Happy 50th birthday Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre!

Established in 1975 and officially opened in January 1976, the independent, non-profit hub has evolved over the decades to become the thriving centre of creativity and community we know and love today. As well as running the iconic Kirribilli Markets, the KNC co-ordinates a schedule of activities as diverse as the community it serves, with up to 40 programs running each week. From language lessons to art classes, guitar groups, Pilates, Scrabble and scones, a free lending library and so much more, the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre’s range of initiatives and special interest groups bring all ages together to learn, socialise, share skills and feel at home. The Centre also provides support to organisations such as the Ukrainian Women’s Refugee Group and Mary’s House, as well as important services including free legal and mediation advice, a Justice of the Peace and KYDS confidential counselling sessions for local young people. “We’re so proud to reach this milestone,” says KNC General Manager, Jo Harvey. “Human connection has never been more important. We hope the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre continues to offer that to the community well into the future.” l The KNC team – above, from left to right - Office Administrator Dianne McHatten, General Manager Jo Harvey and Kirribilli Markets Manager Ari Maiti - are supported by a team of volunteers.

LOCAL LEGENDS

t’s still dark when Sarah* leaves the house with her little boy. There’s no neatly packed suitcase, no time to decide what to take, what to leave behind. Clutching her son’s hand and his favourite teddy bear, they escape with almost nothing, except each other, and the hope that there will be somewhere safe to go... For northsiders like Sarah and her son who are impacted by domestic and family violence, Mary’s House Services is that safe place. Founded ten years ago by a group of locals who recognised the gap in essential support for women and children on the north shore, the charity has provided more than 20,000 safe room nights, as well as

countless hours of specialised support and wellbeing services, to help families in trauma begin building their futures. Now, as Mary’s House reaches its 10th anniversary, it will be able to save more lives with the imminent acquisition of a second refuge property in Sydney’s northern suburbs. Expected to welcome its first residents in 2027, this new property will more than double the organisation’s accommodation capacity. It will also be the only refuge in the north shore area offering self-contained apartments to provide crisis accommodation for women and children of all ages, including families with pets. Despite Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declaring domestic and family violence a national crisis, Mary’s House receives no government funding for its refuge services. Instead it continues to rely on the generosity, skills, time and commitment of individuals, businesses, philanthropists, volunteers and

Andrea Taylor, Vanessa Green, Samantha Crawford and Jenny Kent all live in McMahons Point Domestic and family violence doesn’t have a postcode. It can affect all ages, all demographics, anywhere, at any time. It’s important for us to support each other, to come together to stand up for what’s right and engender a sense of safety throughout our community. Each of us knows of people who’ve been supported by Mary’s House, from young mums through to women in their 70s and we do whatever we can to help out, from selling raffle tickets and volunteering at events to attending dinners, fundraising and spreading the word near and far to rally people to get involved.

The annual Mary’s House Walk in October is such an important event for raising awareness and we’d encourage everyone to take part. It’s a really visible way of showing that the community is behind this incredible charity. We want to give women and children hope, to show that good people are out there and that good things can happen.

“Someone helped me when I was younger and when I asked them how I’d pay them back, they told me to pay it forward instead. That’s what I’ve tried to do ever since” - Samantha Crawford

LOCAL LEGENDS community groups who refuse to look away and share the founders’ belief that everyone has the right to live free from abuse and violence. “The new refuge is a relief,” says Mary’s House Services’ CEO, Yvette Vignando. “It’s an opportunity for our team to say yes to more women and children. I’m deeply grateful to our supporters, who understand that families in trauma should be offered hope, healing and housing.” As well as providing safe accommodation, Mary’s House runs a Community Programs Centre which provides tailored services and practical pathways to independence. There’s access to pro-bono experts from a range of professional services including trauma informed counselling and safety planning, legal and financial advice, employment support and more. A specialist tech team is also available to remove trackers from mobile phones, tablets, laptops and even children’s toys. Mary’s House Services CEO, Yvette Vignando

“Domestic and family violence is one of the most significant social challenges facing Australia today,” Yvette says. “It affects people from all walks of life, regardless of age, culture, education, profession or postcode. There’s often a perception that communities like the Lower North Shore are somehow immune from it but the reality is very different. Behind closed doors, many women and children are in just as much danger, physically and psychologically, as those in other areas. Locals have increasingly understood that gap in services and want to be part of the solution.” “We don’t receive a cent from government to operate our existing refuge and refuge casework services,” she continues. “Community support is the reason why Mary’s House Services exists. It’s our origin story and will always be part of Mary’s House DNA. If it hadn’t been for those founders who decided to take a risk and start something, we wouldn’t be where we are today and so many women and children would have stayed in dangerous, damaging situations and lost their lives because support was not available. We are very proud, encouraged and motivated to be community supported and we’re not stopping here. We’re determined to provide more crisis housing for women and children in Sydney’s northern suburbs to meet the ongoing increases in demand that we’re experiencing.” That determination is echoed throughout the snapshot of the Mary’s House supporters we meet over the next few pages, from sewing quilts to fundraising, local businesses offering services, sporting teams speaking out and community members showing up. “Behind every woman who finds safety, every child who experiences stability and every family that begins to rebuild their future is a community of people who have chosen to stand alongside them,” Yvette concludes.

“The new refuge is a relief. It’s an opportunity for our team to say yes to more women and children.”

The Quilters

The Supporters General Sir Peter Cosgrove and Lady Lynne Cosgrove live in Milsons Point When we found out about Mary’s House, we thought, right, we’ll help in whatever way we can. We’re pretty enthusiastic recruits and whenever fundraisers come along we’re delighted to be invited to participate and spread the word. If you get the opportunity to contribute to Mary’s House, its upkeep and its plans, do so. You’ll be expressing some of the most marvellous Australian characteristics: rolling up your sleeves and having a generous heart. It all helps women and children reach safe shelter and receive compassionate, practical support. This goes beyond simply providing a place to stay. It’s about giving them the chance to feel that sense of safety and belonging we all need and deserve.

Carolyn Matthews is the Community Quilt Organiser for The Northbridge Quilters We’ve always had a tradition of making quilts for charity and we’ve been involved with Mary’s House for the best part of seven years now, donating around 14 quilts each year for adults, kids and for babies. I think all of us can imagine the fear of being in a situation where you need to leave your home for your own safety and the safety of your children, not knowing who to turn to or where to go. We want women and children arriving at Mary’s House to know that their community is thinking about them and for them to have something that belongs to them. They can take their quilt with them when they leave Mary’s House, too, if they wish. There are hundreds of hours of time, care and love poured into every quilt we make. We hope they feel like a big hug, something these women and children can wrap themselves in at a time when they need comfort, safety and a reminder that they are not alone.

“We want women and children arriving at Mary’s House to know that their community is thinking about them” If you or someone you know is affected by issues in this story, contact Mary’s House Services on 1800 002 111 or the NSW Domestic Violence Hotline on 1800 65 64 63. If there is an immediate safety risk, call Triple Zero.

The Founders Northwood local Emma Rossi and Roger Williams OAM from Mosman are two of the original founders of Mary’s House Services Mary’s House began with an idea that the community turned into reality. A group of us from The Parish of Our Lady of the Way in North Sydney came together and wanted to do something practical to help women and children on the north shore who were escaping domestic and family violence. We put a notice in the parish bulletin inviting locals to a meeting about starting a refuge. Almost 30 people came, bringing skills, connections and a determination to make it happen. The energy and passion we had was palpable and we put in hundreds of hours alongside our full time jobs. We were very privileged to have a group of people with expertise and connections that meant

10

we could get things moving in record time. We identified a property, negotiated a discounted lease and rallied an extraordinary network of supporters from architects and builders to businesses, community groups and individuals who all contributed their time, money and skills. Things really took off when Mary’s House was adopted by the wider community, from north shore leagues clubs and Rotary groups to locals of all religions, backgrounds and ages. As well as fundraising, people donated furniture, offered pro bono services, cooked meals and even organised birthday gifts for children in the refuge. We’re very proud of what we’ve achieved with Mary’s House, but the demand still outstrips the resources. Domestic violence is a crisis. Ongoing community support is vital and it’s that spirit of generosity that’s at the heart of Mary’s House.

“As Patron I acknowledge Mary’s House Services tenth year of operations and reflect on the gift of refuge, safety and care they provide women and children in the community impacted by domestic and family violence” - Ms Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia

The Mayors Tanya Taylor, Mayor of Willoughby City Mary’s House does incredibly important work supporting women and children at a time when they need safety, care and practical help. I’m very proud that Willoughby City Council can work alongside Mary’s House, including helping with transitional accommodation when suitable Council housing is available. A safe place to live can make an enormous difference for someone leaving violence and rebuilding their life. Councils have an important role to play. We’re part of people’s lives through our libraries, staff, services, community centres and public spaces, which means we can help raise awareness, recognise when someone may need assistance and connect them with specialist support.

Coby Thomas is Captain of The North Sydney Bears I stand united with my teammates against domestic and family violence. We do not condone abuse in any form - physical, emotional or psychological - and we’re committed to showing respect to women, children and others around us, on and off the field. If we see or hear anything that isn’t right, we will not stand aside. We will stand up. Silence is not an option. In April we became the first New South Wales Rugby League team to introduce a Captain’s Code pledge against domestic and family violence. We’ve supported Mary’s House as a community partner for the past two years and attend their events, raise money and engage in conversations about the charity and their work. As athletes, people look up to us, especially kids, and we want to be strong role models in the community. We’ve got a voice we can use to help foster safe communities and be part of breaking the cycle of family violence.

“If we see or hear anything that isn’t right, we will not stand aside. We will stand up. Silence is not an option.”

The Next Generation Volunteer Charlotte Humphreys is from Mosman I first became aware of Mary’s House when I was the 2025 Service Captain at Redlands Cremorne. We started a relationship with the charity and organised fundraising events throughout the year. I think a lot of people my age know domestic and family violence is an issue, but don’t realise how much it relates to us. We see it in movies, but it happens where we live and involves people our age. Our understanding of relationships is still being shaped, so it’s important we learn to recognise when something is becoming unhealthy. I’m now a volunteer for Mary’s House, assisting with events, fundraisers and more. It’s fulfilling to know I’m playing my small part in helping women and children change their lives.

Put your best foot forward on Sunday 25 October for the 2026 Mary’s House Walk, an 8.8km walk from St Leonards Park through Balls Head Reserve and Lavender Bay, finishing at North Sydney Oval. This annual, family and dog-friendly event brings the community together to stand against domestic and family violence while raising vital funds for Mary’s House Services. Among those getting behind the event is Bill Kagaras and his team at On Path Physio on Blues Point Road. As well as putting together a team for the Mary’s House Walk, Bill also organises a fundraising Mother’s Day raffle each year. “We’ve been taking part for three years now,” Bill says. “What Mary’s House do is so important and the walk is a great way for us as a community to show that we say ‘no’ to domestic and family violence.”

s Reddam House North Shore approaches its second anniversary, it’s remarkable to reflect on how far the school has come. Established to bring Reddam’s renowned educational philosophy to Sydney’s Lower North Shore, the co-ed school has quickly developed into a thriving learning community, attracting families who value academic excellence, creativity and a personalised approach to education. From the Lower North Shore to centre stage! One of the highlights of 2026 has been the continued success of the school’s performing arts program. In partnership with Reddam House Sydney, the North Shore Senior Choir recently achieved national recognition by winning the prestigious National Eisteddfod. This outstanding accomplishment reflects the talent and dedication of students and staff, and the exceptional opportunities available at Reddam House North Shore. Connecting the school community Since opening, the school has welcomed families from across Sydney’s North Shore, Mosman and the Northern Beaches. Many students already travel from the Northern Beaches each day, drawn by Reddam’s unique educational offering and strong sense of community. As enrolments grow, families have indicated they would welcome a more

convenient way to access the school. In response, Reddam House North Shore is planning to introduce a dedicated school bus service, expected to operate by 2027, if not sooner. Proposed routes will connect key communities including St Ives, Lindfield, Chatswood, Lane Cove, Northbridge, Manly, Seaforth, Frenchs Forest, Killarney Heights and Terrey Hills, with additional stops planned for Mosman, Cremorne, Neutral Bay, Kirribilli, St Leonards and North Sydney. Experience the Reddam difference For families considering Reddam House North Shore, there has never been a better time to experience the school firsthand. The upcoming Primary School Taster Days provide students with the opportunity to experience life as a Reddam student. Families are also warmly invited to the school’s Open Day on Saturday 13 September, where they can meet the leadership team, tour facilities, observe Reddam’s innovative approach to teaching and learning and discover why so many families are choosing Reddam House North Shore. With strong enrolment growth, outstanding student achievements, an expanding community and exciting new transport options on the horizon, the future of Reddam House North Shore has never looked brighter. ●

or most pet owners, booking a holiday comes with a familiar catch. Who’s going to look after the furry family members? That’s where in-home pet concierge service PETCON Australia can help. Founded by north shore local Camelia Tobia to take the ‘ruff’ out of pet care, PETCON connects animal owners with carefully trained and thoroughly vetted professional pet and house sitters. Camelia had spent over six years house sitting and caring for pets and properties around the northside while also working in full time roles at North Sydney Council and community organisations. By 2024, she’d built a reputation as a trusted house and pet sitter, but then one unexpected DM sparked a bigger vision. “I was looking after a gorgeous Aussie Shepherd in Wahroonga when I received a message from someone wanting to book me in for Christmas,” she remembers. “It was only March and that made me think wow, it’s so hard for people to find sitters they can depend on. Wouldn’t it be great to have a network people can really trust.” Camelia got to work and a year later, she ran PETCON’s first onboarding and training

“WE MATCH THE PET’S NEEDS WITH THE SITTER’S SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE” 20

programme for potential sitters. As a qualified social worker, she takes a hands-on approach to approving the sitters on the platform. “To become PETCON-Certified, each sitter has to successfully graduate from our rigorous four week onboarding and training course,” she explains. As well as spending time learning from dog and cat behaviour specialists and house and pet sitting experts, sitters complete RSPCA Pet First Aid training, pass police and reference checks and meet strict insurance and safety requirements. That attention to detail extends throughout every pet’s stay. “We carefully match the pet’s needs with the sitter’s skills and experience,” Camelia says. “Then we organise a thoughtful Meet-andGreet to make sure everyone is comfortable before a booking is confirmed.” Sitters follow the pet’s normal routine, from favourite treats to daily walks and tailored enrichment, while providing regular photos, videos and even video call updates so owners can truly relax while they’re away. “Keeping pets in their own home, surrounded by familiar smells and routines, with consistent care and lots of cuddles, helps minimise their anxiety and ensure both the owners and their animals enjoy their break,” Camelia says. As well as pet and house sitting, PETCON offers a range of other animal services, including in-home day care for puppies and dogs with separation anxiety, cat visits,

A LOCAL HISTORY

Moments in time Recently reopened and celebrating its 90th anniversary, North Sydney Olympic Pool has been making a splash since 1936. Designed by architects Rudder & Grout in the Inter-War Free Classical style with Art Deco detailing, the pool quickly became the stage for Australian sporting history. In 1938 it hosted the swimming and diving events, seen in these photos, in the British Empire Games, which were the forerunner for today’s Commonwealth Games. In the decades that followed, the pool became one of Australia’s great record-breaking venues. An extraordinary 86 world records have been set at the Milsons Point pool, with swimming legends including Dawn Fraser, Jon and Ilsa Konrads, Lorraine Crapp, John Devitt, Shane Gould and Michelle Ford among those to grace its lanes. l

SECRET HISTORY

PURPLE REIGN Why is the north shore Sydney’s jacaranda hot spot?

F

or a few glorious weeks each Spring, the northside turns a luminous shade of purple. McDougall Street in Kirribilli becomes one of Sydney’s most photographed streets, with thousands of visitors descending on the suburb to wander beneath its canopy of jacarandas. The spectacle has become so popular that North Sydney Council has even introduced temporary weekend road closures and traffic controls to keep locals and tourists safe. There are many theories about how the trees became a north shore staple, including the charming tale of a local midwife gifting saplings to new parents when they took their bubs home from the Royal North Shore Hospital. The story goes

that she encouraged them to plant the trees to grow alongside their child. Today, you can claim a tree from the council to mark the birth of your child, but the midwife myth remains just that, with no evidence of it being true. The real story behind the Instagramfamous blooms stretches back almost a century, involving royalty, a Governor-General’s wife and a gift from a regional NSW town.

THE STORY GOES THAT SHE ENCOURAGED THEM TO PLANT THE TREES TO GROW ALONGSIDE THEIR CHILD northsider 27

SECRET HISTORY

The McDougall Street jacaranda canopy from above, and right, Ted Mack Civic Park’s lilac lovely in North Sydney

A Royal request In the 1930s, Her Excellency Lady Gowrie, wife of the then Governor-General, had been captivated by the jacarandas she saw during a visit to Grafton. She wanted to bring some of that purple magic to Kirribilli and asked North Sydney Council to beautify the streets of the suburb so they were suitable for welcoming royalty on approach to Admiralty House. The Mayor of Grafton then offered the area a generous gift of 30 young jacaranda trees. Nearly a century later, those trees have become one of the North Shore’s most recognisable landmarks. From South America to Sydney Jacaranda mimosifolia is actually native to South America, particularly Argentina and Bolivia. Double Bay nursery owner Michael Guilfoyle propogated a plant from a seed in 1868 and is credited with supplying jacarandas to some of Sydney’s grandest gardens which resulted in the species becoming a suburban favourite.

28

The North Shore on display The McDougall Street trees are far from the northside’s only purple performers. From mid-October to early November – although the season has been starting increasingly earlier each year - vivid jacaranda displays can be found flowering across Kirribilli, Lavender Bay, McMahons Point and Neutral Bay before turning the streets into a carpet of purple blossom. ●

Discover the flexible way to manage your short-term rental with the help of Lavender Bay local Elisa Tseng

or many property owners, short-term rental management doesn’t need to be an all-or-nothing arrangement. Locally owned management company, Cove Curation, is taking a more flexible approach, allowing owners to choose where they need professional support while retaining control of aspects they prefer to manage themselves. “Not every beautiful home needs a full-time property manager,” explains Elisa Tseng, Founder of Cove Curation. “Some owners need help getting the property ready. Some need professional photography while others may already manage their bookings but need support with cleaning, linen, guest assistance or property operations. That’s where Cove Curation’s flexible model can help.” The Cove model The Cove Curation model is built around three areas: Prepare, Launch and Operate, with Curate underpinning each as the brand’s ongoing quality standard. Prepare helps owners assess whether their property is suited to short-term rental and get it guest-ready, from presentation and amenities to linen and access. connect@covecuration.com.au 1300 738 065

@covecuration

Launch focuses on positioning the property for market, including listing strategy, platform setup, photography and guest documentation. Operate provides practical support including cleaning and turnover coordination, linen, inspections, maintenance and more. Cove Curation is also developing a 24/7 1300 guest-support service for assistance with access, check-in issues and troubleshooting. Flexible support, tailored to each property Owners can select individual services or a more comprehensive solution and every property is assessed against the Cove Curation Standard, ensuring standards are consistently high. The approach also reflects a broader shift towards flexible hosting models, such as Airbnb Co-Host. “Owners can retain control of their property, listing, reviews and booking income,” Elisa says. “Where supported by the platform, funds are paid directly to the owner, while Cove Curation provides the agreed management.” With pricing tailored to the level of support, Cove Curation offers a considered alternative to traditional property management. • Contact Cove Curation for a Short-Stay Readiness Assessment in time for Summer.

ART AND ABOUT

How the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre’s weekly sketch group is helping locals discover creativity and community

F

rom iconic views of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Luna Park to hidden foreshore spots and leafy backstreets, there’s something picture perfect around almost every corner in Kirribilli. The members of the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre’s weekly Stroll and Sketch Group certainly think so. For the past year, eight artists, ranging in age from their late teens to their 80s, have gathered every Tuesday to capture

“IT’S MENTALLY GOOD FOR YOU, IT’S SOCIAL AND YOU GO HOME FEELING HAPPY” 32

the neighbourhood around them. Among the group are retirees, university lecturers, creatives and complete beginners, all discovering their own style. Led by artist and Waverton local, Julie Keech, each session starts with a short lesson and demonstration which focuses on a different aspect of sketching such as composition, contrast, perspective or colour. The group then heads outdoors to put those skills into practice, bringing Kirribilli’s streetscapes to life with pen, ink and delicate washes of watercolour. “It’s lovely to see the group’s progress,” Julie says. “Some started with very simple sketches and now they’re producing beautiful work.”

Art with heart

The weekly Stroll and Sketch Group finding inspiration out and about in the northside neighbourhood. Right, local artist and group leader, Julie Keech, with her sketch of the Kirribilli Markets.

“Sketching enables you to capture the essence of people and places,” she continues. “It makes you notice parts of the world you wouldn’t normally stop to look at. It’s mentally good for you, it’s social and you go home feeling happy.” That sense of connection is being celebrated as part of the KNC’s 50th anniversary, with the group creating ten concertina sketchbooks inspired by the Centre and its community. Like the fold-out gatefold cover of this magazine, each book opens to reveal a continuous story, inviting viewers to explore scene by scene. Every concertina is different and they form a colourful portrait of the special place that has brought these artists together.

“I love the centre,” Julie says. “Jo, Ari, Dianne and the team make everyone feel so welcome. It’s like a family. They embrace you with friendliness, kindness and warmth. It’s a lovely place to go and spend time and I always come home feeling uplifted and looked after.” Julie urges everyone to discover what the Centre has to offer. From language lessons and a fully stocked lending library to music classes, fitness sessions and dozens of other activities and services, the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre brings all ages together to learn, socialise and share skills. “I’d encourage everyone to come along,” she says. “It’s a joy.” ●

Ask the vet!

Dr Jo-Ann Chan from independent, family-owned veterinary practices, Vets on Falcon in Crows Nest and Pet Medical Milsons Point, has the answers to some FAQs...

Q

Do pets enjoy coming to the vet? A: Yes! Many of our furry friends love dropping by daily to say hi to our team because they see us as a safe space for them. Creating that kind of relationship takes time and a series of positive experiences. At Pet Medical Milsons Point and Vets on Falcon, we’re proud to be one of only four animal hospitals in the country certified as a Fear Free clinic. Our whole team is trained in gentle handling and calming techniques and we use pheromones throughout the clinic to help create a relaxed environment. We also offer gold standard care for felines as a Cat Friendly Clinic, with a dedicated cat-only

Q

What’s the most unexpected thing you’ve found inside a pet? A: A Christmas tree pom-pom, courtesy of a very well-loved cat! As one of only 12 Australian Veterinary Association accredited Veterinary Hospitals of Excellence in NSW, and the only one on Sydney’s Lower North Shore, we are well-equipped with a suite of on-site diagnostic equipment and surgical facilities to be able to act quickly when cases like this come in. An ultrasound revealed the pesky pom-pom was lodged in kitty’s stomach and we removed it straight away. Our feline friend was soon back home, doing really well and looking for his next snack!

waiting area and consult room. We always start by moving at the pet’s pace, giving them time to settle before beginning the examination. That means soft voices, no unnecessary rushing and often conducting consultations on the floor at the pet’s level. Every calm interaction helps build trust and makes the next visit a little easier. We always encourage families to bring their pets in simply to say hello. There’s no appointment, just a pat, a treat and an opportunity to spend time with the team. We love hearing from families whose pets enjoy coming to see us. We even have a few regulars who sit outside waiting for us on weekends when we’re closed! It’s an excellent problem to have. How often should I be brushing my pet’s teeth? A: Plaque builds up quickly, so daily brushing is one of the best things you can do to protect your pet’s teeth and gums. Dental health is a big part of a pet’s wellbeing and its impact can extend far beyond the mouth to issues including heart and gastrointestinal health. This Spring, we’re offering free dental checks every Tuesday

Q

FA AN

FAMILY-OWNED AND OFFICIALLY FEAR FREE

Q

Does my pet love me or just whoever has treats? A: Dogs and cats form genuine emotional bonds with their pawrents. You can see that attachment in the way pets seek out their people, follow them from room to room or settle more easily when they are nearby. That isn’t just about food. It’s about familiarity, security and trust. At Vets on Falcon and Pet Medical Milsons Point we want the animals that visit us to feel those things too. We treat every pet as if they’re our own with lots of pats, cuddles and, yep, treats too!

and Thursday at Vets on Falcon and Pet Medical Milsons Point. Finding problems early allows us to talk through the options and create the right plan for your pet. Call our friendly team today to book. Can pets get hay fever or allergies? A: They can, but allergies in pets don’t always appear the way people expect. We often see itchy paws, red ears, recurrent skin infections and constant scratching and licking. Some pets can also experience gastrointestinal issues, such as vomiting or diarrhoea. These pets often need long-term management tailored to their specific symptoms. The aim is to reduce flare-ups, keep them comfortable and prevent secondary infections. Managing these conditions works best by adjusting the plan

as the pet’s needs change. Every animal visiting Vets On Falcon has access to tailored wellness plans, vaccinations, regular health checks and parasite prevention to ensure they’re happy and healthy at every age. What’s one question you wish every pet owner would ask? A: “What can I do now to help my pet stay healthy for as long as possible?” The best veterinary care isn’t just about treating illness. It’s about preventing problems where we can, detecting them early when they do arise and helping pets live longer, healthier and happier lives. Come and have a chat with our team about what you can do to keep your pet healthy at every stage of their life. l

LOCAL SERVICE

Talking it THROUGH

Could mediation be the way forward for you? Local lawyer Elizabeth Cohen is here to help

F

amily lawyer and mediator, Elizabeth Cohen, is bringing mediation preparation sessions to the Kirribilli Neighbourhood Centre this Spring, offering locals a practical way to try and resolve disputes without stepping foot in a courtroom. “Court can be daunting,” Elizabeth says. “These are emotional situations, not just legal ones, and each person has their own story. If we can settle matters and give everyone the space to think about what’s important and help them to feel heard, then mediation is a chance that is worthwhile taking.” Here, Elizabeth answers some frequently asked questions about the process… What is mediation? Mediation is a form of dispute resolution and is a private, confidential and structured process where an independent third party helps the participants to identify issues and explore solutions together in a cooperative setting. Unlike court, where a judge makes the decision, mediation allows the parties to

“THESE ARE EMOTIONAL SITUATIONS, NOT JUST LEGAL ONES, AND EACH PERSON HAS THEIR OWN STORY” 44

remain in control of the conversation and the outcome. The mediator helps participants find the solution themselves. Importantly, the process is confidential, meaning nothing that’s discussed can be used if the matter proceeds to court. What sort of issues can mediation help resolve? Mediation can help with almost anything. From family and neighbour disputes to small business disagreements and strata issues, mediation can help resolve conflicts early, often saving time, money and stress. What will people learn at the KNC sessions? The sessions will begin with an introductory seminar, giving locals an understanding of what mediation is and how it can help. From there, participants who think mediation may help them can begin a confidential process tailored to their situation. We’ll set up the process of getting a possible mediation going for them, involving discussing the issues with them, contacting the other party and working towards a resolution. With a focus on supporting the local community rather than large-scale commercial disputes, the program aims to strengthen connections and create more positive outcomes. While not every mediation resolves every issue, it can help clarify priorities, narrow disputes and make any next steps feel less daunting. l

FISH, CHIPS AND CONDIMENTS SERVES: 4 4 x 140 g (5 oz) boneless rock flathead fillets 150 g (5½ oz) rice flour, for dusting BATTER: 215 g (7½ oz) self-raising flour 400 g (14 oz) rice flour 10 g (¼ oz) baking powder 45 g (l½ oz) honey 345 ml (11½ fl oz) vodka (37 per cent alcohol) 550 ml (18½ fl oz) beer CHIPS: 3 kg ( 6 lb 10 oz) sebago potatoes 5 litres (169 fl oz) cottonseed oil TO SERVE: Yoghurt tartare sauce (page 54) 4 dill pickles 2 lemons, halved METHOD: •F or the chips, scrub the potatoes thoroughly, leaving the skin on, and cut into index-finger width and length batons. Soak in cold water overnight to remove some of the starches that can sometimes cause colour inconsistency when deep-frying. (If you want to cook the chips in this way, the recipe needs to be started 3 days ahead.) •D ecant the soaked chips from the liquid then transfer to a large heavy-based pot, cover with cold water and season the water with salt to taste (this will make your chips tastier

ithout question, fish and chips is one of the most challenging dishes to execute. It was the first non-negotiable inclusion on the menu when we opened Saint Peter, and for the first six months we also offered it as takeaway. This was quickly removed from the menu once we opened Fish Butchery, where it found its new home. For so long, fish and chips has been a vehicle to carry aesthetically and texturally compromised fish. The presence of odour and the absence of flavour in a bleached, skinless centre cut of unidentifiable fish are quickly resolved by a crispy golden exterior. If we continue to celebrate the mediocre, however, then the quality that the rare few continue to labour over will quickly become lost. Today, fish and chips sits proudly on the Saint Peter bar menu. It was and still is today a priority to communicate exactly where the fish is from and who caught it. It would be far simpler and more profitable to turn out the super fries and defrosted basa, but there’s no joy in that. Instead, we believe in the potential that fish and chips has to create something special – the memory of a moment. l

RECIPE in the end). Bring to the boil over a medium heat and cook for 10 minutes or until the chip is moments from collapsing but still holding its form. This stage is absolutely imperative to the condition of the final chip, as not enough cooking here will result in a dry, slightly chalky chip. Too much cooking, however, and the result will be chunks of potato rather than chips. • Remove the chips carefully from the water to wire racks and place uncovered in the freezer. Allow to dry overnight. • The next day, preheat the cottonseed oil in a deep fryer or large saucepan to 140°C (285°F). When the oil is at temperature, place the frozen once-cooked potato chips into the basket of the deep fryer or on a slotted spoon for a saucepan and submerge in the oil, allowing them to cook for 5 minutes or until a blistered skin has fully formed. Being patient and waiting for the skin to blister is so important as this stage determines how crispy the chip can be. • Remove from the oil and allow to cool, then return the chips to the freezer on a wire rack to dry overnight. • The next day, increase the temperature of the oil to 180°C (360°F) and fry the parcooked chips again until very crisp and golden, about 5-6 minutes. Drain well on paper towel and season with fine table salt. • To make the batter, whisk the self-raising flour, rice flour and baking powder together in a large bowl. Combine the honey and the vodka in a jug and pour into the flour mixture, ensuring all of the honey is scraped out from the bottom, then add the beer and whisk well. Like any batter, it is in its optimum condition the moment it is made, but keep refrigerated if needed to be stored.

• For the fish, preheat the oil to 180°C (360°F). Dip the fillets in the batter, then dust them lightly in rice flour then carefully lower into the oil and fry until very crisp, about 2 minutes. You may need to turn the fish over midway through the cooking for even colouring. Remove from the oil, season liberally with fine salt and rest for a minute before serving. • To serve, tip the chips evenly across four serving plates then top with the fried rock flathead fillets. Place a generous spoonful of the Yoghurt tartare sauce alongside a dill pickle and half a lemon. Finish the flathead fillets with a sprinkle of sea salt flakes.

YOGHURT TARTARE SAUCE MAKES ABOUT 500G (1 LB 2 OZ) 375 g (13 oz) plain yoghurt 3 large French shallots, diced 1 tablespoon small salted capers, rinsed, dried and finely chopped 60 g (2 oz) coarsely chopped cornichons 2 tablespoons finely sliced flat-leaf (Italian) parsley leaves METHOD: • Stir all the ingredients together in a bowl. This is an edited extract from Saint Peter Chapter and Verse by Josh Niland, published by Hardie Grant Books. Available in stores from 1 Sept. RRP $80

ON THE MENU

THE PERFECT B The Crows Nest café where community is always on the menu

I

f you’ve ever queued for a table outside Brewmance in Crows Nest, or lingered over brekkie at the popular café’s sister venue of the same name in Lane Cove, you’ll already have experienced the magic created by co-founders, Davide Crespi and Hoky Michael. While the coffee is exceptional and the menu is packed with generous dishes, it’s the atmosphere that makes these bustling venues extra special with every customer welcomed like a regular - even on the very first visit. “The local community is everything to us,” says Davide. “People who came through the doors on day one still come back in every day

“WE FOCUS A LOT ON CUSTOMER SERVICE BECAUSE WE WANT EVERYONE TO FEEL WELCOME AND THAT THEY BELONG” 56

and you get to know them like friends. It’s really special. We focus a lot on customer service because we want everyone to feel welcome and that they belong. That’s what it’s all about.” Crows Nest local Hoky met business partner Davide over a decade ago while the pair were working together in a Potts Point coffee shop. Newly arrived in Australia from Indonesia and Italy respectively, the pair became good mates, united by a shared passion for hospo and making people feel at home. “We built a really good connection and customers would always ask if we’d like to open a coffee shop together,” Hoky remembers. “Eventually we thought… why not?!” The idea simmered and in 2022, Brewmance was born, the name suggested by Davide’s wife to perfectly capture both the pair’s friendship and love of coffee. Their Crows Nest venue on Willoughby Road came first with Lane Cove opening in 2025.

From left: Brewmance’s famous chilli crisp, available to take home; housemade miso banana bread; the cafe’s signature personalised latte art and Bacon and Egg Roll; co-founders, Davide and Hoky.

T BLEND The Brewmance menu reflects the team behind it, blending Italian, Indonesian, Asian and Australian influences into dishes designed to be comforting and just a little unexpected. Seasonal selections keep things fresh, with customer feedback shaping new ideas. One of the signature dishes is their famous Bacon and Egg Roll which sees crispy maple smoked bacon layered with free-range egg, cheese and spicy mayo on toasted ciabatta. For extra punch, you can add housemade chimichurri or Brewmance’s cult chilli crisp, which is so popular, it’s soon to be available to buy in jars to take home. Other crowd favourites include the Teriyaki Chicken Toastie - sticky buffalo teriyaki chicken, melted cheddar, coleslaw and spicy mayo on toasted sourdough – a range of vibrant Asian inspired brunch bowls and a Build Your Own Breakfast option, which allows diners to customise every item on their plate. Sweet treats include a ricotta pancake stack and a decadent Tiramisu French Toast made from thick brioche topped with berries, housemade espresso custard and fluffy mascarpone.

“Everything is made to order,” Hoky says. “We hate food waste and we think that if you decide to go out to eat, it should be quality ingredients and dishes you wouldn’t necessarily make at home. We want everybody who comes to Brewmance to leave saying, ‘That was delicious and I’m full.’” When it comes to the beverage menu, whether it’s a perfectly balanced flat white, a Melbourne inspired Magic – a double ristretto topped with steamed milk and served three-quarters full – a cold drip or an iced matcha, every cup is crafted with care and often comes with personalised latte art too. Looking ahead to further potential Brewmance venues, the pair have plenty more ideas percolating, with a dream to one day give long-time staff the opportunity to become business partners themselves. “In the future, we’d love our core staff to become co-owners,” Davide says. “We had the opportunity to build something and we’d love them to achieve their dreams and grow with us.” l

Ted the puggle, northsider’s ‘rover’ reporter, meets local Shoodles Chester and Chase, the adorable Shih Tzu-Poodle crosses

T: Hi Chester and Chase! You’re local pup-fluencers on Instagram, do you get recognised when you’re out and about? C+C: Hi Ted! Yes, we do get recognised a lot, especially ‘cos we stand out as there’s two of us - double trouble in our matchy matchy outfits - and we ride around in a doggy stroller with our mum Stephanie. Chase is always hanging out over the handlebars because he’s always so excited to see everyone! T: I’ve seen on my socials that you love going out to lots of cool local places in your stroller. C+C: We got our stroller a few years ago when Chester got injured and couldn’t walk for three months. We still like wheeling around for lots of reasons. When our little legs get worn out after a long walk, it means

we can hop in and take a well deserved nap and when we’re out and about snacking and shopping with the family we get to sit up high and join in on the fun at the cafe. There’s lots of room to stash treats too. T: What are some of the best things about living on the northside? C+C: The North Shore is officially one of Australia’s most dog-loving neighbourhoods and you’ll get lots of people saying hello just walking down the street. We love nothing more than heading off on a walk from Kirribilli to Milsons Point and around Lavender Bay, with plenty to sniff, see and investigate along the way. The Harbour Bridge walk is another favourite, with spectacular views, lots of friendly dogs to say hello to and, most importantly, an excellent selection of smells to keep our noses busy. All that walking works up quite an appetite, so we have a few favourite foodie stops in Kirribilli too. San Antonio and Morgans are great places to refuel with a croissant and a coffee, while Batch Burgers is always

worth a sniff around. We also love stopping by Kirribilli Seafoods and The Flying Bear is another fave for a little treat and some people-watching. Basically, if there’s food involved, we’re happy to be there! Pet-O in Lane Cove is our favourite shop of course. They give out the best treats and our photo is even up on their photo wall with all our local furriends. T: I’ve seen you’re nervous doggos – so am I. What would you tell people about that? C+C: We’re smaller dogs so everything looks so much bigger and we can get a lil’ spooked sometimes by loud or fast moving people or furriends. If you see us out and about, give us some space, go slow and speak softly. And don’t make us say hi straight away if you see us shaking. Chester is especially nervous and isn’t so brave meeting new people. We love our forever family because they always make us feel safe and give us the best cuddles and that makes us feel better. T: And finally, my fave question of all! What’s your favourite food? C+C: Chicken Sticks! Dad makes us do tricks for them, like sit and shake paws, but then we get too excited and impatient. He gave up on teaching us any other tricks (we think we have trained him well hehe). T: I think I could learn a thing or two from you guys about getting treats! ●

Free dental checks! By age three, most dogs and cats have some form of dental disease that often goes undertreated. Behind that happy face may be sore gums, a cracked tooth or an infection developing beneath the surface. Pets can’t tell us when something hurts and they instinctively hide pain so dental problems can go unnoticed for months or even years. After treatment, families often tell us their pet seems brighter, more playful and more affectionate, simply because that hidden pain has finally been relieved. This Spring, we are offering free dental checks every Tuesday and Thursday at Vets on Falcon and Pet Medical Milsons Point. Finding problems early allows us to talk through the options and create the right plan for your pet, helping them keep eating, playing and enjoying life by your side. Call us today to book your pet’s free dental check - we’d love to see you and your furry friend this Spring!

or almost two decades, if you walked through the doors of the Neutral Bay Community Centre, chances are you’d be greeted by Richard Kelly. Always ready with a warm welcome, a friendly chat and, more often than not, one of his colourful Hawaiian shirts, before retiring from his volunteer duties last year Richard was part of the Centre’s everyday heartbeat. His extraordinary contribution was recently recognised with the dedication of The Kelly Room, honouring Richard’s 19 years of service to the northside community. Richard first joined the NBCC as a volunteer in 2005. What began through a love of dancing quickly evolved into something much bigger. As the Centre grew, Richard became a constant support

to staff, members and his fellow volunteers, while helping to create the warm, inclusive atmosphere that defines the NBCC today. Over the years, Richard’s dedication has been recognised many times. In 2011, he was named Volunteer Host of the Year, while in 2016 he was part of the Community Centre team honoured with a North Sydney Council Australia Day Community Award. More recently, in 2022 he received a Local Achievement Award from Felicity Wilson MP during NSW Seniors Week, recognising his outstanding commitment to the community.

“These awards tell an important story, but they only capture part of Richard’s contribution,” says NBCC Manager, Gill Melling. “For 19 years, Richard was a constant and reassuring presence at the Centre. Whether it was collecting the newspapers, making a last-minute run for milk or ensuring the paperwork for the next day’s classes was printed and ready, Richard could always be relied upon. “Many of us remember him sitting at the table, often working on a jigsaw puzzle, while at the same time keeping a watchful eye on the door. He was always ready to greet familiar faces and warmly welcome newcomers, helping to create the friendly and inclusive atmosphere that makes this Centre so special. As a volunteer, Richard’s commitment, kindness and dedication have enriched the lives of staff, our members and his fellow volunteers alike.”

The NBCC’s new space, The Kelly Room, is now open. On the ground floor of the Centre, it has easy access for prams, wheelchairs and mobility aids and offers a range of activities including chair yoga, Feldenkrais, yin yoga, social mahjong, men’s chat, a singing group and more. “It’s a great pleasure for us to name the room after Richard,” Gill says. “His contribution has become part of the fabric of the Neutral Bay Community Centre and his legacy will welcome future generations for many years to come.” ●

ART AND ABOUT

A colourful new chapter FOR STUDIO A

The artist collective with seven Archibald finalists is being drawn to North Sydney

S

tudio A, the acclaimed supported studio for professional artists with intellectual disability, is set to establish a new home at James Place in North Sydney. Previously based at Crows Nest Community Centre from 2017 to 2023, the not-for-profit then moved to temporary premises in St Leonards, which are now marked for redevelopment. The Studio A team approached North Sydney Council about remaining in the area and have been offered a five-year subsidised lease, with an option for another five years, to give the artists a permanent base from which to create, exhibit and collaborate. In return, Studio A will provide Council with an annual allocation of in-kind artwork licensing - meaning locally produced pieces by Studio A artists may start appearing across community events, public art and workshops. In the past year alone, Studio A artists participated in 41 exhibitions, including northside local Thom Roberts’ acclaimed solo exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, while collectively securing nine major national art award finalist spots. Since 2020, Studio A artists have chalked up 22 Archibald Prize finalist selections. They have also delivered more than 6,000 square metres of public artwork across Sydney and over 1.25 million people have attended exhibitions featuring their work.

Studio A was established in 2014 as a subsidiary of Studio ARTES, a not-for-profit organisation in Hornsby providing creative programs for adults with disabilities. Under the leadership of CEO and Artistic Director Gabrielle Mordy, Studio A helps talented artists gain public recognition, secure mentorships and commercialise their work. “The biggest obstacle we have is the perception that artists with disability can only do art therapy,” says Gabrielle. “When you buy work from our artists, you’re investing in a valuable, collectible piece.” Studio A’s work has included large scale installations, Biopak cup designs, tableware for MUD Australia and fabrics for fashion label Romance Was Born. Thom Roberts’ immersive installation, The 7 Oracle, can also currently be seen on the steps in Brett Whiteley Place. ● For more info head to studioa.org.au

LOVE LOCAL

HOP TO IT! P

Meet the local behind the nano-brewery bringing fresh flavour to the north shore beer scene

andan, pomelo, coconut, pineapple and mango aren’t necessarily the first flavours that spring to mind when you think about beer. But for northside nano-brewery founder, Aziz Tan, they’re all part of the adventure. Artarmon local Aziz started Island Hopper Brewery four years ago to bring together his love of beer, flavour and local produce, one small batch at a time. “The first beer I made was an American IPA using a small home brew kit I received as a gift,” Aziz remembers. “It was pretty average! But I’ve been hooked on brewing ever since.” As he honed his craft, Aziz’s beers began winning awards. He then qualified through

“BREWING IS THE PERFECT OUTLET TO BLEND TRADITIONAL PROCESSES WITH A UNIQUE TWIST” 72

the Beer Judge Certification Program and helped run a homebrew competition before taking the next step and deciding to turn his passion project into a brewery. Aziz then spent a year designing, plumbing and installing equipment before Island Hopper secured its licence in 2022. Six months later, on Valentine’s Day, he brewed the first batch of his signature Seabreeze Pacific Ale. Now, despite producing beer commercially, Aziz has kept Island Hopper intentionally small. He brews around one barrel at a time, which adds up to about 130 litres of beer. This approach gives him room to experiment and keeps the beer and his ideas fresh. “Inspiration for new beers comes from many sources,” Aziz says. “As president of the Flat Rock Brew Club, members are constantly bringing in ideas, such as forgotten beer styles and processes. My Singaporean heritage has also given me a deep love for food

and flavours and brewing is the perfect outlet to blend traditional processes with a unique twist” “Being a low-kilometre sourcing brewery, we benefit from world class local ingredients which don’t need to travel far,” Aziz continues. “Our base grains are almost entirely Australian grown, most of which are from NSW. Helping the local economy is a win/win situation.” The brewery’s local-meets-Southeast-Asia flavour can be tasted across the range. “Our Seabreeze Pacific Ale is a classic hoppy beer using hop varieties that express coconut, pineapple and mango profiles, plus pandan leaves for a subtle dessert twist,” Aziz says. Then there’s the Norwegian-style Pomelo Voss Ale made with pomelos hand-picked from a friend’s farm located just an hour from the brewery. A specific yeast strain

that ferments beautifully in Sydney’s weather conditions completes the recipe. “Pomelos are a popular Southeast Asian fruit often presented as a gift for visitors,” Aziz explains. “They’re sweet and exceptionally high quality for brewing.” And as for the local’s favourite tipple, the Sunset Amber Lager has become a go-to, offering an easy-drinking lager with a little more malt character. While Island Hopper might currently be small-batch, Aziz’s ambitions for his brews are anything but. “We’re still relatively under the radar,” he says. “Hopefully as word spreads, we can start to get more distribution around the area. The community has been amazingly supportive and it’s wonderful to see people coming together for one of my beers.” Cheers to that!

FLOWER POWER

BLOOMING

lovely

ucked between the freeway and Lavender Bay, people often stride down Middlemiss Street on their way to somewhere else. But this Spring, pockets of native grasses, fragrant herbs and colourful calendulas are set to encourage passers-by to take a beat. The recent growth is the result of a community planting project led by Geordie Peacock, founder of Wyldwood Collective, the florist and creative collective that’s been taking root at the back of laneway café, Bay Ten Espresso, since the start of the year. Through partnerships with North Sydney Council’s Streets Alive program and Better Business Partnerships, Geordie has taken on the care and maintenance of the verge gardens, selecting a planting palette that reflects the surrounding parks and gardens of Lavender Bay, Milsons Point and Kirribilli. “Having plants in urban environments is so important,” says Geordie. “They can help stabilise soil and draw toxins from the ground, improve air quality and create

“I WANTED IT TO BE A SPACE THAT CELEBRATES CREATIVITY AND HELPS PEOPLE CONNECT” 76

habitats for insects and pollinators. They make people happy too!” The planting project is a natural extension of Wyldwood Collective. More than a florist, the boutique combines fresh flowers with a carefully curated collection of paintings, pop art, photography, digital illustrations, quirky ceramics, homewares and small-batch goods by Sydney artists and makers. “I wanted Wyldwood to be more than somewhere people buy flowers,” says Geordie. “I wanted it to be a space that celebrates creativity and helps people connect.” That vision was shaped by seeing how difficult it can be for emerging creatives to find supportive retail opportunities. “For years, I’d seen local artists and creatives struggle to find places to showcase their work,” Geordie says. “The options were always the same: high-rent retail spaces, galleries taking steep commissions, markets where handmade items are dismissed or damaged or co-ops requiring hours no one realistically has.” To help change that, Geordie has created a consignment program where artisans only pay a small commission when their work sells. Sustainability is another thread running through every aspect of Geordie’s work. “I don’t use florist’s foam in any of my arrangements,” she says. “Our water packs

are compostable and all of our wrapping paper is recycled too.” In addition, there’s a vase library which allows customers to select a vase to borrow with their arrangement in exchange for a 10% discount when they return it. And through Better Business Partnerships, Geordie has been able to install a macerating dehydrator that transforms floral waste as well as coffee grounds, fruit and veg scraps, and eggshells from Bay Ten Espresso, into nutrient-rich organic fertiliser. That compost is used on her Middlemiss Street verge gardens, creating a

regenerative cycle where yesterday’s floral waste helps tomorrow’s blooms thrive. Next on the horizon for Geordie is a community herb garden, as well as relaxed floristry workshops for locals in Spring and Summer. “They’re a place people can gather to create seasonal arrangements, learn a new skill and connect over flowers,” she says. So whether it’s a handcrafted bouquet, a shelf showcasing local makers or a verge garden bringing a pop of colour to people’s day, Middlemiss Street is set to bloom all year round. ●

Local’s last word. My favourite place for coffee is…the North Spoon in McMahons Point. They make delicious coffee and the staff are great. My favourite local walk is… anywhere around Lavender Bay - it’s such a fabulous area - but especially Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden. I’ll never get tired of that incredible view and I feel so lucky to work just up the road from it. If I want to enjoy a wine or cocktail, I go to…the Wylde Bar at the View Hotel in North Sydney. It’s an easy walk up the hill from the RAS and has a great vibe. Not many people know it’s there and it has a really good happy hour. The hotel is a wonderful place to stay

My all-time favourite brekkie spot in the area is…

Xenos in Crows Nest. Their Eggs Benedict are the best around!

a night too. It’s close to the Metro and the train and has such wonderful views across Lavender Bay and Sydney Harbour. The best meal I’ve had in the area recently was at… Loulou Bistro in Milsons Point. It’s the perfect place for that special dinner for two and the classic French menu is always inviting.

I also love the Loulou Boulangerie and Traiteur next door to the Bistro. Their quiches and pâtés are absolutely delicious. My ideal weekend in the area…would always include a trip to the Royal Art Society’s gallery of course! We’re free to visit and we’re open 11am-4pm on weekends and 10am4pm during the week. Exhibitions change regularly throughout the year and showcase traditional and contemporary works by both established and emerging artists. Find us at 25-27 Walker Street and be sure to pop in to say hello!
