The Epiphany Horses, volleyball and a motorcycle in the auction ring The horse market is thriving. So is the Amish community’s love of fun and fellowship. These were both evidenced by a quick trip to Cloverdale last weekend. We began in the wee hours of Friday morning. The other five goobers, Richard Slabach, Lavern Hershberger, Dave Hochstetler, Joe Lambright, and the driver, Sonny Beachy, were already on board when they picked me up. Richard and I shared a seat for this trip and slept most of the way south until we stopped for breakfast near Indianapolis. Inside the family-style restaurant, I left the full table for just a few minutes. Mistake.

Smile. This could be a fun weekend. Just remember, boys, the pen is mightier than black pepper. And you started it. We arrive at C-Bar-C Expo Center just out of Cloverdale at midmorning in plenty of time for the tack sale at noon and stallion presentation at 3 p.m. This leaves plenty of time to chat with old friends. I speak with some of my Ohio cousins as well as friends from Pennsylvania and Illinois. Auctioneer buddy David Miller from Ohio is here and we have time to chat for a bit. I plan only to spot bids at this auction and therefore it’s not necessary for me to do much preparation work. It is a relaxing time. The horse auction commences at 4 p.m. with David handling the gavel. We soon realize the horses are in demand as they sell well throughout this Friday evening portion of the auction. The real highlights are likely to come during tomorrow’s auction though. The auction is over in plenty of time for the fun and games to begin. Four volleyball nets are set up in the sale ring and in short order are filled with leaping, grunting young Amish men.

Stories are being told, acquaintances are being renewed and some good-natured ribbing is taking place. I sit with Reuben Schrock of Illinois, Lavern and Dave. Reuben is one of those classic personalities. He seems to know everyone from almost everywhere and has a good story or three to tell about many of them. The evening progresses. Things get almost a bit silly. Before long, someone gets after Richard to do his well-known motorcycle imitation. We bring him to the microphone, Kenny Hochstetler brings him a Pepsi, and he finally agrees, after three of us sit in a row in front of him so he can hide. Reuben makes sure Dave is one of the three. Reuben says Dave can cover up a lot more space than he can. At last, the anticipated moment arrives. The sound of a motorcycle comes blaring from the speakers. Volleyball players turn and eyes gaze around, trying to find the source of the sound. A dog yips. Laughter erupts. The resemblance to a real motorcycle is uncanny. Somehow, Kenny Hochstetler of Topeka and Oba Hershberger of Illinois end up with the mike. Now there are two nuts in a shell. They sit beside each other on the folding chairs, each egging the other on. Oba and Kenny end singing a song. Oba’s is a beautiful, original one and Kenny’s involves yodeling, though he has trouble remembering the second line. So is the evening going when our load leaves for the hotel. I stock up on some cold medicine before turning in for the night. I’d like to have my voice to be in good shape for tomorrow.

When I returned, there was a foreign substance floating in my coffee that looked suspiciously like black pepper. After a short, quick interrogation of the five suspects, my deductions pointed toward LaVern Hershberger, even though a few highly-innocent goofballs expressed the likelihood that it was only coffee grounds floating in my precious drink.

Many more, mostly older, not so athletically-inclined lounge on the chairs on each side of the nets. After a bit of volleyball. I felt an ominous rip occur in the seat of my pants, so I joined them. Just because they’re not playing volleyball here in the chairs doesn’t mean it’s boring.
