A yarn worth thinking about... ...perhaps the most luxurious yarn to be found anywhere in the world. We find it at the Barbera textile mill in Biella, Italy. They use it to weave a fabric that is 70% cashmere, 30% silk. Softer and lighter than cashmere. Often called ‘the millionaires cashmere.’ And from this marvelous fabric, the ultimate Maus & Hoffman jacket. Made for us, by hand, in Northern Italy. We know the tailors, we know the fabric, we know the difference. That’s what makes this jacket Maus & Hoffman.

Know the difference.

By Jeffrey Dollar Laign You wouldn’t leave Paris without posting a picture of the Eiffel Tower or pass up the pyramids on a trip to Giza. Naples, too, touts signature attractions you simply cannot miss. In southwest Florida’s recreational epicenter, “something for everyone” isn’t just an ad-driven cliché. It’s an understatement. A Naples vacation promises sun, sand and sea; unparalleled eco-adventures; sophisticated urban amenities and a wealth of fun-filled activities — and it’s easy to find them. It’s all here — everything you need to have the time of your life. But don’t write off Naples as just another one-size-fits-all tourist trap. Many of its most popular attractions are unique to the region. You’ll make the most of your visit here if you make like a native and set out on a real Naples adventure. Discover the Wetlands Don’t even think of going home without slogging through the mud on a swamp buggy. Invented in the 1930s by Naples resident Ed Frank, these ungainly vehicles easily traverse the area’s boggy terrain. But buggies aren’t the only way to get around a swamp. The vast “sea of grass,” as the Seminoles called it, is one of the world’s great ecosystems, home to the American crocodile, the Florida panther, the West Indian manatee and four varieties of sea turtles, not to mention 1,300 native plant species, including the rare American ghost orchid, believed to grow only here and in parts of Cuba. Celebrate Sunsets You can watch the sun go down anywhere in the world, but sunsets in southern Florida are especially spectacular. That’s because light is scattered by miniscule particles in the atmosphere, including, believe it or not, windborne dust from the Sahara Desert. Water reflects the light, enhancing the sky’s palette of warm spectral hues. Historic Naples Pier is a well-favored place to watch the star of our solar system as it appears to sink below the horizon. Make the moment truly romantic

hotel is the Old Naples historic district, anchored by the well-preserved Palm Cottage, which dates from 1895. Eat an Alligator A Naples vacation is all about adventure. Stoke your adventurous spirit at dinner, too. Scores of restaurants in and around the city serve up the tails of the prehistoric-looking reptile that dominates the Everglades. Some folks say it tastes like — you guessed it — chicken. Order an appetizer or entree and decide for yourself. Frybread is another regional delicacy you might want to sample if you have the chance. The deepfried dough savored by native Seminoles may be served with butter or honey, or filled like a taco. Fine dining is abundant in sophisticated Naples, especially in world-class restaurants downtown. And fresh, succulent seafood, of course, is the star on menus throughout the city.

Cheeca Lodge & Spa, a Florida Keys icon since 1946, reopens its doors to guests in early 2018 after a complete post–Hurricane Irma property renewal. Cheeca is located in Islamorada — the Sports Fishing Capital of the World — and sits on a private 27-acre oceanfront estate with lush gardens and 1,200 feet of palm-fringed beachfront. A 2017 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award winner, the resort is reminiscent of a classic Keys fishing lodge, boasting 214 guest rooms, suites and bungalows styled in chic island décor. An authentic and spirited tradition of barefoot elegance, genuine service and warm hospitality personifies this island home, where you can relax, be yourself and create treasured memories with family, friends or colleagues. Cheeca Lodge & Spa offers three distinct restaurants, as well as three on-site bars and lounges, so there are plenty of options to please every palate. Atlantic’s Edge features a seasonal fine-dining menu of seafood from its own saltwater pantry, prime steaks and fresh local produce. Nikai Sushi Bar & Restaurant offers the Florida Keys’ freshest sushi and a selection of more than 30 hot and cold Japanese sakes. Limoncello offers hearty Italian classics in a relaxed, familyfriendly atmosphere. For the ultimate in tropical ambience and sweeping views of the Atlantic, head down to the beachfront Tiki Bar and enjoy a refreshing cocktail and famous Cheeca Burger, alfresco. The perfect place to indulge and get pampered is at The Spa at Cheeca Lodge. Nestled among cascading waterfalls and a Tahitian-inspired freshwater lagoon, the 5,700-square-foot facility features an adult-only heated lap pool with butler service, seven treatment rooms, poolside cabanas with internet service, fully equipped fitness center, wet room with Vichy shower, in-room and oceanfront massage therapy and more. Additional amenities include an extensive line of watersports and ocean excursions, 525-foot wooden fishing pier, oceanfront family pool, Camp Cheeca for kids ages 5 through 12, family recreation center and a Jack Nicklaus–designed nine-hole par-3 golf course.

Peaceful and relaxing, Naples conjures up memories of family weekends spent on the beautiful beaches, including shelling, sunbathing, building sandcastles and flying a kite. a visit to Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens. In addition to Florida native wildlife, there are many animals from around the world for all to enjoy. Southwest Florida’s first museum for children and families to learn through play, Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples features hands-on exhibit galleries. Children of all ages can journey through the swamps of the Everglades, weave through a maze, climb a two-story banyan tree or experiment with the water play station. “Play, Learn & Dream” is at the core of the museum’s philosophy. Expect to play along with your children, as they learn and experience the museum. A classic water park, Sun-N-Fun Lagoon has water features for young and old alike. Waterslides for the adventurous, Sunny’s River for the lazy, Family Falls for everyone, Turtle Cove for 5 to 12 years old, the Tadpole Pool for the tykes and the Dolphin Dive and Lap Pool for those that like diving and swimming laps. For Young & Old Young or old, fast or slow, Naples is for everyone; and that means that your family can all share a beautiful experience. Here are some activities that you can all do hand in hand.

The City of Naples Pier is a must-see for all ages. Extending 1,000 feet into the Gulf, it’s located at the west end of the city, off of 12th Avenue South. Public parking is easy to find and in close proximity to the pier. Walking out on the pier is something everyone can enjoy — whether you’re wearing a bathing suit or more formal wear — so don’t let the grandparents make any excuses. You’ll see locals and visitors alike fishing, strolling and animal- and people-watching. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a pod of dolphins swimming near the pier. End your beautiful day with a free public performance by the local Naples star, the sun. The City of Naples has many spectacular parks and beaches, many of which have full facilities and amenities for park- and beachgoers. The City of Naples Beach is where you’ll find the fishing pier. Lowdermilk Park and beach near downtown Naples is quite popular with families. The beach at Naples Grande Beach Resort is within picturesque Clam Pass Park. There are other nearby beaches that are worth the drive, including Vanderbilt Beach, Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park and Lely Barefoot Beach. The Everglades is one of the most unique and beautiful environments to explore, and Big Cypress Natural Preserve

is a wonderful place to start your journey into the Everglades and its inhabitants. Everyone loves dolphins, so book a dolphin sightseeing tour for the children and adults to enjoy aboard a Pure Naples boat docked at Tin City. Pure Naples has other tours, including shelling, bird-watching and sunset tours. Another local favorite is the Sweet Liberty sailing catamaran, which also offers beautiful day trips but does so using sail power. Nothing compares to a sail cat! For Adventure Seekers Naples also caters to the more adventurous with a bevy of activities on land and at sea. There are plenty of watersports for all ages. From snorkeling and scuba diving to parasailing and Jet Skiing, you’ll find an array of thrilling options. Landlubbers will enjoy cycling, off-roading in the Everglades, camping and more. Although almost anyone can buy or rent equipment or vehicles and set out on their own, it’s best to book a tour with one of the knowledgeable guides in the area. Experienced guides can help make potentially hazardous and highly regulated activities a much safer and more fun experience. N A P L E S G R A N D E . CO M

By Jeffrey Dollar Laign Warm and welcoming, the Gulf of Mexico laps at sandy shores from Florida to the Yucatán. What sets Naples apart from many other Gulf towns is its tourism-fueled drive to make the most of its coast. Sea buffs from around the world come to Naples each year to soak up sun on a palm-fringed beach and to enjoy the water in ways that they may never have imagined: skimming the surface on a board, exploring the deep on a dive, paddling through twisting mangroves, even soaring high above the waves. Here are just some of the ways you can get wet in Naples. So, come on in; the water’s fine.

By Vanessa Molina Santamaria

Manager, All Water Excursions & AWE Watersports

Trudy Stemen and her husband, Jay, met in Naples in 1988. After their wedding, they honeymooned in Antigua and fell in love with the water excursions on the Caribbean island. When they returned home, they bought into an existing company, Nautilus Boat Tours, and later bought out the partners. Since then, the company has continued to evolve; and in 2016, the Stemens further expanded to their own location at All Water Excursions Marina, located directly on the Cocohatchee River with direct access to the Gulf of Mexico. AWE now offers a wide array of activities for water enthusiasts, including kayaking, paddleboarding, WaveRunners, backwater fishing, offshore fishing, private charters, sunset cruises, ecotours and more. What makes Naples such a great destination for watersports? Naples is the jewel of Florida. Most of the year we have calm seas on the Gulf of Mexico side, where watersports provide exhilarating experiences and memories to last forever. The abundant wildlife, such as tropical birds, manatees and dolphins, will interact with you on your watersports experiences. Fishing is also easily accessible — within minutes, you could be catching a snook in the backwater or a grouper offshore. What’s your favorite watersport activity? I cannot single one out, as they are all favorites at different times of the day. In the morning, departing into the mangrove forest on a kayak, you are immediately in a different world where you can unplug from everything and be one with nature. During the day, you can go on an exhilarating WaveRunner tour and see dolphins, which is so much fun. When the fish are biting, there is nothing better than catching a redfish — what a challenge! And don’t miss the breathtaking sunsets during a sunset cruise. It’s the only way to end your day! AWE’s WaveRunner tours are very unique. What can a rider expect on the tour? Our WaveRunner tours are the best in southwest Florida and are 28 miles long. Our guides depart from the AWE Marina and travel down the Cocohatchee River through the mangrove forest. We ride into the Gulf of Mexico and travel north past north Naples and Bonita Springs and enter into Estero Bay, where we have approximately 75 resident dolphins and manatees. Our guides point out the wildlife and tell you all about them throughout the tour. The dolphins love to play in the wake of the WaveRunners and interact with the riders. On the return, we travel through the Intracoastal Waterway, where we see multimillion-dollar homes. What if you’ve never experienced watersports before? Our team will get you comfortable and on the water in no time. We can get you on board for an experience of a lifetime! What should visitors put on their “must-do” list? Naples on the water is not to be missed! Don’t leave without experiencing nature and the outdoors. You can immerse yourself in both during our kayaking, fishing or WaveRunner tours — or sip a cocktail, relax and see the sights on a sunset cruise.

Boarding In Naples you can hang 10 and a whole lot more. Try your hand at traditional surfing or one of its increasingly popular spinoffs, such as paddleboarding, kiteboarding and windsurfing. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has rocketed to the top of many water lovers’ must-do lists. The concept is simple. You stand up on a board and traverse the water with a long, pole-like paddle. Kitesurfing and windsurfing require a bit more skill. Capturing wind in an attached sail or parachute enables a boarder to cut through the water and skim the surface like a figure skater. Boating You’ll have no trouble renting or chartering a vessel of any size and sort in Naples — everything from a cabin cruiser to a kayak. Launch your fishing boat from a city ramp, dock your yacht at a full-service marina or explore Everglades channels in a canoe. Paddling pros will enjoy navigating through the 99-mile Wilderness Waterway at Everglades National Park or the Paradise Coast Blueway, a system of GPS-marked trails for kayaks, canoes and similar craft. If pumping up your arm muscles is not part of your agenda, rent a motorboat and let the outboard engine do the work. Bowriders and deck boats are great for groups into watersports. Larger luxury vessels offer creature comforts like airconditioned galleys. And anglers can choose from boats designed to maneuver along inland waterways or to cut across the sea.

Marco Island is the largest of the Ten Thousand Islands, a string of mostly uninhabited mangrove islands off the coast of the Everglades.

A cruise, of course, is an ever-popular way to enjoy the Naples side of the Gulf. Take in the sights, embark on a wildlifespotting safari or deck-dance the evening away on a romantic voyage to nowhere. Take in all the splendor of a Gulf sunset aboard Sweet Liberty, a 53-foot-long catamaran that accommodates more than 40 guests. The sailing charter company also offers nature, shelling and sightseeing cruises. Naples Princess Cruises also puts you on the water in memorable ways. The Naples Princess, a 105-foot-long luxury yacht with a glossy

34

cherry wood interior, gold-plated reflective ceilings and a captain’s lounge outfitted with rich leather chairs and large viewing windows, offers popular sightseeing and sunset cruises. Pure Florida’s Pure Naples concession at Tin City also serves up the city’s natural and man-made attractions from the comfort of M/V Naples Explorer or M/V Double Sunshine. Pure Naples, moreover, is a good place to rent watercraft, including a range of fishing boats, speedy jet boats and zippy Jet Skis. If you dream of spotting playful dolphins or combing a solitary beach for shells, board the Calusa Spirit at Marco Island Watersports. The company also provides the means for you to take to the sky with an adrenaline-pumping parasailing adventure, straddle a banana boat, zoom around on a WaveRunner, balance on a stand-up paddleboard or rent a kayak for close encounters of the aquatic kind. It goes without saying that nobody should go home without venturing into the iconic Everglades. What better way to explore the sea of grass than by skimming over it aboard an iconic Florida airboat? Airboats showed up in Florida not long after they were invented early in the 20th century and

quickly became the transport of choice for traversing marshy regions. The flat-bottomed vessels can go where many deep-water vessels can’t. That’s because they aren’t encumbered by a motor that dips below the waterline. Instead, a giant propeller at the back of the boat jets you over saw grass beds. Diving & Snorkeling Naples offers good diving year-round, and Gulf waters tend to be warm and inviting. Divers are invited to explore vibrant coral reefs, fathom the mysteries of a sunken ship and hang out with titan turtles and colonies of multihued fish. Dive companies will set you up with transportation and gear: a wet suit, oxygen tank and fins. Many also offer classes if you aren’t certified to dive. Snorkeling is easier than diving, and you don’t have to worry about certification. Just rent a snorkel mask and fins right on the beach and you’re good to go. You won’t be able to peruse the ins and outs of a shipwreck, but you’ll be surprised at how much you can see from the surface. A tour boat can take you out in the Gulf to spots well-known by snorkeling aficionados, and

several good snorkeling sites are accessible from the shore of a Naples beach. Fishing Naples is the real deal when it comes to fishing, whether you choose to cast your line across an inland stream or plumb the briny depths of the Gulf. Tarpon-rich tidal rivers and backcountry creeks were made for fly-fishing. Snook, flounder and jack roam the waters that surround barrier islands. Or venture out in open waters and you’ll have a good chance of landing a monster grouper or mackerel. Fishing is popular at Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park and from the historic pier at Naples Municipal Beach. Slipping & Sliding You’ll have a hard time corralling the kids after a day at Sun-N-Fun Lagoon. In fact, you

may not want to leave, either. Collier County’s waterpark boasts five exhilarating slides and rides, four swimming pools, and a 10-foot-wide meandering river made for leisurely tubing. Plentiful amenities include locker rooms with showers and snack stands and cafés.

Parasailing is another way to get high, so to speak. You’re strapped to a parachute-like canopy and towed by a boat. The chute catches the wind, and it’s up, up and away. How high can you fly? The towline will enable you to look down on the water from as high as 500 feet.

Soaring In Naples, watersports can take you to undreamed-of heights, and unlike unlucky Icarus, you won’t have to fashion your wings from feathers and wax. You can boot up on a flyboard or strap on a jetpack. Here’s how it works. Pressurized water from a WaveRunner or other craft blasts up through a hose connected to nozzles under specially designed boots, launching you skyward like a bottle rocket. Jetpacks also are powered by pressurized water, but the hose is attached to a pack on your back.

Wave Riding Satisfy your need for speed by straddling a rented Jet Ski or WaveRunner. Both are aquatic motorbikes that provide the same experience. Zip around by yourself or cut across Naples Bay on a guided tour. Marco Island Watersports offers a WaveRunner excursion through the lush waterways of the Ten Thousand islands. Unforgettable! Wet & Wild Humans aren’t the only animals that relish a day at the beach. From frolicking

“The beaches at Naples and nearby Marco Island are consistently rated as among the BEST IN THE COUNTRY.” dolphins to double-breasted cormorants, all sorts of critters thrive along the sandy shores of Naples. Walk softly and carry a good camera, and you may just make a new friend — of the feather, fur or fin variety. Barefoot Beach Preserve: Drive slowly, and brake for gopher tortoises. The threatened reptiles like to hang out here, where they sometimes try to beat the heat by napping under parked cars. They’re called gophers, incidentally, because they dig burrows to protect themselves from the elements and voracious predators. In the summer months, loggerhead sea turtles lay eggs in the sand here. In winter, migratory osprey chicks hatch in nests atop poles.

While you’re waiting for a photo op, you can engage in a spirited game of volleyball, zip around on a Jet Ski or touch the sky beneath a parasail.

Clam Pass Park: Keep your camera ready as you explore trails that snake through red, white and black mangroves. The 35acre habitat for shorebirds and other creatures is just a boardwalk stroll or tram ride from Naples Grande Beach Resort. Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park: Amenities are plentiful at this family favorite. So are eagles, ospreys and all sorts of shorebirds. Summer sea turtles nest along the shore, and stingrays like to bury their barbed tails in the sand at the edge of the water. Delnor-Wiggins also is a prime fishing spot. Anglers who reel in sea trout and pompano may want to post selfies with their new fishy friends. Two-legged friends back home will be green with envy. By Jeffrey Dollar Laign Naples is widely known for its staggering array of watersports, but landlubbers won’t be left to dry while companions splash about. On Florida’s Paradise Coast, you can have a terrific time on terra firma, even if your aquatic tolerance level extends no farther than the shower. Swing a golf club, hike along a scenic trail, lob a tennis ball or spin your wheels in a swamp buggy. In this city, graced by year-round balmy weather and postcard-perfect scenery, active options are plentiful for every “grounded” member of the group. you out on a variety of organized group rides. Or, if you’d rather go it on your own, you’ll find a wealth of bike paths that vary in length and difficulty. A popular ride is from Pelican Bay to Naples Pier, past gorgeous homes, lush landscaping and knock-your-socks-off water views. Motor Sports Got a need for speed? Naples puts drivers behind the wheels of all sorts of vehicles, some of which you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else. Swamp buggies, for example. Tours are offered at several visitor attractions, and you can catch a swamp buggy race at Florida Sports Park. Then there’s the Slingshot, a futuristic-looking roadster you can rent for hours of revved-up fun. Or stand up to the challenge of a Segway tour. The two-wheeled scooters can’t compete for speed with racing cars, but the experience of maneuvering one is no less enjoyable. Running Jog alone or join a group. Set your sights on a single aerobic mile or maintain your marathon status by tackling multiple miles. Naples is studded with running trails — more than 100. A favorite run starts at Lowdermilk Park and ends at Gordon Drive. Leafy trees lining Gulf Shore Boulevard provide lots of shade, much appreciated on hot summer days. Discover more running trails at mapmyrun.com. If people please you, sign up for a fun run with Gulf Coast Runners. The group hosts races throughout the year and offers training for beginners. Segway For an at-your-pace glide around town, book a Segway Tour with Naples Transportation & Tours. It offers a fun way to see Downtown

Naples while learning fun facts about the city. Segway of Naples in Collier County is the only AAA-approved tour and it provides a memorable experience and a great opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. The state-of-the-art headsets provide an up close and personal tour and an incredibly user-friendly experience not to be missed. Shooting Aim for the bull’s-eye at regional shooting galleries and emporiums. Professionally staffed indoor and outdoor facilities feature a range of firearms, electronically controlled target systems, simulators and even gun-fighting and bottle-breaking games you can enjoy without bullets. There are several shooting sites in and around Naples, as well as archery ranges, where you can swap out bullets for bows. Skateboarding Collier County is home to a number of sites sure to please even seasoned “woodpushers,” as some devotees of the sport call themselves. You can hone your skate skills at the 40,000-square-foot Edge Johnny Nocera Skate Park. It’s in Fleischmann Park and features a pro course with pyramids and banks, as well as a concrete bowl, pool and snake run.

Spectator Sports Catch a match at several public sites throughout the Naples region. Community parks and schools grant access to baseball, basketball and soccer. And some venues open the door to soccer, volleyball, skateboarding and even bocce ball. What’s more, Collier County commissioners are forging plans to build a multimilliondollar sports complex that would feature eight playing fields and baseball diamonds, and a championship venue for traveling regional and national amateur tournaments. Tennis Racket rogues can ratchet up their lobbing prowess at the more than 40 top-of-theline tennis centers in and around Naples. There are many public courts that serve up all you need for a spirited match. But if you’re a player staying at Naples Grande Beach Resort, there’s no need to venture beyond the premises. The tennis center at the resort offers 15 championshipquality Har-Tru courts and has been acclaimed as one of the top tennis resorts in the world. And the renowned Peter Burwash International tennis program caters to first-timers as well as first-class pros.

By Jeffrey Dollar Laign “Nothing can bring back the hour of splendour in the grass,” English poet William Wordsworth lamented famously at the turn of the 19th century. Two hundred years later, a sophisticated city in southwest Florida is doing just that. Carved from the wilderness just a few years after Wordsworth’s death in 1850, Naples is renowned for its luxurious resorts, upscale shopping and world-class dining. But there’s another side to the city. It’s your portal to the great outdoors, including the Everglades, the world’s unique “river of grass,” as native Seminoles called it. Take a tour or explore on your own and you’ll be rewarded with much more than an “hour of splendour.”

“The Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge jungle of ferns, orchids and wildflowers. Perhaps you’ll be as lucky as the boardwalking tourist who stopped to admire the foliage a few years back and astounded botanists the world over when she managed to spot the exceedingly rare American ghost orchid. It’s so rare, in fact, that its few known Everglades locations are kept secret, to discourage poachers. At Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, follow hiking trails through pine flatwoods and under majestic cypress domes. It’s unlikely that you’ll spot one of the furtive, endangered cats, but it’s certain that you will come away with a good understanding of how the creatures live in the wild. Like the sanctuary and the refuge, Big Cypress National Preserve is a vast federally protected wilderness that is essential to maintaining the Everglades’ intricate ecosystem. It’s a haven for wildlife, including herons, bald eagles, white-tailed deer, bobcats and, of course, alligators. Hunting,

fishing, hiking and biking are among active options for outdoor aficionados. Take a long, leisurely wilderness drive or rev up your outing behind the wheel of an off-road vehicle. The Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge safeguards mangrove habitats and a rich diversity of animals and plants, including several endangered species. The 35,000-acre refuge is part of the continent’s largest mangrove forest, which dominates tidal fringes and islands, or keys. To the north are brackish marshlands peppered with ponds, small oak hammocks, patches of cabbage palms and stretches of tropical hardwoods, such as gumbo limbo. Amazing Is Easy If eco-outings are your passion, prepare to be indulged. In and around Naples are many amazing ways to walk on the wild side. At Naples Grande Beach Resort, all you have to do is step outside. The resort boasts 23 waterfront acres next to a 200acre mangrove estuary. Spot birds along a

Dolphin Transportation and Naples Transportation & Tours can get you anywhere you want to go in just about any way you can imagine. Both companies maintain a fleet of vehicles, from sedans to stretch limousines. Naples Transportation & Tours also offers excursions on land and water. Take in scenery and historic sights, book a fully guided Everglades excursion, have fun in the water, hop on a trolley and learn more about the area’s culture.

Pure Florida, moreover, sets you up with an array of water transport options, including boats for fishing excursions and sightseeing tours. Your tour guide will help you to identify the species you encounter, or you can set out on your own and count the many birds you’ll spot. In either case, don’t forget your binoculars and camera! Dolphin and shelling tours: Our flipperwaving friends are among the planet’s most intelligent and social mammals. Get to know them as you explore the northern Ten Thousand Islands from the comfort of a tour boat. Meander down the mangrovelined Gordon River, through Naples Bay to Keewaydin Island, a great place to pick up seashells of every shape and hue. Naturalists on board will point out ospreys and bald eagles, as well as mollusks, sand dollars, sea urchins and horseshoe crabs. Kayak tours: Paddle a kayak through the heart of a nature park for a close encounter with exotic plants and intriguing critters. Tangled trees form tunnels in mangrove estuaries. They’re picturesque in daytime, romantic at sunset and downright haunting by the light of the moon. Your guide will fill you in with interesting facts and figures about the complex ecosystem you’re exploring. Manatee safaris: Sea cows, as these gentle Gulf Coast giants sometimes are called, are as curious about you as you are about them. Your tour boat captain is on hand to answer all your questions about the lovable aquatic mammals. Seaplane tours: On a Salt Island Seaplane excursion, you’ll get a private bird’s-eye view of the Everglades and southwest Florida shoreline. Experience the thrill as you go in for a water landing, then take in the scenery from high above. These are just some of the adventures awaiting you in Naples. Book your tour and start building a repertoire of tales the folks back home will want you to tell again and again. N A P L E S G R A N D E . CO M

Deanna Renda Founder of Naples Soap Company

Inspired by personal experience and a passion for creating organic skin-care products, Deanna Renda founded Naples Soap Company in 2009. The South Florida native and mother of two has remained true to her roots, opening 10 stores throughout Florida — from Naples all the way up to the Panhandle. All of Renda’s products reflect the simplicity of life near the ocean and the idea that, sometimes, less (ingredients) really is more. What makes NSC unique? Our team is passionate about our products. Our staff is amazing, and they can see the results that our customers are getting. It’s what fuels them to talk about our products with passion, to believe in the products and to want to help our customers find what’s best for them. What other products does NSC sell? Our eczema and psoriasis products are the top-selling lines. They’re all fragrance-free and start with our unique base formula, which is the same formula used in all our products. We also have lots of colorful and fragrant options, too, including shaving cream, The Muscle Stick, Muscle Balm and, of course, soaps. But we are a lifestyle health and wellness company, so we sell fun, Florida-based items, too. We have cedar soap dishes with our logo, sponges and beautiful seashells. We aim to bring in the coastal lifestyle that we embody. What’s your personal favorite product? The Muscle Stick. I created it as an antiinflammatory, topical pain relief alternative. It’s like Bengay or IcyHot, but it’s made with eucalyptus, menthol and black pepper. It’s also in a push-up tube and smells like the eucalyptus rather than the menthol. What’s your secret for great skin? Honestly, it’s using as few ingredients as possible and keeping my skin clean. Less is better. I’ll use shea butter, cocoa butter, lavender oil and geranium oil. You don’t need a lot of ingredients. We see the media telling us to use anti-aging products, but I think we should embrace aging. It reflects maturity and a life well-lived. You should let your own beauty radiate. When traveling, what are your skin-care essentials? I always take our Normal Formula Face Oil. It’s a small bottle, so it’s TSA-friendly; and you can use it all over your body and in your hair… Just a few drops go a long way. It’s a great multipurpose oil. What is your favorite hidden gem in Naples that visitors should check out? One of my favorite restaurants is Grouper & Chips, right across from NCH Downtown Naples Hospital. It’s teeny tiny, but the staff is incredible, and the food is amazing.

Ty Ernst Owner, T-Michaels Steak & Lobster House

Not everyone is as lucky as Ty Ernst. While some teenagers are still figuring out what they want to be when they grow up, Ernst discovered his passion for the restaurant business while he was still in high school. “I became interested in the business, and I realized back then that I enjoyed the challenge of creating great meals and great dining experiences for people,” says Ernst. After opening restaurants in Fort Lauderdale, Ernst was looking to open another in the Naples area. He found an unbelievable location — and that’s when T-Michaels opened in July 2013. Today, T-Michaels has become one of the best steak houses in southwest Florida, serving prime steaks and fresh seafood every night with beautiful waterfront views of the Venetian Bay. The father of two — who is engaged to Tai Rambert, the former Ms. Florida US Continental — is a constant presence in the restaurant. “I’m usually standing at the door to meet and greet you. I want to ensure everything is superb during your experience,” says Ernst. “I visit every table. This is the T-Michaels experience!” What’s your favorite dish on the menu? My favorite dish on the menu is the bone-in rib eye. Most of our customers say it’s the best they’ve ever had. Can you share a couple of memorable moments in your career? We’ve had the privilege of having Governor Rick Scott in the restaurant and many celebrities. But nothing beats the happy faces, warm hugs, stories of our American history and the camaraderie I witness every Veterans Day when we feed every vet for free. That will always be at the top of my list. Who has been your greatest source of inspiration? My father, who lived every day with endless energy, took great take care of his family and defended his country with honor. What is your favorite local hangout? I enjoy going to Kilwins on Fifth Avenue. On my days off, I indulge in some of the best chocolate-covered strawberries around while sitting outside on the patio. Great place and great people. What would most people be surprised to learn about you? That I was born in Okinawa, Japan, while my father served in the Air Force, and I was named after a typhoon that came over the island when I was born.

When most people visit Naples, they think adrenaline-charged watersports, awardwinning beaches or grabbing tee time in the “Golf Capital of the World.” Craft beer is perhaps the last thing that comes to mind. Surprisingly enough, the craft beer scene has been on an upswing in this beautiful city along Florida’s Gulf Coast. Picking up some steam in recent years as one of the fastestgrowing regions in the United States, the area has seen a net increase of more than 20 breweries since 2015. Several local breweries, area bars and restaurants and two annual craft beer festivals are doing their part to meet the evolving need for locally produced craft beer in the region. Fancy a pint or two? Head to these amazing spots to experience the best craft beer Naples has to offer. Riptide Brewing Company in Naples Design District is the product of three great friends with a love of beer and beer brewing! From 10- to 20-gallon batches in their garage to a 10-barrel, 310-gallon custom brewhouse in the downtown area, Riptide offers a well-rounded selection of their own brews, plus selections on guest taps from other local brewers like Momentum Brewing in Bonita Springs. In a single afternoon, more than 25 craft beers from six Florida breweries were paired with more than 20 food samples from notable Marco Island restaurants like Mango’s Dockside Bistro, Sandbar and CJ’s on the Bay. Enjoy award-winning entrees, brick oven pizza, signature cocktails and live music, with over 50 craft beer selections on tap at South Street. Weekend brunch — we love it because it gives us permission to indulge in sleeping in, having breakfast and lunch in one sitting and enjoying a morning cocktail, usually a mimosa or Bloody Mary. At Naples Grande Beach Resort, Saturdays and Sundays at Aura Restaurant does Bloody Marys in the most lavish way possible: Its Bloody Mary bar features 45 garnishes (from shrimp to mini grilled cheese), plus spicy sauces and rimmers with which guests can individualize its house-made, tomato-based mix. Throughout town, restaurants offer crafty cocktails, special menus, sumptuous buffets and jazz accompaniment to further customize your weekend brunch. For the Bloody Mary bar at Burntwood Tavern’s Saturday and Sunday brunch, the house infuses a number of vodkas with flavors such as pickle, bacon and jalapeñogarlic. Mimosas come in three fruit flavors to accompany its a la carte selections — from chicken biscuits to prime rib Benedict. Ridgway Bar & Grill also serves brunch on both Saturdays and Sundays. Start with a Bloody Bull (spicy and splashed with beef au jus) or Sukie’s Sassy Sangria. Small plates include brioche doughnuts served with chocolate hazelnut and raspberry sauces and grilled melon and ginger soup. Entrees satisfy egg urges with offerings from a ratatouille and homemade ricotta omelet to pork belly and asparagus Benedict.

Timeless — An MHK Eatery opens for brunch on both weekend days, too. Favorites include coal-fired frittatas, breakfast burritos, salmon Benedict, red flannel brisket hash and breakfast pizza with spinach pesto, cage-free eggs, bacon lardoons and smoked tomato hollandaise. If you like your brunch with a French accent, head to La Bazenne on Fifth on Sundays for croissant Benedicts, homemade sweet-and-savory crepes and two-fer Bazenne Royals. The sidewalk café’s bend on mimosas, the latter harmonize sparkling French wine, vermouth and strawberries. The a la carte brunch at Lamoraga is seasonal, from Thanksgiving weekend to Mother’s Day. Spanish-inspired, its version of mimosa blends cava and lychee puree. Try the El Gaucho — eggs, chorizo and bacon with grilled jalapeño-infused cornbread. Want a side of music with your brunch? A couple of local restaurants jazz up their Sundays with live music. Although known for its near-constant sunshine, Naples also boasts a bright afterdark scene of sophisticated lounges, music clubs and beachside barefoot bar-hopping. Mantra at Naples Grande Beach Resort is the place to see and be seen in this town. Nosh on appetizers, then buy a fine Davidoff cigar to take outside and savor around the fire feature along with an after-dinner cognac. If you are looking for some local action, you are in the right place. Naples Grande is located in the heart of the burgeoning North Naples nightlife scene. Mercato shopping and entertainment center drives that scene with a wide selection of establishments that serve food and drink, and often have live music into the wee hours. From an Irish pub (The Pub) and cigar bar (BURN by Rocky Patel) to a wine bar

(The Wine Loft of Naples), martini bar (Blue Martini), gastropub (Cavo Lounge) and luxury movie theater (Silverspot Cinema), Mercato appeals to everyone’s taste in party time. Blue Martini is arguably the hottest party spot at Mercato, with live music early in the evening and a late-night DJ. BURN by Rocky Patel is a luxe lounge purveying fine cigars and high-end spirits in a stylish space with an outdoor patio area. Hip Cavo Lounge invites you to kick up your heels on the dance floor or kick back on its comfy couches. Also in the North Naples area, Off the Hook Comedy Club brings the laughs, and South Street hosts live entertainment in an edgy, urban setting. Head to the Blue Monkey Bar & Grill for live music or Pelican Larry’s Raw Bar and Grill to catch the game. Or don your finest duds and party shoes to head downtown to Olde Naples, where the scene runs glam to casual at

Naples is a mecca for artists, and it’s easy to see why. In this city flanked by the wild green Everglades and the sparkling Gulf of Mexico, Mother Nature is a constant muse. But there’s more to the Naples art scene than landscapes lauding sun, sand and sea. Visionaries like the ones you’re about to meet are showing us the world in bold new ways. Tracy Negoshian Sea horses splashing through beds of coral. Bold patterns like tangled mangroves. Bright colors culled from the Everglades. Her company, Tracy Negoshian Inc., began as a flagship store in Naples. Since then, the TN brand has expanded nationwide and throughout the Caribbean, offering styles for women ages 18 to 80. TN styles are designed with all women in mind, with prices that don’t break the bank. Over the years, the brand has gained a popularity and loyalty that still amazes Negoshian. “Even after all these years, I still get butterflies when I see ladies in TN. It’s an honor that of all the choices they have to fill their closets, they chose to purchase and wear something that our TN team spent hours designing and perfecting.” With a degree in marketing from the University of South Florida, Negoshian began her career at Saks Fifth Avenue with an elite clientele in the Palm Beach area. Her goal, she says, is to help women feel confident about themselves. She attributes much of her own confidence to support from her family. From her stepfather and business partner, Tom, to her “momager,” Linda, and her younger siblings Megan and Todd, Negoshian’s tribe is woven tightly in the fabric of her enterprise. Her newest endeavor — inviting women to market her fashions at “parties” they host from home — draws inspiration, she says, from her life with husband David and their children, Cooper and Ellery. “It’s the work-life-family balance that so many are seeking,” Negoshian says. “They set goals and work at a pace that is comfortable for their lifestyle. Our TN Stylist program offers one of the most rewarding compensation packages in the direct-sales marketplace.”

Ed & Marti Koehler At first it might seem that these married artists couldn’t be more different. He’s a selftaught sculptor. She’s a classically trained painter. But here’s what makes this duo dynamic. Both native Floridians are more than comfortable coloring outside the lines that confine our concept of traditional art. Michelangelo transformed marble into masterpieces. Ed Koehler coaxes metals and epoxies into sconces, floor lamps and more. What gives Koehler’s organic sculptures standout appeal is the craftsman’s penchant for mixing media — from fiberglass and mosaics to steel and aluminum. “No one does what I do in my particular style,” says Koehler, and that’s putting it lightly. Picture a towering horseshoe crab fashioned from fiberglass, or a steel wall sconce posing as a driftwood branch. Nature, as you might rightly suspect, provides all of Koehler’s inspiration. Florida’s vivid colors, above and below the water, impressed the boy from Big Pine Key in the Florida Keys, who worked at a variety of jobs before

following his passion for art. Wife Marti Koehler followed a more traditional path. She studied in New Orleans, Tallahassee and New York City as she sought ways to break down and reimagine the colors, shapes and textures of her natural surroundings. “I’m trying to push the limits of certain themes already done by other artists, like beaches or figures,” she says. “I try and push the concepts to a different direction, and I try to use a variety of mixed materials to make that happen.” In a new series of paintings, for example, she explores the geometry of synchronized swimmers. The swimmers appear to be positioned perfectly, but what else is going on? “It feels like it could be a representation of two different ways of thinking — poised on the outside with something churning under the surface.”

Naples is home to the largest concentration of working studios and

Dennis Goodman He took a “leap of faith” the day he left his property management company to begin a career capturing images of South Florida’s vibrant wildlife. But Dennis Goodman needed more than faith to pave his road to success. He needed patience and determination. “It wasn’t easy making money off photos, so I would work for someone in the evenings and go to art shows on the weekends,” Goodman recalls. He kept at it, “with my wife and kids supporting me,” and eventually he was able to open his own office and work full time as a photographer. Goodman grew up in Minnesota and moved to Naples in 1985. Like Ed Koehler, he is largely self-taught. He attributes his success to his ability to “understand” the scenes around him. “See the light,” he advises new photographers. “Look at the background and have a unique sense of feeling before you take the photo. Then you will show the true character of the subject.” The driving force behind Goodman’s nature-based photography is his passion for

the environment. He has teamed up with local groups and conservancies like the National Audubon Society to promote environmental conservation. He hopes, he says, that through his work people will see nature in a new way. Goodman loves what he does and has established a name for himself. His work has been featured just about anywhere you can imagine — from South Florida magazine covers and art exhibits to hotels and golf clubs. He tells aspiring photographers, “It takes persistence and, most importantly, patience. I never thought I’d make this kind of living or have a space or do these things. Anybody can put their mind to whatever they choose to do.”

residences in Park Shore are set on the shores of picturesque Venetian Bay. To the west, the high-rises on Park Shore combine with green spaces and a 1.25-mile beachfront promenade to offer one of the most sought-after settings in the world. The lushly landscaped Pelican Bay community includes a mix of single-family homes, mid-rise condominiums and luxury highrises that line a mangrove forest and overlook the Gulf. Residents enjoy a private golf course and two private beaches, each of which features a waterfront restaurant and beverage service. Nestled within a pristine natural setting just minutes from downtown Naples, The Isles of Collier Preserve features a colorful update of classic coastal living. Inspired by the timeless architecture and traditions of Olde Naples, homes overlook miles of scenic kayak and hiking trails. With more than half of the 2,400 acres dedicated to lakes, nature preserves and natural habitat, combined with outdoor-inspired amenities, The Isles of Collier Preserve is an extraordinary new community where the magic of Olde Naples and unspoiled nature still coexist. The Isles is a master-planned community boasting 1,600 unique coastal-themed newconstruction residences, with stunning water and nature views, including luxury villas, single-family and coach homes. Continuing south, just off of Collier Boulevard on your way to Marco Island, Fiddler’s Creek is a private, master-planned, residential community offering unsurpassed elegance amongst a tropical setting. With a very low-density level of 1.6 Florida golf course homes for sale per gross acre, the plan anticipates nearly 100 distinct neighborhoods upon completion. Committed to preserving the environment, Fiddler’s Creek is being planned to accommodate and enhance the natural beauty of Florida. Less than one-third of Fiddler’s Creek will be developed for residential use, while the remainder of the land is dedicated primarily to nature reserves, lakes, parks, golf courses and recreational areas. Amenities offered at Fiddler’s Creek include a 54,000-squarefoot club and spa, fitness center, resort-style multi-pool swimming complex, tennis courts, restaurants and the opportunity to join The Golf Club and The Tarpon Club. There are more than 70 championship golf courses in Collier County, the majority of which are in private, gated country-club communities. At the top of the list is Quail West in North Naples. Acknowledged for their stunning beauty, Quail West’s Preserve and Lakes courses weave through grand estate, single-family and villa neighborhoods. The stunning 70,000-square-foot clubhouse complex includes formal dining, enlarged and redesigned pre-function spaces, an amazing 12,000-square-foot dedicated fitness and wellness building, a full-service salon and spa, a glassenclosed indoor heated pool and lighted Har-Tru tennis courts. Current renovations are transforming the lower floor of the clubhouse. The lower floor will soon provide more casual spaces that tie in the traditional elements of the club with a more relaxed casual atmosphere, including golf, fitness, tennis, the salon and spa, and casual dining. Whatever your tastes, whatever your lifestyle, your piece of paradise awaits in Naples.
