The Epiphany So many interesting things to do, so little time

We discussed it in class, the second-graders and I. When each youngster was done expressing himself, the lone girl asked me, “What did you write down?”

I explained that while I didn’t write it down, I do want to do some things, including having a cup of coffee (she wrinkles her nose), going to an auction and reading a book.

The young lady got me thinking. What if the question had said, “What do you want to do yet in your life?”

What would I say to that?

Whenever one’s thoughts turn to dying, of course we must think of our only, our rock-solid true hope, Jesus Christ By believing in Him, then living his message of love, we have no reason to fear death.

Indeed, we may look forward to it.

I’ll decide where later – maybe when I’m on the broad expanse of Dakota prairie or under Montana’s huge blue sky. Maybe I won’t know until I’m in the lush meadows of Oregon or traveling the green, fertile hills and valleys of California. I’ll decide then.

Yeah, that’ll be soon enough.

Somehow, that traveling has to be financially supported though. And why not do that from home, where I have two jobs I love?

There are few things I’d like to experience from those two before I go.

My rewards from teaching have been mostly in the present – the sweet note and a grin from a third grader; the pearl of a poem by the hand of an eighthgrader. Maybe someday though, I’d like to sit under the sermon by one of “my boys” and feel maybe, just maybe, God used me to help the preacher understand the German Scripture that is inspiring to him.

Can you imagine a place more fascinating to visit that the Holy Land? What country on earth has more earth-shaking events in its history than Israel?

I’d like to cross the Sea of Galilee on a small boat.

I want to wade in the Jordan River, especially where John baptized Jesus. I want to walk the road to Damascus. I’d like to explore the Garden of Gethsemane. And I want to climb Calvary and lay my fingers on the spot where the cross stood and where the bridge was built between a perfect God and imperfect man.

The big dream remains in front of me still. Someday, I want to sit on the block in a packed auction barn with an electric atmosphere. I want to have high dollar horses going through the sale ring. And I want to sing my song while thousands follow along

While I’m aboard, the number two spot on my travel list is the Yorkshire Dales. James Herriot kindled a fire in my heart for them in his books about his veterinary life in the Dales. Tall green hills have always drawn me anyway.

The other travel desire that smolders within me, more so when I’m stressed, is to as the song says, “buy a one-way ticket on a westbound train.” Just cut loose.

With that said, there are a few things I’d enjoy doing before I fall asleep for the last time here.

Someday, I want to hear a mother reading to the child on her lap, love of literature and a good story evident both in the rising and falling voice and in the child’s gleaming eyes. I’d like to fell that, perhaps I helped kindle that love of reading in the mother and that the torch is now being passed to her child – no telling where it will lead.

The feeling also remains, that regardless what we do here that brings us pleasure, it will not even compare to what God has prepared for us
