Trip West Finds Friends Playing Ball, Singing the epiphany

Modesto, Calif., spreads across a well-irrigated valley a few hours south of the Pacific Ocean. The town is prospering and growing rapidly – probably due at least partly to the proliferation of orchards surrounding it. Bee hives and dairy farms also have their niche in the area.

This is a land of milk and honey. It is also home to a wellestablished settlement of German Baptists (GBs).

The eight of us Amish youth pull into Modesto on the train in the late forenoon of this sunny July 5. As promised, my friend Lowell Beachler is there to meet us.

After Lowell and company get us settled in, he takes us to the church’s community building. There is another GB extended family holding something of a reunion here. There are volleyball nets in here, as well as basketball courts. The Rumbles welcome us warmly and we help them play volleyball.

After the volleyball game, we boys gravitate toward the basketball court. This is where it gets interesting.

These people don’t know us. We are thousands of miles from home. And there are ample opportunities for chicanery. This is way too good for friend Mike to resist.

“So what is the game called?”

“Basketball, you say?”

“What is the object of the game?”

“How do you say you score points?”

This is like Henry Ford asking how to put an automobile together.

Mike shoots a few awkward shots underhand to continue his ignorant act. Then resigned to teaching us the game, some of the friendly and athletic Rumble man agree to play Mike, Calvin and me in a three-on-three match-up.

Before we actually get started, Mike does confess that basketball is his favorite game. Then the three of us manage to win all three games. Who would blame the Rumbles for feeling like twisting our ears?

We have a good conversation with one of the patriarchs, John Rumble, who serves as a missionary in China. He relates some interesting accounts of his experiences.

John asks us four boys to sing for them. We oblige. I think we owe them that. We stand together and sing the “Lob Lied” (Praise Song”) to the tune of “Sweet Hour of Prayer.” Rumble and Co. reciprocate by singing for us and send us off with a sno-cone.

That evening we enjoy our time around the campfire at Jon and Bev Flora’s place, where our four ladies are staying.

The ice is melting and our hosts are beginning to realize that some of our number have an ornery streak. We

spend time on important things, too –singing hymns together. Per their request, we sing a verse of our “Lob Lied” in our normal slow fashion.

The next day we awake to a gorgeous Saturday morning in California. Oh, this is pleasant!

Lowell and his wife, Doris, take us through Modesto and to the home of Tim and Mitzi Frantz.

We get a hint of what’s in store for us there as we pull in the driveway past a field with Tim’s zebra herd in it.

From the back seat, Mike comments on the strange spots that herd of horses has. Calvin, Steven and I have been burned way too often to even think about rising to that one. But Lowell hasn’t.

“Those are zebras,” he corrects Mike.

Then Lowell realizes that is exactly what Mike wanted him to say. This 82-year-old, warm Christian man threatens to wrestle Mike down and pound him. He has a grin soon afterward, though.

Tim Frantz greets us and leads us up his shop stairs to his three trophy rooms. Shock and awe. The other boys (who know much more about these matters than I) say Cabela’s pales in comparison.

An entire stuffed giraffe holds court in a room with an elephant, hippopotamus, rhinoceros and an alligator. One entire wall is filled with trophy whitetails. These are right beside the head mount of an albino buffalo. These are all animals the Frantz’s have hunted down for a jawdropping total of 233 different species including the ones still coming from the taxidermist.

Mitzi shows us her collection of Flow Blue china before we leave.

There is a youth gathering tonight.

Next time: How to be late for church twice in the same day? Our accompanying ladies demonstrate.

Due to the nature of this court-ordered liquidation auction, some items may be removed from the sale up to one week prior to the auction date. If you are traveling from out of state, please verify item availability through the online catalog before finalizing your travel plans.

Every so often, a buyer shows up at your door before your home is even for sale, or the local grapevine finds the right buyer for that plot of land you own, or maybe someone saw the “For Sale by Owner” sign you had out front. Whatever the case, here at RES, there’s a type of deal we call a “transaction only”. This less-common option is for folks who privately agree on a purchase price and then ask us to carry out the paperwork. But how does this transaction come together? Surprise, surprise: you’ll need to talk money. Even further, you’ll need to agree on money. In this private negotiation, both parties have the privilege to set their price, just as they share the challenge of doing so without scaring the other off. Ideally, a purchase price feels fair to both parties, but sometimes emotions or the fear of losing the deal can tip the scales, leading a Seller to discount the true value of their property or the Buyer to overpay for it. (There are exceptions where a price is intentionally favorable to one party who may be family or otherwise deserving.) A professional can bring local market knowledge to consult and negotiate on your behalf while keeping the high-stakes negotiation grounded in reality, not emotion. Local market knowledge isn’t just about knowing recent sales — it’s also understanding what gives a property its value, from neighborhood trends to unique features or current buyer demand. In a situation where you have doubts or feel like you’re negotiating blindly, it’s worth contacting a professional who can help you explore your options. After all, this transaction could be one of the few you’re a part of in your lifetime, whereas we handle them daily. If you needed a tooth pulled, would you try it yourself or call a dentist?

If you feel confident negotiating on your own, remember that it’s not always just about the price. Agreeing on terms like repairs, moving the closing date, or even adding specific appliances or niceties can help balance out a purchase price that’s slightly off the mark. Small adjustments like these can make the deal feel fairer to both sides without a large price shift.

Once all agreements are made, one party —typically the Seller— reaches out to our office or one of our agents to make the transaction a reality. First, we have each party meet out our office to sign a purchase agreement and the buyer submits any earnest money that serves as a deposit towards their purchase. Then, our team communicates with the title company and any banks, lenders, or other parties involved while monitoring the transaction and helping to tackle any obstacles all the way to the closing table. By letting us handle the details, you can focus on the excitement of what’s next.

“As a Shipshewana native, I have a deep appreciation for community. Real estate is more than just a transaction to me—it’s about helping people find a place to build their future. I strive to serve every client with integrity, humility, and care, guided by values that put people first and relationships above transactions.”

Tale of Two Friends and a Tent

A few years ago my good friend John and I both had about a month’s gap between our summer and winter jobs. We decided to make the most of it and made some quick plans to hike the Appalachian Trail for two weeks.

We went to town and procured all the supplies we needed: a miniature cookstove, hiking poles, sleeping mats, etc. The only thing we did not get was a tent. John said they have a tent at home—no sense in buying another one.

The day before our departure, we stood in John’s living room, our supplies scattered all around us. In the middle of the mess stood a red tent with large black spots. On its sides were small black wings, and it even had fake antennae above the door flap. It was a literal ladybug in the form of a tent.

“What do you think?” John asked hopefully. “Do you think it’ll work?”

“Well, it’s not quite what I had pictured,” I said slowly.

“Oh, it’ll be great! Just imagine what our fellow hikers will think when they see two hardcore adventurers setting up a ladybug tent!” John was bubbling over, and I began to catch his enthusiasm. It would be interesting to watch people’s reactions when we crawled out of that thing in the mornings.

“Do we fit?” I asked.

“Only one way to find out.” He was already on his way inside.

I followed.

If we lay side by side, our heads were against one end and our feet gently pressed against the other end.

In between us there was just enough room to pile our gear for a makeshift “curtain”. It was perfect.

I had only one more concern. “Is it waterproof?”

“Well, Jimmy slept out on the lawn with it a couple times, and I think it sprinkled once or twice and he didn’t get wet much, or not that I remember,” John replied.

My fears were little diminished by this broad reassurance. I crawled out of the tent and made a brief inspection. There were a couple snags here and there, but nothing major that I saw.

“We’re taking duct tape along, right?” I asked.

“Yep.” John held up the roll.

“Maybe we can slap some of that on some of these small holes if they’re a problem,” I said.

“Sounds good to me,” he replied. “So it’s settled. We’re taking the ladybug tent!”

* * *

The first week of hiking went great. We covered approximately ninety-five miles and were making good time; we had high hopes of reaching our destination on the appointed day. It had rained only once—the first night— and we had been safe and snug inside a three-sided shelter the whole time. So our ladybug tent had yet to be tried, which brings us to the second of August.

It started off well enough. We hiked in Georgia for the first five miles, then passed into North Carolina, steadily gaining altitude all the while. By late afternoon we were above five thousand feet and the sun was shining less and less. We descended to 4,500 feet to spend the night. It was slightly warmer here, but we were still enveloped in clouds and the air contained a damp chill.
