Memories of creole meals on beachfront restaurants of Deshaies in Guadeloupe caught me off guard with their explosion of zesty flavours; a meal at a restaurant in Puerto Rico’s colonial zone had me calling for the chef to share his secret ingredients; seafood dishes on Bonaire’s promenade would win gold at any international food fair; and Jamaican peppery jerked meats enjoyed from road side eateries is a celebration of the art d’vivre of that nation’s first people — the Taino.

Half-Board Charters Half-Board Charters are a great way to combine an all-inclusive crewed yacht charter with a chance to experience local culture and island cuisine. These are so named because half of your meals are provided on board giving guests an opportunity to dine ashore. In most cases, boats give discounts for a half-board and provide all breakfasts, 4 lunches and 3 dinners. Discounts are commonly only applicable for 7-night charters.

Captain-Only Charters For guests looking for a more hands-on approach to their yachting experience, Captain-Only charters are a great option. Bareboat Charters For those travellers who are already experienced sailors, a bareboat charter puts all the control in your hands. A special report by a Financial Times publication investigated and noted an emerging, niche phenomenon of “growing wealth and the tendency for high net worth individuals to become more globally minded”. This takes various forms, but when those investors originate from countries whose track record for stability is not one for the books, unless for all the wrong reasons, their priority is to seek certainty for tomorrow, rooted in the rule of law. For the more knowledgeable, the intelligent solution is citizenship by investment, commonly abbreviated to “CBI”.

n August (2019), the Financial Times’ Professional Wealth Management (PWM) published its newest edition of the CBI Index. The special report, issued annually, ranks all citizenship by investment programmes in the world against seven pillars considered most important to investors seeking second citizenship. This year, the independent study found that Caribbean countries filled the top five positions, ahead of EU member states like Austria, Malta or Cyprus. But why exactly is it that investors are confidently choosing Caribbean programmes over European ones?

1. The Commonwealth of Dominica

or the third consecutive year, FT experts awarded the Commonwealth of Dominica in the Eastern Caribbean the number one position in the CBI Index, scoring it with full marks in five pillars. “Dominica emerged once more as the country with the world’s best citizenship by investment programme, combining extensive due diligence with efficiency, speed, affordability, and reliability”,

Notably, the reputable CBI Programme is credited for significantly supporting Dominica’s feat to become “the world’s first climate-resilient nation”, as pledged

by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

2. St. Kitts and Nevis

he surprise this year was industry newcomer St Lucia, who climbed to fourth place within only three years of activity and moved one position higher compared to 2018. It achieved this by “improving its scores for freedom of movement, citizenship timeline, and due diligence”. St Lucia’s Citizenship by Investment Programme offers a more diverse choice of routes, currently counting four.

Honouring excellence in culture and development

atrick Chamoiseau of Martinique, for example, is a writer who is often compared with seminal authors like Frantz Fanon and Louis-Ferdinand Céline. His historical and literary works narrate the blending of African, Asian, indigenous, and colonising European cultures among the Caribbean’s isolated islands and explore what it means to be from the Caribbean. A leader in what became known as the Creolite movement, Chamoiseau was not well known outside the Francophone world when his innovative writing to address issues of Caribbean identity caught the eye of the Prince Claus Awards Committee. He was given a Prince Claus Award in 1999 for his commitment ‘to the Caribbean society of which he is part [that] goes further than his literary work.’

Caribbean culture is known for its joyous rituals, and none is more boisterous than the annual carnival parade. The man most responsible for raising carnival celebrations to a form of high art is Peter Minshall from Trinidad and Tobago: Artist, artistic director, theatre designer, and creator of Olympic ceremony spectacles in Barcelona, Atlanta, and Salt Lake City.

The Prince Claus Award in 2001 recognised Carnival as ‘an expression of culture….in which the whole community takes part in a cultural release of suppressed dreams’. The Awards Committee went on to say that ‘Carnivals are natural cradles for new design talents. The artist Peter Minshall personifies this kind of innovation,’ and praised ‘the artistic excellence of his massive public performances that bring joy and pride to so many people.’

Creating spaces for expression

hat is the Caribbean without Calypso?

Hollis Liverpool, a.k.a. Chalkdust, has been performing Calypso since the 1960s and has won Trinidad’s Calypso Monarch competition no fewer than nine times. He says his satirical and critical lyrics are meant to uplift society and give people a sense of purpose. But Liverpool is more than just an accomplished entertainer, he is a teacher and cultural historian with a PhD in History and Ethnomusicology. He served as Director of Culture in the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Culture from 1993-1999. He founded and was first Director of the Carnival Institute and has published numerous articles and books on Caribbean culture and history. Tania Bruguera has become world renowned as an installation and performance artist. In 2002 she founded the Cátedra Arte de Conducta (Behaviour Art School) in Havana, Cuba. It was the first performance studies programme in Latin America and was the first to provide training in alternative art studies for contemporary Cuban society. Her own art deals with concepts such as restraint, abuse, migration and freedom and she often uses the human body in powerfully evocative performance art. She was honoured with the Prince Claus Award in 2008. Subsequently she developed her concept of ‘Artivism’ combining art with activism, and established INSTAR, the Instituto de Artivismo Hannah Arendt, or Hannah Arendt Institute for Artivism.

Supporting culture and heritage in many forms

P

rince Claus Awards highlight artistic range and excellence, but they are not the only way the Fund supports Caribbean cultural expression. The Caribbean has produced remarkable, internationally known writers, many of whom predate the Internet age. Pree is a Jamaican based online literary magazine that

showcases Caribbean writing. The Prince Claus Fund is currently supporting Pree in a project to engage young writers.

A call for proposals on the topics gender roles and climate change has yielded a selection of promising young writers whose works will fill two issues of Pree. Five of the writers will be invited to attend an intensive creative writing workshop at the Calabash Literary Festival. Recognising that there is ‘a value for young writers in seeing their work taken seriously enough to be produced in book form’, Pree will also publish a print edition that profiles the best writing.

The region has a rich history and diverse heritage. But threats from natural disasters are an increasing concern for cultural organisations throughout Central America and the Caribbean. In Guatemala, a small museum, Casa K’ojom, is an audio-visual and documentation centre on indigenous musical heritage. The director, Samuel Franco Arce, has rescued his museum twice from serious flooding and he is now committed to helping preserve heritage under threat throughout Central America. After attending Prince Claus Fund sponsored courses on heritage protection, rescue and leadership, and with the Fund’s support, Franco Arce has established a resource centre for heritage rescue at Casa K’ojom. He regularly organises courses in heritage rescue. His Guatemalan ‘heritage hub’ houses tools and expertise to assess risks and damages for all kinds of cultural heritage and is now equipped to respond quickly when disaster strikes. With global warming increasing the incidence of storms, flash floods, and lightening-induced fires, his expertise is sure to be crucial in saving countless vulnerable heritage sites and irreplaceable heritage items in the future.

The Prince Claus Award was created to honour the life of Prince Claus of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, consort to the former Dutch Queen Beatrix. Through the Prince Claus Fund, based in Amsterdam, a diverse range of initiatives support programmes to preserve cultures across the globe.

Prince Claus’ interest in solving the problems of poor countries and to positively impact the lives of its people was his lifelong passion. Born 6 September 1926, the Prince died on 6 October 2002. Even for those not arriving here by sea, there remains a strong nautical engagement within Gustavia through these and other regattas, which have built-out racing villages where sailors gather before and apres racing each day, in addition to the opening ceremony, daily awards, and closing ceremony. More than 1,000 participants are on site for this sailing spectacle each year.

On the cultural side, there are celebrations in every medium around town throughout the year – for instance, the the 2019 St. Barths Film Festival (stbarthff.org) presenting current Caribbean and international film, which included an opening night soirée along the Gustavia harbour-front and a closing night event at the casual chic Le Repaire restaurant (rue de la République). During the winter and summer months, music fans can take advantage of over a week of live performances at the St. Barths Music Festival (www.stbartsmusicfestival.org), held in January and featuring live performances in informal settings by internationally prominent musical and dance artists in both classical and contemporary genres. Also noteworthy for its exhibits of the visual arts spanning photography, sculpture, and painting is the spring and summer one-night Artists of St. Barth Art Party featuring pop-up parties dedicated to local artists, with some events hosted in-town at the Musée Territorial (https://artistsofstbarth.org).

Of course, as elsewhere across the Caribbean, island spirit and tradition expresses its core identity on St. Barths with the annual appearance of mardi gras and carnival. Each March, the streets of Gustavia are energised with the a colourful parade, live music, decorated faces, and fun costumes with celebrations continuing through the night.

This is all followed the next day on Ash Wednesday, when an effigy of Vaval, the Carnival King, is burned in a large bonfire on Shell Beach, a short walk from the harbour, all with more music and drumming.

Fashion adventure — Global to local haute couture and design lthough it is always easy to explore Gustavia’s avenues in a random way for the town’s fashion and style panorama, you can also plan in advance on some avenue-specific locations that offer the most extensive presence — specifically, rue de la République, rue du Roi Oscar II, and the rue du Général de Gaulle. Along with these key avenues for fashion are very walkable multi-level outdoor retail structures such as Carré d’Or Plaza.

For those with sufficient time to explore and pause further, many of the side and connecting streets of downtown are also home to some fine boutiques and markets carrying both European and local couture and accessories. So for instance, while many of the legends of French and other European haute couture and jewellery have a boutique presence at Gustavia’s main shopping hotspots — such as Hermès and Bulgari on rue de la République, or American legendary fashion names by way of Ralph Lauren at their Carré d’Or storefront — the diligent design hunter will also make time to stop in along nearby streets that are

Also noteworthy in catering for the finest in resort, sports, and casual styles from both European and islandbased designers are other area shops such as Poupette St. Barth, Marina St. Barth, Linde Gallery, Mademoiselle Hortense, La Chemise Tropezienne, Lolita Jaca, Victoire, and Vanita Rosa. For distinctive jewellery and high-end accessories, store names to watch for here include Laurent Effel and Fabienne Miot. Summer sales on the island take place between August 6-18, during the St. Barts Shopping Festival where promotions, sales, and fairs are held in various shops including many within Gustavia.

Dining and beverage diversity — Gallic to cosmopolitan or island-style n between savouring the varied dimensions of Gustavia in high-end shopping, exhibitions or festivals, time spent in the St. Barths capital is always even finer for the interludes of indulging in the equally outstanding range of culinary and bar and bistro fare to be found across the town and along its waterfront. In fact, from small traditional eateries to temples of gastronomy, there are over 80 in total islandwide to sample from, and many within Gustavia. St Barts’ cuisine has strong French and Italian influences and awardwinning chefs artfully blend seductive French-style cuisine and Caribbean informality to the highest culinary standards.

While new names in local fine cuisine emerge frequently to look out for on any visit, others have become an established fixture on the culinary scene within Gustavia. In this enduring category, and for those who particularly appreciate the waterfront ambiance with a view to be accessed hereabouts, there is the reliable

excellence of the Bagatelle St. Barth for its terrace dining, or the brasserie-style experience to be had at Le Repaire. At a higher price range but worth every penny is the Gallic fare to be had at Maya's overlooking the harbour, where fresh local seafood and local vegetables are specialties. In November (2019) the island kicked off its Winter season by hosting the Caribbean Rum Festival in a week of culinary and rum pairing celebrations with the island’s R St Barth “Authentique” winning double gold in the Hors d’age Rhum Agricole category.

Of course, another way to experience the diversity of cuisine is to be here for the fare from elegant to casual but always done to perfection and served at many of the intown festivals. Aside from the delicious ambiance to be had at harbour-front dining spots, the outdoor or indoor bistros and small dining spots that pop up along the pedestrian-friendly streets or shopping hubs such as Le Carré d'Or offer their own dining experience with an outward view of the elegant street facades.

Historic and contemporary canvas — from streetside to harbour’s edge ust as integral to Gustavia's character as its commercial and festive aspects are its own historic and local landmarks. Easy to access and intriguing to view is the harbour-front Le Musée Territorial de Saint Barthélemy the Territorial Museum, (www.comstbarth.fr/musee_territorial.aspx) located on La Pointe, next to the Hôtel de la Collectivité. This well weathered edifice dates back to 1785 and houses artefacts that reveal the island’s traditional heritage. In recent years, the museum has reached out to a wider public by dedicating two of its rooms to contemporary art, with a non-profit association organising exhibits by modern painters which run from December through April.

Ultimately, the most meaningful engagement with Gustavia today comes through the visitor’s own individual collection of experiences in all the town’s dimensions. That individual experience here is accessed within Gustavia's historic or architectural context, together with its exterior urban profusion of natural vegetation, from tall palm to lower-lying ferns and evergreen shrubs, which all combine with the man-made structure of street facade and nearby waterfront to produce the wider ambiance for that distinct encounter at any time. The canvas of human and natural together with the sumptuous choices on hand – be it in design and the arts or in nautical sport and culinary finesse – all contribute to the visitor’s own time here that becomes their vivid Gustavia memory. n JP-N31

ictoria Wilmotte’s signature is crafted on porcelain with a collection highlighting the art of design. In the form of a mug or a carafe, the French designer facets porcelain as she wishes for an ever more surprising meeting of the design universe and Limoges’ know-how. Her collection invites a warm contrast between Anglo-Saxon and French culture, recalling its path. Imagined at the end of her studies, Victoria Wilmotte decides to create her favourite project with the famous porcelain Manufacturer. “Rigourous lines and sobriety”, such are the master words of the designer for this delicate and full of subtlety collection.

According to Victoria... “This project of a mug and carafe is the functional design of a research project carried out in London for my diploma, of which three sculptural carafes inspired by industrial containers took place. It is a formal work starting from elevation drawings and materials and cavities interweaving, an abstract work in two dimensions of which the third dimension is revealed through the object’s function.”

Haviland’s Manufacturer and the designer Christian Ghion decided to participate for the first time on a project transcending heaven and earth, placed under the design sign. Haviland and the designer pushes the material’s limits to create two contemporary vases with wild lines. “Wind” consists of two vases of 20 and 40cm in biscuit, claiming their unique styles. Stretching, modelling, engraving, carving, the designers have fun with materials and invite us to a continually surprising interpretation through collaborations.

to surprise and seduce. These pieces go beyond their elementary function and present a true sculptural work of art”.

From its unprecedented collaboration with the architect and designer Jean-Michel Wilmotte and Jean and Simone Lurçat Foundation, the Lurçat collection by Wilmotte marks more than 50 years after the “Hommage” collection, the great return of Jean Lurçat at Haviland .

Internationally renowned painter, tapestry painter, poet, illustrator and ceramist, French Beaux-Arts Academy member, Jean Lurçat marked his century with a work of extraordinary richness. A production of which Jean-Michel Wilmotte, academician too, wanted to imitate and adapt, with Haviland, some of his favourite pieces through what was one of the great passions of this multi-talented artist: ceramics. Painter at the beginning, the creator originally from the Vosges was indeed passionate about the ceramics techniques, especially faience, thanks to which he will deepen his experiment by testing new patterns or new colour combinations.

After having designed the 2016 exhibition-event Galerie des Gobelins dedicated to Jean Lurçat, Jean-Michel Wilmotte pays tribute to him again by imagining, around the artist’s themes of predilection (roosters, leaves, profiles, and stars), a service of 4 dessert plates and 4 delicacies plates. A limited and signed edition for which the architect has chosen to reproduce in shiny white and black, with blue, yellow, and red touches, drawings from Lurçat’s famous earthenware or tapestries.

The Ocean Club is old world Bahamian charm, where long serving staff members imbued with social graces and etiquette, extend gracious service, making for a memorable stay with their attention to the smallest of details.

A

Taking the slow lane in paradise

rriving on an afternoon flight — descending over azure waters — I set my sights on the spa where I checked into its reception, and slipped on a robe and sipped hibiscus tea, while completing my information sheet with the Wellness staff who would recommend my treatment ritual.

Set in a Balinese themed villa with its lush tropical garden, I began my Bahamas Rhythm massage to melt my stress and tension away, followed by an aromatic stone therapy for balance and harmony, with my therapist combining stretching, long palm strokes and thumb pressure techniques.

Returning to my ocean facing suite, I opened my sliding doors to the veranda, to watch the fading sun light with its golden hue, while viewing a flock of terns skimming the rippling waters to feast on fish and small mollusks found in abundance in this shallow crescent bay.

That evening I would join a Bahamian cooking class to learn how to prepare an island favourite — conch.

Heading to downtown Nassau joining a group of hotel guests, we visited Goombay House, where a team of cooking instructors led us through simple steps to tenderise, season, and cook conch, along with veggies, root tubers, with guava to make tarts for dessert. Aprons off, we all sat on benches around long tables to enjoy the local fare we just prepared, and made recipe notes to try our new found culinary skills back at home.

In the morning I headed to the Ocean Club Golf Course with some of my new found friends from dining out the night before. On this stunningly beautiful designed Tom Weiskopf 18-hole course, the cross winds challenged our every stroke against the morning sunshine reflection off the sea beyond the coastline bordering the course. Having worked up a hearty appetite, we had a late breakfast at the Clubhouse, then browsed for memorabilia at the pro shop before returning to the hotel.

A journey through history, art, and culture

W

alking through the lobby of the hotel in the daylight, I saw a selection of celebrity pictures who had visited the Bahamas over the years to include, world politicians, business tycoons, and Queen Elizabeth II. In contrast to this legacy, hung on the walls, were 3-dimensional nouveau paintings which transformed the lobby into a magical setting with their expressions of ‘love’, ‘carpe diem’, ‘home’, and other heart-warming phrases. I learnt these pieces were by the hotel’s artist in residence Jane Waterous, who lives in the Ocean Club Residences. She often hosts hotel guests at her residence to discuss, view, and collect pieces from her selection of paintings, all inspired by the beauty of the islands of the Bahamas.

From the lobby I headed to the Versailles Gardens, a picturesque venue for weddings with its beautiful setting of flowering terraced gardens and fountains, making for a fairytale setting. Passing statues of Cupid and Psyche from classic mythology, to include the modern day explorer and missionary David Livingstone, I made my way up to the cloisters at the apex of the gardens. From this vantage point there were arresting views of the multi-tiered landscape on one side, and on the other, the 12th century marble cloisters with it intricate carvings, an ideal place to pause, reflect, and relax.

A Taste of island paradise

No Caribbean adventure is complete without tasting the island’s rum. Heading to downtown Nassau I visited the historic 1789 Buena Vista Estate and Museum home of JOHN WATLING’S Rum, known as “the spirit of the Bahamas”. Set on more than two acres of lush tropical

gardens with centenary black olive trees, Buena Vista Estate has been part of the history of Nassau, New Providence, and The Bahamas since 1789. Touring the distillery I learnt the rum is named after a famous 17th century buccaneer nicknamed the Pious Pirate known for his religious beliefs.

With 4 types of rum – Pale, Amber, Buena Vista, and Single Barrel – the latter aged for 4 years is full bodied and exceptionally smooth and much loved by the many tourists who regularly visit the Estate.

Tonight would be fine dining at the Ocean Club’s Dune Restaurant with celebrated Michelin-starred Chef JeanGeorges Vongertichten that specialises in seafood. Perched atop a white sand bluff, it offers dramatic ocean views and serves an innovative blend of French-Asian fare. Its British Colonial design was created by famed interior designer Jeffrey Beers, and features a display kitchen and outdoor patios overlooking the beach.

Joining my golfing friends at the adjacent Dune bar for pre-dinner Bahamian cocktails, we rocked to a live band entertaining us with Harry Belafonte favourites to include the song – My Island in the Sun. Dinner that evening started with a superb yellowfin tuna tartare with yuzu mustard sauce, and shaved fennel, followed by a main course of strawberry grouper in lemon-turmeric emulsion, slowly roasted carrots and tarragon, topped off with a refreshing passion fruit sorbet dessert. All enjoyed with excellent wines paired by the resident sommelier.

For blissful escapes filled with cheerful memories, The Ocean Club is a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation, with an abundance of activities to choose from just a few minutes’ drive away. CULTURE AND THE CARIBBEAN CONNECTION

Peranakan is a Malay word meaning descendants, or locally born. Peranakan cuisine, costumes, customs, artistic tiles, language, in fact all aspects of Peranakan heritage are increasingly written and spoken of around the world, but how many of us actually know anything about the culture? Legends say Sultan Mansur Shah, the reigning Sultan of Malacca (the historical state of Malaysia) from 1459-1477, visited China to pay allegiance to the Ming Dynasty Emperor and not only did the Emperor give him a Princess but an entourage of 500 followed her back to Malacca where they settled on Bukit Cina, or Chinese Hill, and eventually intermarried with Malay and Indonesian people.

European histories note simply that from the 15th century Hokkein-speaking Chinese from the southeastern Province of Fujian migrated to what had become the thriving trading post of Melaka in the straits between the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian island of Sumatra, a crucial waterway linking the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Today Malacca is the third smallest state in Malaysia but historically significant. In fact, Malacca was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2008 and people born in this area surrounding the straits of Malacca are called Peranakan.

One of these descendants,

harles KK Chua, an architect and sixth generation Peranakan, carefully preserved as much of his heritage as possible using weddings, that key ingredient holding Oriental families together, as the focus of his research. Six months after his death in December 2018 his family, with Institut Terjemahan & Buku Malaysia Berhad, published his book Baba Nyonya Heritage: Peranakan Weddings from a Malaccan Perspective.

This gorgeous coffee-table size book of 170 pages with 185 photographs captures the grandeur of decades past. It includes photographs of the author’s parents’ wedding which took place in 1910, and that of his own in 1965, as well as photographs of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and Lord Mountbatten when portions of that wedding were re-created for them on their visit in 1972. Make no mistake, this book is an historic document prepared by Baba Chua “to ensure that future generations will continue to live up to the proverb ‘Biar mati anak, jangan mati adat, (Our cultural identity is more precious than our flesh and blood.)”

All is not beauty depicted in seven chapters. One is devoted to the Japanese occupation from 1942 – 1945. The author writes: “I was about 10 years old when the war broke out. Our life changed overnight.”

Many of the British Government administrators and expatriates abandoned their posts and headed for Singapore. He remembers the air raid on 10 January 1942 that destroyed a bridge close to his family home on Jonker Street, cracking the glass windows and leaving bodies rotting. Malacca fell to the Japanese five days later and he remembers the gruesome sight of a severed head placed in a roundabout as a warning to all who did not bow to the Kempeitai or Japanese Military Police. He remembers the Meng Seng Charitable Building used as an interrogation and torture centre, the burying of hundreds alive in a well, and the war tax imposed on property owners irrevocably changing their way of life.

He writes: “the people who survived the occupation — they became a realistic, frugal and self-reliant generation.

The war had a great impact on me, even as a child.

Not only did I learn to make do with whatever little was available and adapt to extreme circumstances, I also became aware of the value and sanctity of life at a very young age.”

erhaps his desire to document Peranakan heritage through weddings was linked to his cousin’s wedding being held the day Japanese warplanes started bombing Malacca on 10 January 1942. “Mother advised that all the ceremonies should be quickly carried out and completed that very same day. It was probably the first time ever that all twelve days’ ceremonies of a traditional Baba wedding were abridged into a single day.”

Of course, with three daughters Charles Chua learned a lot about weddings and that is what brings us to the Caribbean connection. Youngest daughter, Swee Teen wrote her dissertation on the linkages between economic growth, trade and the environment, obtaining her doctorate from Oxford University. This is where she met Jeffrey Hall, a Harvard graduate, now CEO of Jamaica Producers Group Ltd, Chairman of Scotia Group Jamaica Ltd, and Chairman of Kingston Wharves Ltd. Ironically, they met at a wedding, that of Swee’s two university friends, Rupika Delgoda, a scholar from Sri Lanka, and Nigel Clarke, a Rhodes Scholar and now The Hon. Minister of Finance in Jamaica.

Swee recounts: “I didn’t know anything about Jamaica beyond listening to Peter Tosh and Bob Marley, but so did half the world.” That changed when she was seated next to Jeffrey who had come to give a toast for his friend Nigel. “She was beautiful, and I was impressed by her smarts. I like economists,” Jeffrey recalls with a smile. They met in August 2000 and were married by May 2001, first in a registrar’s office in Oxford and then at yearend in a traditional Peranakan wedding in Malacca. Before their marriage, Jeffrey returned to see her in Oxford, she visited Jamaica and then he flew to Malaysia to meet her parents and attend her older sister’s wedding so he had some idea of what a Peranakan wedding entailed.

The traditional Baba ceremony of 12 days started with a matchmaker, horoscopes to ascertain compatibility and auspicious timing, elaborate preparations of painting, preparing a sedan chair, new furniture for the bridal chamber, and numerous rituals with names like Ang Cheng, Cheo Thau, Chim Pang, each step of the way explained and illustrated with photographs in the book. Swee credits Lim Eng Leong, active in a Buddhist society and someone she knew from her school days, with greatly assisting her father. A glossary in the back preserves not only the Peranakan language but notes the intricate symbolism of everything from food, to flowers to the page boy rolling on the bridal bed three times to ensure fertility.

Swee and Jeffrey’s truncated ceremony lasted a day with the bride staying in her parents’ ancestral home where she underwent the Cheo Thau or solemn comingof-age ritual while the Hall family used the guest house where the groom underwent the ritual. Jeffrey remembers the gong and seronee music in the procession over to the bride’s place, paying respects at the ancestors’ altar, and the special wedding altar as well as the symbolic tasting of food in the bridal chamber and the tea ceremony to represent acceptance into the families, plus paying respects to their elders. They each wore beaded shoes, white shirts, bamboo vests and over that, elaborate heavy wedding garments, family heirlooms. At least 100 guests witnessed the wedding and hundreds more attended the reception. “It’s not something that happens very often,” said Swee, “so it was as much a show as our wedding for family. My Dad’s friends, and persons interested in culture would have been invited.”

In keeping with Baba Chua’s wishes, the ancestral home on Jonkers Street is now the Malacca Heritage Centre, open to visitors who need only make an appointment to visit. Jeffrey notes: “Swee’s father devoted an incredible amount of effort, resources and time to the preservation of the family’s cultural heritage. Nobody lives in the multi-story home but it’s chocked full of antiques and heirlooms of a bygone era with everything intact, the stoves, the ways in which you’d have carried water or rice, it’s entirely as you might have wanted to see it.”

The Chua family are Buddhists and every year Swee and Jeffrey, who live in Jamaica in a house named “Jonkers,” take their two children to “visit Grandpa’s house.” They pay respects at the altar where now his photograph hangs with pictures of ancestors, then visit the family graveyards and elderly relatives.

The Centre recently had groups making appointments for a more full-blown experience than just walking around. A meal is prepared for them to dine at the tok panjang, literally a long table of marble. Swee explains that many of her generation moved to Singapore or Kuala Lumpur for better economic opportunities but her mother remains in Malacca and the family hopes to maintain the ancestral home as the Malacca Heritage Centre for at least one more generation. n JP-N31

Maintaining the maritime feel of the four-storey structure, Peter Marino has imagined the interior with wooden floors, wood-clad pillars, and metal ceilings,

The ground floor of the Maison is dedicated to women’s accessories, while the mezzanine showcases not only luggage and the Art of Travel, but also a bird’s eye panorama of the main hall. The complete collection of women’s ready-towear and accessories by Nicolas Ghesquière occupies the third floor, along with a number of products developed especially for the store’s opening, such as a mink hoody, B Blossom necklace, and sapphire Tambour watch.
