Miles Makes Right Decision; Harris Poised to be LSU’s “Brandon Football”

by Tony Onellion In what would have been an obvious decision for nearly anyone else after last Saturday’s game, LSU football coach Les Miles Monday named true freshman Brandon Harris the starting quarterback for the Auburn game in Jordan-Hare Stadium on October 4th. LSU has not played anything like a hare at Auburn in the past 20 years, eking out tortoise-like wins or losses like 9 to 10, 12 to 10, 19 to 15 or 3 to 7.

Harris gives the Tigers their best chance of actually scoring in double digits in the first quarter in recent memory. This kid is smart, articulate and talented…. something LSU hasn’t had at quarterback since Herb Tyler or Tommy Hodson. He’s a leader and an athlete. He could be the best thing to happen to LSU’s offense in the Les Miles era.

Like Jordan Jefferson, Jarrett Lee and others before him, sophomore quarterback Anthony Jennings has been set up to fail by a coaching staff not given the green light by Miles to actually develop his style and abilities. Jennings is too conservative, too “old school” to make an impact on this team. His mental state is a shadow of his physical abilities but unless Cam Cameron grows a pair and tells Miles to completely butt out of “his” offense, the only saving grace will be the ability of confident players like Harris to take the bull by the horns and make it happen.

Don’t write off Jennings yet but don’t expect the Marietta, Georgia product to lead the Tigers out on the field for their first offensive snap in any future game in 2014.

So it’s the Bossier City Bomber who goes into the state of Alabama with a bit of a swagger and the hearts of his teammates. The noise level at Jordan-Hare will not approach the noise level produced during the actual ten to 15 minutes that Tiger “fans” filled Death Valley against Mississippi State. However, a sustained roaring crowd at Jordan-Hare could rattle Harris, who has seen a disappearing act rivaling the moves of David Copperfield by the so-called LSU faithful four times this year in Baton Rouge and once in Houston. LSU fans need to find other ways to protest a crappy schedule and “pound the rock” offensive philosophy other than show up for one half of a game and then leave for home or to tailgate on campus. I would rather see 70,000 show up who really support this team through thick and thin and stay to the bitter or boring end than the announced 100,000 plus fair-weather ticket buyers/true fan mixture that leaves Tiger Stadium in the second half looking like the Tulane attendance in the Superdome. You won’t find a thin crowd at the Greenies’ new stadium but you will continue to see the trendy attendees make their cameos in Death Valley before rushing off after offering their symbolic support. What a joke! Try that garbage at a Saints game!

Meanwhile, college football history is being made this weekend as six of the seven Western Division SEC teams play each other with all six being ranked in the top 20 nationwide. Only Arkansas, a team receiving some votes to put them in the top 35 nationally, is not included. LSU plays four of these top 20 teams this year, starting with #5 Auburn this weekend.

It’s imperative that Harris gets the reps and reputation that will lead the Tigers to a legitimate shot at winning the SEC West - and with it the accompanying spot in the four-team playoff to determine the national champion in college football for 2014.

ENGLISH PEAS FOOD FOR THE HOME GARDEN The garden pea or English pea as we call it in the South is a cool season crop, one of the legume family. It thrives in cool weather with ample soil moisture.

To produce a successful fall crop of English peas in Louisiana, peas must be planted early enough for the crop to be harvested before the first heavy frost and late enough so that the plants are not blooming while the temperature is too high for proper fruit set. Young plants will tolerate considerable cold and light frosts, but the flowers and green pods are often injured by heavy frost.

The entire month of September is the best time to plant English peas. Most varieties require 70 to 80 days from planting until they are ready to be harvested.

Varieties recommended for planting in Louisiana are Wando (a non-staking type), Thomas Laxton and Premium Gem. Other varieties should be grown on a small basis to determine if they are adapted to this part of the country.

A new variety and type of pea that should be given a try is Sugar Snap. This variety is an AllAmerican selection, meaning that it was outstanding in plantings made all across the nation. The pods of Sugar Snap are quite fleshly and edible. They’re similar to snap beans. The plants will attain a height of 4 to 6 feet and will need a fence or trellis for support. They are harvested in the fully mature, green stage, which means many more edible pounds per unit of garden.

English peas respond to organic matter added to the row before planting. They are very sensitive to drought and also to water-logged soils; therefore, where soil drainage may be a problem, build a high row. Be prepared to irrigate if rainfall is not sufficient. This crop, just as most other legumes, prefers a slightly acid soil, although it will not tolerate excess soil acidity.

Before planting English peas, apply 2 to 3 pounds of a complete fertilizer such as 8-24-24 per 100 feet of row. No additional side-dressing of nitrogen is necessary. One or two drills on a row is suggested for planting English peas. Plant the seed about 1 inch deep and about 2 inches apart within the row. If two drills per row are planted, space the drills 8 to 12 inches apart. Most varieties need some type of support, such as a trellis or fence. The variety Wando, is a bush type pea that doesn’t need a trellis to run on. When harvesting English peas, pods should be picked when fully grown and well developed and before the peas start to get hard.

Prune Roses in Late Summer

Roses are generally pruned around mid- to late August in North Louisiana and in late August or the first week in September in South Louisiana. This pruning is not as severe as the one done in late winter, and it prepares roses for the outstanding October/November blooming season. For vigorously upright-growing hybrid teas and grandifloras, this pruning is particularly important to control height and produce a more pleasingly shaped shrub. These roses should be pruned back to about 2 to 3 feet (cut back larger, more vigorous cultivars at the lower level). Remove any dead canes and thin weak canes the size of a pencil or smaller.

Old garden roses, such as China, Bourbon, Noisette, Tea and others, would likely benefit from a late summer pruning, but such pruning is more optional. Trim these roses as needed to keep them shapely and the desired size. Modern shrub and landscape roses also may be pruned now. Generally, these roses are cut back about one-third their height, but the amount of pruning is generally determined by the situation and desires of the gardener. It is particularly important to cut back any especially long, vigorous shoots that make the shrub look less shapely. Bushes that are pruned to keep them smaller will need more pruning than those that can be allowed to grow to their natural size.

It is also a good idea to fertilize roses at the time they are pruned. Choose a con¬trolled-release fertilizer that will feed the roses over an extended period. Using fertilizers that contain systemic insecticides and fungicides may help control these pests during the fall bloom season.

Guidelines on Using Color Creating an attractive, colorful look with bedding plants is easier than ever, but it’s a good idea to do a little thinking and planning before you go to the nursery, and you will generally be more pleased with the results.

Lots of warm-season bedding plants are added to landscapes in April and May to provide color through the summer months. Now, and through the summer, you can evaluate the colors you chose and where you used them. If the color scheme isn’t as great as you thought it would be, it’s only there for a season. You can always try something different next time. Here are some basic guidelines for using color in the landscape.

Combine cool colors together (reds with a blue tint, burgundy, rose, pink, magenta, purple, violet, lavender, blue, navy and any variations of those colors) or warm colors together (reds with an orange tint, orange, gold, yellow, rust, peach and any variations on these colors) for reliably harmonious results. Use color where you want to focus attention, such as at your front door. Never use color to “beautify” an unattractive feature in your landscape such as a trash can area. You will simply make sure everyone notices it. Generally, reduce the number of colors you use for best results. In other words, use the colors you like in combinations that you like, but don’t use every color you like at the same time in the same bed.

Pastel colors make a space look larger and more open and tend to create a serene, restful mood. Vibrant, rich colors, on the other hand, energize the landscape and can help make a larger area seem smaller and more intimate. The large amount of green foliage that appears in the landscape makes it more forgiving of wild color combinations, but its best not to push it too far.
