The Epiphany Happiness is all in the mind, no matter a person’s age
Whether a youngster is rolling up his pants legs to wade in the creek or sitting on the bank, soaking up the bright sunshine, watching the neighboring farmer at work in the field, these are fertile times for an imagination. It would be such fun to be a farmer, the lad muses. The tractor’s engine hums as it hauls load after load to the field. Yes, he would be a farmer. A farmer with a huge spread, hundreds of cows to milk, but most importantly, lots of land to farm. A busy man would he be, after all, it’s high time to get all those fields planted. He would be a busy and important farmer.
Once in the horse pasture, the lad spies his trusty pony, Betsy. Betsy is well-aged, gentle as a kitten and not easily urged to any amount of speed. The boy hops upon her back and grabs her halter with his left hand. Suddenly, the boy is a United States Marshal, pursuing a gang of notorious bank robbers that are legendary for never, ever getting caught. Betsy is a snorting, young black stallion with muscles of steel and eyes of fire who has never been outrun by another steed. Man and horse dodge Indian arrows as they trail the robber gang, getting closer and closer. None of the bank robber’s clever tricks work on this marshal. Their stealing days are over. Having successfully brought the bandits to justice, the boy slides off Betsy’s back and starts climbing the weed-covered hillside behind the barn, still keeping a sharp lookout for Indians. The lad spies the T-shaped abandoned handle of a garden implement lying among the weeds. This handle has potential.
The handle is a microphone and the boy is an auctioneer. He is an auctioneer like the ones he has seen selling his father’s horses at the auction barn. The difference is this lad has a few thousand horses to sell instead of a few hundred. The people in the huge crowd are almost falling over themselves to bid on the parade of excellent driving horses the boy is selling. After he knocks off a few horses for thousands of dollars, Mother calls. It’s lunch time. The horse auction is temporarily abandoned for ham sandwiches and chocolate milk, but the dreams live on. Now the las is not so young anymore and some of his dreams are coming true. He is perhaps no more important now but he is certainly much busier. He has a life he loves. Yet, as he hurries from on place to another, his eyes fall upon the sunlit hillside covered with green grass and scrubby trees. Maybe, just maybe, there is a creek flowing at the bottom. The boy’s thoughts go back. Back to sunshiny days wading the creek, and watching the farmer. He remembers Betsy and the Indians. The abandoned wooden handle comes to mind and he fondly recalls ham sandwiches and chocolate milk. Ah, happiness. It’s all in the mind, is it not….. By Loren Beachy
