“Hail thou that are highly favored, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women.” – Luke 1:28 Can we imagine having an angel, a messenger of almighty God, greet us this way? We would likely, as Mary did, cast in our mind what manner of salutation this should be. I, like many of you, love eloquent quotes I find that the Christmas story in Luke 1 and 2 is packed with them. And then the prophesied baby is born in a stable. Nonetheless, the greatest event in the history of the world to this point that just occurred. Angels rejoice. Hey, let’s go tell … shepherds? Let’s just say God is obviously not concerned with any kind of social ladder.
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.” The parents take the child to the temple. A devout man is waiting for them there. Simeon takes young Jesus in his arms, blesses God and says, “…for mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.”
Perhaps it will slow the injuries from that sector but the real solution lies in strengthening the foundation of Christ-loving families that this nation is built on and has stood on these last few centuries. And we can strengthen it – one block at a time. If each block, if each one of us, does his own duty and prays for our leaders and lives a Godly life, the influence will spread. One block at a time. There is no block, there is no person beneath the love of the man who was put in the manger. This man, the most powerful figure in history and in the world today was born in a barn Why? Because he cares. Do you?

He changes our lives if we allow Him to. My beloved countrymen, if we want to solve our problems of shooting, fiscal cliffs and children – grown people even – who don’t know right from wrong, it all goes back to this man.

And oh! The song the angels sing to the shepherds has resounded down through the ages. It has inspired composers for two millenniums. It’s also one of personal favorite quotes of all time.
I fear trying to fix the shooting problems by tightening gun control is like restricting access to one room of the building whose entire foundation is crumbling.

For instance, take the subject of money; money is a medium of exchange. We place an agreed-upon value on money. We offer services or products in exchange for money, and we take the amount of value we place on those services and compare it to the current value of money. Many people think that if they had more money, they would be happier. However, it seems that the undisciplined person only becomes unhappier with more money. There will probably never be enough money in your bank account to buy all that you desire to have. It is well to want something and have to do without. If I could always pick up whatever it is I desire, I would rapidly find myself becoming discontented.
Numerous times I have been with people who lamented that they worked hard all their lives and now they have nothing to show for it—how is it possible that someone else has so much? First of all, let’s ponder on why we would need as much as this “someone else.” Would I really want to live the life they are living? Often times great wealth comes at the sacrifice of family, or taking advantage of employees, vendors, customers, etc. Even if this is not the case, if we have the goal of making more money, at what point does more money start to become enough money? Secondly, why do we not have more to show for our efforts? Has the money I made blessed the Kingdom of God? Do I spend mostly for myself, or do I spend to help others? Do I have a consumer lifestyle? If so, do I want to continue this trend for the rest of my life? Third, is it right to wish to have the amount of money that these “other people” have? Sometimes you hear of someone saying that if they could just hit a reset button and start
Why are we seeking more money? How about trying to figure out what is the best usage of the funds that we have now? If we really stop and think about it, what is the purpose of life? Is it to die with a large bank account, or to bless and serve others?
I still have a lot to learn about proper money management, but I have been surrounded with some wise people who are willing to spend time and teach me these principles. All blessings to God—I think that He did not intend for us to be broke all the time. I also don’t think that He wants us to be filthy rich and lording power over others because we have money. Jesus came to serve, not to be served. We would do well to follow His example.
Life is in the living. It is about the experience. Yes, it takes money to live, but let’s not give more importance to money than it deserves. Let’s be careful to not think that someone who has a lot of money is more important than someone who does not. Think of the rich man and Lazarus. If we had been there, with whom would we have chosen to spend the evening? What if you were to view money as your servant? You don’t work for your money— your money works for you. You don’t go to work because you want money—you go to work because you love your work. Money is a reward you get for doing a good job. Don’t focus on the money—focus on doing a good job, providing a service that will make someone else’s life better. Be conscious of the values that you can bring to the customer and your coworkers. Seek ways to improve their lives. Make sure the work you do is done as unto the Lord. Then, when you get paid, remember, the Lord is the One Who blesses you with these funds and your abilities. Immediately upon receipt of these funds, money should be withdrawn to be donated towards a good cause. Many people direct it towards widows, handicapped people, or people who are unable to pay their bills. From there on out, there are multiple ways of creating systems for good money management. First of all, I would strongly encourage anyone who desires to be a good steward of their money to begin tracking all of their expenses. This does not only apply to business, but also to personal accounts. After three months of tracking, review your expenses, then create a budgeting system off that. Make sure that some funds are set aside for an emergency fund, rainy day expense, or something of that account. However, you don’t want to be budgeting to be spending your entire income. This is a mistake we made when starting out. Let’s say we have a goal of getting out of debt. We have three debts that need to be paid off. Many financial advisors will recommend focusing on the smallest debt that you owe and giving it all you can, making minimum payments to the remainder of the debts; regardless of interest. Once the smallest debt is paid off, add the money that was going towards that one to the next debt and then give that one all you have. If you continue this cycle, soon you will have all but one paid off and then you have all the money that was going towards all those other debts being directed towards the last remaining one. This process takes patience, but the rewards more than make up for any sacrifices!
If you are struggling and have high interest rates, it might be wise to borrow money from someone at a lower interest. But, keep in mind—the Bible says the borrower is servant to the lender. Prov. 22:7: The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. If we borrow money, let’s make sure we pay it back in a timely manner. Let’s not make our lenders regret lending us the money. If they are related to us and “don’t need the money,” it is still our responsibility to pay it back. Let’s be diligent in doing this! If you are asked to lend money to someone in the above situation, be grateful that the person is trying to find a better way. However, keep in mind that giving someone a free handout or a “reset” can be detrimental if they do not have the commitment to repaying their debts. Someone who receives a loan at a lower interest rate who is not committed to repaying his debts may go ahead and max out his cards again, leaving him (and now you) worse off than you had found him. So, let’s use caution, and if we do lend money, let’s also be willing to teach the borrower proper money management. If you are a borrower, be willing to learn. Surround yourself with people who are content, and who—rather than living from paycheck to paycheck—always seem to have enough. The people who have enough but aren’t living “high on the hog” are good examples: we can learn a lot from them if we take the time to ask them to teach us. I like to imagine that we all have a few of those individuals within our respective church districts or acquaintances. Talk to them. Ask them for advice. Everyone enjoys helping others.

I have seen individuals who always felt that if they only had a little more money, they could make ends meet so much better. I have also heard from other individuals, who have walked the path from poverty to wealth, that if you are unable to save money making minimum wage, you never will learn to save money at all; regardless of your income status.
Something we would do well to keep in mind is that no matter how hard we try, when we get to the end we can always look back and say, “I could have done better.”
