The proverbial teacher and life-long learner, Rose dedicated 40 years to teaching music in Christian and public education. She taught in multiple locations in NC and TN. She grew up at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in VA with loving parents and grandparents who instilled the value of learning, appreciation of mountain culture, and preservation of our past. Rose currently owns Memories on Main Antiques and Collectibles in downtown Mount Airy, NC.

Gloria is co-owner of The Nest & Hive Shoppe, a home décor business in Fancy Gap, VA, as well as the co-host of The Vintage Southern Homemaker television show. Her musings on life growing up and living in the South have appeared in publications and on TV throughout the region. She is an expert antiques collector who grew up in the business and worked many years as a dealer in the Yadkin Valley area, where she currently resides.

Gin is the owner of Ginger Horse Studio. Her focus is lifestyle photography, covering horse shows, weddings, concerts, and doing on location portraits. Gin graduated from the University of Findlay with an Equine Business Management degree, where she also studied music and photography. She is a member of the Mount Airy Ukulele Invasion (MAUI) and the Granite City Rock Orchestra (GRO).

Gin resides in Lowgap, NC with her family on their small horse farm.

Sheri grew up in Mt. Airy, NC, and lives thereabouts with her husband. Together they run a couple of small businesses and plan their next vacation. A graduate of High Point University, her first job was as a writer at a marketing firm—and she’s been scribbling ever since. Sheri has several suspense novels in publication and Surry Living is proud to include sequential excerpts from one of her books in each issue.

Kristen Owen is a Digital Content Producer for Lowe’s Home Improvement. She grew up on a small family farm in Buncombe County and graduated from N.C. State University with undergraduate degrees in Agriculture Extension and Communication, and a masters degree in Communication. She has a passion for agriculture and teaching. She loves the mountains, reading, meeting people and going new places. She lives in Salisbury with husband Matt, an agriculture teacher at a local high school.

Joanna Radford is the Commercial and Consumer Horticulture Agent for the NC Cooperative Extension in Surry County with expertise in entomology, gardening, and pesticide education. She began her career with NC Cooperative Extension in Stokes County in 1995 as a 4-H Agent, later switching to Field Crops and Pesticide Education in Surry County. In 2012, she assumed the role of Horticulture Agent for Surry County. She lives on a farm with her husband and two teenage daughters.

Raised in the agriculture world, she went on to earn degrees in animal science and veterinary medicine from North Carolina State University. She and her husband, Adam, currently live in Statesville with Oliver the house rabbit, a few cats, Blossom the donkey, and a flock of Katahdin hair sheep.

Larry is the Executive Editor of Surry Living Magazine and the Creative Director at Vivid Graphics in Galax, VA. With over 25 years experience as a writer, graphic designer, and commercial photographer.

Larry and wife, Trina, have four wonderful, grown children, one awesome grandchild, and live in Fancy Gap, VA.

A 1965 graduate of Guilford College, he received his MBA from Bucknell in ’68. His early career included service at York Oil Company and Neighbors Stores.

His passion for celebrating community servants led him to begin producing People Doing Good For Others on WPAQ in 1998, which fueled his interest in local broadcasting and ultimately his purchase of 100.9 WIFM in February 2004.

Gary’s dedication to the community extends beyond the walls of WIFM to include a photo ministry, a monthly newsletter, “The Communicator,” and prior service as a Surry County Commissioner, member of the Mount Airy City Schools Board of Education, and service as a UNC-TV Trustee. He’s a member of the Surry County Educational Foundation and Board Member of the Elkin Rescue Squad.

That’s what I once thought about fishing. It seemed like a waste of time when I was young. I just couldn’t understand what my dad and brother saw in it. However, as I got older, I caught the fishing bug. It became more than just a sport – it was an escape, a way to connect with my family, and an opportunity to hit the reset button. Some of my very best memories include a trout stream and fishing pole.

Fishing is now something that brings me great joy. With that also comes responsibility. My father always made sure my brother and I knew and followed fishing rules and regulations.

For him, it’s a way to respect the sport and tradition. And that’s why I encourage you, when you hit the waters this fall, to know the signs – the fishing signs, that is.

Take a look at the different classification tags that appear by North Carolina rivers and streams, along with some information about what each sign signifies: Hatchery Supported Trout Waters Season is open August 1, 2018 – February 28, 2019 (no fishing allowed from March 1 – April 5, 2019) and again April 6 – July 31, 2019.

Delayed Harvest Trout Waters Season is open October 1, 2018 – May 31, 2019.

Pyrex Collectibles

Since I now live with my 88-year-old mom, I am finally allowed to invade her cooking territory that was prohibited to me as a small child.

Her large, yellow Pyrex bowl is one of my favorites. Although it has seen more than 60 years of use, it’s still serviceable. I whip up Watergate Salad, old-fashioned potato salad, or a protein-packed bean salad in it regularly.

Pyrex originated with the manufacturing of railroad lantern globes. The glass used in the globes became hot as the lantern light burned. When exposed to rain, sleet, or snow, the globe would often crack. Corning Glass was asked to solve this breakage problem. Their solution was a globe made of borosilicate, nonexpanding glass that they named Nonex.

Nonex glass then became the source of much experimentation, particularly with wet cell battery jars. Jesse Littleton, a Corning researcher, brought home a modified battery cell jar for his wife to try after her ceramic casserole dish cracked. Littleton’s wife found that the Nonex bowl cooked foods much faster and at lower temperatures. To make the glass food-safe, Corning removed the lead from the Nonex manufacturing process and proceeded to develop the Pyrex cookware line.

Florences’ Ovenware from the 1920s to the Present, a reliable collector’s guide, displays a vintage ad proclaiming “There’s only one PYREX ware, a product of Corning Glass Works.” This ad appeared in magazines and sales pamphlets from the 1940s through the 1960s and showed husbands and wives placing large bowls of food on the table for serving.

Early pieces were mostly clear or solid color, but patterns such as American Heritage, Snowflake, Pink Daisy, Cinderella, and Amish Butterprint were introduced and are still sought after today. Spring Blossom was the pattern that I bought for my first apartment during the mid-1970s. That avocado green pattern included both filled-in and open, five-petaled flowers. In my shop today, the three most popular patterns are the classic primary color set like my mother’s bowls, the turquoise or pink shade of the Amish Butterprint, and my pattern, Spring Blossom. Just as with all commodities, the prices of Pyrex fluctuate with demand.

I continue to use my Spring Blossom pieces and am an “antique hound” sniffing out pieces that I don’t have. And I guess Mom will watch from Heaven as my younger sister and I squabble over that old yellow Pyrex bowl someday. I just pray we don’t get into a tugging match and the bowl ends up in pieces on Mom’s kitchen floor! That’s not likely, though – it is Pyrex, after all!

New Invasive Species on the Horizon

Services. You may want to collect or take a picture of the insect. If you are not sure what you are looking at is the spotted lanternfly you can submit a photograph of any life stage to newpest@ncagr. gov with the subject “Suspected Spotted Lanternfly.”

The spotted lanternfly, an invasive species, has the potential to be destructive to the grape, tree-fruit, hardwood, and nursery industries. This pest originated in Asia and was discovered in the United States in Berks County, Pennsylvania in 2014. It has since migrated south and has been confirmed in areas as close to North Carolina as Frederick County, Virginia.

The insect has striking tan, white, and orange markings with spots. As a nymph, it prefers to feed on a wide range of plant species. It can be found on willow, poplar, maple, sycamore, plum, cherry, Adult Spotted Lanternfly and peach trees. The adult stage of the insect prefers to feed and lay eggs on tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima).

As a side note, the tree of heaven is on the invasive species list. It is common in our area and is found crowding out our native species. It also causes damage to pavement and building foundations. Controlling the tree of heaven would help control the spread of this insect. Young seedlings can be dug up with all the roots. This is easier when the soil is moist. Our clay soils tend to hold on tight to roots in dry conditions. Chemicals work well in late winter and early spring after the tree is cut.

Only one generation of the spotted lanternfly hatches per year.

Adults lay eggs in the fall that hatch in the spring. Once hatched, the insects go through four nymph stages. Nymphs are hard to find. In the first three nymph stages, coloration is black with white spots while the final nymph stage is red with white spots and black stripes. The adults emerge in July and are active until the winter.

The spotted lanternfly causes harm to plants by using its piercingsucking mouthparts to suck the sap right from the trunk, branches, twigs, and leaves. This reduces photosynthesis and weakens the plant sometimes to the point of death. The oozing wounds may leave a greyish trail along the bark of the plant.

The insect also secretes a substance known as honeydew. This honeydew is similar to what aphids secrete. It is loved by many bees and other insects. If there is a buildup of honeydew on the plant or ground, it may develop fungi such as sooty mold. This can cover the leaf surface and possibly stunt growth.

The Sacrifice

He rolled over, expecting the worse. Feeling no pain, he looked around quickly, checking on his buddies. Truth be told, he loved each one of these guys like the brother he never had. They would do anything for him, and he for them. They all seemed okay, but were staring at him, shock on their faces.

“Must have been a dud,” he joked.

No one laughed – no one moved.

As he looked from one to the other, they continued to stare at him, or as he now realized, at something behind him? He turned slowly, craning to see what they were looking at.

Then he saw it, or what was left of it. His shaky hand touched the soldier’s broken body, finding and turning over the blood-covered dog tags to see who had thrown himself on the grenade and saved them all. He wiped away the wet, sticky blood from the tags with his thumb, and then he shook his head in disbelief – then looked again – but it was clearly his name written there.

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.” (1 John 3:16) Sometimes I hear a person say, “There is no God,” and I ache for them. It is precisely because of love like this that we can be sure that God exists. Love like that soldier had for his buddies. An all-too true story about the greatest kind of love – love like Jesus had for us.

To know love then, is to know God. To know God, is to know love.

“Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.

No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.” (1 John 4:11-12) Do you have problems? Needs? Heartaches? Of course, you do.

Do you make mistakes? Have you hurt those that you love from time to time? Of course, you have. Do you pray? Do you pour out your need, your pain, and your shame to God?

And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1) “That we should be called children of God!” If you know God the Father, then you can trust in his Love for you – for you are his child! How do we love them even when oftentimes they don’t want our love? Well, we don’t do it alone, that’s for sure. We need his divine love within us if we are going to be able to love others.

What we need – really, really need – is to tap into the source.

“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love.

Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.” (1 John 4:16) “Rely on the love God has for us.” There it is – the secret to true, Godly love! Jesus loved us enough to die for us because he knew the love that God had for us. He knew and relied on his Father the same way that we can. Pray with me and see if your problems don’t shrink right before your eyes. They may not go away completely, but they will pale in significance to his great love for us and for those he sends us to love.

Pray this with me now as you read this, “God, make me like Jesus.” That’s it. One more time, “God, make me like Jesus.”

Now that is a prayer that God will answer because it is a prayer that comes from his very heart. We find in the book of Romans that Paul tells us “to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God.” Let God teach us to love like that – like that soldier – like his Son...

Considerations for Your Hunting Companion As the weather cools and the beautiful fall colors paint the Blue Ridge, hunters prepare for a bountiful harvest of their chosen wildlife. Whether you run coon dogs or have a retriever bring in your birds, it pays to ensure your dog is up to the job well ahead of its expected working season. Fitness, proper training, and appropriate preventive healthcare for your hunting companion are of utmost importance when you’re asking them to work alongside you this hunting season.

Routine vaccinations and regular deworming are cornerstones for your hunting dog’s health. Due to the nature of the sport, hunting dogs are potentially exposed to more disease-causing organisms than the majority of pets. Be certain that your pup’s protection against rabies, distemper, and leptospirosis are up to date well in advance of the opening of hunting season. These particular diseases are deadly, and they can be carried by various wildlife species that dogs may come in contact with during a hunt. Also ensure that you maintain a proper deworming protocol during and after hunting season. Again, the wildlife (and excrement) that your dog might come in contact with in greater concentrations while on the job may be carrying various internal parasites that can negatively impact your pet’s long-term health. Do not forget to maintain flea and tick prevention measures as well.

While these populations decrease in some areas in cold winter weather, our area often continues to see significant infestations on pets well into the winter.

Also well in advance of opening day, be sure that all hunting dogs are well-trained for the job and are physically fit enough to perform without injury to themselves. Insufficiently trained dogs that do not understand your requests or what is expected of them can create potentially dangerous situations for themselves – or you. Likewise, dogs that understand the job, but have not been properly exercised to maintain physical fitness may over-exert or injure themselves. Know your dogs well enough to recognize their limits and value each pup enough to respect those limits.

Consider the following recommendations for hunting day: •

Outfit your dog in a blaze orange safety vest for high visibility to other hunters who may be in the area. If you will be travelling through rough areas with thick growth and underbrush, consider a padded protective vest option to help prevent cuts, scrapes, and impalements.

Be certain that your dog has reliable identification. A break-away collar with tags that include a name and phone number often provides the quickest means of your dog being returned should you get separated. However, a microchip is a more-permanent identification option as tags or collars may be lost or removed. Be sure that you maintain current contact information with the microchip registration company.

•

Allow your dog frequent rest breaks and provide regular access to water. As stated above, know your dog well enough to recognize when he or she needs a break. Respect your dog’s limitations. This is especially important in late summer and early fall when temperatures may still be hot enough to cause heat stroke in over-worked animals.

Speak with your veterinarian regarding any specific questions or concerns you may have for your hunting companion this season.

Properly prepare yourself and your dog to enjoy the hunt and the spoils of a bountiful season!

Surry County is rich with open mics and jamming venues, providing opportunities for anyone to play or listen many nights of the week. If you are new to the idea of open mics and jams, here are a few tips to get involved: first of all, simply go listen, observe, and enjoy yourself. And when you’re ready to join in, here is what to expect: At an open mic venue, you will typically need to sign in, and you’ll be called up to play in turn. If there are house musicians, you may be able to request that one or more play with you. You might even end up with the full band backing you!

hosted by the South Carolina Broadcasters from 7:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and play or simply listen.

Also on Wednesdays, Hilda’s Place (formerly the Living Room) on Main Street in Pilot Mountain, is starting up an open mic. Follow them on Facebook or call for times.

For those who enjoy electric music, the Pie Factory comes alive on Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m., complete with drums and electric instruments – but acoustic instruments are also always welcome. The Pie Factory is located on 1263 N. South Street in Mount Airy.

Thursdays you will find Bluegrass/Old Time jams at the Historic Earle Theater on Main Street in Mount Airy beginning at 7 p.m.

Friday nights include an open Bluegrass/Old Time jam at the Lambsburg Community Center on 130 Learning Lane in Lambsburg, VA. George Smith is a guitarist and heads the George Smith Band, a rock band that performs mostly his music. He’s also a teacher, solo performer, and a piano tuner. He runs the Mt. Airy Ukulele Invasion (MAUI).

In a jam, typically anyone can play at any time. Simply grab a seat and hang on. If you are just learning to play an instrument, follow along with what your neighbors are playing. Most people are very helpful and accommodating. Either way, play what you can and lay back if you need to.

Now that you’ve got the basics, where can you find open mics and jams?

On Tuesdays, the beautiful Reeves Theater on Main Street in Elkin offers an open mic session, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This is open to the public and is free to get in. Many genres of music are played there, primarily on acoustic instruments.

FITNESS CHAL LENGE

POLICE FITNESS CHALLENGE OCTOBER 6, 2018 The Police Fitness Challenge is a tactical and obstacle, 2-person TEAM event for law enforcement personnel or anyone wanting to participate in this fun, exciting, and challenging event. The course is located on a 120-acre private farm in the Blue Ridge Mountains outside of Galax, Virginia. It’s three miles long, features 21 obstacles, and ends with the obstacle that makes this event both special and unique — a timed marksmanship component!

Teams for the Law Enforcement Challenge are comprised of (2) persons and can be from any agency (not necessarily from same agency. Teams for the Open Challenge are also (2) persons, age 14 and over (under 18 requires a parent or guardian signature).

Mingle with Nature at Minglewood Farm & Nature Preserve

Minglewood is a 65-acre experiential learning facility focused on sustainable food production and environmental stewardship. Its mission is to lure people away from the digital world via curriculumbased field trips, classroom programs, workshops and events.

Owners Margie and Bill Imus are now in their fourth year of operating Minglewood as a nonprofit. They purchased the former tobacco farm in the late 1980s, rehabbed the land by adding organic matter to the depleted soil, and began farming full-time. But their goal from day one was to develop a higher use for the farm as a teaching tool and nature preserve.

“We give people an opportunity to go out and experience nature,” Margie Imus says. “There is a lot to learn here.”

Wooded areas with meandering trails make up the majority of Minglewood’s acreage. The Imuses farm seven to eight acres, including space for greenhouses and woody ornamentals. An environmental educator joined the staff in late July to align student visits with the curriculums for Surry, Stokes and Forsyth county schools.

In addition to school field trips, the farm welcomes groups of adults, such as garden clubs, retirement groups, church groups and photo clubs. All visits are by appointment only, and scheduled events require advance registration.

Homeschoolers with Bill Imus

Minglewood’s events include workshops for adults and children, as well as on-farm suppers on select Saturdays and Sundays. For the suppers, a guest chef prepares a four-course meal, which is served outdoors on the farm. Minglewood supplies most of the produce, and other local farms provide meats and dairy products.

“There’s a big disconnect with the natural world, and we have a wonderful place where we can share that world with others,” Margie says.

The NCDOT Wildflower Program

After seeing photos of wildflowers planted on state right of ways in Texas in 1985, Dottie Martin, wife of then North Carolina Governor, Jim Martin, commented, “This is fascinating.

What can we do to get this sort of thing going in NC?” This simple suggestion inspired the NCDOT to begin a Wildflower Program that has grown from 12 to 1500 acres along interstate and primary routes across the Tarheel State. In consultation with the Department of Agriculture at North Carolina State University, NCDOT has made significant developments in wildflower planting. With additional encouragement and support from the Garden Club of North Carolina, the program has grown to become America’s largest and most recognized, featuring annuals, perennials, and NC native flowers. The program is one of NCDOT’s most popular initiatives, and they receive hundreds of comments of praise each year from residents and visitors alike.

Over 130 varieties are planted across North Carolina, and local favorites include Red Poppy, Zinnia, Cosmos, Coreopsis, Rocket Larkspur, Orange Daylily, and Hybrid Sunflowers.

When we see the Red Poppies blooming, they have a special meaning. They are planted by our dedicated NCDOT crews in memory of servicemen and women killed during World War I and commemorating the centennial anniversary. A poem written by John McCrae, “In Flanders Field,” speaks to the Red Poppies growing near the graves of fallen comrades.

Our NCDOT Division 11, headquartered in North Wilkesboro, includes the counties of Alleghany, Ashe, Caldwell, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yadkin. The person responsible for the 70 acres in 30 beds is Chris Southard, an 18-year NCDOT veteran and 5-year wildflower specialist.

Chris says, “Working with the wildflowers brings me great happiness. I can be creative in the selection of varieties planted and look forward to seeing how the colors complement one another. Bright orange, red, and yellow do best. We choose highly visible bed sites to please the traveling public and take great pride in the beds. My favorite beds are on I-77 between Exits 93 (Dobson) and 85 (Elkin) where we feature Orange Zinnia and Red Poppy. I enjoy the opportunity to showcase District 11.”

Funding for the $1,500,000 annual budget comes from revenue generated by the sale of personalized license plates and from private donations. In April of 2015, Bayer CropScience donated $100,000 to add 46 additional acres for roadside pollinator plantings. Bee-attractant vegetation such as wildflower beds promote honey bee population development and support crop pollination. Bayer CEO Jim Blome said, “This down payment will help establish new habitat for honey bees that will allow them to flourish as they continue to play a critical role in creating sustainable agriculture.” Bayer calls the initiative “Feed A Bee” and their goal is to plant forage in all 50 states by the end of 2018.

Ballgames and sporting events, whether at home or away, often involve popcorn. There is just something about the delicious smell of fresh popped popcorn to make an occasion more fun. If popcorn is one of your favorite snacks, you are not alone as each man, woman, and child in the US consumes approximately 42 quarts a year.

October is National Popcorn Popping Month. Use this recipe from North Carolina Cooperative Extension’s Med Instead of Meds curriculum to make a whole grain treat to enjoy at your next event. While your corn is popping, test your popcorn knowledge with the facts (see below) from the National Popcorn Board.

Making fresh popcorn on your stove-top is delicious and surprisingly simple! All you need is a large pan or pot with a lid and some popcorn kernels. Homemade popcorn can even be made in advance to have on hand for later.

Flavor your popcorn to your liking – some favorite flavor combinations include: • paprika, black pepper, and salt • oregano, thyme, parsley, black pepper, and salt • shredded parmesan and black pepper • cinnamon and nutmeg Pop, season and enjoy!

HOMEMADE POPCORN Serves 4 Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients • 2-3 tablespoons olive oil or canola oil • 2 tablespoons popcorn kernels – about enough to cover the bottom of your sauce pot with one layer of kernels.

(Popping kernels grow more than you’d expect during cooking, so if you’re unsure whether you’ll have enough room in your pot for all the popped corn, start with fewer kernels.)

• Herbs and spices to taste

Directions 1. Put a medium sauce pot on high heat. Coat the bottom of the pot with a thin layer of oil. Add three popcorn kernels and put a lid on the pot.

2. Once one or more of the kernels have popped, cover the bottom of the pot with a single layer of the remaining popcorn kernels and replace the lid.

3. Gently shake the pot over the heat source to prevent the kernels from burning. Continue shaking until most kernels have popped.

4. Turn off the heat and continue to shake for a few seconds to pop any final kernels.

5. To season popcorn, choose your preferred flavor combination (see suggestions above). To help herbs and spices stick, drizzle 1-2 teaspoons of olive oil over the popcorn, toss, season, and then toss again. (Med Tip: Season your popcorn while it’s still warm so it will better absorb oil and spices.)

hen you are outdoors all day enjoying your favorite sporting pastime, the result can be a hearty appetite. This chocolate cake is very filling and quite satisfying on a cool fall day. The secret ingredient for making this dense cake is the olive oil. The ganache frosting is the perfect topping because it is less sweet than regular frosting. I added the meringue ghosts, well, just because it is that time of year!

minutes until thick and creamy. Reduce the speed to low and gradually add the cooled cocoa mixture until it’s well combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until just combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl.

5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan.

6. Bake in the center of the oven on the middle rack for 55 to 60 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs clinging to it but with no wet batter. Let cool for a few minutes. Then run a thin knife around the inside edge of pan to release the cake. Turn the cake out on a cooling rack and discard the paper liner. Cool completely.

Ingredients for Ganache Frosting • 4 ounces bittersweet chocolate drops or chopped chocolate • ½ cup heavy cream • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional) Directions for Ganache Frosting 1. Heat the cream in a saucepan or in the microwave, until the mixture begins to steam, just before boiling temperature.

2. Pour hot cream over chopped chocolate in a bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes. Add vanilla extract, if desired. Stir until smooth.

3. Pour warm ganache over the cake. Reheat for a few seconds in the microwave if ganache thickens too much as you work.

OLIVE OIL CAKE WITH GANACHE FROSTING Ingredients for Cake • Olive oil and cocoa powder for the pan • ½ cup Dutch-processed (dark) cocoa powder • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • ½ tsp. almond extract • 1 cup all-purpose flour • ¼ tsp. salt • ¼ tsp. baking soda • 3 large eggs plus 1 egg yolk, at room temperature • ⅔ cup olive oil, light for baking • 1-⅓ cups sugar Directions for Cake 1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Oil an 8×2-inch round cake pan with olive oil and line the bottom of the pan with a roundcut parchment paper the size of the pan. Oil the paper and dust pan lightly with cocoa.

2. In a microwave bowl, boil ½ cup of water. Meanwhile, sift the cocoa powder into a bowl. Stir 6 tablespoons of the boiling water into the cocoa until it’s smooth and glossy.

Add extra water if needed. Stir in the vanilla and almond extracts. Set aside to cool.

3. In another small bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and baking soda and set aside.

4. In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine the eggs and yolk, olive oil, and sugar. Beat on medium-high speed 2-3

Ingredients for Ghost Meringues • 4 egg whites, room temperature • ½ tsp of cream of tartar • 1 cup of sugar • 1 tube of black decorating icing gel • Candy eyes (optional) Directions for Ghost Meringues 1. Preheat oven to 225 degrees.

Place parchment paper on a baking sheet and spray with non-stick cooking spray.

2. Using a mixer with whisk attachment, beat egg whites on medium speed until they become foamy.

3. Add cream of tartar and continue to beat.

4. Add sugar one tablespoon at a time while beating.

5. Increase the speed to medium high and beat until stiff peaks form.

6. Place the meringue mixture into a piping bag with a large round tip, and pipe onto parchment paper to make a ghost shape about 2 inches tall. Press down and lift up to create layered stacks for each ghost. Experiment with shapes. If you have to start over, scrape up the meringue and place back in mixer to beat again to stiffen.

7. Bake ghosts for about 1 hour.

8. Turn off oven and cool ghosts in oven until they turn hard.

This can take a few hours.

9. Add candy eyes with icing gel or draw your own with the black gel.

10. Place meringue ghosts on top of cake just before serving.

One leg draped over the back of the sofa, keeping time with the music, one forearm covering his eyes, he did not realize someone else was in the room until she plopped on the floor beside him. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a flash of red curls, and he started to laugh.

“He’s a boy.” Jack dismissed the subject with one word.

“You’re a brave woman, Amy, you know that?”

Neither spoke again as she settled opposite him, running her fingers through her hair, sending droplets of water flying. “Am I interrupting something?” she finally asked.

“Why?”

“There’s a murderer loose, Miki. The harbor is no place for you at this hour.”

“Actually, Granny Jen told me to come on up.”

Shrugging off the implication, she said, “How about you? Aren’t you afraid to be here?”

Without changing expression, he slid open a drawer beneath the table, flashed a .38 revolver, and returned it to the drawer. The gun was only in view for a breath of time, but its presence sharpened the room. “I’m ready for him,” he stated, and his voice was as clear a threat as the gun.

“Between Granny Jen, Miki, and my current mood, you are treading dangerous territory.”

“Huh. Who would have ever thought?”

“And your moods never mean anything, Hunter. So explain to me about you and Miki.”

“I wish somebody would explain it to me.” He zapped the music off and sat up abruptly. “Now, what if you had caught me naked?” he teased.

“Sure. Why not? You did just say you would help, didn’t you?”

“Not exactly.”

“Sure you did.”

“Lord, Hunter, you never change.”

“That’s up for debate. So what color are we painting?” asked Hunter.

“If it were mine, I’d paint these three walls white and that one wall with no windows something bright, like coral. But Granny Jen may not go for that.”

“She won’t care.” He stood in the center of the room and surveyed his domain, hands on his hips. “Man, this is going to be a job.

Why are you making me do this?”

“Me? I . . .” Amy sputtered.

“How much does paint cost, anyway? I’m on a budget.”

“Just charge it to your granny.”

“No. Let’s charge it to your dad,” said Hunter. “He won’t know the difference. He’ll just think your mom went on another decorating spree.”

“Tell you what. You pay for the paint, and I’ll supply the rollers and stuff from Mom’s stash.”

“Deal.” Hunter stuck out his hand to shake on it.

“I wish I knew precisely at what point I managed to volunteer for this.”

They were both laughing when they stepped out on the landing.

Crossing the yard below them, Miki stopped short and looked up at them.

“Hey, Babe, where’ve you been?” Hunter’s voice was casual.

She looked at him with a rare desperation in her eyes.

“Come with us. We’re boldly going where this man has never gone before.”

“To the paint store,” put in Amy. “How domestic.” Miki turned toward the house.

They started down the steps.

“Really, come on. It’ll take two interior decorators to keep me colorfully coordinated.”

She smiled briefly. “No, thanks. I’m really wiped. I’ll catch you later.” And Miki walked to the house without a backward glance.

“Go talk to her. I think something’s wrong,” said Amy when the screen door banged behind Miki.

“Nah. I have a mission to complete.” He jumped in his Jeep and motioned for her to follow. With one more look at the door, she climbed in. “To seek out new life and new paint colors,” he quipped as he cranked up. * * * Inside, Miki sank to the floor, head on her knees, shoulders shaking. Her hands were clutching her hair, and she did not seem to hear Granny Jen approach.

“I wish with all my heart I could get down on the floor with you,” said Granny Jen. Miki jumped and tossed her hair back, quickly wiping her cheeks.

Shoulders back and chin up, her body posture changed from pitiful to defiant; her eyes dared Granny Jen to speak again.

But she did speak. Slowly, she lowered herself into a nearby chair and said, “What’s wrong, child? You can’t be spending all those tears on Hunter.”

Miki stared at her blankly. “You don’t like me, do you?” she finally asked.

Granny Jen sighed. “You perplex and confuse me, and I don’t understand you. But I do care about you a great deal.”

“Why?” “Perhaps I have been blessed with a caring heart.”

A long time passed as Miki looked at the floor. Her features softened. “If you had any idea of the crap I’ve gotten myself into, you would be more than perplexed. The easy part, I’ll try to explain. I just wanted to talk to Hunter so bad, you know? And there he was laughing, and I knew it wasn’t a good time. And somehow—” she leaned her head back against the wall and spoke to the ceiling— “somehow I don’t think there will be a good time again.”

“Why not?” Jen prodded.

“He and I were so . . . together . . . back at school. This place has pulled us apart.”

“No it hasn’t.”

There came that defiant angle of the chin again; the blue eyes narrowed.

“Shh. Just let me say this.” Granny Jen blew out a breath and proceeded carefully. “I think there is a great emptiness inside you and Hunter, and you reach for each other and maybe some narcotics to try and fill it.”

Miki eyed her suspiciously.

“As long as you keep reaching, you think, ‘Maybe this is happiness.

Maybe I’ll be satisfied.’ But here in this place, you see Hunter realizing that somewhere close by is something that will truly satisfy him, and that makes your emptiness even more acute.”

Miki stood abruptly. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, but if it has something to do with Amy, you are so far wrong you’re not even on this planet.”

Granny Jen laughed a truly tickled laugh. “Well, I’m going to wake you up after a bit. It will do you good to be with those two when they get to going.”

Miki shook her head and started off again.

“Now you don’t want Hunter to think you’re hiding away jealous, do you?”

“You are cagey, Granny Jen. All right, you win. I’ll get up eventually and join them. Or will you allow me into the sanctuary of Hunter’s room?”

“Only Hunter can answer that, dear.” And Granny Jen closed her eyes before Miki’s stare could hit her.

woman, she was not accustomed to speaking with such passion. It almost felt as if she had been in a fight with Hunter this morning, and now with Miki. Maybe it was a fight. The line between good and evil certainly seemed to have pierced her home this summer.

She thought back to a time many years before when the battle lines had been clear, the battleground her own son’s heart. And now, the heart of her son’s son was at stake.

But there was a difference. Her son’s battle had been fought on pure granite. Oh, how hard his heart had become! Kiln-fired stone.

Hunter’s heart was still clay. For all his emptiness and indifference, his heart was still malleable. And she would fight for it to her dying breath.

OCTOBER 27: MISS ANGELS ANNUAL 5K ZOMBIES ARE COMING 6:00 PM - 11:00 PM, Downtown Mount Airy – How it works: Escape the zombies trying to take your life as you run along the new 5K race course! At the start of the race, all humans will be given a race “life” belt with 3 Velcro flags attached. Zombies along the course will try to take the human flags, or “lives.” Zombies will scare you but NOT touch you. In order to qualify for a prize at the end of the race, you must finish the course with all 3 flags “lives.” Humans will be given this prize at the finish line when they show that all 3 flags are still attached to their Velcro belts. Race awards will be given to the fastest overall and age group finishers. 100% of the proceeds will be going to The Shepherd’s House and Mount Airy Museum of Regional History
