WELCOME It is with immense pleasure that I welcome you all to the Northumbria University Student Sports Ball here at Newcastle’s Civic Centre. This evening provides us with the opportunity to reflect upon a very full year of sport at Northumbria, and to celebrate the achievements of our students across all areas of our programme.

Following 18 months of little to no sport the appetite for welcoming our students in September was greater than ever, and this year has not disappointed as we have engaged with more students than ever before! As always, our clubs have been extremely popular with both individuals and teams having success nationally within BUCS. We have seen the return of Varsity (Northumbria v Newcastle), with this competition now open to all clubs who wish to enter.

Our nationally recognised Volunteering and Leadership Programme has supported the introduction of new programmes, such as Social and Hall Sport which have allowed us to offer

After an incredibly challenging two years I am truly thankful to you, the students, for making the 2021 – 2022 season one to certainly remember. A fantastic year for growth in terms of the number of clubs, students, and volunteers who have had sport as part of their Northumbria journey.

With our 36 sport clubs and 62 teams participating in BUCS, which is an effort I can only say a huge well done to all of you for, with notable successes to our Rugby League programme, Women’s football, Women’s hockey, Netball, and the Tennis club in BUCS cups and leagues.

I would like to thank all of you in clubs for your work on and off the pitch. Whether that’s taking part and donating in FUNdrasier Fridays or representing Northumbria within the local community, a huge thank you and well done to your endless commitment.

As much as I could spend all evening thanking our students, I can’t help but highlight the hard work and dedication of our Northumbria Sport staff. I would also like to publicly apologise to Tom Robinson for being an incredibly annoying committee member and not realising how

I hope for those of you who will be continuing your Northumbria journey next year, sport continues to be a key ingredient.

difficult his job was until I was in the office every Tuesday afternoon. The work that goes behind the scenes to make sure sport happens every Wednesday is monumental and without the team within Northumbria Sport, it really would not be the same.

I won’t lie when I say I’ve absolutely adored my job this year and truly want to thank everyone in this room once again for contributing to one of the best years of my young life. I have, hand on heart, loved every single moment. It has been an honour to be your VP this year.

EMMA’S HIGHLIGHTS AND MAGIC MOMENTS Rugby League ANOTHER WIN OVER BECKETT Even though this happened very recently, one of the highlights of this past year was watching our Rugby League team at BUCS Big Wednesday. It was a beautiful sunny day down in Nottingham, with some quite frantic driving from T Rob to get from Basford United grounds to the Rugby League pitch on Notts Campus we just got there for kick off. The support from the side-lines was huge from the off for Northumbria but somehow, all travelling teams supporting Beckett – sorry we’ve beat you all this season. The whole match had my nerves shot, especially when Beckett scored a drop goal to go ahead by one point (thankfully, we scored a try just after, but my gosh made me nervy). Every time Beckett tried to have a go, Northumbria just fought right back. It really was a great pleasure to see Payno’s boys get another National League title, proving they are once again the best in the country for what, the 4th, 5th, 6th time in a row? It also saw one of our own presented with BUCS Man of the Match, well done Tyler. Well in boys, truly and utterly deserved. (Final Score NU 28 -19 LB)

Netball 1s going into EXTRA TIME Against Edinburgh I won’t lie, I have dabbled in the world of netball. Being captain at school and at club, I was always interested in the sport and excited to go watch matches at uni. This really came to show at the end of semester one when Northumbria 1st played against Edinburgh 1st team in the cup. The match was end to end (literally, if you’ve ever watched netball, you get it) and the girls on court literally put their all into the match – I do remember President Niamh Mills absolutely clattering the ball out of a girl’s hand, but it wasn’t contact so that’s fine. The final whistle blew, and it was a draw. Well, I’ve never seen a draw in netball. The crowd didn’t know how to react, do we celebrate, do we clap? What we did do was, everyone googling “does netball go to extra time?” with some even asking “are there penalties in netball?” Thankfully, a quick look at the BUCS rules saw us realise we did, in fact, go to extra time. Another 15 minutes. Everyone watching was right behind the girls who went on to beat Edinburgh in that last 15. It truly was one of the most thrilling games to watch at Sport Central this past year. FUNdraiser Fridays

Northumbria Hockey

An initiative I have been very proud to help and get behind this year is FUNdraiser Fridays.

In semester one, Northumbria Sport hosted two events: a kwik cricket tournament and a netball tournament, to raise money and get loads of students involved. Both events were a huge success. Managing to play for about 4 teams during the kwik cricket, and being part of the highly successful and totally robbed staff team during the netball. I will say it was quite a sight to see so many male athletes get comfortable in some very tight fitting skorts/ netball dresses. Both events showed me how important events like this are for students and I am beyond chuffed for cricket and netball on their fundraising efforts. Overall, raising more than £1,800 for various charities, all our students should be proud they’ve taken part.

Now this isn’t exactly a magic moment, I cannot write in this programme about what has been special to me this year without mentioning Northumbria Hockey. The club could be considered a 4 year long magic moment for me. Without Northumbria Hockey, I would 100% not be here. The club holds and will continue to hold a special place in my heart for many years to come. It was the first place at university that really fit right for me and made me hundreds if not thousands of special memories at Northumbria. The club allowed me to grow as person, developing my leadership skills and networking. Many special moments from the club including beating the Newcastle team to win the league the first year we reintroduced our 2nd team. I do really want to say thank you to Northumbria Hockey and thank you for all the memories I have from you, and to those of you with years to come in the club, I know you’ll have the time of your life.

Every Wednesday and Friday Night Lights Shockingly, if you didn’t know, I love Kingston Park. Maybe this part should be my ode to Kingston Park, but for as many triumphs and defeats that have been at KP, whether that is Union or League, all those matches and the atmosphere at them has truly made me proud to be your VP Sport this year. To every student who has ever been, caused a bit of mayhem for the Tap & tackle bar staff, chanted in the stands, passionately supported our teams, I am sure you have loved every evening there as much as I have and I am so proud of you who have played, represented and supported Northumbria there.
