DIVING INTO HISTORY After losing the American War of Independence in 1783, and with no American ports at their disposal, Britain sought a port in the mid-Atlantic, between Halifax and the West Indies, from which it could face off America and France and also easily access its interests in the Caribbean. Bermuda’s central geographic position made it a prime choice. In 1809, enslaved people laid the first local stones that would become Royal Naval Dockyard’s foundation; and convicts from Britain followed as the next wave of labourers after emancipation. From the War of 1812 until just after World War II, Royal Naval Dockyard and the base played an integral role in strategic defence for Britain. It wasn’t until 1951 that the Royal Navy officially pulled out from Bermuda. In the first years after the Bermuda government purchased Dockyard in 1953, the area saw little use and began to fall into disrepair. But soon enough, plans were set in motion to preserve Dockyard as a public gathering ground and park.

A NEW ADDITION: CROSS ISLAND The nine-acre land mass in Dockyard’s South Basin, once a hub for the flurry of activity that came with hosting the 35th America’s Cup, is finding promise in its new purpose. Cross Island now serves as a hub for Savvy Entertainment, which hosted the Poseidon Games, a global Hydroflight competition, at the island in 2018. Also, in 2018, Savvy transformed Land Rover BAR’s former Cross Island boat shed, now dubbed The Shed, into Bermuda’s largest indoor event venue hosting large-scale events such as Syzygy, a one-night concert event featuring reggae and soca heavyweights like Bunji Garlin and Sizzla Kalonji. Savvy also rents Cross Island and The Shed to event organisers, breathing new life into the former America’s Cup home. The America’s Cup also left behind the great legacy of its Endeavour Program, which is headquartered in Dockyard. The programme provides sailing instruction as well as education on a range of related subjects and could very well lead to young Bermudians becoming world-class sailors in their own right.

Hangover scenario begins as the island’s biggest holiday ends. “Not only is this a bonding experience and a thrilling puzzle for participants to solve, but it is entirely unique because you can learn something about Bermuda at the same time, as each room is designed to showcase elements of Bermuda,” said WEDCO Marketing & Events Manager Stephanie Rodill. Another fun interactive experience at Dockyard will have you feeling like a kid again — the FryDay’s Trampoline Park, the only venue of its kind in Bermuda, is in the historic Sail Loft Building right behind Clocktower Shopping Mall. From exercise jump classes to arcade games and a custom-built piratethemed miniature bowling alley, FryDay’s offers the kind of sweet thrill that brings families together.

Royal Naval Dockyard boasts both. Vista View Virtual Tours, set to open sometime in 2019, describes the experience it will offer as a 21st-century simulated theatre and entertainment attraction offering virtual reality experiences, motion simulator games and special feature interactive rides that will promote and celebrate Bermuda’s history, attractions and culture. Locked on the Rock, Dockyard’s escape room experience, challenges groups of friends to find the clues and solve the puzzles that will allow them to escape as the clock ticks down. The Tucker’s Cross escape is based on a 50-yearold mystery, whilst the Cupmatch

ROYALTY Prince Alfred Terrace boasts views fit for any royal family.

ORIGINALLY BUILT IN THE 1840S, the terraces were

constructed as married officer quarters on what was part of a 200-acre plot on Ireland Island, which had been purchased to create Royal Naval Dockyard, a vital base for the Royal Navy until the mid-1990s. By 2016, the terraces — named after Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria’s son, who visited Bermuda whilst serving in the Royal Navy — had fallen into a state of disrepair and had sustained serious

14

| DOCK YARDBERMUDA .COM

hurricane damage, but their full potential was realised when it was announced that Bermuda would be home to the 2017 America’s Cup. A decision was made to return Prince Alfred Terrace to its former glory, and apartments were created to house The America’s Cup Operations Centre and America’s Cup Officials. Following the event, the apartments were made available for vacation rentals and have been extremely popular with visitors enjoying the opportunity to experience a rich part of Bermuda’s history. The 10 three-bedroom apartments are superbly equipped with modern kitchens and bathrooms, as well as a laundry in each apartment; but one of the best features is the incredible views they afford over the Great Sound. Wander down to the sea front and lounge in an area specifically designed to let you relax and take in the breathtaking views with a glass of wine in hand.
