People Are People; Different, Yet Somehow the Same the epiphany

It sure is different down here in Mexico. Different, I mean, than I’m accustomed to in Hoosier country, USA. That certainly doesn’t mean one of them is wrong, but they sure are different.

For one thing, the man at the filling station is pumping our gas for us, a custom no longer practiced at home. It seems to be the norm around here though.

Friend Eli and I are visiting an “English School” of the Old Colony Mennonites living in Mexico. It is taught by five ladies who are fellow Yankees. School is in recess for this afternoon here in June 2011 and the teachers and a few local Mennonite lads are accompanying us on a tour of the Mennonite community.

After the van is filled with gas, we visit the local Mennonite museum where we learn about their history and how it came about that they migrated to Mexico in the 1920’s

Before the outing is over, we visit a Mennonite cheese factory and a Mennonite machine shop. The machine shop is Fehr Manufacturing, where they make various kinds of farm equipment. They have almost 50 employees.

The two Mennonite lads, Enrique and Peter, take us to Cuauhtemoc to eat. That’s Cuauhtemoc in Mexico, the land of fiery food. We decide to see who can eat the spiciest food. Boys will be boys.

The restaurant is a nice one. The waiter, of course, is Mexican, so Enrique and Peter have to translate for us gringos. Using translators is a clumsy way of doing things, but necessary sometimes.

Our food is, guess what, spicy and Pennsylvania wins the contest as he also adds chili peppers to his meal.

Back to school. After our meal, we head to the school for the evening session where Enrique and Peter are students in the advanced class.

These boys have impressed Eli and me with their maturity throughout this trip. They’re 16. I fear they have it all over me when I was that age.

The evening session contains a few more adults than the two morning classes. Following devotions, Eli and I join teacher Mary’s class and help with their discussion on holiday celebrations. Then Mary opens things up for questions. Enrique’s brother asks me how auctioneers

talk so fast. Smile. The questions auctioneers get asked are not that different in Mexico. I try to explain a bit.

A local hotel is where we spent the night. We enjoy the morning session at school yet and say our goodbyes before loading into Peter’s Suburban and pointing our noses north.

We make tracks for the border. At at least one place we see armed policemen patrolling on the banks of vehicles. This is not Emmatown, Dorothy.

A roadside stand en route is where we get our lunch. Someone from the food stand washes our windows while we’re here. We enjoy the quesadillas and burritos.

Eventually we make it to the border town of Juarez and cross the Rio Grande, which is dry. Traffic is backed up here on the bridge waiting to cross the border into El Paso, Texas.

When we finally make it to the gate, we are asked a few questions and our documents are inspected. Then we are cleared to go through. Relief.

It does feel good to be back in the U.S. of A.

We find the train station and I say goodbyes to Peter and Eli. I plan to take the train on west to meet up with buddies Andrew and Calvin again.

Peter takes Eli to the Greyhound station. Eli is heading eastward and home

Yes, things are different in Mexico. People are still people though, and we saw examples of Christians living their faith admirably, including sacrificing to be hospitable to their visitors. Hopefully, that is a common denominator for us all.

VALLEY HARNESS & WELDING

Every so often, a buyer shows up at your door before your home is even for sale, or the local grapevine finds the right buyer for that plot of land you own, or maybe someone saw the “For Sale by Owner” sign you had out front. Whatever the case, here at RES, there’s a type of deal we call a “transaction only”. This less-common option is for folks who privately agree on a purchase price and then ask us to carry out the paperwork. But how does this transaction come together? Surprise, surprise: you’ll need to talk money. Even further, you’ll need to agree on money. In this private negotiation, both parties have the privilege to set their price, just as they share the challenge of doing so without scaring the other off. Ideally, a purchase price feels fair to both parties, but sometimes emotions or the fear of losing the deal can tip the scales, leading a Seller to discount the true value of their property or the Buyer to overpay for it. (There are exceptions where a price is intentionally favorable to one party who may be family or otherwise deserving.) A professional can bring local market knowledge to consult and negotiate on your behalf while keeping the high-stakes negotiation grounded in reality, not emotion. Local market knowledge isn’t just about knowing recent sales — it’s also understanding what gives a property its value, from neighborhood trends to unique features or current buyer demand. In a situation where you have doubts or feel like you’re negotiating blindly, it’s worth contacting a professional who can help you explore your options. After all, this transaction could be one of the few you’re a part of in your lifetime, whereas we handle them daily. If you needed a tooth pulled, would you try it yourself or call a dentist?

If you feel confident negotiating on your own, remember that it’s not always just about the price. Agreeing on terms like repairs, moving the closing date, or even adding specific appliances or niceties can help balance out a purchase price that’s slightly off the mark. Small adjustments like these can make the deal feel fairer to both sides without a large price shift.

Once all agreements are made, one party — typically the Seller — reaches out to our office or one of our agents to make the transaction a reality. First, we have each party sign a purchase agreement and the buyer submits any earnest money that serves as a deposit towards their purchase. Then, our team communicates with the title company and any banks, lenders, or surveyors involved while monitoring the transaction and tackling any obstacles all the way to closing day. By letting us handle the details, you can focus on the excitement of what’s next.

To everyone in the Michiana area who stepped through our doors this April and May—thank you. Offering our transaction-only service at no cost was a small way to show we’re not just here to do business—we’re here to be part of the community. Whether you were wrapping up a straightforward sale or navigating a more layered deal, it was a pleasure to meet you, work alongside you, and help get the job done.

In total, we assisted with 15 transactions, helping nearly thirty families wrap up the sale or purchase of a property. Our hope for this service is to take something that often feels overwhelming and complicated and make it simple. We continue to offer this year-round at a fixed rate fee—If you’re handling a private sale or need help getting to the closing table, give us a call at (574) 821-7653.
