Amish Enjoy Time Building Relationships on Trips the

Doby Jones is an illiterate 70-something with a happy and enthusiastic disposition. I am assigned to the crew working on his place. About eight of us Amish youth clamber out of the van and begin unloading tools on this Monday morning in late December.

Soon there are four or five boys and girls tearing shingles off the roof. A few ladies begin cleaning the inside of the house. Levi and I go inspect the site of the smoke house we plan to construct behind the house.

On Saturday last, three loads of Amish youth arrived here in Mississippi and lodged at the Mashulaville Dormitory, Owner Larry Miller has lined up a dozen or so work projects for us to help poverty-stricken local residents. This morning we’ve split up and tackled the first four.

Levi Zook, my good friend and a contractor from Pennsylvania, is in charge of this job site. He inspects the existing wooden platform that we’re supposed to build the smoke house on. It’s way out of square,” he declares.

So we fix it. This involves pulling nails out of tough native lumber. I have a good Stanley hammer and expensive cat’s claw nail puller, but on some of these nails, it still feels like I’m trying to yank them out with my fingernails. At long last, we get them out and get the floor (more or less) squared to Levi’s satisfaction. Then we can begin building walls.

As the morning progresses, we see Clara, Geneva and company repeatedly coming out of the back door with arm loads of trash. They burn it. Later they tell us they cleaned a tremendous amount out of just one closet. With all the hands on the roof, the old shingles and tar paper are soon cleaned off and only the sheathing remains.

Doby has provided burgers and hot dogs for lunch along with sweet potatoes cooked in the skin, which are remarkably tasty. The ladies prepare the food and we break for lunch. It has been drizzly all day and Levi wants to get the tar paper on the roof (the better to waterproof it, my dear) before we leave this afternoon. He changes the sheathing in some weak spots and Jerre, Ivan and I plaster the black tar paper on.

On our way back to the dorm, driver Rich stops in at one of the job sites. Here friend Eli is heading up a crew

working on changing a steep roof. This house retains hints of former beauty and elegance but it is in a sad, bedraggled state at the moment. Eli and company aim to improve that. Levi stays to help get it “in the dry.” The rest of us go back to the dormitory to take showers in preparation for our jaunt to the Choctaw Reservation tonight.

Yesterday, we Amish attended worship services with a black congregation. Today we get to play volleyball with American Indians.

Our three van loads arrive at this 70-acre reservation and take bleacher seats on one side of the gymnasium.

We are obliged to wait awhile as the residents finish playing their set schedule. We are champing at the bit to participate. Sadie Ruth and Gina chat with a young Choctaw girl named Lacey. She lets us taste a stick of a substance she calls something like “wood.” It is a fibrous, white material that looks a lot like, well, wood, but it is soft enough at one end to bite off and eat. It is sweet. Lacey says they grow it at home.

Finally, we’re allowed to play. My Amish team is spanked soundly by a collection of Choctaw. A few of our other teams fare better.

The evening caps off with a unique sight. A team of six Choctaw ladies play against another team of five Amish girls and one Choctaw woman. How many times has that happened in history? The Amish/Choctaw team wins both games.

We thank the Choctaws for letting us play and drive back through the rain to the dormitory.

Do I Believe?

If we observe someone for a while, we can perceive what is important to him—what he really believes. After all, isn’t all behavior fueled by what we believe, not by what we know?

Imagine this: You are helping your neighbor fix his bull pen. You both know his bull is totally “safe,” yet as a precaution you locked him up in the barn. Just as you’re screwing the last board to the post you hear a loud “MOOO!” You take one look—the bull! Somehow he has escaped from the barn and now he’s lumbering toward you.

It is not that he looks angry. Besides, you know he is safe; he has never charged anyone, and your neighbor says his preschool boys often pet him. The difference between what you know and what you actually believe will cause you to vault that fence— fast.

Or take, for example, the fact that all of us know God will provide for our needs, physically and spiritually. Haven’t we all been taught since childhood that God knows everything about us and that He even numbers the very hair on our head? Haven’t we all been told that God knows what is best for each of us, and that is what He will send?

Think back to when you were a child. Did your parents give you everything you asked for? Did you always get as much candy as you wanted? What about all those toys that caught your eye in the store? Or that new bike you wanted?

Of course you did not get everything you wanted. Does this mean your parents did not love you? No, it was because your parents knew what was best for you that they chose not to always give you what you asked for.

Does God always give us what we pray for?

What does this tell us about God? It tells us God knows everything about everyone. He knows what is best for us. He chooses to give us what we need even if it may seem to hurt us at the moment. Because God loves us and wants what is best for us, that is what He will send.

Do we really believe this?

Then how do we respond if a situation is out of our control? Do we relax and remember it was never

within our control anyway? Are we at peace with knowing that since God is in control, we don’t need to be? We know that as high as the heavens are above the earth, so God’s ways are higher than our ways and His thoughts higher than our thoughts.

But do we—do I—truly believe it?

If we do, we will not seethe or worry when things do not go our way. We will strive not to complain about our lot in life. Instead of questioning God, “Why did this have to happen to me?” we will ask, “God, what do You want me to learn from this situation?” If we actually believe God knows what is best for us we will not be afraid to give Him our all—to obey Him implicitly without needing to understand why.

Fear. Negativity. Where do they come from? Don’t they usually flow from wells of unbelief deep down inside? From knowing, perhaps, but not believing? Is it possible for a person who constantly seeps negativity and fearfulness to trust that God will take care of him?

Really, why are we afraid of where God will lead us once we totally surrender to Him? Isn’t it just that selfish “I want to be in control” attitude? How could God—Who created us, loved us while we were lost, and drew us back to Him—have anything less than the best in mind for us? How could He, when He sent the only Son He ever had to teach us how to live, then suffered Him to die a shameful, bloody death so we can truly live?

Just knowing is not enough. We must believe. Because how we believe, so will we act.

U LANE VARIETY

“I got full dentures in my 30s, and over time they became a problem. At first, they fit well, but eventually, I had to eat softer foods and faced embarrassing moments. Dental Implants changed everything. Now I feel normal again, able to speak confidently and enjoy meals like everyone else, without resorting to soft foods and soup.”

Is It Time to Switch from Dentures to Dental Implants?

Are you tired of the limitations and hassles that come with dentures? Maybe they’re not fitting as well as they once did, or they’ve started to show signs of wear and tear. If you’ve been considering making the switch to dental implants, you’re not alone. Many people are exploring the advantages of dental implants and wondering when the time is right to leave dentures behind.

So, how do you know when it’s time to trade your dentures for dental implants? Some key factors to consider: the age of your dentures, comfort, damage to the dentures, concerns about facial appearance and jawbone health, and overall convenience. Let’s break down each of these factors to help you decide if dental implants are the right fit for you.

Age of Your Dentures

Dentures don’t last forever. Over time, they can become worn, loose, and uncomfortable. If your dentures are more than five years old, it might be time to explore a more permanent solution. At Michiana Dental Implants, we offer dental implants that don’t just replace missing teeth—they provide a long-term solution that can last a lifetime with proper care. If you’re tired of frequent replacements and adjustments, dental implants could be the cost-effective and reliable alternative you’ve been searching for.

Comfort

Are your dentures causing discomfort or slipping at inconvenient moments? Unlike traditional dentures, dental implants are securely anchored to your jawbone, offering a stable, comfortable fit. This eliminates the pain and irritation caused by loose dentures rubbing against your gums. At Michiana Dental Implants, our patients often tell us how life-changing it is to no longer worry about sore spots or awkward slips.

Damage to Your Dentures

Chipped, cracked, or broken dentures can be frustrating to deal with—not to mention costly to repair or replace. Dental implants provide a durable, low-maintenance solution that eliminates the ongoing hassle of damaged dentures. With implants, you can enjoy a beautiful, natural-looking smile that’s built to last.

“I was determined to find an alternative to dentures. I was living a life of frustration with my dentures. Hybridge Dental Implants changed everything - I can’t imagine life where I’d be without them.”

Concerns About Facial Appearance and Jawbone Health

Did you know that tooth loss can lead to jawbone shrinkage and a sunken facial appearance? Dentures can’t stop this process, but dental implants can. Implants stimulate the jawbone, helping to maintain its strength and structure while restoring your facial contours. At Michiana Dental Implants, we’ve seen firsthand how this transformative solution can help patients look and feel younger, boosting their confidence and overall quality of life.

Convenience

Let’s face it: dentures can be inconvenient. From daily removal for cleaning to worrying about them shifting while eating or speaking, dentures require ongoing maintenance. Dental implants, on the other hand, are a permanent, hassle-free solution. With implants, you can eat, speak, and smile with complete confidence—no adhesives or special cleaning routines required.

If you’re ready to leave the inconvenience of dentures behind, Michiana Dental Implants is here to help. Dental implants offer a secure, natural-looking, and lasting solution that can truly transform your smile and your life. Let us help you discover the confidence and freedom that comes with a permanent smile solution.

Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it. ~ Henry David Thoreau

Three Years of Nothing?

“Did you see that farmer Chang? His fields are bare, but he keeps going out and watering and weeding them!”

“I know. He must be crazy. You know, some men are just like that…they keep hoping and trying, even when they should give up and do something else!”

The two mocking men were leaning against large poplar trees at the edge of Farmer Chang’s farm, watching him walk tenderly and water the ground.

Farmer Chang glanced up as he made his rounds and realized these men were making fun of his business. His face flushed. He hardly knew why he did it himself! “When I get home I will ask my father why we grow bamboo,” he determined.

As dusk settled and Chang finished caring for his crops, he began the short trek home. He remembered the thing he was going to ask his father, and his steps hurried. “Every day I’m out there someone passing by mocks me!”

The wooden chopsticks made dull scraping sounds against the pottery as Chang and his family ate their evening meal.

“Baba*, why do we grow bamboo? It takes so long, and everyone mocks us!” Tears of frustration built up in Chang’s eyes.

“Why, Chang, don’t you remember that bamboo takes at least four years to grow? It’s doing things underneath, where we can’t see it, but soon it will grow so fast many people will stand in wonder!” Baba smiled in satisfaction as he considered it.

“Chang, we must remember what is coming, not how it feels right now! It’s like hope. When the bamboo sprouts, it will grow almost three feet per day, and we will be so happy.” Chang’s sister clapped her hands with glee. She had her turns to help in the bamboo fields, too, but she usually had a more hopeful perspective.

Chang smiled at her. Of course he knew why they grew bamboo! It made a good profit and it was successful.

He continued to ponder over their bamboo fields. “Why, Baba, growing bamboo can be such a wonderful spiritual story, too! The fields are like our hearts, and the Farmer is God. He works on us with care and much time, and eventually, we will sprout up in our new life for Him! He grants us so much mercy, and He is so patient with us!” Chang marveled at the love of his “Farmer” as he considered it through the parable of bamboo.

“I am glad we grow bamboo!” Chang exclaimed, and everyone smiled their agreement.

Often the things in life that take the most time are the best experiences we ever have.

*Baba is a Chinese name for Father.

A REFLECTION ON 2024

As we look back on the past year, one word stands out: gratitude . We had the privilege of working with so many of you — whether through auctions for your properties and businesses, helping you purchase a new home, or answering your thoughtful questions. Thank you for trusting us with these important moments in your lives. That trust is something we’ll never take lightly.

Our new Article & Question series in this magazine has been a standout highlight for us. It’s a happy encounter for our team to open the mailbox and find your mailed submissions, and it’s been fascinating to see common threads emerge from people living counties apart. So many of you are wondering about similar challenges and opportunities, which reminds us how connected we all are as a community. We’re honored to keep these conversations going.

Auctions continued to be at the heart of our business, and we’ve worked hard to bring value to our clients through every event. From estate sales to business ownerships to farms, we’ve seen firsthand how auctions create opportunities for Michiana. There are many steps in the timeline of an auction where we realize the role we play in the stories of bidders and sellers, and that’s exactly why we are committed to this service and excited to grow it further.

Our team has grown both in number and caliber. Whether it’s the new agents who brought fresh energy and perspectives or the veterans who continue to set the bar high, we’re proud of the culture we’ve built together. It’s one that values collaboration, creativity, and a shared commitment to serve with excellence. The heart of RES isn’t just in what we do, but in how we do it: as a team.

As we look to the year ahead, we’re ready to grow alongside Michiana’s needs. We’re exploring ways to expand and fine-tune our services, and we’re excited about what’s ahead. It isn’t about reinventing the wheel; it’s about doing more of what works — listening to you, finding solutions, and making it easier to navigate the milestones that matter.

Michiana is why we’re here, and we’re grateful to be in business for you and because of you.

Here’s to 2025!

Now that the Presidential Inauguration has taken place, you may be wondering how it could affect your ability to buy or refinance a home. The good news is, history shows that the inauguration itself rarely leads to any major, immediate changes in the real estate market.

Here’s what we know...

• Historical Data: The Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (better known as Freddie Mac) has tracked interest rate changes around election times since 1971. In the 13 elections since, the biggest rate shift was 0.58% in 1980 — likely driven more by the high inflation of the late ’70s and early ’80s than the election itself. (For perspective, mortgage rates in 1981 hit a staggering 16.63%.)

• Market Stability: While the political landscape may seem uncertain, mortgage rates tend to follow long-term economic trends rather than short-term political events. So, there’s no need to panic about sudden spikes or dips.

• Long-Term Outlook: Instead of focusing on short-term political shifts, it’s more useful to consider broader economic indicators. Mortgage rates are shaped by factors like inflation and the Federal Reserve’s policies, which tend to evolve steadily over time.

What Does This Mean for You?

While the election may introduce some uncertainty, it’s essential to focus on your personal financial situation and long-term goals. If you’re considering buying or refinancing a home, talking to a knowledgeable mortgage professional can help you navigate today’s market with advice tailored to you.

Our team at Bright Star RES offers local insight and years of experience to help you navigate these uncertain times with confidence. Remember, the market is always moving, but that doesn’t mean it’s moving in the wrong direction for you.

We can certainly empathize. It is an unfortunate situation to not be on good terms with neighbors (particularly immediate neighbors).

The only case in which we could say for sure that a property’s resale value would be negatively affected by a neighbor is when there are visible, physical issues. This could mean your neighbor does not maintain their home or land, or worse yet, they cross over your yard line and disrupt your property’s value directly. In most cases, resale value usually isn’t affected very much, but the property could take a bit longer to sell.

If we were to offer advice on how to remedy the situation, we’d say that a little can go a long way. Maintaining a friendly demeanor towards them at the mailbox or when you pass by them might not change their attitude, but it certainly can hold any tension at bay while you figure out your move and what’s best for your family. In an extreme case, you might seek out the help of a mutual acquaintance to help bring you together and strengthen the relationship.

Thanks for writing in to us at Bright Star RES; your $100 gift card is on its way to you!
