Michael is six-foot-four and his skin is quite white. He is the bellhop at our four-star hotel in San Francisco. As we arrive and clamber out of our taxis, Michael greets the eight of us professionally. Upon learning the bellhop’s name, our compadre Mike Lambright asks him if he is Michael Jordan.
We fellows snicker. The girls roll their eyes
The “ignorant act” still often works on complete strangers – such as when we pronounced jalapeno with a hard j and were corrected by another passenger on the train. The four ladies and four gent – er, boys, in our group have been burned often enough that we are very cautious, especially if Lambright is expounding.
Just a few hours ago Mike got me to bite, hard. I’m still trying to spit out the hook.
We were still on the train then and approaching San Francisco. The Pacific was not in sight but there was a body of water to our right, probably a bay. One could actually see land on the other side. Mike came charging up to my seat. With enthusiastic tones, he proclaimed “Look! The ocean!”
Like some naïve child, I say exactly what he wants me to say, “I’m guessing that’s actually a bay.”
The hearty laugh I hear next is all it takes to tell me I have been had.
We have time yet this evening to stroll a few blocks through downtown San Fran to an Italian restaurant to eat. Walking along the bustling sidewalks returning to the hotel, Mike “accidentally” collides with a post and falls backward. Remarkably, Steven is just in the right spot to catch him. A passerby checks to see if Mike is OK.
More snickers. More rolled eyes.
Early the next morning, July fourth, we get on a Big Bus tour for a hop-on, hop-off open-top tour of the city. We see Divisadero Street and some of the city office buildings, one of which is where Marilyn Monroe married Joe Dimaggio. We cruise through the famous corner of Haight and Ashbury. The automated tour guide tells us that the reason one of the neighborhoods is named the Tenderloin
is because policemen were paid more to work that beat due to the higher crime rate and thus could afford tenderloin instead of cheaper meat.
Golden Gate Park is the first stop that we hop off at. The California Academy of Science is located inside this park where we take in the aquarium and planetarium. Also the Academy of Science is a promotional display for America’s Cup, which is an international sailing race to be held in the city this summer. There is a memorable little story included in the display.
The Queen of England was watching the finish of one of the past races. She asked someone who won.
“The Americans, Your Majesty.”
“Who was second?” the Queen inquired.
“Your Majesty, there is no second place.”
Our next stop is, finally, the Golden Gate Bridge. We go across and get off on the Marin County side. From there we enjoy the view of the bay, the bridge and the skyline of San Francisco.
Then we walk across the world-famous Golden Gate Bridge. It is a 1.2 mile trek and we occasionally pause to gaze way down at the waters of the bay or to debate whether we should climb up onto the railing for a more thrilling experience. The ladies with us strongly discourage this and suspect we’re loco.
Perhaps they have some justification for this.
They say the bridge sways 27 feet side to side in the winds that whistle through here.

The inspiration for this story came on a dreary, rainy day in early winter, while I was housecleaning the attic. In the frenzy of sweeping and organizing, I came across a box of tattered, worn journals from my teenage years. I opened one and leafed through it, and many old memories resurfaced. I’m going to take these downstairs with me, I decided, resuming my sweeping.
Later, as I fed the baby, I opened one and began reading. It was as if I were opening a page of my past, taking me back to those often-turbulent girlhood years. It was a phase of life I rarely thought about anymore, caught up in the joys and challenges of young motherhood. Long after Emily slept I kept rocking, caught up in the scenarios of yesteryear.
Finally I came back to reality, and laid the baby in her crib. As I prepared supper, my thoughts were troubled. Choosing a life companion is a weighty matter, even weightier than I had imagined when I was in those shoes.
No doubt, there are girls out there who are struggling with the very same doubts that I went through. That knowledge prompts me to action.
This is my story:
I was eighteen, happy with my life as a daughter, sister, and clerk at the local dry goods store. My list of blessings included a wide circle of friends, a room of my own, and happy memories of an idyllic childhood.
Life took an unexpected turn one Sunday when my close friend, Laura, told me a startling piece of news: She was going to have her first date!
I was taken aback. To be sure, boys were a normal, everyday part of my life. I had grown up with five of them sharing the same house as I. But—dating? Surely we weren’t in that stage already!
Thus Laura entered a different world, and I was caught up in a whirlwind of emotions as I watched from the sidelines. I saw the group of youth boys in a different light as I entertained serious thoughts about the future. A part of me longed to love and to be loved, and a more serious side whispered that this was not child’s play. We were growing up, like it or not, and I was quite sure I did not like it.
In the months that followed, two more of my closest friends followed Laura’s example. One of them was Susan, and her blue eyes were troubled as she told us the latest turn of events. “Alvin asked me for my friendship,” she faltered, “and I just don’t know what to say. I can hardly bear to say no, and yet I have no special feelings for him whatsoever.”
I pictured Alvin in my mind’s eye. He was one of the oldest boys in our youth group, the victim of a broken courtship several years previous. He was more the quiet type, and not exactly good-looking. That was my impulsive opinion, and my heart went out to Susan.
Susan did say yes, but the next few months were a struggle. “He’s so…so plain,” she confided morosely. “Did you ever notice his coat? It makes him look… well, just sort of dumpy. And when it comes to gifts… he has no taste! It’s not that he doesn’t care, he just… oh, I don’t know!” she finished, dabbing her eyes with a tissue.
I made my own discreet observation. Yes, Alvin did care. He might not make an extravagant show of it, but he was sincere. His home might be more simple and unattractive than some, and his clothes were definitely old-fashioned, but he had a good heart. I truly hoped Susan would give him a chance.
Alvin and Susan’s courtship limped through several more months of struggles and indecision before coming to an end. I pitied Alvin from the depths of my soft heart, even as I gladly welcomed Susan back into our group of single friends."
"Fast forward a year, and I was the one with trembling hands and shaky knees, holding a piece of paper. No, I was not mistaken, and this was no dream. The letter was from Alvin, and he was asking for a date with me."
"What could I say? I tried to think coherently. The soft-hearted side of me wanted to make those dark eyes sparkle with happiness. He had been hurt so often—I did not want to say no. But neither did I want to accept merely out of pity. Could I, somehow, cultivate special feelings for this young man so much older than I? He was certainly no knight in shining armor. I hated to admit it even to myself, but I dreaded my friends’ reactions when I told them about this latest turn of events.

Eco-friendly landscaping helps reduce maintenance and conserve resources. That’s a win for both buyers interested in a beautiful lawn with less work and buyers who care about sustainable living. Homes with thoughtfully planned sustainable landscaping offer several selling points: improved curb appeal, reduced need for water, lowering bills, and less time spent on yard work.
Drought-tolerant landscaping requires less watering and thrives even during long, dry summers. The best drought-tolerant plant choices vary by location.
According to the Sierra Club, big, mature trees have excellent carbon-capturing capability. That’s a great feature for real estate professionals to point out when showing a house with mature landscaping to sustainability-minded buyers. And in regions with long, hot summers, large trees also keep the outdoor space cool and livable.
The National Wildlife Federation suggests aiming for 70% native plants in any lawn or landscaping overhaul. Native plants, which grow naturally in a specific region, help attract and benefit local birds, butterflies and wildlife. Native plants also tend to be low-maintenance. They don’t need much help to bloom where they’re planted, since they were planted where they naturally bloom.
CONSIDER A “NO MOW” LAWN SEED MIX
While “no mow” grass does not exist, using a slow-growing grass seed mix can dramatically reduce yard maintenance. It also reduces the gasoline or electricity used to mow the lawn. The best slow-growing grass seed for each homeowner depends on their location, so it’s a good idea to seek advice from a local garden center.
SWAP OUT MULCH FOR GROUND COVER
Ground cover refers to any low plant that grows over a large area. Like mulch, it helps keep the soil moist and reduces the possibility of soil erosion. But unlike mulch, ground cover is very lowmaintenance and can often nearly sustain itself. It grows year after year without needing to be replaced.
PLANT PRODUCE
Homeowners committed to sustainable living can take their landscaping to the next level by using compost to grow nutrient-rich vegetables and herbs. Using raised garden beds to create a potager, or small kitchen garden, offers homeowners a delicious reward for their efforts while also reducing the need for mowing.
Landscaping often includes walkways, water features, firepits, pergolas and more. Homeowners interested in sustainability should ditch the concrete and build hardscapes made from reclaimed wood, natural stone, sand or products made from recycled materials.

The pivoting front axle contours to your lawn and uneven terrain ensuring your cut stays consistent, even when the landscape isn’t. An independently suspended deck works with the pivoting front axle to let your mower glide smoothly over the landscape.

An operator decides how they want to drive. We provide options, the choice between joystick control and traditional twin-lever steering system. Our innovative joystick control makes operation easy and intuitive; just point and go. Our twin-lever steering system delivers precise, zero-turn handling that keeps you moving smoothly across all types of terrain.
This standard feature allows you access to blades quickly and effortlessly. We know mowing can be messy and maintenance shouldn’t slow you down. The stand-up deck design saves time and effort, giving you more freedom to focus on what matters most.
