Tony’s Take AMERICA’S BIRTHDAY - 50 YEARS LATER America’s 250th birthday last week was a shadow of what we experienced in 1976. Like an advancing decrepit, this nation’s celebration of what created its unique position in the world has been partially whitewashed, to the point that the average high school graduate today would be hard pressed to tell you much about our founders, leaders and achievements during it first 250 years.

My wife and I left our two-year old son with his grandparents in Chalmette 50 years ago as we set out on a two-week Bicentennial vacation. I was preparing to return to my radio career after a two year absence later that summer and money was tight and credit even tighter but we knew this would be an opportunity never to pass our way again.

What a trip! We stopped in small Southern towns after leaving Shreveport, took the Blue Ridge Parkway through some of the most beautiful scenery in America, shopped local farmer’s markets and visited Gettysburg, where, in the heat and humidity of a late June afternoon, I attempted Pickett’s Charge against the Bluecoats and nearly collapsed from the effort even my early 30’s. It brought a healthy respect and admiration of the men who had traveled hundreds of miles with little sleep, food or water, to meet their former brothers in a four-day epic battle that shaped the future of the United States.

Then it was on to Philadelphia, long before Rocky and the famous statue downtown took their place in American lore. We saw the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall and a view of South Philly that made me happy I didn’t live in the Northeast urban corridor of the United States.

From there, we were thrilled with The Tall Ships that happened to fill Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island the Saturday we crossed the bridge over that famous body of water. We paused briefly to view the ships, then continued our journey to Plymouth Rock, the site of the landing of the Pilgrims in 1620.

There, I kissed the Rock in honoring a long-standing tradition.

We finished our journey just after the 4th, in Boston. I don’t remember much about that city except we took in a ball game at Fenway and watched a talented Red Sox team defeat Detroit and Denny McLain, the last major league pitcher to win more than 30 games in a season.

Then we began our return trip, driving on to New York, where we passed its famous skyline at night. We had driven to Washington, D.C. on our way to Boston - our first time there - and took in a Bicentennial fireworks celebration on The Mall and snacked on Popeye’s Chicken. We had driven through Baltimore on our way to D.C. and Boston and thought it an Eastern version of a smoggy Los Angeles, the city where I graduated high school and worked for The New York Times during the time of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Celebration 250 was anticlimantic for me. Too many balls in the air to feel the same gut instincts that our nation will survive in its present form with a population more and more self-absorbed and narcissistic - and dumber than rocks. There is always hope but not even the creeping Democratic Socialist Communist threat can be blamed for the current state of the American mindset. It’s laziness, victimization and virtual total ignorance of what made this country great. It’s the deteriorating backbone and lack of ethics, empathy and a lack of face-to-face communications. It’s the rise of intolerance to promote discourse in the face of a world more and more woke from humanity than from public shame and guilt. It’s enough to make you cry but there are still more than enough Americans left to make this dream continue if common sense and selflessness return in enough abundance to just a smidgen of the remaining population. We’re still smart and welcoming and need to find those leaders who will help us restore the dream for the next 50 years. I won’t be here for that one but my grandchildren and great-grandchildren should be and this is the one gift I treasure more than any other.

One of the fun things about gardening in the deep south is that we have a long growing season which allows us to maintain production much longer than our northern counterparts. However, it can be a little tricky during the middle of summer when daily temps are high and rain becomes infrequent because it still causes plant stress. Insect pests are typically more abundant and will seize the opportunity to feed on your crops. To ensure a productive summer season in the vegetable garden pay attention to what you plant and how you care for them.

Not everything planted in the spring will make it through the summer. Take tomatoes for instance. Spring tomato varieties have issues when nighttime temperatures exceed 75°F. It affects their flowering process and disrupts pollination and fertilization. By June the spring planted tomatoes start to look rough anyway. Go ahead and get rid of them now. Replant with heat tolerant tomato varieties in July so that you can continue tomato production into fall. Look for specific heat tolerant varieties like Sunmaster, Heat Wave II, Sun Master, Talladega, Solar Set, Florida 91, Solar Fire, and Sun Leaper.

Spring planted summer squashes like yellow squash and zucchini probably look exhausted by this point with many being decimated by squash vine borers. You can replant those same varieties in July to harvest in the fall. Consider using row covers or fine textured screen cloth over the plants up until flowering to prevent squash vine bores from laying eggs on new plants.

Okra is one of the most vigorous growing crops that thrive in summer heat. Some folks who planted earlier are starting to harvest now, but you can still add plants to the garden now to get a crop 40 to 50 days later. Okra does well in the deep south and there are many varieties to choose from. If you are looking for a list, try one of the All American Selections (AAS) varieties like Candle Fire (F1 hybrid), Burgundy, Blondy, Louisiana Green Velvet, and the old standby, Clemson Spineless.

Lastly, drought-like conditions can be stressful on all plants even those that thrive under intense heat.

Be prepared to water your summer vegetable garden if rain isn’t consistent. Water long enough to thoroughly soak the soil and wait until the soil is dry before watering again. This can be a laborious task, but it will ensure that plants have an uninterrupted water supply to keep producing. Add a layer of mulch, like fallen leaves or a bagged mulch product, over the soil to help retain as much soil water as possible so your watering efforts don’t go unnoticed!

Hi, Everyone!

Hope you all had an enjoyable 4th of July. I stayed out of the heat and rain. I worked most of the day which made the day go by very quickly. My grandson loves putting on a fireworks show (he inherited that from his Grandpa), so we all gathered at his Mom’s house for the wonderful display he planned. It seemed as though the whole block joined us to watch his display and set off what they had. It was a truly festive evening!

I didn’t get a lot of painting done this time, as I am waiting on supplies that need to arrive. Unfortunately Hobby Lobby no longer sells Deco Art Americana or Delta products. So now I have to order them from Pinecraft or one of the other suppliers. And we all know depending on FedEx, UPS, and USPS leaves a lot to be desired. So I wait and hope for the best. But in the meantime, there are always flowers! And says Summer better than a bright yellow Sun Flower! I designed this in a 5 x 5 square container.

I added some white astromeries, yellow spray roses, saladigo, there is a pink rose on the backside of this, and some purple status for contrast. I think this one came out pretty cute. Let me know what you think. Keeping my fingers crossed that my supplies come in soon.

Tony’s Take THE KILT TILTED The termination of former Sheriff Randy Smith is still settling in as the long time career of the son of a st. Tammany politician and veteran of more than 35 years in law enforcement ended last month.

Smith was a galvanizing figure, bigger than life like the late Harry Lee (but not THAT big) and one whose smile and friendly smirk was evident most of his career. But as most in politics find out, there are those who will more than oppose them. One of them is Bobby Couvillion, who is the “innocent” victim here of a pissed-off sheriff who had finally found his trigger last month at a Northshore restaurant and attacked Couvillion without any warning.

Smith should have known better. He should have confronted Couvillion’s viral posts years ago when differences could have been worked out. His fate was justified as it exposed a weakness in Smith’s long established career.

The former sheriff will have the opportunity to avoid a felony record if he completes a substance abuse program that could last through the end of 2027. I’m sure Smith will do so. The scene at the restaurant involving alcohol looked like a kegger aftermath with consumption more than exceeding what a responsible adult or adults should partake of in public.

After Smith was elected sheriff, succeeding the deeply flawed Jack “Boo Boo” Strain, I kidded a few deputies I knew on the west side of the parish. “You know,” I told them, “you guys will have to wear kilts when you’re in public during any ceremonial event.” I believed they believed me. Smith was always in the tartan during those events, proudly displaying his Scotch (or is it Irish?) heritage. Doesn’t matter. I’ve got both Scotch and Irish in me but Smith had Scotch, Irish and Bourbon, along with other well-known alcohol names, and it finally cost him.

Now get to know Bret Ibert, the bald-pated operations chief who will serve as the interim sheriff while candidates scramble to file papers to run for the office vacated by Smith’s resignation June 24th. But be careful, office seekers: the last three sheriffs in St. Tammany had their issues and were long-serving law enforcement officers. Don’t give voters another reason to vote down necessary tax funding for a department that has done an admirable job of keeping St. Tammany virtually trouble-free for decades. Our safety is more important than your personal desires.

TUNG TREE

The tung tree, Vernicia fordii, is native to southern China, Burma, and Vietnam. In their native environment these trees can grow as tall as 60 feet.

In South Mississippi, these trees are often seen along roadsides and in home landscapes and tend to grow no taller than 40 feet. Tung trees have simple leaves that may be either heart-shaped or have three maplelike lobes. They can be easily identified by a pair of red glands where the leaf meets the petiole.

Flowers of the tung tree are just over an inch across and pale pink with streaks of darker red at the base of the petals. The flowers bloom in early spring and due to the attractiveness of the flower and the early bloom they were frequently planted as ornamentals. Tung trees produce a large woody, pear-shaped berry which is initially green but turns dull brown as it ripens.

Though the tree is very attractive, all parts of the plant are toxic and should not be eaten. Leaves of the tree can also cause irritation resulting in a rash similar to poison ivy. The nuts of the tung tree are able to last a significant time on the ground making them very successful at spreading.

Tung trees were introduced into Mississippi in the early 20th Century with the intention of establishing their production as a sustainable industry. Oil from tung trees has been used to waterproof wood, in paints and varnishes, making adhesives, as well as in insulators for electric wires. Tung oil is also used as a drying agent for inks and after processing, as a motor fuel. Tung oil trees were once referred to as the most profitable cash crop grown in its climactic area and a godsend for Gulf Coast farmers seeking a replacement crop for large areas of cut-over pine.

Commercial production of tung oil trees in the United States began in the early 1900’s with the center of production being the panhandle of Florida and between Poplarville and Picayune, Mississippi.

Production of tung oil trees remained important for Coastal Mississippi through the late 1960s.

Hurricane Camille in August of 1969 resulted in the destruction of as much as 40,000 acres of tung trees. This, combined with increased labor costs and competition from importers, led to the end of large scale tung tree production. Tung trees were grown in Stone County in the mid-1990s but the largest orchard, located near Lumberton, MS was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. At the time that orchard produced 20 percent of the domestic supply of tung oil.

Three kittens, 7-8 months old, found on a country road along with two adult cats. No one knew where they came from. One adult had an injured leg. All 5 were taken in by a family who could not bear to see them out there frightened and hungry. How did this little group of cats suddenly appear on their road?

No one around there had ever seen them before. More than likely they were abandoned there by someone who did not want them and really did not care what happened to them. How sad for the cats! And how hard on the people who do care about animals. Suddenly this family with cats and dogs of their own had to find room in their home for 5 new pets. They paid to take the two adults to their veterinarian for care but they have asked START to help with the three younger ones. We will spay/neuter, test and vaccinate them. And find homes for them, too. START depends on funds donated by the public to help us care for stray and abandoned pets. Please visit our website and donate to help us help these animals.
