LSU PORTAL POTENTIAL COULD MEAN DEEP PLAYOFF RUN
The remnants of a terrible two-year run under Brian Kelly have largely disappeared with the hiring of lightning rod coach Lane Kiffen and the haul Kiffen made in the transfer portal this winter.
A team so bereft of talent that running back and offensive linemen were considered endangered species in 2024 and last season has been made whole with primarily experienced transfers through the portal and the accumulation of some top-tier defensive linemen into the freshman class.
Beginning with quarterback, Kiffen secured Sam Leavett from Arizona State whose foot injuries have been overcome in the offseason but remains a tantalizing but still unproven SEC caliber player. Most of the reps at the position have been taken by Elon transfer redshirt sophomore Landon Clark and by Southern Cal redshirt freshman transfer Husan Longstreet. We’ll give the Tigers a B going into the season because of the experience at the position but no real star - yet.
Joining Leavett in the backfield will be two of the most important Tiger returnees in running backs Harlem Berry and Durham Caden, both proven producers but currently in backup roles behind Wisconsin transfer Dilin Jones, a redshirt sophomore. All three runners are underclassmen and this is the biggest increase in strength of any position in Baton Rouge. We’ll raise their grade to A- because of the same reasons given at quarterback but even more proven production against top tier college defenses.
Like a Sigma Chi rush class at LSU, the wideout class will need name tags and patience as they not only learn about LSU but themselves. The only returning wideout is Phillip Wright III, a redshirt freshman with limited experience in 2025 who finds himself 3rd on the WR-Z position behind senior transfer Jayce Brown. Brown, at 5’11” and 175, has to be really good at his size, which is considered the lesser of the two positions on the line of scrimmage. He’s built more like a slot but that position is being filled as a starter by Winston Watkins, a 5’10” 182 pound sophomore transfer from Ole Miss. The leading receiver - the bell cow of the wideouts - is WR-Z starter Jackson Harris. This 6’2, 202 pound transfer from Stanford and Hawaii is a redshirt junior and has the muscle and experience to be the latest in LSU’s recent run of receivers reaching the NFL. These three transfers are joined by five other portal receivers in the three deep plus one top ten on the depth chart - eight of ten with only Phillips and Corey Barber Junior, a freshman All State Alabama player penciled in at third team slot not from the portal. And there are three other transfers, all 6’2” or taller, that could push these ten for playing time. I’ll give the position a B+ for experience, size and depth - and eleven transfers!
The tight ends are led by potential All American Trey’Dez Green, LSU’s best pass catcher and horribly underutilized by Kelly. This 6’7” Zachary junior plays just under 240 pounds and his basketball skills should be more on display with an offensive mind at least a generation ahead of the aforementioned Kelly. He’s backed by two transfers, Zach Grace. a 6’2” 236 pound redshirt junior from Oregon and Malachi Thomas, a 6’3”, 242 pound player. With two freshmen tight ends, this position rates a B because of Green and Grace’s production at Oregon but a position that may not provide the blocking necessary to free up Kiffen’s offensive schemes. We’ll see.
The offensive line. Last year’s D- position. This year, led by former transfer and center Braelin Moore, the Tigers can also look with confidence at left tackle, where Colorado’s Jordan Seaton, a 6’5”, 307 pound two year starter, will protect Leavett’s blind side. Aliou Bah, a senior transfer from Maryland, will more than adequately man the right guard position. That leaves senior Bo Bordelon at the left guard position and redshirt sophomore Weston Davis, a much maligned player last year, at right tackle. A huge upgrade with Seaton and Bah and five other transfers among the three-deep positions. Assuming Bordelon’s experience has finally paid off and Davis, an experienced three year squad player, has improved his consistency, this position gets a finger-crossed B because of Moore, Seaton and Bah and the transfer depth that should relieve the stress of LSU’s most battle-scarred group position in 2025.
We won’t review the placekicking as we need more information closer to the beginning of the season.

As a whole, I’ll give LSU a B+ offensively because of Kiffen, skill position transfers and a revamped offensive line. There are no sure All Americans on this offensive team squad but look to Seaton and Green to be the leading candidates. I’ll

MORNING GLORY, A THRIVING SUMMER FLOWERING PLANT.
Walking through the garden during the month of August can be exhausting both physically and visually. The current lack of rain has been stressful for most of our garden plants, even the turfgrass that we grow as lawns.
Walking through the garden center the other day, I noticed a group of plants in full bloom that looked completely unaffected. The blue flowers of dwarf morning glory were abundant and the plants themselves looked healthy.
Digging a little deeper into dwarf morning glory I now understand why.
Dwarf morning glory, Evolvulus glomeratus, is a member of the Convolvulaceae plant family along with plants like sweet potato, morning glory vine, and cypress vine. It is native to South America, specifically to Guyana, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Brazil. The native climate is tropical with two distinct dry and wet seasons. Evolving in a climate with a significant dry season provides dwarf morning glory with the genetic tools necessary to survive drought-like conditions when grown outside of its native range.
Dwarf morning glory is perennial in its native range, but along the gulf coast it is grown as an annual. A lot of folks have success with it surviving milder winters and refer to it as a “tender perennial”. It’s a low growing bedding plant with a spreading-like growth habit. Most varieties average 10 to 12 inches tall, and 12 to 18 inches wide once established. It produces beautiful blue flowers from spring all the way to the first frost in the fall. The low and spreading habit allows it to be used as a bedding plant or border plant. It can also be used in mixed combination plantings and hanging baskets.
Some may have never heard of dwarf morning glory, but they may have heard about Blue Daze, a long-time popular cultivar emerging in the mid 1990’s. Blue My Mind and Blue My Mind XL are two newer varieties worthy of use in southern gardens. In fact, all three were promoted as LSU AgCenter Super Plants back in 2023. Gardeners know that super plants grow well in subtropical climate of Louisiana.
So, if you’re looking to add a superior drought tolerant plant to your garden or landscape, head out to the local garden center and see what varieties are available. Any would make a great addition and bring immediate appeal, even during these hot and dry conditions.

I got to looking at the things I painted for my cabinet doors and realized I didn’t have any strawberries. So I went digging around to see if I had a strawberry pattern. And of course I didn’t! But, I got one! This is a Tracy Moreau original design. And as usual, I changed some things in the design. But, that is okay, I don’t think she really expects us to paint it exactly as she did. All I have left to do with this piece is paint the back (I don’t like unfinished wood on the back of a piece I paint), thinking about distressing the Sunset Gold edges, and varnish it. When dry add a Command strip picture holder and I’ll be done. Looks like I will be doing more fruits and vegetable painting for the rest of the cabinet doors. This one was a lot of fun.

The National Football League prides itself on showcasing the best athletes in the world, yet it continues to allow many of its games to be played on artificial turf. While advances in synthetic surfaces have made them more durable and easier to maintain, they still fail to provide what matters most— player safety. If the NFL truly wants to protect its players and preserve the quality of the game, natural grass should become the mandatory playing surface in every stadium.
The most compelling argument for natural grass is the growing body of evidence suggesting it results in fewer lower-body injuries. Players have long voiced concerns about artificial turf, saying it places greater stress on knees, ankles, and feet. The surface often creates more traction than grass, preventing a player’s foot from naturally releasing during sudden cuts or awkward tackles. That increased grip can contribute to devastating injuries such as torn ACLs, Achilles tendon ruptures, and ankle sprains. While no surface can eliminate injuries entirely, natural grass allows for more natural movement and typically provides a softer landing during collisions.
The NFL Players Association has repeatedly advocated for the league to transition to natural grass. When the people risking their bodies every Sunday overwhelmingly express a preference for one playing surface over another, the league should listen. The players know firsthand how different surfaces feel and how their bodies respond after games. Their collective experience should carry significant weight in determining the safest environment possible.
Natural grass also enhances the quality of play. Football was born on grass fields, and many of the sport’s most iconic moments occurred on natural surfaces. Grass provides a more forgiving, consistent feel that allows athletes to perform at their highest level. Although weather can affect the condition of a grass field, grounds crews have become remarkably skilled at maintaining world-class surfaces throughout an entire season. Modern irrigation systems, drainage technology, and hybrid grass innovations have made maintaining elite natural fields more practical than ever.
Critics often point to the higher maintenance costs associated with grass, especially for stadiums that host concerts and other events. However, NFL franchises are billion-dollar organizations that generate enormous revenues from television contracts, sponsorships, and ticket sales. The additional expense of maintaining natural grass should be viewed as an investment in player health rather than an unnecessary cost. If a better surface prevents even a handful of season-ending injuries, the financial and competitive benefits could easily outweigh the maintenance expenses.
Another advantage of natural grass is its ability to reduce heat. Artificial turf can become significantly hotter than grass during warm weather, sometimes reaching temperatures that create uncomfortable and potentially dangerous playing conditions. Natural grass stays cooler because it retains moisture and reflects less heat. Lower field temperatures not only improve player comfort but may also reduce fatigue and heat-related health risks during early-season games.
Fans also benefit when the league prioritizes natural grass. Star players are the biggest attraction in professional football. Every time an elite quarterback, running back, or defensive standout misses weeks or months because of a non-contact injury, the product suffers. Television ratings, ticket sales, fantasy football leagues, and the overall excitement surrounding the NFL all depend on keeping the game’s biggest stars healthy and on the field.
The NFL has consistently embraced innovation in areas such as player safety, concussion protocols, helmet technology, and rule changes designed to protect athletes. Making natural grass the standard would be another meaningful step in that evolution. It would demonstrate that the league values player health as much as entertainment and profits.
Perhaps the strongest argument for mandating natural grass comes from the NFL’s own relationship with the FIFA World Cup. During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, several NFL stadiums that normally use artificial turf temporarily converted to natural grass because FIFA requires its premier tournament to be played on grass or grass-based hybrid surfaces. Stadiums such as SoFi Stadium, AT&T Stadium, NRG Stadium, and MetLife Stadium proved that installing and maintaining natural grass is both possible and practical when the world’s biggest soccer event comes to town.
If NFL owners are willing to invest millions of dollars to provide the safest and highest-quality playing surface for international soccer stars, it raises an obvious question: Why shouldn’t they make that same investment for their own players? The World Cup demonstrated that the obstacle has never been whether grass can work in modern NFL stadiums—it has been whether owners are willing to prioritize player safety over convenience and maintenance costs. With more than 90 percent of NFL players expressing a preference for natural grass, the World Cup removed one of the league’s biggest arguments against making the switch. If natural grass is considered the gold standard for the world’s premier sporting event, it should also be the standard for America’s most popular sport.
Football is an inherently physical sport, and injuries will never disappear. However, the NFL has a responsibility to minimize unnecessary risks whenever possible. By mandating natural grass in every
stadium, the league would create a safer environment, improve the quality of play, respond to the concerns of its players, and protect the stars who make the game so popular. For a league committed to excellence, the choice should be clear: football belongs on natural grass.

WELCOME TO VIETNAM LIGHT; T-RUMP’S WAR
Well….we’ve reached the point in our conflict with Iran where death tolls are starting to be addressed in the political doublespeak of the Vietnam era and from the book 1984.
A war that was never declared is starting to resemble Desert Storm and the ridiculous military intrusions of the past 35 years. Pete Hegseth, the Secretary of War, in his sober state, reminds me of John Erlichman and H.R. Haldeman of the Nixon years - two bad actors inspired by the oligarchical Spiro Agnew, Richard Nixon’s arrogant Vice-President.
Apparently the right amount of money has not been reached whereby this flawed administration will take action to properly bury the sharia-guided Muslim faction in Iran. Perhaps it is too big of a task to extract the remaining Persians from the fanatics and so our oil prices, consumer goods, investments and trust in 45/47 continues to erode as money leaves the public coffers but somehow continues to enter the bank accounts of the well-connected.
My biggest mistake was not investing in lip balm stock in 2016 when The Donald decided to take on an under qualified Hillary Clinton and won a controversial close election to assume the Presidency. However, Trump did not necessarily believe in the ethics and gravitas that the position demands. This former Democrat took the nation’s highest office and while attempting to drain the swamp has helped to rupture the septic system of America and with his coarse discourse continues to denigrate the moral stock of what made America great. You can’t make America great by vulgarity, ignorance and snake oil tactics that made the Trumps filthy rich in the 60’s, 70’s and ‘80s. And by contributing to the removal of the guardrails of civility, morality, decorum and plain decency, 45/47 continues to play into the hands of a growing cadre of radical crazies and lunatic-fringe social nut jobs.
Yes, the lunatic Left is much worse even in Trump’s egotistical worst moments so we are stuck with the T-Rump - a tyrannosaurus in appetite and acting like an donkey more and more each day as even his most zealous supporters begin to tire of The Traveling Show. The man is a marvel of contradictions; his obvious patriotism colored by needing to sell wristwatches and name buildings after him while his butt-kissing, rapidly depleting followers start to wonder if somehow we have another version of Joe Biden that we have to hold our breathe over until late 2028.
No - there are no legitimate answers from the Democrats on the horizon. We can’t put the toothpaste that is Donald Trump back into the tube that could produce a more sober, informative, truly sensitive President. But Trump can’t help himself and the con man inside him has to have the upper hand much more than the man who can show understanding, self-deprication and even love in his better moments.
For what it’s worth, we’re saddled with this conundrum until either J.D. Vance or Marco Rubio sets the benchmark for the post-Trump years, hopefully before the upcoming possible disaster of the midterms this fall. Yes, it’s being overplayed and overhyped but every year the changing of the guard continues to erode the topsoil of American greatness until one day our children and grandchildren will be paying the price. Balls and backbone, intelligence and integrity, civics and civility. It’s not too late if Americans will put down their mobile devices and return more to their own devices.

USING NATIVE PLANTS TO SUPPORT WILDLIFE
We get a lot of questions about growing native plants in the landscape. Native plants are those that have evolved in a par-ticular area over many centuries. The idea of planting native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers seems to be getting more popular. While there are many advantages to growing native plants, their relatively low maintenance is the most common theme during these discussions. Once established, many native species require less supplemental irrigation, fertilizer, and pest control than non-native ornamentals because they are adapted to local growing conditions.
But there’s another advantage, and that’s the benefit to wildlife. One of the easiest and most rewarding ways to support local wildlife is by planting native plants. Because they developed alongside native insects, birds, and other animals, they provide the food, shelter, and nesting sites that wildlife needs to survive.
Native flowering plants provide nectar and pollen that sustain bee, butterfly, moth, fly, beetle, and hummingbird species throughout the growing season. Many serve as hosts plants for butterfly and moth caterpillars. While adult butterflies feed on nectar from many flowers, their caterpillars often depend on specific native plants to complete their life cy-cle. An example is the monarch butterfly caterpillar and its need for native milkweed.
Native trees and shrubs produce berries, seeds, and nuts that provide valuable nu-trition for birds throughout the year. Native plants attract insects which are a critical food source for many songbirds, especially during nesting season. A landscape rich in native plants supports a healthy insect population, which in turn supports healthy bird popula-tions.
Dense native shrubs provide nesting sites and protection from predators, while na-tive grasses provide cover for small mammals, reptiles, and ground-nesting birds. Fallen leaves and plant stems create habitat for beneficial insects and other organisms that con-tribute to healthy soils and natural nutrient cycling. Homeowners do not need to replace their entire land-scape. By adding even a few native species they can provide val-uable wildlife benefits. Plants such as oak trees, black-eyed Su-san, purple coneflower, blazing star, beautyberry, coral honey-suckle, and native asters offer food and shelter for a wide variety of wildlife while adding seasonal beauty to the landscape.
Creating a wildlife-friendly landscape is more than just planting flowers. By choosing native plants, gardeners help cre-ate biodiversity, support pollinator populations, and create healthier ecosystems. Every native plant added to the landscape benefits the long-term health of local wildlife while minimizing seasonal maintenance.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs.
