Looking Through God’s Lens Eases Frustration

We introduce counting by fives for telling time. Wilma’s classmates have soon picked it up but I see the flickering light of confusion in Wilma’s pale blue eyes. The answers coming from her mouth are not only wrong, they’re illogical. We practice and practice at the class table with her five classmates until Wilma at last seems to have some feeble grasp of the concept.

I finally send them back to their desks. Now I am behind schedule. And we have extra things to get done today.

Sigh …

All too soon, first period is over and 37 scholars and two teachers bolt out of doors to breathe some different air and do some running around.

At noon recess, the intermittent rain chases us away from our softball game. We do enjoy an exciting snatch of noon story in which Attean and Matt kill a bear. Then things start coming thickly again.

Students from the other side of the curtain join us for our largest class: Learning to Drive Safely. The objective today is to check our last lesson so we are prepared to take the test later this week. This has proven to be a patiencetester before with students from fifth through eighth grade piled into the classroom and checking each other’s work. Some of the complete sentence answers we are checking are bound to vary and I have to field questions about the acceptability of varying answers. This is understandable. It is when I get asked for the third time about an answer that is almost identical to two others read before it that I get a little frayed around the edges.

Finally, we finish.

Then it’s time for Wilma again. We read a story together – she and her classmates and I. The difficulty arises in the workbook after the story. Wilma’s grade has a list of phrases that tell what, when or where. This can be tricky for a youngster. Wilma is completely lost.

Fighting back my growing impatience, I scoot my chair over to Wilma’s desk and we exhaustively begin to discuss three phrases. And then we read the next one.

Wilma mulls it over, then looks at me pleadingly, “When?” she answers with a pronounced question mark at the end.

Groan.

It is recess time again and Wilma wants to don her shoes.

But she doesn’t know how to tie them. I sit down beside her and try to demonstrate. And demonstrate.

She. Just. Does. Not. Get. It. At long last, it is the end of the day. I help Wilma with her shoes again as she leaves. I feel like a dump truck lumbered over me.

Let’s see, I didn’t get all the class checking done. Wilma didn’t get all her work done, so I’ll have to see that she gets it done some other time. I’ll have to make sure Eli gets his books checked. I am tired.

Then I get home and see a saying I heard, jotted down and placed in my bedroom where I’ll see it every day.

“It’s not about me. If we can remember that and lose ourselves in God, we’ll have the secret to a happy life.”

Remarkable how different things look when I view them through this lens. Wilma, and all the others, are God’s children. He created their abilities and disabilities. Me? I’m just a tool here.

And now that I think about it, shining all around that dim light of confusion in Wilma’s face was a bright, glistening desire to please. She was really trying. Why didn’t I think of that?

Lord, thank you for reminding me that this is your work.

If I try to do it by myself, I’m beating my head against the wall. Just use me.

George Washington was surrounded by men far more brilliant, educated, and in many ways more capable than he was, yet these brilliant men and their comrades unanimously chose Washington to be the commander-in-chief. Why? From the numerous studies and books written about him, the most commonly cited reason is his character.

Our founders knew that if citizens neglect character, the entire public would be at risk.

One of the best measures of a democratic nation’s character is the leaders elected by the people. For most of our nation’s history, leader’s characters seemed to be the deciding factor for many Americans—particularly people of faith.

But something shifted in 1992 when President George H.W. Bush ran for reelection against Bill Clinton. The rallying cry of Bush supporters was, “Character counts” while from Clinton supporters came, “It’s the economy, stupid.” In the end, cash conquered character.

In 2011, thirty percent of white evangelical Christians said, “An elected official who commits an immoral act in his personal life can still behave ethically and fulfill his duties in his public and professional life.” In 2016, that number jumped to seventy-two percent.

America is changing faster than our minds can process. Beneath this change is a massive, oftensilent shift of character that was once the bedrock of our society.

Character must be indispensably woven into the fabric of our lives, but this does not happen by accident. We must work hard to cultivate it. Good character is built brick by brick, thought by thought, action by action, habit by habit.

Integrity At the foot of character, as its foundation, is integrity.

Warren Buffet said, “We look for three things when we hire people: intelligence, initiative or energy, and integrity. If they don’t have the latter, the first two will kill you.”

Integrity is what you are when only God and you are looking. Just like Daniel, whose integrity was absolutely unwavering, we must decide to be all in on integrity every day in every way.

Honesty A University of Massachusetts study reveals that sixty percent of adults can’t have a ten minute conversation without lying at least once.

People use euphemisms to make outright lies sound acceptable. We no longer tell lies—we “misspeak,” “exaggerate,” or “exercise poor judgment.”

Hebrews 6:18: It is impossible for God to lie. God cannot lie. He doesn’t exaggerate, manipulate, or fabricate. God cannot lie.

Humility Modern American society bombards us with encouragement to be prideful. Almost everything we hear, read, and see motivates us to look out for ourselves, elevate ourselves, get ahead, climb the ladder, be number one. That attitude is the root cause of almost every other problem we face in life.

Humility is not self-humiliation. Rather than putting yourself down, humility is putting yourself in your rightful place, which is always second place for the good of others.

The more pride you have, the more you desire to use others to serve you to make you successful.

God Is In Control

I hitched the faithful old steed to the buggy to go to church and turned the other horses out to the lush, green, early summer grass.

I let my Sunday morning thoughts be distracted by the beautiful yearling filly as she was leaving the barn. I watched her as she moved about, holding her head and neck just right. Perfect formation, perfect color…everything seemed so in place for me to finally “ring the bell” with a prize winner at the upcoming fall auction.

Coming home from church that afternoon, she caught my attention again, lying flat on her side, absorbing the sun’s warmth.

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal…

(Matt. 6:19) God is in control. All “our” (prize-winning) possessions are not ours. How will we use and manage His possessions He gives to us?

The wisdom of Solomon in Proverbs 22 says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than silver or gold.”

Her death was mysterious to me until I was “jolted” to my senses. God IS in control.

A couple of hours later we went out to do the chores, and this filly (MY prize-winner) did not come to the barn. She was still lying in the same spot, so we went out to investigate.

What! She was dead! MY “big money” filly!

The hair towards the bottom of her legs were still bunched together from the heavy dew. Her mouth was still full of grass. There were no signs of struggling. We rolled her stiff body to the other side to check for a stray bullet hole. There was no bullet hole, no blood, nothing out of place.

For one year now I had been admiring this elegant filly and dreaming of this prize winner in my barn.

I stood still for a while and pondered, my thoughts turning to God and the Scriptures. Had she died on any other day of the week, it might not have conveyed the message as loud and clear to me as it did on that Sunday afternoon. A day God had purposefully set aside as a day to worship Him, and where had my thoughts been?
