Stupid? You bet! Realistic?? You bet! Since the University of Kentucky moved to privatize is athletic department to break free of the revenuegenerating structures of public institutions, schools like LSU have held closed door meetings among their richest backers to determine LSU’s road for alternative revenue-generating opportunities that could change the future of American college sports. Now the landscape is considering private equity deals, where investment groups funnel millions to a school for the opportunity to secure an entitlement to a share of future revenues from a source. In other words, we pay you now, you pay us later….and no one really knows how much control these groups would demand over running the sports programs or monetizing the licensing, branding, accessibility and ticketing of the sports in mind. According to John Holden, a sports law expert and professor at the Indiana University Kelly School of Business (not Brian!), “producing private revenue streams to permanently fund an annual sports payroll that starts above ten million dollars and will quickly accelerate to over 30 million in the near future is an arrangement that raises questions about whether the (equity) firm then gets a say in managing the athletic program itself”. No one in the SEC except Kentucky has done more than LSU to address this situation but given the fact that LSU had the highest transfer portal rankings this season, far above runners-up Ole Miss and Texas and Lane Kiffen dropped north of $40 million to secure this 41-member class, it’s reasonable that LSU will step up and at least match Kentucky’s first efforts. But given the fuel between LSU and Ole Miss and the dollars emanating from Austin and Texas, this battle will change the landscape of SEC football to possibly drop Alabama out of the top five or six teams while LSU, with multi-billionaire Todd Graves potentially leading the way, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas A&M and Georgia have a go at it. Florida and Tennessee also have the big bucks corporately and with the state of Alabama having two major teams, things could get ugly in the Yellowhammer State. Enjoy relatively inexpensive college football while you can. Maybe you’ll be able to tell your grandkids you could go to a game in Tiger Stadium for under $200. They won’t believe you.

Whether you are near the coast or a couple hundred miles to the north, cassia plants will produce a massive showing of golden yellow blooms that will attract a lot of attention from late September through November. The yellow flowers are produced in axillary clusters and racemes and open very prominently, causing a vibrant display during a time of year where a lot of other plants are slowing down.

There are several cassia plants available in the trade, and it might be confusing to beginning gardeners because of all the choices. The most common cassia plant on the market by far is Senna splendida, which some folks call the golden wonder tree. It is native to South America and behaves as a semi-evergreen in our climate. It can get 10 ft X 6 ft in warmer areas and a little smaller at 4-6 ft X 5 ft in the cooler areas of the region. Other cassias you may encounter include candlestick trees or candelabra plants, Senna alata, and the shower tree, Senna corymbosa. Shower trees are typically grown as medium to large shrubs because they grow slightly taller than the golden wonder tree. Both golden wonder tree and shower tree develop more woody growth, while the candelabra plant is more herbaceous. The height of candelabra plant varies depending on location. In southern areas it can reach 10-12 ft and 5-6 ft in northern areas. Even with all the different species out there, they all produce beautiful yellow flowers. If I had to pick a favorite, I would go with S. splendida, the golden wonder plant. I find the blooms to be more showy, last longer, and they don’t produce as many seed pods. However, all are quite magnificent. Maintenance on cassia plants is relatively easy. All species require a little bit of pruning to keep plants within a manageable growth pattern. Remove dead wood in late winter and shape plants as needed through spring. Stop pruning in early summer so the plants can set flower buds. Fertilize regularly during the growing season and provide supplemental irrigation to new plantings. Plant cassias in full sun into soil with good drainage. Keep their mature size in mind, so provide enough room. I find them most attractive planted along the back of the yard or in the back of large flower beds. That way they grow from behind and surprise you with blooms in the fall. Cassias can also be planted in containers for those with limited planting space. With so many choices it can be a little overwhelming to decide. Do an image search online to get an idea of what these plants can do. You will also start seeing them stocked at garden centers over the next few weeks. Get out and see what options are available to you.

I decided to share with you a table arrangement I made. Sometimes I just feel the need to have fresh flowers in the house. So I purchased a preselected bouquet at the grocery store and came home and played. I still have a couple flat dish containers from the flower shop. So I dug one out, found a block of floral foam, added some water to the sink to soak the foam, and when ready I began designing. It was so much fun! I really miss my flower shop.
LSU and the college baseball world lost one of its towering figures Friday, August 14, when legendary former baseball coach and athletic director J. Stanley “Skip” Bertman died in Baton Rouge at the age of 88. For generations of LSU fans, Bertman wasn’t simply the baseball coach. He was the man who taught Louisiana to fall in love with college baseball. When Bertman took over LSU’s program in 1984, baseball in Baton Rouge looked nothing like it does today. Crowds were small, facilities were modest and LSU was hardly considered among the nation’s elite programs.

Yet Bertman’s greatest monument may be visible every spring. It’s there when more than 10,000 LSU fans pack the Box. It’s there when Omaha becomes filled with purple and gold. It’s there every time an LSU baseball team begins a season believing anything short of competing for a national championship isn’t enough. Skip Bertman didn’t inherit those expectations. He created them. LSU baseball existed before Skip Bertman. But the powerhouse, the tradition and the culture that Tiger fans recognize today were built upon the foundation he established. The championships will always be remembered. Perhaps the greatest part of Skip Bertman’s legacy wasn’t recorded on a scoreboard or displayed inside a trophy case. Bertman was more than a baseball coach—he was a teacher, mentor and leader who helped shape generations of young men. His lessons extended far beyond hitting, pitching and winning championships. He preached preparation, accountability, confidence and doing the little things correctly every single day. Former players often carried those lessons into their careers, families and communities long after leaving LSU. LSU DEFENSE POISED TO IMPROVE AGAIN IN 2026
The LSU Tigers were ranked 27th overall defensively last season, lacking linebacker and defensive tackle depth and quality while its secondary was among the best in the country with two transfer starters and two underclassmen doing the same. It was a bend but not break D, led by All Conference linebacker Whit Weeks and defensive backs Mansoor Delane and A.J. Haulcy, P.J. Woodland and D.J. Pickett. Although LSU’s defense was ranked fifth in the league and 27th in the country, their scoring rank was 23rd thanks to their top ten red zone position and ninth in interceptions. This side of the ball, then, was not the more vital roster to be filled as was a pathetic offensive depth chart from last year. Having said that, the Tigers secured five transfers and three top ten high school defensive players who will play key roles in 2026. Begin on the defensive line, where both defensive ends and one defensive tackle will be transfers. Led by the most crucial newcomer, Princewell Umanmielen from Ole Miss, a 6’4 244 pound senior reminiscent of LSU’s sterling freshman, Harold Perkins from a few years back, this all SEC Conference disrupter will be the lead dog along with Weeks and Woodland on the defense. He’s joined by Jordan Ross, a 6’5” 246 pound junior defensive left end from Tennessee and Malik Blocton, a 6’3”, 286 pound junior transfer from Auburn as starters, Blocton at left defensive tackle. Joining these proven conference vets will be Deuce Geralds, a 6’1, 279 freshman at right defensive tackle, one of three heralded prep All American defensive linemen to sign with LSU’s nationally best defensive line recruiting class. It is an undersized defensive front but one designed to disrupt passing offenses and outside sweep rushing teams but will definitely see substitutions in red zone defenses at the tackle positions with a couple of 296 pound juniors, Dominick McKinley and transfer Stephiylan Green from Clemson. Expect to see LSU’s prize freshman, Baton Rouge’s Lamar Brown, getting early playing time as the nation’s top-ranked prep defensive player at 6’4” and 295 pounds steps in behind Ross at defensive end. Also watch for Richard Anderson, the third of the All American prepsters, to step in behind Green as the 3rd team right defensive tackle. He could be the starter, however, by the middle of the season, along with Geralds, with one of them switching tackle positions. If it wasn’t enough adding the insult of signing Lane Kiffen as their football coach and the injury of capturing their best defensive player in Umanmielen, LSU stepped on Ole Miss again with the signing of their 2025 starting linebacker T. J. Dottery. The 5th year senior plays at 6’2”, 225 and is a perfect match to Weeks, LSU’s starting weak side linebacker and team captain, at 6’3” and 223. Dottery will man the middle linebacker position while Dashawn Spears, a 6’3” 209-pound junior, moves from safety to Star, a hybrid position meant to take away middle passing lanes against slot receivers who are used in spread, pass-oriented offenses. It values quickness over size and fits into LSU’s defensive posture of stopping speed and quickness, areas where LSU’s defensive ends and outside linebackers have had beaucoup troubles for many years on jet sweeps, quarterback RPO’s and overloaded passing formations. It’s more like an Alabama defense sans the monster defensive tackles but even Saban’s powerhouses had troubles with spread formations using such players in the past five or six years. A key substitution at linebacker will be Davhon Keys, who stepped in admirably last season with LSU’s injury situation. A 6 foot, 227 pound junior, Keys will spell Weeks at weak side linebacker. Charles Ross, a junior transfer, will back Keys. The other linebacker and Star positions are not as well manned but will be filled by three of last year’s backups.

Backing Cooley will he squad member Jhase Thomas, a redshirt freshman and true freshman Alden Hall. Specialists include all conference Grant Chadwick at punter and a placekicker contest between transfer Scott Starcyk, incumbent Aiden Corbello and freshmen Gavin Higgins and Sean Perret. The long snapper should be transfer redshirt freshman Mack Mulhern who will be challenged by sophomore Silas Hall from Baton Rouge. Apparently the Georgia long snapper connection so long in place at LSU has run its course and with the league’s best punter and most competitive place kicking scramble, the Tigers wanted a choice to see who best could deliver the ball in critical situations. As far as rankings, I would put the defensive line at B+ because of the Princewell transfer and the huge freshman haul by LSU, a tad higher for pass defense than rushing because of the defensive end position. Linebacker rates a B- because of lack of depth and Weeks’ injury history while the secondary earns an A- It’s one of the best in the country. Punting ranks A- and placekicking C+. No word yet on punt returners or kickoff personnel or a key special teams player. So no rankings there, -0-
