The Epiphany Bragging Brad Backs up Few of his Many Great Boasts And, so the Beasts from the East face off the against the Best of the West. They truly do love each other and if any one of them finds himself in a tight spot, he can expect help coming from sea to shining sea. Now, though, they really, really want to win this game.

His cousins on the other team fire back quick retorts.

Their now-flaming determination to beat him is manifested in a slow shaking of their heads as they continue to toss softballs back and forth, limbering up.

The west’s lead-off batter rips a screamer down the left field line, 30 feet left of fair territory.

Bragging Brad is at it again. He is known among all his friends and relatives as a youngster who makes great boasts about his abilities and intentions – and backs up only a few of them.

“Foul?” howls Uncle Calvin on the sidelines. “If that one’s foul, they’re all foul.”

Today, he finds dry tinder for his sparks. Bragging Brad’s opponents fling back stinging remarks and put more go in their throw and spring in their swing as they warm up.

The Bontrager boys, as Bradley and his fellow eastern cousins are called, are visiting their western cousins in Montana. Competitiveness is the common denominator in this extended family, regardless which side of the Mississippi they hail from. A West vs. East ball game is suggested and instantly accepted with much enthusiasm. The trash talk begins with Bradley leading the way.

“I’m going in business,” one declares. “I’ll set up an ibuprofen stand. These grandpappies from the West will be begging for it.”

“Not so fast!” retorts a western opponent. “You eastern pups aren’t used to this altitude. I’d put an oxygen tank at second base for you – if I thought you’d ever get that far.”

“C’mon you chaps!” Bragging Brad urges. “Let’s get started. I can’t wait to see the back end of these western wimps as they chase the balls we Beasts from the East hit.”

“Foul!” cries the umpire.

These boys’ competitiveness was not stolen. Indeed, the preceding generation exhibits plenty of fire themselves.

It soon becomes apparent that the west will carry the day. Time after time, their muscular hitters chase Bragging Brad over his ladder by clobbering balls far beyond his position in center field. Meanwhile, the East is having a poor hitting day and they hit very few balls that even approach the fence.

The shellacking continues. One Westerner, after crossing home plate after his home run, turns around to watch cousin Brad climb back over the ladder into the field of play. “Thanks for putting up that ladder for us, Brad,” he calls, grinning broadly. “You really are a considerate chap.”

“Hush,” Brad says. He is much too winded to add to it.

The West ends up winning by a score of 24-3. The East promptly returns the favor the next evening on the volleyball court. The debate about who the best athletes are continues, as such debates do. No one will ever win these arguments, but they will certainly enjoy trying.

Next issue Bragging Brad goes hiking.

His bubbling energy level, when not applied to some specific task, often manifests itself in friendly bantering. Brad subconsciously knows that there is one likely way you can kindle a friendly argument – by boasting about your intentions. So if Brad needs an outlet, he often finds it by stating and restating his grand intentions, firing back at the contradictions of his opponents.

Bragging Brad really doesn’t consider himself better – he just enjoys the thrill of the argument.
