MEMORIAL DAY BECOMES MORE MEMORABLE

by Tony Onellion When I was a boy, Memorial Day was celebrated differently than today. In the 1950’s, veterans from both world wars and Korea were still numerous and the celebration involved primarily retired or inactive military personnel. Most of them didn’t talk about their service and the celebrations involved more parades than today. Today’s generational celebration includes a larger number of active military personnel, more women and more former service personnel seemingly traumatized by their experiences. The stress of battle in the 1990’s through today includes the new anxiety of not knowing who your enemy is, even on sight, more limited response to the enemy and more policing than actual combat.

Combatants don’t usually have a geographical objective as defined by past warfare; “taking the hill” has become “keep the hill under control because we can’t keep it anymore.” Soldiers lose the exhilaration of a clear-cut victory and measurable, obtainable goals.

There is no more “island hopping” to victory. Instead, we must consider every human condition, every non-combatant involvement, every political parsing.

Despite two “wars” that led to nothing positive (Korea and Vietnam), today’s actions involve the new-found respect for the military. Men and women in uniforms are now being considered heroes by the general population. Compare that to the vulgar, vile, misinformed reaction of the -mid to late ’60’s during Vietnam when our returning troops were vilified, spat on and treated like dirt.

Today’s returning veterans are getting a better reception from Americans; it’s the political process and veteran benefits that need to be straightened out.

But now our fighting men and women come home to a better family situation, a better community situation, a better level of respect. Jobs and benefits are still lagging but organizations like Wounded Warriors weren’t around in the 20th century. A disabled veteran has a much better chance for an active, productive life today than those soldiers, sailors and airmen who fought forty, fifty, sixty, seventy years ago. The price is still steep for freedom and democracy. It will never be devalued. But for the first time in modern history, veterans are coming home to a culture that values their sacrifice as much as it values the future. Returning veterans from World War One came home to a changing world of women’s rights, Prohibition, the glamorization of crime, radio, mass produced automobiles and talkie movies. Too many unscathed Americans were moving into that future, not thinking of the returning soldier. World War II’s end brought us television, plastics, interstate highways, easier credit, home ownership and the threat of Communism. The returning fighters then had to compete with all the new glitz of the late 1940’s. Korea was just more of the same to America without a validation of military purpose and Vietnam was an extreme action with even less political or military purpose. Little or no glory or validation for those veterans, who suffered in those two military actions of the early ‘50s and mid-to late ‘60s.

It seems today’s society realizes that military victory may never become a factor again in our makeup and so those who serve will receive what positive benefits come from physical combat.

Without that societal support, it would be near impossible to create the armed services needed to defend our country. What started out as a Guardians of Rescue Program expanded into it’s own non-profit 501c3 charity! Training our rescued dogs to be service dogs takes much time, dedication and cost, but it is well worth the effort to help our veterans suffering from the invisible wounds of war. Re-adjusting to civilian life is not always easy.

Service and comfort animals have been proven to increase confidence, independence and certainly bring joy into the lives of our nations heroes.

THE LAWN: FRIEND OR FOE?

Many homeowners see a lawn only as a chore; to fertilize is to have to mow more often.

There are some drawbacks to having a healthy, vigorously growing lawn, but there are some very positive trade-offs, too. The beauty and peacefulness of a nice lawn have always been valued by man down through the ages. For urban dwellers and rural residents alike, a well-kept lawn creates a feeling of serenity and a link with nature. Landscapes around homes and businesses always leave favorable impressions. A well-kept lawn increases the value of property by six percent, which can make the home and grounds worth more if you put it on the market.

Another benefit is the cooling effect grass has on the air, particularly around the home. Grass helps reduce air conditioning costs and makes outdoor activities, particularly in hot and steamy Louisiana, much more pleasant. Oxygen given off by a 50-foot square of turfgrass is sufficient for a family of four. Studies also have shown that noise pollution is reduced by a healthy lawn, that grassy slopes can lower traffic noise by as much as nine decibels.

Man’s environment is maintained in various ways by grass. It filters and cleans the air, lessens the loss of soil into surface water, and the moisture level is maintained as water filters down to the grass’s root system. A healthy turf extracts minerals that might otherwise pollute the ground water. Other positives include the lawn acting as a firebreak between burning material and the homestead. And, generally, litter is less likely to be thrown on well-maintained turf.

Aside from being essential to many sports such as golf, turf enhances sporting activities by offering a safe and softer playing surface. Good turf reduces injury in athletics. Joggers and walkers are much less likely to become foot sore and leg weary on turf than on harder surfaces.

With all this going for it, turfgrass deserves a place of respect for what it contributes to our quality of life. Simple guidelines to the establishment and maintenance of a healthy lawn are available through the county agent’s office.

The grasshopper occurs throughout South Louisiana as far north as Alexandria, as well as further north into the Red River Valley. Serious outbreaks most often occur in the river parishes between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

The eastern lubber grasshopper is an occasional pest of citrus, cultivated crops and landscape ornamentals. Normally, this grasshopper seems to prefer open woods, weedy fields and weedy roadside vegetation. But in some situations these grasshoppers may spill over into yards and gardens in residential areas. The eastern lubber may survive the winter in Louisiana as it does in Florida, but only in very low numbers. The grasshopper produces one generation per year with the eggs beginning to hatch in the early spring.

The immature grasshopper is referred to as a nymph, and nymphs grow into adults through a series of five molts. While the length of these nymphal stages varies, each stage averages 15 to 20 days.

HOUSEHOLD The adult grasshoppers begin to appear later in the summer. Then after mating, the adult female ITEMS will deposit egg masses in the soil. Each egg mass contains about 50 eggs, and each female will lay about three egg masses, which remain in the soil through the fall and winter before beginning WOODEN DEER STAND the cycle again when they hatch out in the spring of the following year. One critical moisture stress in the spring or summer could lead to an early demise for such a plant.

Begin the spring with a good mulch around all new plantings. Spreads six to eight inch cover of pine straw, leaves, bagasse or other organic matter under a new plant. A good mulch reduces soil temperature, prevents sudden changes in soil temperature, and most important, it will conserve moisture in the soil. A mulch will also reduce competition for soil nutrients from weeds.

Since Louisiana often experiences some high winds, large trees should be staked in some fashion to keep them upright and to prevent much movement. More trees are lost by winds loosening the trunk of a tree from its roots than by any other manner. Very little fertilizer is needed for a new plant during its first year. If a gardener has provided a good planting bed with good top soil, organic matter and sand, plants should be able to make it for several months on their own.

However, a light application of fertilizer in mid-summer should prove beneficial.
