Our capital, Charlotte Amalie, is the most visited port in the Caribbean and boasts one of the most picturesque harbors in the world. Fill your days with a trip to a beautiful beach, swim with the sea lions, ride the Caribbean’s only tramway or shop for one of our handmade souvenirs.

The rich heritage and culture of St. Croix comes alive in our architecture, cuisine and traditions. I encourage you to stroll through the charming towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted, travel back in time with a visit to Estate Whim Museum or enjoy our culinary delights through a Food Tour. A sailing trip to Buck Island National Monument, one of only two underwater monuments in the United States, is an exceptional day trip. Diving enthusiasts can experience five different dives in one day.

Just within the Charlotte Amalie harbor you’ll find Water Island, the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Relax at romantic Honeymoon Beach, tour the island in a golf cart and get to know a few of the 200 residents that call this island gem home.

Peace and tranquility are plentiful on St. John. Two-thirds of the island is a national park with one pristine beach after another. Twenty plus hiking trails let you explore our history, wildlife and the natural beauty that makes this island spectacular. Be sure not to miss the pre-Columbian

Despite the devastating effects of such natural disasters, Virgin Islands residents were determined to once again open our doors to visitors. In the immediate aftermath of the storms, several of our accommodations and businesses were forced to close their doors. Both the public and private sectors faced difficult decisions about how to proceed with recovery. Fortunately, Virgin Islanders are a resilient group, and we rallied together to rebuild our home, clean up our beaches and reopen our businesses. The tropical isle of St. Croix was discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus. For all its natural beauty, he named the island “Santa Cruz” meaning Holy Cross. GISELE MORALES

Andrea Milam has lived in the Caribbean since 2005. Enamored with the region’s culture and natural beauty, she moved to St. John after graduating from college. There, she got married, built a home and a family, and established her writing career. Experiencing the way her island community came together following a direct and devastating hit by Hurricane Irma only further fueled her love for St. John and the Caribbean as a whole.

Gisele Morales currently calls the beautiful island of St. Croix home. Although she’s also had the opportunity to call Los Angeles, Miami and Palm Beach home, St. Croix has stolen her heart. As the owner of Gisele Morales Photography, she specializes in wedding, lifestyle and branding photography. When she’s not photographing or traveling, you can find her whipping up a new recipe at home with her husband and fur babies.

CAROL BAREUTHER Carol M. Bareuther, R.D., visited St. Thomas by cruise ship in 1986, returned two months later from her native New Jersey to work as the hospital’s nutritionist and never left. One husband, two children and a three-decade tandem-writing career later, Bareuther still loves life in the USVI. She’s authored Virgin Islands Cooking and Sports Fishing in the Virgin Islands and has written for Cooking Light, Vegetarian Times, Cruising World, Marlin and SAIL. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, swimming, hiking and reading.

STEVE AND JANET SIMONSEN ANQUANETTE GASPARD Born and raised in St. Croix, Anquanette Gaspard is a freelance writer and blogger with extensive experience in food, travel, marketing and research. Her website, www.cruzanfoodie.com, focuses on the food culture in the USVI, the Caribbean and beyond. The blog encourages readers to experience different foods and cultures and explore locations outside of their comfort zones, allowing them to fully understand how food and travel connect people from all walks of life. Her work has been featured in publications such as EBONY and Destination Marriott and www.onshegoes.com.

Steve and Janet Simonsen met on St. Thomas in 1987, got married at Secret Harbor in 1989 and moved to St. John in 1991. Since then, Steve’s photography has taken them around the world but has always been rooted in the islands they call home. He’s contributed to the V.I. Department of Tourism’s branding for two decades, and his work has appeared in Islands, Scuba Diving, Outside, National Geographic Adventure and Caribbean Travel and Life. They also have supplied footage to Kenny Chesney for music videos, concert tours and documentaries.

L’ESPERANCE TRAIL: Descending 1,000 feet over two and a half miles, this trail takes hikers past two sets of plantation ruins. GO TO THE GLYPHS: Descend the island’s popular Reef Bay trail to see the beguiling petroglyphs, likely carved into rocks by the Taínos who inhabited St. John around 1,000 years ago. SPICE IT UP: If you’re lucky enough to be on St. John during a dry period, make Salt Pond one of your first stops. The salt pond for which this beautiful beach is named lies just behind the sandy shoreline, and when it’s dry enough, the pond’s water evaporates, leaving countless pounds of salt at its edges. LEARN SOMETHING NEW: Every year from January through April, the Friends of the VINP hosts a series of seminars that introduce visitors to some of the island’s most special resources — its knowledgeable residents. Learn about piracy with the VINP’s archaeologist, discover medicinal uses for island plants or sample rums from across the Caribbean. Sign up early, as these popular seminars fill up fast. www.friendsvinp.org GET TRASHED: If you find yourself enamored by the island’s pristine beauty and you want to help keep it that way, join the volunteer group Get Trashed for their next cleanup. THE STUNNING SEA THAT SURROUNDS ST. JOHN IS AN OBVIOUS DRAW FOR VISITORS, but there’s just as much to do and see on land. Whether you want to get your heart rate up with a competitive tennis match or bring it down a notch with some tranquil beachfront yoga, check out these active outdoor pursuits, island-style. HIKING: Numerous trails crisscross the island. Some lead to sweeping views, others lead to beaches, and many take hikers past historic Danish plantation ruins. Opt for an easy stroll at the accessible Francis Bay trail or challenge yourself with something more strenuous like the Caneel Hill trail, where a viewing platform offers incredible 360-degree island and ocean views. Exploring by foot is one of the best ways to experience St. John’s beauty. HORSEBACK RIDING: There’s something so peaceful about meandering slowly over island trails by horseback. IT’S NO SECRET THAT ONE OF THE BEST THINGS ABOUT ST. JOHN IS THE WATERS surrounding the island. Whether you want to paddle through the silky blue sea under your own power or you prefer to motor through at top speed, the island offers countless ways for you to experience and interact with all the ocean has to offer. KAYAKING AND SUP: There’s something so satisfying about paddling through the sea, taking in the coral, turtles, and fish from above. If you’re a do-it-yourself kind of person, try out a paddle board rental. Standup paddleboarding (SUP) is a relatively easy, peaceful activity that doesn’t require a lot of strength or skill. Just remember to stand in the middle of the board, plant your feet about shoulder width apart, keep your knees slightly bent and paddle! You may fall off once or twice while you get the hang of it, and that’s okay. It happens to the best of us. Arawak Expeditions, conveniently located in Mongoose Junction, will help you load your board onto the soft rack they provide for the top of your rental car, and you’ll get

Try out Arawak’s half-day trip, which takes you to Honeymoon Beach and Henley Cay, or their full-day trip, which includes a picnic lunch and several routes to choose from. Virgin Islands Ecotours combines their kayak tours with snorkel and hiking stops,

with destinations including the waters off Caneel Bay Resort and Henley Cay. For a truly unforgettable excursion, check out Arawak’s multi-day kayak and camping trip. Kayaking between the U.S. and British Virgin Islands and camping on the beach under the stars as part of this five-day trip is a once-ina-lifetime experience.

SNORKELING AND DIVING: If you’re more interested in what’s going on below the surface, try your hand at snorkeling or scuba diving. St. John is one of those islands where visitors are lucky enough to be able to snorkel right from the shore, transitioning from pristine white sands to the tranquil underwater world with ease. If it’s turtles you seek, head to Maho Bay, where the turtle

population continues to thrive in the wake of Hurricane Irma. Salt Pond Bay, on the island’s south shore, is known to be home to a spotted eagle ray who makes appearances from time to time, and you’re sure to see an octopus or two when you snorkel the underwater trail at Trunk Bay. If you’re really lucky, you might get a visit from the wild dolphins that are known to frequent the waters around St. John. Both Arawak and Virgin Islands Ecotours offer rentals of highquality snorkel equipment. And if you’re in the mood to plunge in even deeper, try a scuba diving excursion with Cruz Bay Watersports. On a good day, visibility goes up to 100 feet, and life on the sea floor is nearly as lush as the island’s hills. FISHING: As you might imagine, the Virgin Islands offers a thrilling fishing experience. Treat yourself to a fishing charter and your captain will likely steer you directly to the North Drop, about 20 miles north of St. Thomas, or the South Drop, about eight miles south of the island. In these steep underwater drop-offs, migrating schools of fish congregate, attracting predators like tuna, wahoo and billfish. Game fish like marlin will give you the fight of your life, so bring your stamina and determination. Fishing from shore is a rarity here, and with much of the island protected by the Virgin Islands National Park, you’ll want to read up on the park’s regulations before attempting to do so. HIS UNERRING EYE HAS ALLOWED HIM TO CAPTURE THE VIBRANCY OF ST. JOHN BOTH ON LAND AND DEEP UNDER ITS WARM WATERS. By Andrea Milam Since he arrived on St. John in 1991, Steve Simonsen has spent nearly as much time below the surface as he has on land. His appreciation and gratitude for the sea is evident in his magical underwater photos, which have graced countless magazine covers. Steve’s images of the island’s abovethe-surface beauty are just as alluring, and his stunning coffee table book, Living Art, remains popular among Love City fans more than a decade after it was first published. Though Steve is the longeststanding professional photographer on island, he’s not ready to slow down just yet. In fact, he continues to evolve while chasing his ultimate dream of becoming an accomplished cinematographer — even after Hurricane Irma, a particularly harrowing experience for Steve. He was caught outside during the height of the storm, wearing his son’s football helmet to protect his head as the home he and his wife, Janet, had bought in 1991 and paid off in full six months prior, blew apart and was completely destroyed. Despite what he went through that terrifying day, Steve and Janet remain ever committed to their island home, and they’re working to rebuild.

“Simply put, we love our history here and we love our friends and community,” Steve says. “We can’t imagine living anywhere more wonderful, even after the hurricanes. The natural beauty of the island and people are still hard to beat.” How did you decide on photography as a career? When I was at school in Boulder, I got into diving and began underwater photography there. I had plenty of people tell me that they were working 40-hour weeks, so they could go on vacation and dive. They said, “If this is what you love to do, you should make it a career.” You don’t have to hear that many times before realizing it’s true, and it was the right move for me. I began my career in earnest doing underwater photography in Cozumel, and I was just blown away by the crazy color patterns of things like the sponges and the fish. I thought, “The only way to share this is to take pictures and show people.” I’m also fascinated by the water itself. It’s in constant motion, wobbling, wiggling and creating weird reflections. I’ve spent a large part of my underwater career specializing in pictures that show the

underside of the surface of the water and reflect objects like coral or turtles. What is your greatest accomplishment? Self-publishing my coffee table book, Living Art. I went to big publishers with the idea and they all said the same thing: “St. John is too small of a topic for a book to be successful, so we’d be interested if you did all three islands.” But that wasn’t the idea. I live on St. John, and I know that the kind of people who really love St. John have a special feeling about it. That’s the audience I was creating the book for. The Friends of the Park ended up funding the first print run, and as a result, they shared in the profits, which brought in a substantial amount of money for them. That felt good. What is a hidden gem on St. John that visitors should check out? Many people don’t know this, but there’s a Spanish anchor in plain sight underwater at Denis Bay. Right off the dock you can see something black sticking out of the sand in the perfect shape of a spade. It’s just the top of a 2,000-pound, 200- to 300-year-old anchor covered with sun anemones.

Many of their designs give a nod to the island — like petroglyph-themed earrings, rings and bracelets — as well as their take on the well-known hook bracelet, whose hook is shaped like a “J” for St. John. Bamboo Studio’s charms and pendants display the outline of St. John or feature a compass rose with the island’s latitude and longitude coordinates. You can also customize your own charm or bracelet with a loved one’s name or initials. There’s even a dedicated hurricane collection, featuring an iconic hurricane-themed swirl incorporated into pendants, earrings and bracelets, showcasing the island’s strength and resilience following Irma. Also in Wharfside Village is Freebird Creations, an island institution that’s sold an eclectic collection of jewelry and duty-free watches for nearly three decades. The store features the popular petroglyph

design in earrings, rings and pendants, as well as money clips, belt buckles, brooches, cufflinks and key rings. Other themed collections include Larimar, pearl, sea life and mermaid, pirates and certified ancient and shipwreck coins, sure to serve as conversation starters. Country music singer Kenny Chesney’s love of St. John is no secret, and when Hurricane Irma devastated the island, he was among the first to step up to help. From sending in supplies like generators, rakes, shovels and other tools needed for the initial cleanup to food, water, medicine and other necessities, Kenny’s efforts started as soon as the skies cleared. The Love for Love City foundation was formed “from the heart of Kenny Chesney’s No Shoes Nation,” the organization says, and that group helped evacuate more than 1,000 people from St. John. As the island’s recovery progressed, it was announced in June that Kenny would continue to help the island by donating all the proceeds from his new album, Songs for the Saints, to the Love for Love City fund. He also personally delivered new instruments to the St. John School of the Arts, where he visited with faculty and students. PICNIC AT THE BEACH: There are no food options at St. John beaches, so if you’re planning to stay awhile, you’ll want to bring your own. Grabbing a sandwich from one of Cruz Bay’s delis or picking up a plate of food at an island grocery store, where you’ll find surprisingly delicious fried chicken and other picnic foods like pasta salad and coleslaw, is a convenient way to ensure you and your crew stay sated during your time at the beach. DINING DRESS CODE Whether you’re eating at the most upscale restaurant or enjoying happy hour at the beach, the dress code on St. John is decidedly casual. Even at the most high-end establishments, men are welcomed in shorts and a short-sleeve collared shirt, and women can wear sundresses. Leave the high heels, hair products and makeup at home. Flip-flops are acceptable footwear in all dining venues. Do note, however, that shirt and shoes must be worn at all establishments and when you’re anywhere other than the beach. Local culture tends to be conservative, and it’s best to respect the locals and cover up when you leave the beach. This is a great mindset to experience the natural treasures in the U.S. Virgin Islands, known as America’s Caribbean Paradise. While the cool waters will clearly be calling you as soon as you arrive, be sure to go inland to experience the myriad fun spots found throughout the island. Fly through the air with the greatest of ease at Tree Limin’ Extreme. Six zip lines, two sky bridges and eight breathtaking aerial platforms that span acres of jungle add up to an amazing experience. Located on the island’s lush north side, views above the tropical canopy stretch from the neighboring offshore cays to the British Virgin Islands beyond. Tree Limin’ Extreme is also home to the Caribbean’s “Yo-Yo” zip, an exhilarating backward and forward zip. Play 18 holes when the Mahogany Run Golf Course reopens after hurricane-related repairs are complete. Developed in a picturesque valley and boasting gorgeous views of the Atlantic, the 6,000-yard, par-70 course was designed by globally renowned architects George and Tom Fazio. This Nordic country ruled the Virgin Islands for over 300 years until the United States purchased St. Thomas and its siblings of St. John and St. Croix in 1917. Today, the capital city of Charlotte Amalie, named for a 17th-century Danish queen, boasts remnants of Denmark that include street signs in Danish, red- and whitecolored roofs reminiscent of the Dannebrog and historic sites built by the Danes themselves and their contemporaries.

EMANCIPATION GARDEN: See the Freedom Statue, a bronze bust of a man blowing a conch shell that’s located on the western side of this tree-lined town square. The figure commemorates the 150th anniversary of then-governor Peter von Scholten’s emancipation proclamation on July 3, 1848. The white-painted wooden bandstand and numerous wooden benches are a great spot for resting up after a shopping jaunt along nearby Main Street. Location: Forte Strade

FREDERICK LUTHERAN CHURCH: Notable for its Neoclassical architecture and Gothic Revival trim, this 18th-century house of worship is one of the oldest Lutheran churches in the Western Hemisphere, dating back to 1666. Walk up the welcoming arms staircase to the entrance where you can see the stained-glass windows and the altar, which was crafted from local mahogany. Services take place each Sunday. GOVERNMENT HOUSE: This three-story “White House” was built in the 19th century, with a Neoclassical design that included intricate ironwork along its balconies. These days, it’s the working office of the Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Among its notable outside details are the red and white wooden Danish-style guardhouse and First Lady’s garden, located across the street. Location: Kongens Gade SYNAGOGUE: Sand floors are just one remarkable feature of this longest continuously used synagogue in the United States. Built in 1833 for a congregation that was founded in the late 18th century, the Greek Revival temple front opens through white pillars to a high-ceiling sanctuary that features a central Baccarat crystal candelabra and mahogany pews. Next door, the Weibel Museum presents a small but impressive array of plaques and artifacts that memorialize the congregation’s remarkable past. Location: Crystal Gade

Day at the Museum

LOCAL MUSEUMS TAKE YOU ON A TIMELY TOUR OF ST. THOMAS’ COLORFUL PAST. MUSEUMS ARE MAGNIFICENT PORTALS into the past. Step inside, and the astounding artifacts take you to a bygone time and tell a story about famous moments in history. The golden age of piracy is a theme at two St. Thomas museums, albeit in delightfully opposite ways. That is, Fort Christian is the stronghold that has protected Charlotte Amalie’s residents against pirates since its 17th-century founding, while the more recent Pirates Treasure Museum lets visitors in for a thrilling tour of these plunderers’ treasures, traditions and tales.

FORT CHRISTIAN MUSEUM. Take a guided tour or explore on your own. This red painted fort is a focal point in downtown Charlotte Amalie. It opened in the late 1600s and took nearly a decade to build. It’s easy to see why: The walls are three- to six-feet thick, it stands three stories high and its expansive diamond-shaped building and courtyard take up a little more than 1.5

acres. Through the centuries, the fort has served as a protector, a prison, the colonial governor’s residence and government offices, the first church and even as an early cemetery. Exhibits include a small period chapel, an old-fashioned Danish oven and antique furnishings that include a fourposter mahogany bed. The top floor is a must-see. Here, there are model cannons with an eagle-eye view of the harbor to the west, south and east. Location: Forte Strade. Hours: Mondays through Fridays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. exhibits include a working model of an undersea ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) used to explore the ocean floor and a wind chamber that imitates the effects of a Category 1 hurricane. Upstairs, there’s a two-minute virtual reality undersea tour, a replica of a brig and plenty of pirate paraphernalia. Best of all Captain John, a real-life look-alike of Captain Jack Sparrow from the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, is always ready to take pictures and tell tales. LINDQUIST BEACH Since this pristine beach is part of a

21-acre park, it has a wonderful Robinson Crusoe–like feel: Even the car lot isn’t visible from the wavy waterline. Aside from a restroom, lifeguard and benches, there are no other signs — or services — of civilization. Watch for sea turtles while swimming and snorkeling. Route 38. Entrance fee: $5 per person; free for children under age 12; $2 vehicle parking.

MAGENS BAY Named one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, this 68-acre waterfront park boasts calm waters, a welcoming arc of white sand and plenty of coconut palms for shade. It’s easy to spend the day. There are picnic tables, restrooms with saltwater showers, lifeguards, an open-air bar and restaurant, paddleboat and kayak rentals and even a boutique in case someone forgot their bathing suit. LOCATED OFF THE COAST FROM ST. THOMAS, HASSEL ISLAND OFFERS A FASCINATING DAY TRIP INTO THE ISLAND’S HISTORY.

Mother Nature’s volcanic handiwork created the U.S. Virgin Islands eons ago, but Hassel Island is a human invention. Up until the 1860s it was a peninsula of St. Thomas, but the Danish government — which was in charge of the island at the time — wanted to improve circulation in the Charlotte Amalie harbor. So, it dredged a channel at St. Thomas’ western end, thus creating 136acre Hassel Island. Even though it’s a relatively young island, Hassel was far from being virgin territory. Archaeological research by the Virgin Islands National Park Service, which purchased 95 percent of the island in 1978, shows that the ancient Arawak people once called Hassel home. Today, it’s still possible to see and visit remnants of the Napoleonic War era British-built fortifications Fort Willoughby and Garrison House on the island’s east side. To the west is the Creque Marine Railway, one of the oldest steam-operated marine railways, which was built as a base of operations by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company.

HOW TO ENJOY HASSEL WITH NO HASSLE The best way to experience Hassel Island is via a guided historic kayaking tour with Virgin Islands Ecotours (Tel: 877-959-2687 or 340-779-2155). SHE’S WORKING TO PRESERVE THE ISLAND’S PRISTINE SURROUNDINGS. By Carol M. Bareuther, R.D.

Valerie’s love for the sea probably started with her adventure-loving father, who actually sailed to St. Thomas from France and enjoyed sailing, fishing and diving. Of course, it also didn’t hurt that she’s lived on St. Thomas all of her life. As a lifelong resident, she developed a unique, firsthand understanding of how special St. Thomas’ environment is — and how important it is to preserve it. “What I like are puzzles, crazy ideas or the things that hurt other people’s heads as they say, and finding solutions,” says Valerie — who brings degrees in International Business and Tourism and Travel Services Management, as well as several years’ experience working as convention manager at island resorts — to tackling real-world brainteasers. A good example is when Valerie impressively orchestrated seven events, including five fireworks displays, on three islands, all on one night: New Year’s Eve 1999.

What I like are puzzles, crazy ideas ... and finding solutions. The new millennium presented Valerie with the opportunity to fulfill a childhood dream, that is, to serve as marketing director at the Coral World Ocean Park, an eco-park located on the east side of the island. This ended up as the first step on a path that would take her deep into the environmental arena. In 2001, Valerie coordinated an exhibition for the United States’ Coral Reef Task Force at an island hotel. There, she met professionals affiliated with the Blue Flag program, one of the world’s most recognized voluntary eco-labels awarded to beaches and marinas. Valerie would then go on to launch Blue Flag USVI in 2010. Soon after, she went even further with her

environmental endeavors by volunteering with the Virgin Islands Conservation Society (VICS). Most recently, and despite two Category 5 hurricanes in 2017 which left her homeless, Valerie has successfully launched two major environmental programs in the Virgin Islands. One is Eco Schools, a national program that puts an understanding of the outside world inside the classroom via educational curricula. The second is the VI Clean Coasts Campaign, an initiative aimed to help local businesses reduce the use of single-use plastics. “Launching these programs have been some of my proudest accomplishments. It’s given me an opportunity to get off my soapbox and move beyond being a token tree hugger. After all, I firmly believe that education is the way to sustain our islands,” says Valerie. Her story sounds similar to a Hollywood movie screenplay. A young girl escapes the confines of a strict upbringing in a small New Jersey town for life in the big city of New York. Then she flies off to vacation on a tropical island paradise, settles down and lives happily ever after. This is the true story of how Judi Nagelberg, owner of Island Meetings & Incentives, made St. Thomas her home. Over the past half-century, Judi has welcomed scores of visitors, ranging from everyday folks to famous politicians, poets and public officials. What’s more, hers is a story of a self-described people person and risk taker who believes in the power of being happy even in the face of catastrophe — and continues to successfully survive and thrive both personally and professionally.

She took the job and almost immediately was given a $1 million budget — plus the assistance of a coworker and board — to host the annual Governor’s Conference that would coincide with the

Never one to look at the glass as being half-empty, Judi has since been resourceful, imaginative and reinventive. This has meant working with smaller groups of visitors, managing informal events and using her organizational skills to support nonprofits in helping the community. However, one thing that has remained constant for Judi: her regular weekly swim at Magens Bay.

However, Main Street, the shopping capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is lined with snazzy shops and name-brand boutiques selling gold as well as silver, platinum and precious gems like diamonds, sapphires and rubies all crafted into spectacular pieces of jewelry. That’s not all. Main Street, along with several other locales on the island, collectively add up to St. Thomas as a shopper’s paradise. There’s everything from incredible “something specials” to one-of-a-kind handicrafts, simple yet significant souvenirs for family and friends and must-haves like

beachwear. What’s more, the duty-free allowance in the U.S. Virgin Islands is twice that of other Caribbean islands. Plan to spend a full morning or afternoon cruising the shops on Main Street for some Caribbean-style retail therapy. The buildings here were once warehouses for

Plus, Emancipation Gardens, at the head of Main Street, and Roosevelt Park one block east, are two places with shade-covered benches that are ideal for a scenic break. Several other hot spots to shop span the island. The Crown Bay Center, located a mile and a half west of Charlotte Amalie, boasts over a dozen stores and kiosks that open whenever a cruise ship is in port. The Havensight Mall, a five-building complex filled with shops, restaurants, a pharmacy, bank and post office, sits at the West Indian Company cruise ship dock, a little over a mile east of town. Right next door is the Port of Sale Mall and the Shops at Yacht Haven Grande. Red Hook, at the island’s far eastern end, offers clothing, jewelry and souvenir stores along with a supermarket, pharmacy and bank. A great place for necessities is the Tutu Park Shopping Mall, where a major supermarket and department store bookend several smaller shops that make up the island’s only enclosed mall. U.S. residents, including children, can take home up to $1,600 each from a shopping spree in the U.S. Virgin Islands without having to pay taxes or duties. It’s also possible to send gifts (except for alcohol and tobacco) to family and friends back home, as long as their value is no higher than $100 each day. Great prices on liquor are matched by an equally good deal that lets you bring back six liters rather than five if one of the products is made in the Virgin Islands, such as Cruzan rum.

VW Club of St. Croix

THIS LOCAL CLUB IS KEEPING TRADITIONS ALIVE WITH THESE UNIQUE ISLAND VEHICLES. By Anquanette Gaspard

The St. Croix Twin City VW Club is changing the way people view automobile clubs. Usually when these clubs get together, they’re cruising around the town in large groups, working on the cars’ interior and exterior or just plain hanging out. However, club president Tyrone Luke and the 25 members are doing more than cruising around St. Croix in their vintage Volkswagen buggies. They’re giving back to the local community in more ways than one and are committed to making an impact on the lives of children and families on the island. How did the club get its start? Growing up, my dad and brothers all had Volkswagen vehicles. It was all I really knew and saw the most of as a kid, so in 1995, I got my first Volkswagen bug. My love for these cars is what made me start the St. Croix Twin City VW Club in 2011. The purpose and overall mission for the club is to help showcase the cars around the island at various charity events, fundraisers and community events. How has the club evolved into what it is today? What originally started as a club has become more of a family over time. Throughout the years, we’ve become well known throughout the community because of our unwavering support to charities and nonprofit organizations on the island. We sponsor and lend our support at the family fun day hosted by the Department of Agriculture at the Agriculture Fair Grounds. We promote the event around the island by encouraging others to come out and bring their families

for a free fun day that’s filled with activities. We’ve also been huge supporters of the St. Croix Educational Complex Vocational School’s auto mechanic class. They have a car show and shine event in conjunction with Napa Auto Parts where we go out in droves with our vehicles and educate them on Volkswagen buggies. They’re unlike most cars out there, and because they’re typically older, they operate and are cared for differently. We get to share our knowledge with these students. What would you say has been the biggest accomplishment since the club started? Our biggest accomplishment has been supporting our charities, which is our local chapter of Toys for Tots and the St. Croix Boys and Girls Club. Each year, these two charities join forces to organize a live and silent auction on the first Thursday of December to raise money for underprivileged kids on St. Croix. The club does a presentation at the auction called Bike a Bug, where each VW bug in the club donates a bike to the organizations. At a separate event the following week, we do a ride out to the Boys and Girls Club facility in Frederiksted with Santa Claus and the fire trucks. There, we put the names of all the children into a hat and gift the bikes to the names that are drawn. We’ve been doing this for the last four years, and it’s such a rewarding experience for us as well as the children. What is the makeup of the club members? Some of our members are born and raised in St. Croix. Others are from the neighboring

Caribbean islands such as Dominica, Antigua, St. Kitts, Puerto Rico and St. Lucia. We have a diverse culture of members who all have a love for Volkswagen buggies. What upcoming events or initiatives is the club working on? We have an annual anniversary drive out and beach picnic that happens every April. We make it into a fun day for the community. We provide free food and drinks and invite the local charities we support to come and have a day of fun with us. On this day, we combine forces with the different car and motorcycle clubs on the island — the Classic Car Club, STX Jeep Club and the 340 Misfits Motorcycle Club — and we ride out to the picnic location. The drive starts mid-island from the Sunny Isles Shopping Center and heads to Cramer’s Park Beach where the picnic is held. What do you think is a hidden gem on island? Some people don’t know it, but the most southern point of the United States is located right here on St. Croix at Point Udall. We often visit the site with the other car clubs when we have a full moon because the view up there is priceless! What’s your favorite local dish? Our club loves food! The one thing we can agree to be a favorite local dish is kallaloo. Even though everyone has their own version of this soup, our local greens are what make ours different. I personally enjoy mixed kallaloo with seafood and pigtail because it’s like the best of both worlds. VISIT U.S. Virgin Islands 2019

LIVING THE DREAM I have had the opportunity to live on St. Croix for the past few months. During this time, I’ve fallen in love with this island as I scouted venues for photo shoots and destination weddings. St. Croix is graced with natural beauty, culture and history. On a clear day you can see St. Thomas, St. John and a few of the British Virgin Islands. The ocean breeze here is constant and welcoming on hot days, perfect for a ceremony that would take place outside. While living here, I’ve had the privilege of getting to know the bride and groom, Drs. Loriann and Jay Laugle, two local chiropractors. Jay was born and raised on St. Croix, and he met his wife, Loriann, while they attended medical school in the U.S. mainland. Loriann is a native of Indiana. Their reception took place in the beautiful area of Judith’s Fancy, a lovely spot peppered with the ruins of 300-year-old Danish sugar mills. The rest of their special day was spent in historic downtown Frederiksted, where formal pictures were taken. One of the activities the bride and groom arranged for out-of-town guests was a day trip to various historic and unique places, which included a Cruzan Rum Distillery tour. St. Croix truly has so many gorgeous places for couples that are looking for something off the beaten path. HELPFUL TIPS FOR NAVIGATING YOUR WAY AROUND OUR ISLANDS BANKING Currency is the U.S. dollar. There are ATMs located throughout. Banks are generally open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with service windows open later. Some banks have Saturday hours, 9 a.m. to noon. Traveler’s checks and major credit cards are accepted. There is no sales tax in the territory.

COMMUNICATIONS Most accommodations have in-room telephones. When calling the U.S. mainland, dial “1,” then the area code and number. The area code for the USVI is 340. There is no need to dial “1” and the area code when

making local calls from a USVI landline. Most major U.S. cell phone service providers have coverage areas in the USVI. Many accommodations offer Internet access; and Wi-Fi is available in select locations. There are also several Internet cafés.

MAIL & BUSINESS SERVICES U.S. postal rates apply on the U.S. Virgin Islands. The U.S. Postal Service offers Express Mail service that reaches any U.S. destination the following day if mailed before noon or within two days if mailed after noon. Priority Mail reaches the U.S. mainland in three to five days. Major couriers

such as FedEx and UPS offer service to and from the U.S. Virgin Islands.
