“I got full dentures in my 30s, and over time they became a problem. At first, they fit well, but eventually, I had to eat softer foods and faced embarrassing moments. Dental Implants changed everything. Now I feel normal again, able to speak confidently and enjoy meals like everyone else, without resorting to soft foods and soup.”

Transform Your Life With a New Set of Teeth At Michiana Dental Implants

Behind the Smiles: Dr. Jeffrey S. Mader’s Passion for Dental Implants

For over 20 years, Dr. Jeffrey S. Mader has been dedicated to transforming lives through dental implants. Specializing in this area of dentistry has not only been a fulfilling journey for Dr. Mader, but it’s also become his greatest passion within the field. “It is the most gratifying aspect of dentistry,” he says, and his commitment to providing the best possible care shines through in every procedure.

Dr. Mader’s extensive training includes a two-year comprehensive program at The Misch Institute, where he honed his skills in implant dentistry. As one of the leading implant specialists, he has also earned certification in multiple dental implant protocols, with a special focus on the Hybridge Protocol. “The Hybridge Protocol is superior in many ways,” Dr. Mader explains. “It’s a fully digital process from start to finish, which ensures quicker and more precise results.”

One of Dr. Mader’s greatest accomplishments is his role in training hundreds of dentists across the nation in the Hybridge Implant System. This advanced technique requires significant technical skill, and many of the dentists he trains find it to be the perfect solution to the frustrations they face with other approaches. “I love spreading the word about Hybridge,” Dr. Mader says. “It checks all the boxes—high precision, predictability, and it’s patient-friendly. Plus, patients never have to go

A typical dental implant procedure with Dr. Mader follows four easy steps: first, a smile analysis and design to create a natural and beautiful smile; second, the removal of existing teeth and placement of implants; next, a scan appointment to prepare for your final smile; and finally, we deliver your beautiful, new smile. ‘It’s that simple, and the results speak for themselves,” he adds.

For many patients, the idea of dental implants can seem daunting, especially if they haven’t seen a dentist in years due to negative experiences. Dr. Mader’s compassionate, patient-centered approach makes all the difference. “We never judge or make someone feel bad about their teeth. We’re here to help,” he says, ensuring that each patient feels comfortable throughout the process.

Dental implants are truly life-changing. They restore confidence, allow patients to enjoy the foods they love, and eliminate the pain and embarrassment caused by bad teeth or loose dentures. For those hesitant about cost, pain, or recovery time, Dr. Mader offers reassurance. “Over 20 years, dental implants cost about 30 cents per meal. That’s a tremendous value!”

With a career focused entirely on dental implants, Dr. Mader takes pride in changing lives every day. “I am privileged to do what I love,” he says. Through his expertise and dedication, Dr. Mader continues to make a lasting impact on his patients’ lives—one smile at a time.

Baling Hay Keeps the Boredom Away the epiphany

Voltaire, the French thinker, said “Work keeps at bay three great evils – boredom, vice and need.”

Well, I’m not bored now.

Sweat rolls down my face. I wipe it hastily while I charge from the back of the moving hay wagon to the front. The goal is to yank the next bale onto the wagon before it tumbles off the chute and onto the ground because the baler is shoving the next bale through. Blisters are forming.

Sister Emily is the teamster handling the four horses pulling the baler and attached wagon. Her natural horsemanship stands her in good stead (most of the time) as she guides the caravan in circles gobbling up the rows of hay.

Hay baling is a bit of an art. The hay must be dried so as not to rot after being compressed into bales. However, the savvy farmer doesn’t want his hay so dry that it loses nutritional value and palatability for his stock. The whole operation becomes a bit of a juggling act, including watching the weather forecast for an idea of when it will be sunny, cloudy or (look out) rainy. The farmer needs a feel for when the hay is ripe to cut as well as dry enough to bale. Experience helps.

My dad, he of the uncanny haying instincts, is not home today. The final decisions are up to me. Some of our 10 acres was cut yesterday, some two days ago. Will all of it be fit to bale today? Rain is forecast for tomorrow. ‘Twould be a comfort to have it all in the barn.

I check both parts of the field. There is little doubt that the first will be ready. The second is iffy.

I decide. We’ll rake the first part straight away and wait just a bit to rake the rest. Then we’ll try to bale it all.

Sisters Emily and Ramah rake while I prep our baler. This is the first time it will be used this season, so I gas it up, check that it has twine and grease it.

The girls bring their teams to the barn from across the road where they had been raking. We eat a quick lunch. Then it’s time to hit it.

I used to dread haying time. Now it’s almost a rush, if things click. Emily and Ramah go back to the field to rake the second part, while Mom, Grace and I harness and hitch the big four-horse team to the baler. A few empty wagons bring up the rear as our procession crosses the road, makes its way back the driveway between the neighbors’ houses, and enters the field.

Mom takes Emily’s spot on the rake and Emily grabs the lines at the head of the baling column. We came. We saw. We baled.

We begin with one of the outside rounds. My job, on the wagon, is to monitor the quality and weight of the bales, make adjustments to the baler accordingly and stack the bales on the moving wagon.

Any farm-raised boy can do this stacking, but it is still gratifying to see a well-balanced load rise on the wagon as I stack the bales like pieces in a puzzle.

Emily’s job, steering the horses pulling the baler- while not so physically strenuous, still takes a level of skill, especially on the “inside-out” left turns we’re making on this first round. As we go past one corner, I see that Emily didn’t get it all. I think there’s probably enough left on the ground to feed Job’s camels for a day. I don’t say it out loud to Emily. Uh, uh. Not yet.

Emily does guide the baler well, though, and gets most of the hay gobbled up. She really is a good horsewoman. This just makes it more fun when she messes up occasionally.

We finish the outside round, switching wagons as they are filled, and point the baler toward the middle of the field. Emily raked this part earlier today and didn’t listen – or she misunderstood – or we had a miscommunication on how to rake it. Bottom line, a few of the rows in the middle are thicker than they should be. Now Emily has to hold the horses back to a slow walk and even stop them sometimes so the baler can keep up.

There is nothing slow about the rear of the baler though. With all this hay going in its mouth, our trusty New Holland is kicking out bales at a rapid clip. Beachy scrambles to keep up on the wagon.

At one point, the raked row is actually so wide the baler can’t reach all the hay. I jump down and quickly help Emily fix the problem. I do mention to my sister how unfortunate it is that she can’t blame someone else for the raking job. Promptly, I get back on the wagon. No point in giving Emily time to think of a retort.

We do get finished though, and when darkness has fallen, the hay is all baled.

Truly, it was hard work. Strange how good it feels.

Loren Beachy is an auctioneer and real estate broker with Bright Star Realty and Auctions in Middlebury. He was formerly an elementary school teacher at a local parochial school teacher for eight years. Some of his stories were written a few years ago while teaching. He enjoys fast horses, hot peppers, and strong coffee.

A Gem from the Neighbors

Crack! The crisp sound of the plastic ball meeting plastic bat rang through the crisp fall air. As the pork chops sizzled on the grill, Lorene watched Emerson and Rowen practice their tee ball skills.

Skinny, curly-haired eight-year-old Emerson was shy and had a calm demeanor. Six-year-old Rowen was the exact opposite; husky, talkative, and energetic. Rowen never missed a chance to holler across the street to inform Lorene what the family was up to or inquire what she was doing. “What are you grilling tonight?” he had yelled just a minute ago.

The crack of the bat kept up a steady rhythm as the boys took turns pitching and batting. Lorene smiled when she heard Rowen give Emerson specific directions on the next pitch in a no-nonsense, coach-like voice.

Emerson took a step back, flexed his skinny arm and aimed carefully. Whoosh… the white ball sailed toward Rowen but was a tad too high and flew straight over his right shoulder. Rowen forgot his coach-like voice and started yelling at Emerson, hurling unkind names and naughty words at him. Poor Emerson stood in shocked silence.

The pork chops were done, but Lorene could not resist lingering at the grill when she saw Mr. Lash come around the side of the house where he had been washing the car.

In a few slow strides Father had a firm grip on Son’s shoulder. “Did I just hear right?” he inquired. Rowen shrugged. Emerson nodded. Tall and lanky Mr. Lash got down on one knee, eye level with his little lad. In a stern yet loving way he told him, “We are not that kind of people. We do not use words like that!”

Feeling a bit intrusive, Lorene gathered the pork chops and grilling utensils and slipped quietly through the French doors as “we are not that kind of people” rang in her ears.

Lorene shared the scenario with her sister over supper. As she did the dishes, she contemplated the phrase and decided it could be used often to define more things than naughty words.

As Plain Folks, what kind of people are we? Are we who our neighbors think we are? Are we like Rowen and use words we shouldn’t when upset? Do we wear clothes that belong to worldly people? Are we the same kind of people when on vacation as we are at home? Do we join in the flow of “live and let live,” afraid to stand for what is right? The thoughts churned endlessly through Lorene’s brain when suddenly she recalled the days of her youth.

How the phrase “we are not that kind of people” would have served her! With shame she recalled the unnecessary, so-called “fun” events she had attended; the choice of music and clothes she had made, among other things.

With a burst of zeal, Lorene determined to remember the soul-stirring words of Mr. Lash. If he, as a worldly English man, lived out and instilled this phrase in his young sons, she could take it to heart and live it out in her life too!

“We are not that kind of people”—a gem shared unawares by Mr. Lash. Applicable in lots of ways to the Amish neighbors across the street.

TRAINING EQUIPMENT

Snow, slush, and cold temperatures make it hard to believe spring is just around the corner. But that’s exactly why now is the best time to get ahead of it. A little effort indoors while the weather is still unpredictable means you’ll be free to focus on outdoor projects, gardening, and enjoying the warmer days when they finally arrive. A few intentional changes made now can breathe new life into your space and, lucky for you, don’t include tearing down walls or breaking the bank.

Start by decluttering—but not just for the sake of getting rid of things. Focus on what makes your home feel calm and functional. Rotate out heavy winter textiles for lighter fabrics, swap darker decor for fresh greenery or soft neutrals, and let in as much natural light as possible. Even small changes, like rearranging furniture or washing throw blankets and pillows, can make a space feel entirely different. These simple updates create a sense of order and freshness that can set the stage for other projects down the road.

Now that the space has been decluttered, it’s easier to dust, scrub, and sweep out those overlooked areas. Deep cleaning windows, baseboards, floors, and neglected corners makes a surprising difference. And if you’ve been putting off minor repairs—like fixing a squeaky door or touching up paint—tackling them now will make your home feel more put-together and enjoyable, giving you the capacity to take on larger projects with a clear mind.

If you want to take it a step further, consider a mini-makeover for high-impact areas. Painting cabinets, switching out hardware, or updating light fixtures are all relatively simple changes that pack a punch. Refreshing entryways or mudrooms can make your home feel more inviting functional; cleaning or switching out the doormats, putting away any extra winter gear, or even creating storage solutions that keep your home organized year-round can set the tone for the season.

At the end of the day, a spring refresh isn’t about chasing trends—it’s about making your home work better for you as the seasons shift. A little effort now means a smoother transition into the busy months ahead, whether you’re settling in for another year, gearing up for a move, or just making the most of the space you have. And if this refresh has you thinking about bigger changes, well… that’s another conversation worth having.

Should you rent and save or buy as soon as you can afford the down payment? Well, it depends. If buying a home would leave you stretched thin—barely covering the mortgage, plus property taxes, maintenance, and those inevitable surprise repairs—renting while you build up savings might be the smarter move. But if you can afford the upfront costs and the long-term expenses, buying could help you start building equity instead of paying someone else’s mortgage.

The trick is figuring out what “saving up” actually looks like. If renting gives you room to put money aside and home prices aren’t rising too fast, waiting can work in your favor. But if rent keeps going up or home values are climbing quicker than you can save, buying sooner—even with a smaller down payment—might make more sense. The best choice for you is the one that keeps you financially comfortable, gives you options down the road, and works for your lifestyle. Thanks for writing in to us here at Bright Star RES; your $100 gift card is on its way to you! P.S. Have you heard about our special? We’re offering free private transaction paperwork during the months of March and April!

Buggy Tunes

It was one of those old horns. One that sang several different tunes and sounded more like something you’d hear coming from an ice cream truck than from a buggy. In the immature state that I was, I decided it would be a good idea to put the horn on my buggy.

The fifteen-mile ride to my girlfriend’s place was one of the shortest to date. With the horn under my seat and the remote in my hand, I had my fun. Plenty of folks were out and about. Children and adults alike craned their heads and stared in disbelief. Peering out the side window, I felt secure from being identified.

After I arrived at my girlfriend’s place, her three younger siblings came barreling out to see this bizarre rig. My girlfriend’s look said it all: partially amazed, partially shocked, but mostly embarrassed. I was grinning like an opossum as I unhitched the horse.

Later in the evening it was time for more fun. The younger siblings were still amazed at the buggy that sang tunes. Having the remote in my pocket, I told them to go out to the buggy and lift the shafts. Standing inside the window, I watched as they lifted them. I pressed the remote every time they did so. They were in awe. These Putch-town buggies were advanced!

The impression I left on my girlfriend must have been a good one; we ended up tying the knot. Time went on, and the horn went on the shelf–but not for long.

Sharon and Tina, co-workers of mine, asked me for permission to use my horse and buggy one evening for youth night. I had bought my horse from them a few months prior and they saw this as a good opportunity to use her again. Their cousin Linda lived across the road from us and the three of them would be going together with my rig.

I still recognized a good opportunity when I saw one, so I got to work.

I pulled the ‘ole beauty of a horn off the shelf, removing the dust to see if it still performed. After replacing a few parts and connecting it to the buggy battery, it sounded just like the “good old days”.

In order to execute my plan, I would need the help of Marlin, a cousin to Sharon and Tina and brother to Linda. I would give him the remote and he would trail the girls’ buggy from a distance, playing its funky tunes every so often.

It was almost more than we could handle. Our menacing smiles said it all.

Friday evening arrived and so did Sharon and Tina. They drove out the lane, unaware of the pending drama. They drove across the road to pick up Linda, and the horn promptly sounded.

I watched with a big smirk. Evidently Marlin couldn’t resist beginning the fun a bit early. All I heard was my name being shouted in some shrill female tones.

After the voices died down and everyone had boarded the buggy, they left. With a snicker, Marlin climbed onto his bike and followed.

The buggy sang tunes as far as I could watch. The girls were horrified.

Marlin, meanwhile, was having the time of his life. How could it get any better?

Needless to say, the girls made a rather grand entrance at the youth volleyball event.

* * *

I hadn’t considered the fact that this buggy would return deep in the night with some disgruntled women on it–but hindsight says I should have.

My wife elbowed me around midnight, asking what the racket was. I had been sound asleep. Again, she elbowed me, saying, “It’s the horn. They brought the buggy back and now they are playing the horn.”

I couldn’t believe it.

I jumped out of bed and quickly dressed. I soon realized the horn wasn’t on the buggy anymore. I opened the back door to try and address the matter. But what was there to do? The culprits were hiding and the horn was outside our window, blaring on high. Never mind that our one and two-year-old daughters were sleeping directly inside the window.

I grabbed a wrench and a flashlight and faster than a cat in water, I removed some wires, dismantling the horn.

I retreated toward the back door. Just as I reached it, I heard laughter. It was almost more than I could handle.

They emerged from behind the tractor. All four of them: Sharon, Tina, Linda, and Marlin.

At half past twelve, I found no humor in the situation.

“Ya-ya Marion!” they hollered. “What goes around comes around!”

They were right, but who said it had to come back around at midnight?
