Integrated Masters in Law (M Law) and M Law Exempting (Bar Course)
If you are looking for an exciting career in the legal profession, then this is the course for you. This is an integrated master’s degree – meaning that instead of studying for separate undergraduate and postgraduate law qualifications this 4-year course combines the two. All students are offered the opportunity to transfer onto one of these two courses at the end of second year. Courses adopt a very practical approach to developing the advanced skills needed to thrive in the legal sector, using real-world examples to enhance your learning. Depending on your programme and module choices, you will have the opportunity to work with qualified legal professionals in our award-winning Student Law Office, and even have the chance to spend a semester studying at one of our partner institutions across the globe. The number of optional modules you can choose depends on the route you take. The Integrated Masters in Law programme prepares you for a fulfilling career as a solicitor. This, like the LLB covers the foundations of knowledge in law. Completion of this course also prepares you for the SQE 1 examination required by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, and means that on completion you can also boast an Integrated Masters level 15
qualification on your CV. Although a training course is not prescribed by the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the SQE is a demanding and high-stakes assessment and Northumbria’s state-of-the-art SQE courses are designed with you in mind to enable you both pass the SQE and to prepare you for practice as a solicitor. Note: The SQE exam is undertaken separately to the assessments you will do for the M Law after graduation. For those wishing to train as a barrister, our M Law Exempting (Bar Course) also offers an Integrated Masters level qualification on completion, but instead offers exemption from the postgraduate Bar Course (it incorporates the Bar skills and knowledge areas). Alongside the required modules set by the Bar Standards Board, you will also have the opportunity to choose optional modules from the list set out above for third year LLB. Note: The decision to join the M Law Exempting (Bar Course) route of the course is currently taken during your second year. Entry on to this route of the course is competitive and via application. Requirements for entry currently include a minimum second year level average of 60% and completion of a short application form. Applicants must also have joined one of the Inns of Court before enrolling onto the route. As such entry on to this route of the course cannot be guaranteed.
