Trump hosts rally in Rocky Mount
The Democrat held the state’s top office in four straight decades
Rocky Mount President Donald Trump, looking to boost approval for his agenda that has been weighed down by cost-ofliving concerns and the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, held a rally in Rocky Mount last Friday. In his speech, Trump railed against his predecessor, blaming former President Joe Biden and Democrats for the ongoing economic distress Americans may be feeling that helped propel Trump’s return to the White House last year. Trump boasted of generating billions of dollars of revenue through tariffs and pressing pharmaceutical giants to slash the prices of some medicines, claiming his administration is winning the battle against inflation and has the economy steered in the right direction.

Turning Point USA’s Kirk backs Vance for president in 2028
RALEIGH — As 2025 wraps up, the General Assembly has yet to agree on and pass a budget, but the legisla-
Phoenix Erika Kirk, widow of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and the organization’s new leader, endorsed a potential presidential bid by Vice President JD Vance on the opening night of the conservative youth group’s annual conference. Kirk’s statement last week is the most explicit backing of Vance’s possible candidacy by a woman who has been positioned as a steward to her late husband’s legacy. Charlie Kirk had become a power broker and bridge builder within the conservative movement before he was assassinated in September. After the assassination, Vance and his wife joined Erika Kirk in Utah to fly her husband’s remains home to Arizona aboard Air Force Two.

RALEIGH — Four-term North Carolina Democratic Gov. Jim Hunt, a towering figure in state politics in the late 20th century who helped leaders from both major parties strive for public education reform, died last Thursday at the age of 88, his daughter Lt. Gov. Rachel Hunt announced. Hunt, whose career provided a prototype for the modern “education governor,” served an unprecedented 16 years as governor as the state received the rewards and stings of shifting from textiles and tobacco to a high-tech economy. Rachel Hunt’s office said that her father died peacefully Thursday at his Wilson County home. “He devoted his life to serving the people of North Carolina, guided by a belief that

School choice on rise in NC 6.1% Growth in the number of charter school students in North Carolina from 2023-24 to 2024-25
Charter schools and homeschooling have joined private schools as readily available alternatives By A.P. Dillon North State Journal RALEIGH — School choice in North Carolina continued to thrive in 2025 through the Opportunity Scholarship program, homeschooling and support from the Trump administration. The 15th annual National School Choice Week kicked things off, taking place from Jan. 26 to Feb. 1 with more than 27,600 events nationwide across 37 states. Twenty such events took place in
North Carolina. Also in January, President Donald Trump issued an executive order on “Expanding Educational Freedom and Opportunities for Families.” The number of homeschools and homeschooled students in the state rose again this year. The number of homeschools for 2024-25 rose 5.54% over 2023-24, while the number of students grew 4.82% from 2023-24 to 2024-25. Homeschooling data for 2024-25 shows there were 101,880 homeschools and 165,243 students in North Carolina. For the previous year, there were 96,529 homeschools and 157,642 students. At the start of the school year, there were 211 charters, See SCHOOL, page A2
public service should expand opportunity, strengthen communities, and always put people first,” Rachel Hunt said in a news release that also referenced “my beloved daddy and hero.” Considered a business-oriented progressive, Hunt was a giant in state government and influential in the national education reform movement of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. He was first elected governor in 1976 and, after a constitutional change, became the first North Carolina governor elected to successive fouryear terms. Following an epic U.S. Senate campaign loss to Republican icon Jesse Helms in 1984, Hunt’s political career resumed eight years later with a third term at the Executive Mansion, followed by reelection in 1996. Hunt remained active in Democratic politics after leaving office in 2001, particularly as he watched protégés such as See HUNT, page A3
