Those American Pharaoh Moments
That same photo appeared on the front cover of World magazine in the 2015 Year in Photos recap. I stared at it, feeling ... what? A twinge of jealousy? They looked so victorious and exultant and well they should! They had accomplished what no one else had for the last thirty- seven years. I was only a skinny, fresh-faced lass of 19 at the time and the years since then have taught me that there are many victories in life greater than (yes, truly!) winning the coveted Triple Crown. I Think of him sometimes, though, when I’m experiencing that exultant, victorious feeling. Even something as Simple as seeing my entire beet crop (so much bigger than I’d planned) in jars. I’d stayed up until 1:00 am to finish it, then cleaned up and collapsed into bed. The next day I carried all the jars into the basement and gazed in satisfaction at the neat rows. I raised my first in jubilation as I clattered back up the Stairs. Or the ultimate - nine months of first, sickness and lethargy followed by heaviness and clumsiness, then laboring, panting, hour after hour. Then – sweet relief as a slippery, sticky bundle crowned
Of course, it isn’t the finish line at birth, merely a hurdle, and only the beginning of years of striving and failing but hopefully also chock full of American Pharaoh moments (as I’ve come to think of them.). We are allowed - we are CALLED - to rejoice in even the tiniest victories. That first time you sit bolt upright in bed, look around in confusion, glance at the clock. 6:30 am! Baby’s first full night of sleep. Bless you child- May there be many more! Little arms wrapped around your neck, “Lub you too, Mom!” When you hold up a flashcard and a tousle-haired little girl triumphantly says. the right word. When that same little girl obeys quickly and quietly (oohh - still working on that!). A quiet compliment from my husband as he thanks me for being a good mom . I don’t let him see the tears that sting my eyes. I WANT to be a good mom and his vote of confidence means the world. I imagine, hope and pray that someday I might hear a clear voice proclaim its faith in Jesus Christ on bended knee in a crowded Church room. Proclaim it in front of aunts and uncles, grandparents and cousins, Daddy ... and Mom who - in her heart - is raising her fist heavenward, celebrating with the Lord a victory that puts American Pharoah to shame. Not that I generally follow horse racing, but I have always enjoyed horses of any kind and my ears pricked up when I heard that a big bay stallion by the name of American Pharoah had won a hardfought Kentucky Derby, followed by a muddy victory at the rain-soaked Preakness. I eagerly awaited news of the Belmont Stakes and exulted with the rest of the world at the front-page photo of American Pharoah, Victor Espinoza astride, crossing the finish line alone, several lengths ahead of the rest of the pack. That photo of him and the little Mexican jockey became a favorite of mine. The horse stretched out running and Victor raising his fist, whip clenched in it, in victory.
with dark hair and a sweet face is placed, flopped rather, onto my chest. I clasp my little one close and can only close my eyes and smile, but in my head I am cantering across the finish line with my fist held high in triumph.

It was 2015 and Thoroughbred horse racing was facing a thirty-seven-year drought of Triple Crown winners. Being a Triple Crown winner means coming in first at the Kentucky Derby, The Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes - a tough job and only accomplished by the greatest of equine athletes.

What was wrong? Nothing so major, really, but too many little things form a mountain, too. It was the middle of January, and I was so tired of being cooped up in the house with a bored oneyear-old, while the skies dripped rain day after dreary day. I was tired of Rebekah’s coughing, tired of trying home remedies when nothing seemed to help. I was tired of sewing, with her trying to be as close as possible. I was tired of picture books and toys, tired of discipline, tired of Ivan’s long working hours. Where was the joy and fulfillment usually found in motherhood? I felt more like a worn-out rag than anything else. Ivan closed the stove lid. “Ready to call it a day?” he asked, looking at me.
I believe it is human to become weary with the daily grind of life. We stumble and fail, and become frustrated at our own inadequacy. Our children expose us, overwhelm us, disappoint us, baffle us. We all go through dark periods of trials and testing. But what are we made of? Can we be victorious with the tests we face, so that, if far greater trials should cross our paths, we could meet those courageously as well?
After all, my problems were so childish. Surely after a good night’s sleep things would look brighter.
Let us live everyday with a thankful heart, grateful for the wonderful privilege of being allowed to care for our loved ones, without fear of being ruthlessly snatched from our homes. Grateful for rulers who let us serve God and attend church whenever and wherever we please.
That night I had a dream. Now, I dream a lot, but usually they are fleeting, unclear ones that I immediately forget. This one was so clear and real that it made a deep impression on me.
Each day is a gift from God. If we live a life of thankfulness, those times of discouragement will automatically become less. With God’s help, come morning’s light I wanted to make a fresh start.
We were living in persecution times. I had just been rebaptized, and knew that the cost would be my life if the wrong person found out. I lived in constant suspense, as I went about my household duties. Would I be allowed to stay here with my husband and children? Or would prison and torture be my lot? Then it happened. The door burst open, and I knew immediately what these tough, burly men wanted. Had I been rebaptized? When my answer was yes, they wasted no time. I was to go with them immediately. I would trade my precious family and my home for a damp, smelly prison cell, and, most likely, a death sentence, for the sake of the Lord I had learned to love.

I nodded. I knew I should unload before I went to sleep, but I felt too weary to even go through with it.
I lay awake for a long time, replaying that dream in my mind. Persecution could reach us some day. It is touching people in other countries at this very moment. If it should come, would my convictions stand the test? If such little things drag me down now, how would I cope with the life the martyrs lived?

I hung up my broom and, with a sigh, the dustpan beside it. It was bedtime, and I felt weary from the inside-out.
That is where my dream ended, and it took several moments for me to realize that I was in bed, with absolutely nothing to be afraid of. The huge wave of relief that swept over me was quickly dimmed by the memory of my self-pitying thoughts the evening before.
