Naples, too, touts signature attractions you simply cannot miss. In southwest Florida’s recreational epicenter, “something for everyone” isn’t just an ad-driven cliché. It’s an understatement. A Naples vacation promises sun, sand and sea; unparalleled eco-adventures; sophisticated urban amenities and a wealth of fun-filled activities — and it’s easy to find them. It’s all here — everything you need to have the time of your life. But don’t write off Naples as just another one-size-fits-all tourist trap. Many of its most popular attractions are unique to the region. You’ll make the most of your visit here if you make like a native and set out on a real Naples adventure. Discover the Wetlands Don’t even think of going home without slogging through the mud on a swamp buggy. Invented in the 1930s by Naples resident Ed Frank, these ungainly vehicles easily traverse the area’s boggy terrain. But buggies aren’t the only way to get around a swamp. A trip to Naples isn’t complete without an Everglades

airboat ride. Powered by propeller, the flatbottomed vessels are able to skim across the surface of an inhospitable marsh. Explore the Everglades It’s not a crime to visit Naples without setting foot in the Everglades, but it certainly would be a shame if you missed your opportunity. The vast “sea of grass,” as the Seminoles called it, is one of the world’s great ecosystems, home to the American crocodile, the Florida panther, the West Indian manatee and four varieties of sea turtles, not to mention 1,300 native plant species, including the rare American ghost orchid, believed to grow only here and in parts of Cuba. Celebrate Sunsets You can watch the sun go down anywhere in the world, but sunsets in southern Florida are especially spectacular. That’s because light is scattered by miniscule particles in the atmosphere, including, believe it or not, windborne dust from the Sahara Desert. maritime memorabilia and other one-of-a-kind offerings at downtown Tin City, a 1920s-era seafood processing plant that now houses more than 40 shops and eateries. Tin City is just a walk away from Fifth Avenue South, Naples’ Rodeo Drive, where you’ll find upscale boutiques filled with the latest fashions. Cultivate Culture Clustered along Shirley Street are many of the 45 working artists’ studios and galleries that comprise the Naples Art District. Stop in to browse or chat. If time allows, head out to the Big Cypress studio of Clyde Butcher, widely praised for his evocative fine-art photographs of the Everglades. Time Travel A century ago, Robert Roberts worked a 13-acre cattle ranch east of Naples at the edge of Big Cypress Swamp. Now known as the Immokalee Pioneer Museum, the old homestead offers visitors a rare glimpse of the daily working life of the hunters, trappers and traders who tamed the wilderness that was southwest Florida. Isolated settlers of the same era bought and sold hides, furs and produce at the Smallwood Store, a modern-day museum in the heart of the Ten Thousand Islands. Closer to your

Southwest Florida’s first museum for children and families to learn through play, Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples features hands-on exhibit galleries. The City of Naples Pier is a must-see for all ages. Extending 1,000 feet into the Gulf, it’s located at the west end of the city, off of 12th Avenue South. Public parking is easy to find and in close proximity to the pier. Walking out on the pier is something everyone can enjoy — whether you’re wearing a bathing suit or more formal wear — so don’t let the grandparents make any excuses. You’ll see locals and visitors alike fishing, strolling and animal- and people-watching. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a pod of dolphins swimming near the pier. End your beautiful day with a free public performance by the local Naples star, the sun. The City of Naples has many spectacular parks and beaches, many of which have full facilities and amenities for park- and beachgoers. The City of Naples Beach is where you’ll find the fishing pier. Lowdermilk Park and beach near downtown Naples is quite popular with families. The beach at Naples Grande Beach Resort is within picturesque Clam Pass Park. There are other nearby beaches that are worth the drive, including Vanderbilt Beach, Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park and Lely Barefoot Beach. The Everglades is one of the most unique and beautiful environments to explore, and Big Cypress Natural Preserve
is a wonderful place to start your journey into the Everglades and its inhabitants. Everyone loves dolphins, so book a dolphin sightseeing tour for the children and adults to enjoy aboard a Pure Naples boat docked at Tin City. Boarding In Naples you can hang 10 and a whole lot more. Try your hand at traditional surfing or one of its increasingly popular spinoffs, such as paddleboarding, kiteboarding and windsurfing. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has rocketed to the top of many water lovers’ must-do lists. The concept is simple. You stand up on a board and traverse the water with a long, pole-like paddle. Kitesurfing and windsurfing require a bit more skill. Capturing wind in an attached sail or parachute enables a boarder to cut through the water and skim the surface like a figure skater. Boating You’ll have no trouble renting or chartering a vessel of any size and sort in Naples — everything from a cabin cruiser to a kayak. Launch your fishing boat from a city ramp, dock your yacht at a full-service marina or explore Everglades channels in a canoe. Snorkeling is easier than diving, and you don’t have to worry about certification. Just rent a snorkel mask and fins right on the beach and you’re good to go. You won’t be able to peruse the ins and outs of a shipwreck, but you’ll be surprised at how much you can see from the surface. several good snorkeling sites are accessible from the shore of a Naples beach. Fishing Naples is the real deal when it comes to fishing, whether you choose to cast your line across an inland stream or plumb the briny depths of the Gulf. Tarpon-rich tidal rivers and backcountry creeks were made for fly-fishing. Snook, flounder and jack roam the waters that surround barrier islands. Or venture out in open waters and you’ll have a good chance of landing a monster grouper or mackerel. Fishing is popular at Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park and from the historic pier at Naples Municipal Beach. Slipping & Sliding You’ll have a hard time corralling the kids after a day at Sun-N-Fun Lagoon. In fact, you

may not want to leave, either. Collier County’s waterpark boasts five exhilarating slides and rides, four swimming pools, and a 10-foot-wide meandering river made for leisurely tubing. Plentiful amenities include locker rooms with showers and snack stands and cafés.
Parasailing is another way to get high, so to speak. You’re strapped to a parachute-like canopy and towed by a boat. The chute catches the wind, and it’s up, up and away. How high can you fly? The towline will enable you to look down on the water from as high as 500 feet.
Soaring In Naples, watersports can take you to undreamed-of heights, and unlike unlucky Icarus, you won’t have to fashion your wings from feathers and wax. You can boot up on a flyboard or strap on a jetpack. Here’s how it works. Pressurized water from a WaveRunner or other craft blasts up through a hose connected to nozzles under specially designed boots, launching you skyward like a bottle rocket. Jetpacks also are powered by pressurized water, but the hose is attached to a pack on your back.
Wave Riding Satisfy your need for speed by straddling a rented Jet Ski or WaveRunner. Both are aquatic motorbikes that provide the same experience. Walk softly and carry a good camera, and you may just make a new friend — of the feather, fur or fin variety. Barefoot Beach Preserve: Drive slowly, and brake for gopher tortoises. The threatened reptiles like to hang out here, where they sometimes try to beat the heat by napping under parked cars. They’re called gophers, incidentally, because they dig burrows to protect themselves from the elements and voracious predators. In the summer months, loggerhead sea turtles lay eggs in the sand here. In winter, migratory osprey chicks hatch in nests atop poles.
Bonita Beach Dog Park: Fido runs free along this shore at the edge of Lovers Key State Park just north of Naples. No leashes. No fences. No worries — for canines or their human pals.

Clam Pass Park: Keep your camera ready as you explore trails that snake through red, white and black mangroves. The 35acre habitat for shorebirds and other creatures is just a boardwalk stroll or tram ride from Naples Grande Beach Resort. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park: Amenities are plentiful at this family favorite. So are eagles, ospreys and all sorts of shorebirds. On Florida’s Paradise Coast, you can have a terrific time on terra firma, even if your aquatic tolerance level extends no farther than the shower. Swing a golf club, hike along a scenic trail, lob a tennis ball or spin your wheels in a swamp buggy. In this city, graced by year-round balmy weather and postcard-perfect scenery, active options are plentiful for every “grounded” member of the group. Biking With its scenic trails and dedicated bike lanes, Naples was made for cycling. Naples Velo, the area’s oldest cycling club, will send

Two hundred years later, a sophisticated city in southwest Florida is doing just that. Carved from the wilderness just a few years after Wordsworth’s death in 1850, Naples is renowned for its luxurious resorts, upscale shopping and world-class dining. But there’s another side to the city. It’s your portal to the great outdoors, including the Everglades, the world’s unique “river of grass,” as native Seminoles called it. Photographers, birders and other wildlife spotters stroll along a 2.25-mile-long boardwalk that meanders through the nation’s largest old-growth cypress forest and a tropical

Perhaps you’ll be as lucky as the boardwalking tourist who stopped to admire the foliage a few years back and astounded botanists the world over when she managed to spot the exceedingly rare American ghost orchid. It’s so rare, in fact, that its few known Everglades locations are kept secret, to discourage poachers. At Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, follow hiking trails through pine flatwoods and under majestic cypress domes. It’s unlikely that you’ll spot one of the furtive, endangered cats, but it’s certain that you will come away with a good understanding of how the creatures live in the wild. Like the sanctuary and the refuge, Big Cypress National Preserve is a vast federally protected wilderness that is essential to maintaining the Everglades’ intricate ecosystem. It’s a haven for wildlife, including herons, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, bobcats and, of course, alligators. Hunting,
fishing, hiking and biking are among active options for outdoor aficionados. Take a long, leisurely wilderness drive or rev up your outing behind the wheel of an off-road vehicle. The Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge safeguards mangrove habitats and a rich diversity of animals and plants, including several endangered species. The 35,000-acre refuge is part of the continent’s largest mangrove forest, which dominates tidal fringes and islands, or keys. To the north are brackish marshlands peppered with ponds, small oak hammocks, patches of cabbage palms and stretches of tropical hardwoods, such as gumbo limbo. Amazing Is Easy If eco-outings are your passion, prepare to be indulged. In and around Naples are many amazing ways to walk on the wild side. Both companies maintain a fleet of vehicles, from sedans to stretch limousines. Naples Transportation & Tours also offers excursions on land and water. Take in scenery and historic sights, book a fully guided Everglades excursion, have fun in the water, hop on a trolley and learn more about the area’s culture.
Pure Florida, moreover, sets you up with an array of water transport options, including boats for fishing excursions and sightseeing tours. Admire the sprawling mansions overlooking Naples Bay and spot dolphins from the deck of the M/V Naples Explorer, or rent a Jet Ski and explore on your own. The 170-acre Naples Botanical Garden is a world-class garden paradise featuring the plants of the tropics and subtropics between the latitudes of 26 degrees north and 26 degrees south, including Brazil, the Caribbean, Southeast Asia and Florida. It’s like Bengay or IcyHot, but it’s made with eucalyptus, menthol and black pepper. It’s also in a push-up tube and smells like the eucalyptus rather than the menthol. What’s your secret for great skin? Honestly, it’s using as few ingredients as possible and keeping my skin clean. Less is better. I’ll use shea butter, cocoa butter, lavender oil and geranium oil. You don’t need a lot of ingredients. We see the media telling us to use anti-aging products, but I think we should embrace aging. It reflects maturity and a life well-lived. You should let your own beauty radiate. When traveling, what are your skin-care essentials? I always take our Normal Formula Face Oil. It’s a small bottle, so it’s TSA-friendly; and you can use it all over your body and in your hair… Just a few drops go a long way. It’s a great multipurpose oil. What is your favorite hidden gem in Naples that visitors should check out? One of my favorite restaurants is Grouper & Chips, right across from NCH Downtown Naples Hospital. It’s teeny tiny, but the staff is incredible, and the food is amazing.

Ty Ernst Owner, T-Michaels Steak & Lobster House
Not everyone is as lucky as Ty Ernst. While some teenagers are still figuring out what they want to be when they grow up, Ernst discovered his passion for the restaurant business while he was still in high school. “I became interested in the business, and I realized back then that I enjoyed the challenge of creating great meals and great dining experiences for people,” says Ernst. After opening restaurants in Fort Lauderdale, Ernst was looking to open another in the Naples area. He found an unbelievable location — and that’s when T-Michaels opened in July 2013. Today, T-Michaels has become one of the best steak houses in southwest Florida, serving prime steaks and fresh seafood every night with beautiful waterfront views of the Venetian Bay. The father of two — who is engaged to Tai Rambert, the former Ms. Florida US Continental — is a constant presence in the restaurant. “I’m usually standing at the door to meet and greet you. I want to ensure everything is superb during your experience,” says Ernst. “I visit every table. This is the T-Michaels experience!” What’s your favorite dish on the menu? My favorite dish on the menu is the bone-in rib eye. Most of our customers say it’s the best they’ve ever had. Can you share a couple of memorable moments in your career? We’ve had the privilege of having Governor Rick Scott in the restaurant and many celebrities. But nothing beats the happy faces, warm hugs, stories of our American history and the camaraderie I witness every Veterans Day when we feed every vet for free. That will always be at the top of my list. Who has been your greatest source of inspiration? My father, who lived every day with endless energy, took great take care of his family and defended his country with honor. What is your favorite local hangout? I enjoy going to Kilwins on Fifth Avenue. On my days off, I indulge in some of the best chocolate-covered strawberries around while sitting outside on the patio. Great place and great people. What would most people be surprised to learn about you? That I was born in Okinawa, Japan, while my father served in the Air Force, and I was named after a typhoon that came over the island when I was born.

Mercato shopping and entertainment center drives that scene with a wide selection of establishments that serve food and drink, and often have live music into the wee hours. Over the years, the brand has gained a popularity and loyalty that still amazes Negoshian. “Even after all these years, I still get butterflies when I see ladies in TN. It’s an honor that of all the choices they have to fill their closets, they chose to purchase and wear something that our TN team spent hours designing and perfecting.” With a degree in marketing from the University of South Florida, Negoshian began her career at Saks Fifth Avenue with an elite clientele in the Palm Beach area. Her goal, she says, is to help women feel confident about themselves. She attributes much of her own confidence to support from her family. From her stepfather and business partner, Tom, to her “momager,” Linda, and her younger siblings Megan and Todd, Negoshian’s tribe is woven tightly in the fabric of her enterprise. Her newest endeavor — inviting women to market her fashions at “parties” they host from home — draws inspiration, she says, from her life with husband David and their children, Cooper and Ellery. “It’s the work-life-family balance that so many are seeking,” Negoshian says. “They set goals and work at a pace that is comfortable for their lifestyle. Ed & Marti Koehler At first it might seem that these married artists couldn’t be more different. He’s a selftaught sculptor. She’s a classically trained painter. But here’s what makes this duo dynamic. Both native Floridians are more than comfortable coloring outside the lines that confine our concept of traditional art. Michelangelo transformed marble into masterpieces. Ed Koehler coaxes metals and epoxies into sconces, floor lamps and more. What gives Koehler’s organic sculptures standout appeal is the craftsman’s penchant for mixing media — from fiberglass and mosaics to steel and aluminum. “No one does what I do in my particular style,” says Koehler, and that’s putting it lightly. Picture a towering horseshoe crab fashioned from fiberglass, or a steel wall sconce posing as a driftwood branch. Nature, as you might rightly suspect, provides all of Koehler’s inspiration. Florida’s vivid colors, above and below the water, impressed the boy from Big Pine Key in the Florida Keys, who worked at a variety of jobs before

following his passion for art. Wife Marti Koehler followed a more traditional path. She studied in New Orleans, Tallahassee and New York City as she sought ways to break down and reimagine the colors, shapes and textures of her natural surroundings. “I’m trying to push the limits of certain themes already done by other artists, like beaches or figures,” she says. “I try and push the concepts to a different direction, and I try to use a variety of mixed materials to make that happen.” In a new series of paintings, for example, she explores the geometry of synchronized swimmers. The swimmers appear to be positioned perfectly, but what else is going on? “It feels like it could be a representation of two different ways of thinking — poised on the outside with something churning under the surface.”

Dennis Goodman He took a “leap of faith” the day he left his property management company to begin a career capturing images of South Florida’s vibrant wildlife. But Dennis Goodman needed more than faith to pave his road to success. He needed patience and determination. “It wasn’t easy making money off photos, so I would work for someone in the evenings and go to art shows on the weekends,” Goodman recalls. He kept at it, “with my wife and kids supporting me,” and eventually he was able to open his own office and work full time as a photographer. Goodman grew up in Minnesota and moved to Naples in 1985. Like Ed Koehler, he is largely self-taught. He attributes his success to his ability to “understand” the scenes around him. “See the light,” he advises new photographers. “Look at the background and have a unique sense of feeling before you take the photo. Then you will show the true character of the subject.” The driving force behind Goodman’s nature-based photography is his passion for
the environment. He has teamed up with local groups and conservancies like the National Audubon Society to promote environmental conservation. He hopes, he says, that through his work people will see nature in a new way. Goodman loves what he does and has established a name for himself. His work has been featured just about anywhere you can imagine — from South Florida magazine covers and art exhibits to hotels and golf clubs. He tells aspiring photographers, “It takes persistence and, most importantly, patience. I never thought I’d make this kind of living or have a space or do these things. Anybody can put their mind to whatever they choose to do.”
