolours), walking the dog, a wee bit of consulting to a couple of non-profit organizations in labour relations, collective bargaining and public relations.

Shirley Shannon Shirley Shannon has lived in North Vancouver since 1995. Her career path has included co-founding a successful software company, and later an import/export business specializing in pianos and accessories. After selling her company in 2008, she worked at Douglas College as a business advisor for the Self Employment program. Shirley holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and has obtained the CGA-CPA designation. She is an active community volunteer having served as a mentor for the Canadian Youth Entrepreneur Association and as a Career Settlement Mentor at the Immigrant Services Society of BC. She is a former President of AFCA-BC, the Association of FilipinoCanadian Accountants. Today Shirley runs a business consulting firm in North Vancouver and serves as a mentor to CPA students in developing skills needed for certification. She reads extensively, and appreciates the ability of music and the arts to bring people of diverse backgrounds together.

CHAIR’S MESSAGE Board Chair Report to AGM October 6, 2020 Well that was quite the year.

North Van Arts, like every other organization, business (big or small), government (local, provincial or national), or individual, had nothing resembling a normal year.

We started the 2019/20 season with a healthy financial position, exciting plans for a full year of events, fund raising, programs and exhibitions. Some of those planned activities happened, many did not.

On the positive side, we marked a significant milestone with our 50th Anniversary Gala, hosted the highly successful Pushing Boundaries exhibition, raised critical funds for our organization and artists with our annual Anonymous Art Show, and in March of this year launched the outstanding Culture Compass.

And then . . . well you pretty much know what happened next.

We were forced to close the gallery, cancel exhibitions and classes and very quickly move to managing a very real threat to our staff, our visitors and our members. The array of federal support programs and the requirements of provincial health authorities took some time to understand and incorporate. Government assistance has been critical to our survival.

But, even more critical, has been strong leadership, incredibly creative and committed staff, and the even handed, level-headed approach by our governance body. I want to express my sincere thanks to Nancy especially, but to all the staff, who have faced the challenges of this pandemic like they face every other challenge, through creative thinking, hard work and a “we can do that” attitude. Thank you all.

I want to thank Nancy Hoang, Etienne Normandin and Shirley Shannon for their contributions to the Board, in Etienne’s case six years, Shirley two years and Nancy one year.

We continue to be concerned about the huge number of visual artists, dance and performing artists, musicians and support people who have not faired so well through all of this. In some cases, livelihoods are seriously threatened, audiences become more isolated and venues may be forced to close permanently. Theatres have been particularly hard hit. We will continue to explore ways to fulfill our mandate as an advocate for the arts.

We are grateful for the tremendous support we receive from federal agencies, the Province of BC, City and District of North Vancouver, and the North Vancouver Recreation & Culture Commission. The Culture Compass project has resulted in almost one million federal dollars of funding coming into our community.

ENDOWMENTS The North Vancouver Community Arts Council Scholarship at Capilano University, was established in 1988 to support students in visual and performing arts programmes at Capilano University. Each year the university selects a student to receive the scholarship to further their education.

The North Vancouver Community Arts Council Children & Youth Arts Fund was established in 1993 through the North Shore Community Foundation. This fund offsets costs for children and youth to participate in North Van Arts programmes and/or support creation projects by children and youth.

From March 23 to June 22, 2020 CityScape Community ArtSpace was closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Staff continued to work from home and re-imagined new programming to respond to the pandemic, continuing to fulfill the mandate.
