The problem with writing a story about an event past the publishing date of this paper is sometimes the hardest to write. Last weekend, I wrote about a plucky Oklahoma baseball team that appeared destined to finish their season ‘way above their raisin’, jumping from 11th in the SEC to winning it all over a solid North Carolina team. I had them winning the series in the first two games, appearing to suck the life out of a more talented and battle-tested group of veterans from North Carolina. It still might have happened in Monday’s showdown but not while I’m writing this.

Oklahoma lost six of nine series in the SEC and went to Omaha with a losing SEC record, barely squeaking by the worst LSU team to take the field since before Skip Bertman, personal computers, 9/11, cellphones and social media. They had no all conference players on the first two teams. But they got hot and a team not known for hitting for power was on the verge of catching the Gorilla Ball LSU team records for round-trippers hit during their salad days.

Instead, on Sunday, the Tarheels switched Saturday’s script with the Sooners and after being behind 2-0 early, just like Saturday against Oklahoma, North Carolina took the lead by one and then, like Oklahoma, added home runs to the final score of 6-2, neutralizing their 8-3 loss on Saturday.

Now the Tar Heels have the advantage of seeing a dispirited Oklahoma team struggle against their phenomenal freshman pitcher, Cader Glauber, This New Jersey kid is undersized but hasn’t lost in 29 appearance this year, sporting a 10-0 record and running up 99 strikeouts. Paired with fellow All American hurler Jason Decaro, he with the 11-2 record, 84 strikeouts and an earned run average of 2.28, it appears the experience and patina of a team with two other All Americans in center fielder Owen Hull and shortstop Jake Schaeffner will prevail on Monday night. They add a wonderful contrast of texture in the landscape when used near plants with large, coarse leaves. The leaves move easily with the breeze, creating motion in the landscape. The sheer diversity in color, size, and shape provides the industry with many exciting selections. One of the best attributes regarding the use of ornamental grasses in the home landscape is their care and maintenance requirements.

They also develop extensive root systems that can support the plant during times of extreme environmental stress. All of these added together make for quite an impressive plant!

One of these ornamental grass plants that can be seen all over the region is pink muhly grass, Muhlenbergia capillaris. Sometimes referred to as gulf muhly, pink muhly grass is native to North America with a region of origin from the United States of America down to Guatemala and the Caribbean. Within the U.S., it occurs in prairies, pine barrens, and open woodlands from Massachusetts to Kansas and then down to Texas and Florida. The genus is named after Gotthilf Muhlenberg, an American botanist from Pennsylvania. The species name, capillaris, is of Latin origin and is defined as “of or resembling hair”, which is vindicated after seeing the plant for the first time.

Being a member of Poaceae, the main grass plant family in plant taxonomy, pink muhly grass shares many of the same characteristics of other grasses. It is considered a warm-season grass, like our common lawn grasses, due to its growth output during the summer months. Being perennial, it lives year after year going through dormant periods during the winter months. The real gossip begins with its attractive foliage and smoke-like flowers during late summer and fall months. The leaves are dark green in color, glossy, wiry, and thread-like. The panicles, loose multi-branched flowers, are pink in color and develop in late summer through the fall. They make for great individual specimens, but they really shine when used in a mass planting off in the distance. The plants themselves can get up to 4 ft tall with a width of about 3-4 ft.

The are a few cultural recommendations to follow to have a successful planting of pink muhly grass in the landscape. Like other grasses, pink muhly grass is going to require a decent amount of light for the plant to thrive. Choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight throughout the day. The area should have decent drainage. Pink muhly grass can tolerate a moist soil. However, if water collects regularly after rain events, I might reconsider. Lastly, take soil samples to determine soil fertility and adjust in situations where plant nutrients are showing “very low” and “low” levels.

Comply with these conditions and pink muhly grass will thrive in your landscape.

Whether in the ground or in a mixed container with other plants, pink muhly grass is an excellent choice for Louisiana gardeners. It’s such a good choice that the LSU AgCenter has selected pink muhly grass to be a finalist in the Louisiana Super Plant Program.

Hi, Everyone!

Wow! Father’s Day snook up on me faster than the winning car at the Indie 500! I barely had time to get my Dad’s flowers done and brought down to the cemetery in Buras. Guess you could say I have been burning the candle at both ends. So much to do and so little time to get it all done. But it will all fall in place in its own time.

As I was thinking what to write for this issue, I realized with Fathers day so close it would be appropriate to divert from a regular sports article and focus on a man who impacted so many people! Coach Amos Cormier will forever be remembered as one of Plaquemines Parish’s most beloved leaders, educators, and coaches.

Throughout his life, he devoted himself to serving others, whether on the football field, the baseball diamond, in the classroom, or in public office. His legacy is one of excellence, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the people and communities he loved.

On another note, I was able to get the 4th of July piece 95% completed. The only thing left to do is shade around the stars so they stand out more. Darken the shade around the entire board and the watermelon. Spatter the entire piece to give it more interest, maybe a little more highlighting, and three to coats of varnish. I plan on painting a couple more but I think I will change the wording to celebrate our 250th Birthday (at my grandson’s request). He wants to put it in the kitchen at the Fire Station. Can’t say no to that request. This was such a fun piece to paint. I am sure the next ones will be more fun!

Born and raised in Port Sulphur, Louisiana, Amos Cormier dedicated more than four decades to education and athletics. After graduating from Port Sulphur High School, he earned his degree from Southeastern Louisiana University and later completed advanced studies in educational administration and guidance and counseling at Loyola University in New Orleans. His passion for young people and his love of sports made coaching a natural calling.

Coach Cormier made his mark at Port Sulphur High School, Delta Heritage Academy, and Buras High School. While he enjoyed tremendous success in baseball, he was equally accomplished on the football field. As head football coach at Buras High School, he led the Wildcats to the 1990 Louisiana AA State Championship, a crowning achievement that remains one of the proudest moments in the history of the parish. As Parish President, Coach Cormier brought the same passion and leadership that had defined his coaching career. He focused on infrastructure improvements, recreation, economic development, coastal restoration, and flood protection. Above all, he believed in serving the people of Plaquemines Parish with honesty, compassion, and dedication. Friends and colleagues often described him as a man of faith who cared deeply about his community and always sought to do what was right.

Sadly, in June of 2016, Plaquemines Parish lost its leader when Amos Cormier passed away unexpectedly following complications from heart surgery. His death brought an outpouring of grief from former players, friends, fellow public servants, and residents across Louisiana. While his time as Parish President was brief, his impact on the parish had already been felt, and his legacy of service remains strong.

TOMATO FRUIT SPRAY What do you spray to control insect and disease pests on your tomatoes? Although there is no one tank mix that works for every situation, and it is important to rotate to active ingredients with different modes of action to prevent resistance.

Zeta-cypermethrin (GardenTech Sevin Insect Killer concentrate) controls fruitworms, hornworms, stink bugs and leaf-footed bugs and products containing chlorothalonil and copper octanoate are for disease control. There’s really no reason to not include a fungicide in your tomato spray for insects.

These active ingredients are all in products that can be purchased from local lawn and garden centers in small, home garden-sized containers. All three products are tank-mixed ac-cording to label directions and applied as a single spray, taking care to get thor-ough spray coverage of the entire plant, especially the undersides of leaves. Begin spraying a week or two after setting transplants and continue spraying at 7 to 10-day intervals for the remainder of the season. Rates may vary depending on the product so carefully read and follow label directions for all products used as these PHI are for tomatoes and may vary for other fruits or vegetables. Do not overuse these active in-gredients; alternate with other recommended treatments to prevent resistance.

Mancozeb is a good alternative for chlorothalonil, but, because it has a 5-day preharvest interval, it is best used in early season. If caterpillar pests are your only insect concern, spinosad is an effective alter-native for zeta-cypermethrin, but spinosad does not control stink bugs and is best used in early season when stink bugs numbers are low. Permethrin is a good substitute for zeta-cypermethrin but beware of using tank-mixes containing chlorothalonil and an emulsifiable concentrate, such as many formulations of permethrin, on peppers. This can result in severe phytotoxicity. Also, permethrin and zeta-cypermethrin are both pyrethroids, so rotating between these two products, or other pyrethroids, such as bifenthrin or cyfluthrin, does not help manage resistance.

What about organic options? There are several organic fungicide products, and organic insecticides that contain spinosad will do a great job controlling fruitworms and hornworms. But other than hand-picking and foot-stomping, there are no good organic options for stink bugs and leaffooted bugs. Be timely with your sprays. Both conventional and organic fungi-cides work best when applied before disease development, and insecticides work best against young, recently hatched caterpillars.

Three kittens, 7-8 months old, found on a country road along with two adult cats. No one knew where they came from. One adult had an injured leg. All 5 were taken in by a family who could not bear to see them out there frightened and hungry. How did this little group of cats suddenly appear on their road?

No one around there had ever seen them before. More than likely they were abandoned there by someone who did not want them and really did not care what happened to them. How sad for the cats! And how hard on the people who do care about animals. Suddenly this family with cats and dogs of their own had to find room in their home for 5 new pets. They paid to take the two adults to their veterinarian for care but they have asked START to help with the three younger ones. We will spay/neuter, test and vaccinate them. And find homes for them, too. START depends on funds donated by the public to help us care for stray and abandoned pets. Please visit our website and donate to help us help these animals.
