Tony’s Take TIGERS “D” FOR REAL; OFFENSE HAS WORK TO DO
As the Tiger band played “Born to Run” for their first Super Bowl halftime salute number, I wondered if it was an attempt to get the LSU running game back to where it started against Clemson a week ago. The Tiger offense looked average to mediocre Saturday against a very underrated Louisiana Tech team that confused and contained the LSU offensive outside efforts and most of its newly found rushing game. Tech’s 3-3-5 type defense has always been a thorn for the Tigers and with a deplorable seven quarterback sacks allowed, the offensive line, especially the right side, looked, well…so 2024 and 2025. Three interceptions by Sam Leavett, one for a 100-yard T.D. scamper,put the Tigers one last-minute pass deflection by Star defender Dashawn Spears away from being behind at halftime. A 10-7 lead going into the second half increased grudgingly as Tech controlled most of the second quarter and the first half of the third quarter with their very good line play and ability to take advantage of a miserable second quarter by Leavett, who appeared Jamie Howard-like with his three first half picks. A smattering of boos accompanied the team to the locker room and an unsettled 90,000 plus fans appeared nervous as the third quarter began. Not to worry. LSU also had seven quarterback sacks by five individuals and showed that if the offense can score 24 points or more, they should not be pressed as games wind down. This defense showed it will not break or panic but then again they haven’t played a team that could create such a situation. They will this weekend when the “Illegal Lane….Changers” return to quaint Oxford where 60,000 plus Rebel fans will try and make Lane Kiffen feel like a mid-60’s civil rights worker in Mississippi. The most talented quarterback/running back duo LSU may face this season will try and dent the Tiger defense as Leavett and Dilon Jones attempt to conjure up their Clemson efforts to try and score 30 or more on Ole Miss’s good but average defensive set. The Tigers, of course, did revert to form the final 15 minutes of the game with four touchdowns and a field goal to post a 45 to 14 win, giving up a second-team 67-yard touchdown pass in the final half of the fourth quarter. But that didn’t affect LSU’s status as the second best team in the SEC behind Texas, who finally pulled out a second half win over Ohio State in Austin, 24 to 23. Arch Manning became of age during the game’s final quarter as he and his teammates truly helped their overrated coach, Steve Sarkisian, finally win a really big game. The Tiger passing game is showing three relatively dependable receivers with Tre’Drez Green at tight end and Winston Watkins and Eugene Wilson at wideouts, although both wideouts have drop issues and neither can be considered anywhere near the likes of Malik Nabors, Justin Jefferson or Ja’marr Chase at this junction. Green, though, is the real deal… a tight end with NFL caliber receiving skills and versatility that should net him a first round draft call next spring. LSU has the league’s best defense and a budding star in freshman Deuce Geralds at defensive tackle. The undersized Geralds had a forced fumble, sack and tackles for losses as well as plugging the middle for the second straight week. He shows promise of being the next Booger McFarland in the middle but lighter and taller. If an All-SEC defense was chosen today, Geralds, Whit Weeks and Princewell Umanamielen would be first team with D.J. Pickett and Jordan Ross right behind. LSU has a solid front seven starters and immediate backups and have quality in their Star and defensive back starters. Getting second team backups at Star, corner and safety is paramount if the Tigers are going to have a chance to go into the Alabama game undefeated. ‘Bama showed they are still Alabama against Kentucky in Saturday’s second half although this Tide squad does not have the star power of the Saban teams. I rank the top SEC squads today as Texas, LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss and Tennessee with Texas A&M close at 7th. Oklahoma may be the most overrated and Mississippi State the most overlooked. Florida, Missouri, South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Kentucky and Arkansas are on the outside looking in. LSU plays five of the six top tier teams and Mississippi State, leaving Auburn and Arkansas as the only relatively easy SEC foes. But both games are on the road and they’ll play Arkansas in what will be a probable cold weather season finale’ in Fayetteville. -0-

There’s more to herbicides than just mixing up a solution and spraying unwanted plants. Depending on how they are applied, herbicides can be classified into two categories. Most consumer pre-emergent herbicides are sold as dry granules, though liquid concentrates are also available. For either form to be effective, the active ingredient must move down to the soil surface. That is why product labels often direct users to water granular products after application. Maintaining a consistent barrier across the treatment area also improves effectiveness. Use a broadcast spreader for even coverage. Hi, Everyone!
Things have really been crazy and getting crazier it seems! It feels like I am burning the candle and both ends and these crazy rain showers don’t help at all. I decided to run to the store and pick up a gallon of milk since it had just finished raining so I should be okay. I went into the store, grabbed the milk, checked out, headed outside and the sky had opened up again. I could not just stand there and wait for the rain to stop since I had 25 Vendella Roses, a bunch of Limonium and Leather Leaf. So here I go, tromping through the pouring rain for the second time. But on the bright side, It is Summer time, so the rain left nice!
Two games. Two victories. And if you’re keeping score beyond the football field, LSU has picked up another pretty significant win as well. The first two weeks of the Lane Kiffin era have been anything but boring. LSU opened the 2026 season by absolutely dismantling Clemson, 51-10, in Tiger Stadium. One week later, the Tigers survived a much uglier night against Louisiana Tech before pulling away for a 45-14 victory.
So, let me tell you about today’s project. I was asked to make 3 presentation bouquets for some young ladies attending the Creole Gumbo Ball, to be presented to them by the King of this year’s festivities. I had not made presentation bouquets in years. But since the Creole Gumbo King is a personal friend I was honored to be able to do this. The picture shows one of the bouquets in a small vase so the flowers could still drink until it was time for them to be delivered. To be honest, I didn’t even think of taking a picture of them simply lying on the table. I hope you can see the beauty of the roses. This was so much fun to make. I really miss making all those different floral designs. Well, that’s my craft for this time. What will your next project be? Mine......I don’t know. Nothing goes as I plan it seems. That makes LSU 2-0. But perhaps the biggest storyline surrounding LSU football hasn’t involved a scoreboard at all. It has involved lawyers, judges, the SEC office and a battle over who gets to decide what college football looks like in this new era. And so far? LSU isn’t backing down. DOMINATION, THEN ADVERSITY The Clemson game was everything LSU fans dreamed about during the offseason. LSU rolled up 644 yards of offense in Kiffin’s debut and overwhelmed Clemson in all three phases. Quarterback Sam Leavitt threw for 230 yards, rushed for another 113 and accounted for three touchdowns. LSU’s defense created points of its own, and by the time it was over, Clemson had been embarrassed, 51-10. That was the fun one.

Then there is the other fight. LSU became the center of one of the strangest disputes in modern college football after the SEC attempted to prevent former NFL signees from returning to college competition. The controversy centered largely around former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, who followed Kiffin’s path toward LSU after spending time with NFL organizations. The SEC adopted its own prohibition against players who had signed NFL contracts, setting up a confrontation involving LSU, the conference and the courts. On September 3, a Louisiana judge issued a preliminary injunction that prevented the NCAA and SEC from enforcing the restriction against the affected athletes. The SEC responded by escalating matters dramatically. The conference filed a federal lawsuit and eventually scheduled a meeting at which SEC presidents and chancellors could consider whether LSU should actually be expelled from the conference. Under conference rules, removing LSU would have required support from at least two-thirds of the league’s presidents. Think about that for a second.

There will be bigger football games ahead, beginning with Kiffin’s highly anticipated return to Ole Miss. There could also be additional chapters written in the courtroom. But after two weeks, LSU football is undefeated where it matters most. And LSU has demonstrated something else along the way. Whether the opponent is wearing a different colored jersey or an expensive suit, these Tigers appear perfectly comfortable fighting back. 2-0 on the field.

One big victory in court. The Lane Kiffin era at LSU is only getting started. And boring? It definitely isn’t going to be boring. PASSING OF DETILLIER LEAVES UNFILLABLE SPORTS VOID
The death of the second best known LaFourche Parish sports personality earlier this month has created an irreplaceable chapter in overall sports reporting in Louisiana. 65-year old Mike Detillier was a special talent, a bayou bred hulk of a man who knew Louisiana sports - from high school, college and the Saintsbetter than anyone who ever covered the genre. Detillier died from pancreatic cancer September 6th, a day after LSU began their rebirth against Clemson in Tiger Stadium. Detillier was a high school fullback and linebacker and at age 24 began his journalism career with Mike Detillier’s NFL Draft Report. He benefitted from tutelage teaming with such area sports experts as Buddy Diliberto and worked with a number of radio and television outlets and newspapers throughout the past 41years. I met him in Houma in 1990 when I was expanding my publishing footprint outside of the Northshore. He was a friend of another publisher and I could tell then the man knew and loved his sports on all levels. He had served as co-host on WWL’s Second Guess Show with Bobby Hebert, his fellow Cajun and LaFourche Parish sports personality as well as others, giving his views on teams, personalities and situations with a unique, almost quiet personality but one that could rev up enthusiasm instantly over a player or team as the situation warranted. Never negative, Detillier was a down home version of Ed Daniels, another well respected and rounded sportscaster who passed away two years ago while attending Saints preseason camp in California. Unlike his fellow LaFourche Parish buddy, Bobby Hebert, Detillier could handle the irascible former NFL quarterback on the air and the team was as good as it got in a sports region known for its colorful sports personalities such as Hap Glaudy, Diliberto and Jim Henderson. He will be missed by those who worked with and heard him in person and on electronic media. -0-

LANE CHANGER SHOWS HOW ITS DONE IN THE NIL ERA
It wasn’t that many years ago the talk of succeeding Nick Saban at Alabama virtually belonged to Dabo Swinney, the highly successful Clemson coach who found a way to beat Alabama twice in national postseason play. Kalen DeBoer instead was selected when Saban stepped away after the 2024 season. Swinney, an Alabama boy, played as a walk-on receiver for the Tide in the late ’80’s and later started his coaching career in Tuscaloosa. In the past two years, both teams have lost some cache’ but Clemson has lost a lot more. The malaise that followed LSU after their phenomenal 2018 season when they manhandled a much stronger Clemson team then than played against Lane Kiffen’s opener September 5th was evident in spades for Clemson. The Lane Kiffen-led LSU Tigers, college football’s most controversial team in 2026, destroyed a shell of a Clemson team, 51-10 on September 5th, allowing only a short field field goal in the opening minutes of the game and a garbage time 71-yard scoring drive late in the 4th quarter. The game featured a lightning show that delayed kickoff two hours, on on-field laser show that followed the end of the first half and a four-quarter Kiffen Kickoff Show that featured the best of the college football’s transfer portal/NIL/former college player package formatted by Kiffen and company. The details are myriad: 600-plus offensive yards, eight yards per play average, balance in rushing and passing, quality depth in the wideout and running back rooms, good limited time play by former Elon quarterback Landon Clark, an early All-American performance by tight end Trey’Dez Green and a solid offensive line performance by the starting five that did not offer substitutions but showed they have jelled as a unit. A team record 38 first downs. On defense, a solid statement that the edge has been secured from mobile quarterbacks, sweeps and RPO’s, although Clemson didn’t seem to have the latter in their play book. Four sacks, eleven tackles for losses, evidence that the top 16 to 18 line and linebacker defenders can do their jobs. Only corner D.J. Pickett looked vulnerable early on three targets to his side of the field allowing three Clemson receptions but Pickett and his starting secondary teammates kept a lid on the Tigers for 58 minutes. In all, an A+ for Kiffen and his coaches for taking a decimated LSU football roster from 2025 and turning it into a unit that will have Ole Miss fans even more pissed September 19th when Kiffen brings his team into Oxford. An early prediction that Ole Miss might be a slight favorite in the game will probably disappear as LSU begins to perfect their craft following last weekend’s dismemberment of a Louisiana Tech team that hung 80 on Northwestern in their opener two weeks ago. To be clear: this team has no Joe Burrow, Justin Jefferson or Ja’Marr Chase on its roster. But it does have a coach that understands offensive schemes much better than Ed Orgeron did, the Cajun who took passion and spirit and melded a superior offensive team into the best college football has ever seen in 2018. The 2026 Tigers will be a better balanced team, offensively and defensively, one that will not give up 25-45 points to an opponent as the 2018 team did on occasion. The only offense on their horizon that could possibly do so is Texas but the game is in Baton Rouge and Texas will have played a home game against Ohio State that should give indication how strong the Longhorns will be in Louisiana November 14th. The Tigers will be coming off a home game against Alabama but the cache’ of Alabama superiority won’t be evident under Kiffen.

We do not shy away from finding homes for older cats, but we are aware of the challenges. We feel that placing an adult cat, especially an older one, in a loving home is one of the most rewarding things we do. And it’s only possible because there are wonderful people with kind hearts who want senior cats to have a second chance to be happy, and they know the joy of having a senior cat as a companion.
