Mississippi Trip Full Of Work, Games And A Mishap the epiphany

It is the last day of 2014 in Mississippi. I am standing on the uppermost step of a wobbly six-foot aluminum stepladder, straining to reach the fascia at the peak of the gable. I suddenly go over center. My paintbrush and cup of bright blue paint go flying as I tumble to the ground.

Thankfully, I have a soft landing on the Mississippi turf and it appears the biggest damage is some splotches of bright blue paint on Doby Jones’ white door frame.

Today is Wednesday and therefore our third work day here in Mississippi. Three van loads of Amish youth, one from Nappanee, one from Pennsylvania, and one from here in the civilized part of the country, are spending a week in rural Mississippi working on the houses of poverty-stricken locals.

Do not laugh when I refer to our area as being civilized. Had you met the groups from Nappanee and Pennsylvania, you would know exactly what I mean. They are crazy.

But they can work. And they do. We are pleasantly surprised at how quickly our list of projects gets finished. We have changed the roof and built a smokehouse here at Doby’s place and are now putting the finishing touches on the painting job. That means that only Ivan and I are here now; hence, a small audience for my acrobatics. Doby’s house ends up a bright blue with sharp white trim.

The local Holderman Mennonites have invited us to their school to dine on catfish on this New Year’s Eve.

The Mennonites, including Dean Geisbrecht and Darryl Koehn and their families, greet us warmly and feed us fish and hush puppies.

My first helping of catfish is tasty. As is the second and third. These are domestic catfish that the Mennonites raised in their ponds. After supper, Dean explains the industry to us briefly. We enjoy some sharing time, tour the school, and sing.

The Holdermans can sing. That’s like saying Lebron James can play basketball. In fact, these Holdermans are exceptionally gifted singers who are a joy to listen to.

Some of our group then leave for a New Year’s Eve service at the Baptist Church across town. They later tell

us it was well worth it. Most of us stay at the school and play volleyball and basketball in the Holdermans’ gym. Our rotating schedule of play also leaves us time to get acquainted with the Holderman youth off the court. We thoroughly enjoy ourselves until shortly after 2015 comes.

Then we load up and go back to Mashulaville Dormitory, where we have been staying. We, as young, gung-ho competitors are wont, play games yet before retiring late.

We also rise late and wait to eat breakfast until 9 a.m. New Year’s morning. After eating, each one of us shares what inspired us this week. Some profound thoughts some out of this session. Mary Miller mercifully cuts her sermon short and there is no need to bring her any liquid refreshment.

The only work we do today is making a bit of firewood. Then we load up and go tour Waverly, a local plantation mansion.

This elegant, four-story white house used to be the head of a monstrous, prosperous cotton plantation. Forty acres still remain with the house and it is owned by a Robert Snow, a white-haired man who lives here and is around while a guide gives us a tour. Seven hundred mahogany spindles were used in the railing for the gloriously-curved staircases inside. We also hear some fascinating history about the mansion from the guide, including the story of the 4-year-old lass who died by falling down the stairs one night. People claim they still hear her saying “Momma, Momma,” sometimes. We notice nothing of the sort during our visit. When we return to the dorm, little do we know we are in for one of the highlights of the week, a game of “What Would You Do If …”

A Tomato-Flavored Lesson

The temperature was high and motivation was low. My brother Matt and I were put to work picking tomatoes and green beans. Our lack of sisters taught us many exciting tasks, like pulling weeds and picking beans—plants we placed on roughly the same level.

I was making my way through the row of tomato cages, and occasionally I found a tomato that was partly eaten or rotten or otherwise mushy. True to my opportunistic nature, I lobbed these treasures over the four rows of corn into the green bean patch where my brother was picking beans. At first he ignored my pot shots (being older and more mature), but soon he was tossing them back.

There was one big fat tomato that had made a few bombing sorties already, and the split down the middle showed it. The chance was too—well, juicy—so Matt took the red blob and stalked around the corn. I saw him coming, and jumped behind a tomato cage. In light of his poor throwing abilities, Matt gave up and threw the blob in my general direction. At that very second I decided to check his location by sticking my head out from behind my tomato cage.

Matt calls that the best throw he’s ever made, and I agree. The instant I peeked from my bunker, my face was blasted by the tangy, sticky juice. It also turned red,

but not from the tomato bits. The conflict escalated quickly from there. I shall kindly omit the details of the frenzy that ensued; Mom was soon alerted of the unrest in the garden and had to come and make peace.

Looking back now, I can clearly see the lesson of this incident: had I been obedient in my task, humbly minding my own business, I could have avoided strife. I would have gotten more work done. I could have wiped sweat off of my brow instead of tomato juice. I could have felt the satisfaction of having done my best and finished the job right.

But, rather than dwelling on lost opportunities, we should learn from our mistakes and avoid making them again.

SUSTAINABLE LANDSCAPING IDEAS

an excerpt from indiana native leandra beabout for national assoc. of realtors

Eco-friendly landscaping helps reduce maintenance and conserve resources. That’s a win for both buyers interested in a beautiful lawn with less work and buyers who care about sustainable living. Homes with thoughtfully planned sustainable landscaping offer several selling points: improved curb appeal, reduced need for water, lowering bills, and less time spent on yard work.

THINK DROUGHT TOLERANT— Drought-tolerant landscaping requires less watering and thrives even during long, dry summers. The best drought-tolerant plant choices vary by location.

PLANT MORE TREES— According to the Sierra Club, big, mature trees have excellent carboncapturing capability. That’s a great feature for real estate professionals to point out when showing a house with mature landscaping to sustainability-minded buyers. And in regions with long, hot summers, large trees also keep the outdoor space cool and livable.

SELECT NATIVE PLANTS— The National Wildlife Federation suggests aiming for 70% native plants in any lawn or landscaping overhaul. Native plants, which grow naturally in a specific region, help attract and benefit local birds, butterflies and wildlife. Native plants also tend to be low-maintenance. They don’t need much help to bloom where they’re planted, since they were planted where they naturally bloom.

CONSIDER A “NO MOW” LAWN SEED MIX— While “no mow” grass does not exist, using a slowgrowing grass seed mix can dramatically reduce yard maintenance. It also reduces the gasoline or electricity used to mow the lawn. The best slow-growing grass seed for each homeowner depends on their location, so it’s a good idea to seek advice from a local garden center.

SWAP OUT MULCH FOR GROUND COVER— Ground cover refers to any low plant that grows over a large area. Like mulch, it helps keep the soil moist and reduces the possibility of soil erosion. But unlike mulch, ground cover is very low-maintenance and can often nearly sustain itself. It grows year after year without needing to be replaced.

PLANT PRODUCE— Homeowners committed to sustainable living can take their landscaping to the next level by using compost to grow nutrient-rich vegetables and herbs. Using raised garden beds to create a potager, or small kitchen garden, offers homeowners a delicious reward for their efforts while also reducing the need for mowing.

OPT FOR LOCAL, SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS— Landscaping often includes walkways, water features, firepits, pergolas and more. Homeowners interested in sustainability should ditch the concrete and build hardscapes made from reclaimed wood, natural stone, sand or products made from recycled materials.

A Turning Point

My heart pounded like a drum as I thought about it. Why would he want to eat lunch with me? I’m so young and he’s so old. He could be on display at an antique store, and here he is asking me to eat lunch with him.

The 11:30 bell signaled our lunch break as I made my way to him. “Hey, Urie,” I said. “Here I am.”

Great memories encompass me from my childhood to my present state. My parents had a stable marriage, I had a great group of friends, a loving tribe of siblings, and I never went to bed hungry. I had more than I needed. Despite all of that, I still had my struggles. Wrong choices led me down wrong paths and before I knew it, I was stuck. I began habits that were hard to get rid of, and the frustrations began. Sin had a firm grip on me. Unsure of what to do, I began to pray.

The days turned into weeks and the weeks into months, but my battle continued. What should I do? I feel so alone. Life seems so bland.

I kept praying. After countless prayers and endless battles, hope was on the horizon. Or, more accurately, Urie was on the horizon.

Urie Sharp was no ordinary man. He was an elderly gray-haired grandpa from the Hartville area who had a mission and a vision of listening and helping people who were struggling. This man was a difference-maker. Urie had a way of connecting with men ranging from the premature teenage years that I was in to the dustyhaired fellow who worked across the aisle.

After we began our weekly session of having our lunch together and sharing our ups and downs, Urie soon began talking to me about the battle I was facing—all without me telling me about it. Being honest brings out the best in any situation, and such was the case this time. The truth isn’t always the easiest thing to say, but it’s bound to always produce the best results.

I owned up to my struggles and Urie began his quest of helping me eliminate the sin in my life. I was ashamed at first. There wasn’t any fun in confiding my failures and weakest moments with someone else, but I had learned from the past that I wasn’t going to win this battle on my own.

Urie confided some struggles with me that he faced over the years, helping me sense he was a man to be trusted. He didn’t spend our half-hour-sit-downs point-

ing fingers at me and my problems; he assured me that I’m not alone on the battlefield. With Urie telling me of his not-so-proud moments, it helped me in sharing mine.

Time went on and my appreciation for the gray-haired generation multiplied. Urie gave me Bible verses to memorize and other writings that contained wisdom from the aged warrior in him.

The days merged into weeks, the weeks turned into months, and soon I saw the sin that had once held a firm grip on me disappear. God was securing me; Satan was being defeated.

By the grace of God and with the help of Urie, a frustrated young man overcame a bad habit in his life. How did Urie know to begin talking with me about this particular struggle? Did he sense that I was alone? I’ll never know, but I do know I have no regrets in sharing my struggles with him.

The biggest and hardest step in resolving sin doesn’t have to be that hard. Swallow your pride and confess your struggle with someone.

Regardless if you’re a teenager, parent, grandparent, or just simply a human being enduring a struggling season and stuck in sin—God can help. God is big. Tell a trusted friend about it, fast about it, and most important of all, tell God about it! He is bigger than anything.

In some cases prayers are answered overnight, but in other cases—such as mine—prayers can take months or years to be answered. Trust God. Give Him space. Open your heart and He will help. Pray. Pray. Pray. When all else fails, pray some more—your turning point might be one prayer away!
