The Epiphany Teacher solves the mystery of the anonymous note

Inside, the text was again in block (the better to remain anonymous, my dear).

“Last week in our spelling words,” it began, “we had the word ‘secretive.’ You pronounced it ‘se-krat-iv.’

The correct pronunciation is ‘si-kret-iv.’”

Indeed.

The note, of course, was unsigned – rather like something out of an Encyclopedia Brown mystery story. There is no need to put a quarter on the gas can though. I planned to figure it out myself.

Being corrected did not bother me very long. Much better to swallow correction once and be forever wiser than to appear ignorant every time you say that word and have no one brave enough to tell you that you mispronounced it.

I remember friend Paul Devon Hochstetler telling how his teacher, Wendell Bailey, would slip a quarter onto pupils’ desks if they caught him making a mistake.

That, my friends, is the atmosphere I want.

It was the manner of correction that puzzled me a bit.

Why did she – yeah, I’m fairly certain it was a she – employ all the cloak-and-dagger stuff? I mean, the thing looked like a ransom note.

First, I wanted to determine for certain who the protagonist is here. It was time for my Sherlock Holmes hat. Without much thought, I narrowed it down to two eighth-grade ladies. You teach a group of students for more than three years; you get a feel for personalities and tendencies. Quite elementary, Watson.

In addition, I had seen one of these fine scholars hanging around the classroom after the others were gone. She is number one on the list.

Of, course, I could have simply asked the class as a whole who wrote the note and she’d probably have admitted it. This is an honest bunch. I’d prefer to have a bit more fun with it though.

Next day; recess. There was a spirited game of dare base going on. I managed to sneak around eminent eighth-grader’s base and capture her teammate.

It was her, sure enough. I feel like I could work for Scotland Yard. Now to communicate my point that she need not be, well, secretive, about correcting me.

Please enjoy my humble poetry. It describes what happened next.

This eighth-grade lady, she’s so keen – A pronunciation queen.

Her teacher slipped, her ears were upped.

“Secretive” was the word he flubbed.

A note was writ, dropped on his desk, Describing how he failed the test.

A name? She wrote none on the note “Don’t want to seem too smart,” she quotes.

Her teacher read, then had to smile, Reaching into his memory file.

He knows who ‘twas, no need to fuss, E’en though it was anonymous He thought a bit, then applied the squeeze.

“Come up here to my desk, please.

Thanks, thanks to you, I’m up to par.

1 pt. sour cream 1/2 box Velveeta cheese 1 tsp. seasoned salt 1 tsp. onion salt

1/2 c. butter, melted

Peel and cube potatoes. Cook until soft. Melt remaining ingredients together. Pour on potatoes and mix together. Pour in a roaster. Mix butter and cornflakes together; sprinkle on top. Bake at 350° for 45 minutes.

This is good without the topping. Leftovers freeze well.

Mix everything together. Put on E & S cookie sheets.

Cut into pieces. Bake at 350° for 1 hour. Pour off grease. Layer pieces in roaster and cover each layer with gravy. Keep warm in 200° oven.

Gravy: 3 cans cream of mushroom soup

4 cans milk

Heat together in a 6-quart kettle. Add 1/2 box of Velveeta and stir until melted. Mix about 2 cups country-style gravy mix with a 1 1/2 cups cold water.

Add to hot milk mixture to thicken.
